Welcome to the
"Topic of the Week,"
mediated this week by Arideni. Our topic this week is gold.
Money, money, money!
One hot controversy surrounding not just World of Warcraft, but all massively multiplayer online (MMO) games, is the trade of virtual property or real money trading (RMT). No doubt everyone who has played the game for more than a week has witnessed, or at least heard of, the gold-selling "companies" who tend to clog up chat in main cities, or even worse: spam massive amounts of whispers to players. Not only is the sale or purchase of items or gold against the policies set forth by Blizzard, they are also a security risk to one's account. Here at Wowhead, we have a
zero
tolerance policy towards RMT or gold-selling & spam.
So, for the majority of players who are legit, where can we get that cool thousand gold pieces to craft that epic item? How about a couple hundred to get it enchanted? Oh, let's not forget all those pretty gems!
A primary source of income for many derives from the "daily" quest system which was implemented about a year ago. A
daily quest
is one which can only be completed once per day. They were introduced as a new & interesting way for casual or non-raiding players to earn both gold & reputation with exotic factions, in the hopes of, among many other things, a special flying mount. Perhaps the biggest addition -- and certainly the most exciting -- has been the most recent patch,
Fury of the Sunwell
. Bringing together the last chapter -- at least for now -- of the Blood Elf & Draenei crusade, the Sunwell content patch increased daily quests to a maximum of 25 per day & introduced a progressive system akin to the ancient Qiraji in Silithus.
Alas, this is only one aspect of making money. Of course, the easy part is spending all that hard-earned coin. Here's a few thoughts to get started:
Do you spend impulsively? Do you track how much you spend?
Are you frequently "broke"? (read: barely able to repair gear)
Have you ever borrowed gold from someone? Did you pay interest?
Have you ever loaned someone gold? Did they pay you back promptly, if at all?
What are the top 5 things you spend gold on?
Is 1 gold worth haggling? How about 10 gold?
Let's discuss our spending habits & common traps, pitfalls, or general advice to players who have a hard time earning gold. Remember, keep it clean & I'll be dropping in later this week with some good financial ideals of my own.

I'm mainly doing PvE 25-man raids.
Gold comes from quests and dailies and selling the loots (enchant mats, primals and cloth). Getting the first epic flyer took some time (was before dailies), the next one was easy and now with the 2.4 dailies i'm back up at 6-7k having bought 2 "of the Shatterred Sun" titles.
* Do you spend impulsively? Do you track how much you spend?
No, i pay attention to what i get, wether it'll be usefull or not, wether i'd replace it soon or not, ... As such i don't buy much nor often. However i don't track how much i spend and don't skimp on enchants/gem either, even for offspec gear (i'm playing a druid), in order to be efficient and able to fill a gap through respeccing.
* Are you frequently "broke"? (read: barely able to repair gear)
Never. I'm a dps so through quests and such it's easy to get some gold. I waited to have 200 gold over the price to buy the epic flying skill and from then money was just very easy to get (the dailies had just been introduced at that point)
* Have you ever borrowed gold from someone? Did you pay interest?
No.
* Have you ever loaned someone gold? Did they pay you back promptly, if at all?
Yes, but to friends only, for little amounts with no interest rate (gold or enchant mats mainly). Most did pay back, most times i'd be the one to forget about it.
* What are the top 5 things you spend gold on?
Respeccing heal/dps , repairs, primals for enchants or whatever.
Being enchanter, alchemist and with gathering alts, i mostly sustain myself on the consumables front. Lots of imbued vials though.
* Is 1 gold worth haggling? How about 10 gold?
I try to buy cheapest, but depending on the time i have/need to acquire something, i can shell out. Or refuse to pay and wait if it's really too expensive (relative to the normal price, not to my finances, because i don't want to support unnecessary price inflation).

Do you spend impulsively? Do you track how much you spend?
No, I don´t. IMO people usually get broke buying "cool-junk" stuff like BoE stuff that can be replaced for something similar, pets, clothes, etc... just because they´re nice.
I don´t keep track of how much I spend but I keep track of how much I make. So before I buy anything I check how much I made in the day/week and I question myself: "Ok, I farmed the whole day/week... should I spend everything on this item?"
Are you frequently "broke"? (read: barely able to repair gear)
I was when TBC came out but I managed to buy my epic-flying mount with the "Netherdrake dailies" and after that never got "poor" again. I keep the things I wanna buy/have in a "to-do list" and slowly accomplish them. You don´t get broke if you buy stuff slowly.
Have you ever borrowed gold from someone? Did you pay interest?
Just once, ex-GM gave me a couple hundred gold to buy the pattern for the drums of restoration. Paid him back sometime later, no interest tho. A couple weeks later Blizzard made the pattern trainable =/
Have you ever loaned someone gold? Did they pay you back promptly, if at all?
Yes, once, like 500g to a big friend. No, I didn´t get my money back but never asked for it either. We helped and help each other so much that I dont even do the mats about things I ask or give.
"One hand washes the other, both washes the face"
.
What are the top 5 things you spend gold on?
1- Gear, enchants and gems. As harcore raid PvEer I always buy the best I can get.
2- Consumables. Flasks, potions, oils and food. Lots of them.
3- Patterns. Always try to have them all to craft stuff for guildies and friends.
4- Rep items. Even when theres nothing else to grab for instance from a exalted faction I still go all the way through. Tomorrow can be the day that Blizzard adds something new to that faction and prices on these items will just sky-rocket.
5- Stock. When I have too much gold I just buy stuff I think its cheap now to re-sell it later on. You can make a lot of gold of it if you know what to buy and when to sell.
And this is actually my priority list as well. Everyone should have one like this to avoid spending on things you don´t really need.
Is 1 gold worth haggling? How about 10 gold?
Depends. For me its all about time. Some people play their alts and "I just use the gold my alt makes on himself. I dont transfer my gold around" and I´m like "But on your main, in one hour you can make 130g on dailies and on your alt you make just 20g in one hour. Just make the gold on the main, transfer to the alt, get him to 70 and you will have 02 toons making 260g in 02 hours".
So I don´t think every cent counts, It doesnt matter how rich you´re, all that matters to me is how much gold you can
make
.
Everyone can be rich in a month of farming but who can be rich in a day?

Do you spend impulsively? Do you track how much you spend?
I try not to spend impulsively - emphasis on "try". I've sort of resigned myself to the fate of not having an epic flyer anytime soon. Try as I might, something always comes up - either helping a friend out by working on their Spellstrike set or restocking the guild bank with herbs for the raid alchemist, the money seems to run out faster than it comes in.
Hopefully now that I'm Exalted with both Scryers and SSO I can start banking some gold...
Maybe I'll start sending the gold to an alt and try and "forget" about it. :P
Are you frequently "broke"? (read: barely able to repair gear)
I don't know that I've
ever
gotten this broke since I hit 40. The closest I came since then was the final grind to get my Enchanting to 375.
I am, however, currently too broke to completely gem the lovely healing helm I got from Kael'thas in MgT last night. :P Finally an upgrade to get me out of the Cobra Commander helm I've been wearing for the past 3 months.
Have you ever borrowed gold from someone? Did you pay interest?
I've had friends give me a couple of small loans before, but there were no real specific terms to it; typically I'll pay them back with free enchants using my mats.
Have you ever loaned someone gold? Did they pay you back promptly, if at all?
See above, in reverse.
What are the top 5 things you spend gold on?
1. Raid elixirs. I usually check the AH before raiding to see if I can restock any of the typical raid stuff in the guild bank.
2. Raid mats. Similar to 1, I'll buy "cheap" stacks of herbs or enchanting mats for oils in order to restock the guild bank before raids.
3. Formulas. There are times when I see a formula on the AH and I just have to have it, even if it is pricey.
4. Alts. I've got several alts that I send money to in order to help gear them up.
5. Rep items. While I don't mind farming for enchanting mats (Primals, etc.) I absolutely hate farming rep items for some reason. That's why I just dropped 250 gold yesterday to finally get my Scryers rep capped off at Exalted. :P
Is 1 gold worth haggling? How about 10 gold?
In all honesty, what with dailies I don't know that 10 gold is worth fighting over if it's something that I really need/want. That's one daily, and even without an epic flyer I can knock out all 25 dailies in ~3 hours.

1)Do you spend impulsively? Do you track how much you spend?
-Not usually. I just hit exalted with the SSO and picked up a new shield, but other than that, no major purchases (and this one was only 30g).
2)Are you frequently "broke"? (read: barely able to repair gear)
-As a paladin tank, I'm surprised this isn't the case...
3)Have you ever borrowed gold from someone? Did you pay interest?
-Nope. A friend gave me 10g when I was 20 and he was 70, to help me get started...I tried to pay him back a few levels later, not yet realizing how little 10g was at level 70.
4)Have you ever loaned someone gold? Did they pay you back promptly, if at all?
-Once loaned someone I had grouped with a few times 5g to respec. Got 7g back from his apparently wealthy alt the next day. I had written it off as a loss, so it was a pleasant surprise.
5)What are the top 5 things you spend gold on?
-Equipment repairs. Tanking isn't cheap.
-Water. My prot paladin sucks down draenic water like an SUV guzzles fuel.
-Rep gear (but only if it's an upgrade that I'll use for a while)
-Gryphon rides (until I get that epic flyer)
-That's it. Every spare copper goes into the epic flyer fund.
6)Is 1 gold worth haggling? How about 10 gold?
-Never really had this problem...If I need something enchanted or crafted, I have a guildmate or a friend of theirs do it for mats only, or at a reasonable price.

Do you spend impulsively? Do you track how much you spend?
Never for gear. My philosophy is that I'm constantly going to be upgrading via quest rewards up until 70 anyway, so why buy something I'll throw away in a few levels when I can be patient and get it free soon enough?
Are you frequently "broke"? (read: barely able to repair gear)
Not frequently, but I buy and resell stuff in the AH and sometimes I manage to spend everything I have in that endeavor and dip as low as <1g until things sell again.
Have you ever borrowed gold from someone? Did you pay interest?
I've received a couple of smallish (10g and 30g) gifts from friends who already had established characters on the servers I'm playing on. They had no expectations of being paid back, though I've given them some pretty nice things down the road to compensate. So there was interest, but not formally speaking.
Have you ever loaned someone gold? Did they pay you back promptly, if at all?
Haven't loaned anybody gold yet, but if a guildie (and occasionally a random joe) needs some sort of material good I'm generally willing to help or even go to the AH myself and buy it for them.
What are the top 5 things you spend gold on?
Jewelcrafting recipes (ugh)
Mats for said JC recipes
Playing the AH
Ore to smelt when I get lazy and don't want to mine for my skill-ups
Repairs
Is 1 gold worth haggling? How about 10 gold?
No and no. If it's a good deal I take it, if it's not I pass. There's usually too much stuff that's undervalued as-is to spend the effort haggling in pursuit of a better deal.

1. I saved up to get my Flying mount after that it's been tough to save up for epic flyer since all I what I have been doing is echanting my gear lately. I used to have a mule to carry my money but that stopped. Oh well right? lol
2. No I always manage to come up with some extra gold by doing some dailies here and there.
3. I've borrowed gold but I have paid back within a week.
4. I have loaned gold and never got back. I figured as much you need it more then I do but your not your on omy #$%^ list.
5. Enchants, repairs, bullets (hunter), random %^&* I don't need like pets and stuff and helping friends
6. anything higher then 100g is worth haggling about ....
I know I'm so simple...

Do you spend impulsively? Do you track how much you spend?
Not usually (see my last statement).
Are you frequently "broke"? (read: barely able to repair gear)
Nope. The only times I ever did this after learning how the game works, is upon gearing a 70 Protection warrior -- the ultimate twink.
Have you ever borrowed gold from someone? Did you pay interest?
Yes, actually. I have often borrowed gold in the amounts of say 30g up to a couple hundred gold, spontaneously. Usually this was a "one time deal" which I couldn't afford to pass up & needed the cash "without logging onto my mule." I paid the person back a little later (fyi: often I would see a great deal on my main & have no money on the main, see my last statement).
Have you ever loaned someone gold? Did they pay you back promptly, if at all?
I officially loaned two people gold, with minimal interest & 30 days to pay it back. I had to hound one person in particular after 15 days without a payment (he could have done it with installments & I wouldn't have cared). I logged everything using a notepad mod in-game (TinyPad). I would never loan him money again, but I did get it back -- you aren't going to pull one over on me. I screenshot & document, =)
What are the top 5 things you spend gold on?
Gems & mats for just about everything (to resell)
Gems & enchants or buffs, etc. for raids
Repairs (Protection tanks for the win?)
((notice there are only 3 things, as I am 100% Scrooge McDuck))
Is 1 gold worth haggling? How about 10 gold?
I consider everything more than 25 silver worth saving. I obsessively & compulsively round or use numbers which sound & look good. So, I won't worry about 1 or 2 silver, but I will freak out about 5s or 10s. 2, 4, 6, 10, 20, 30 silver, etc. =P
I use a simple addon with FuBar, called MoneyFu which actually tracks the money which comes in across all characters (as a total) & individually each day & week, or month. I make sure to never spend more than I am making. So, typically back in 2.1 I was pulling in around 1600g a week & spending at least 1200g per week with my warrior.
The key though, is to seperate your money. It's like having a reloadable gift card vs. your bank card or a checkbook. Or, as I read a very long time ago, putting a credit card in a bowl of water, then freezing it in the freezer. If you ever get so impatient you need that card, well...putting it in the microwave will mess up the metal strip, =0
I typically keep 50-100g on my main avatar. This character has to keep up & earn his/her own money. At any point in time I get more than 100g, I send all of that extra to my personal bank, Missbanker. Now, Missbanker conducts all real business -- be it trading mats or selling greens, etc. I don't put crap up on the Auction House because someone undercuts you. If I have some rare or useful, for example a piece of resistance gear -- I go the extra step & sell it via advertising. If one is persistant, it works like a charm. The key is to be reasonable & not gouge prices -- building a customer base & reputation is important for business.
I have several characters who can do most of anything I need without someone else. For example, before the great "enchanting" nerf, I had an enchanter (which I still use today). So, getting materials & dusts are as easy as pie -- tank a dungeon, come out with a stack of essences.

Do you spend impulsively? Do you track how much you spend?
- When I first started playing, I did only because I did not know how quickly I can replace gear from instance runs. Now I am much better at saving up my gold and making the gold, however there are still times when I go on a spending spree because my professions skills is pretty close to making/doing something really neat. Usually if I get down to 100-200g I start to clamp up once again and go ultra conservative.
Are you frequently "broke"? (read: barely able to repair gear)
- Never... sometimes I feel like I'm poor but I never have trouble with the essentials such as repairs and consumables.
Have you ever borrowed gold from someone? Did you pay interest?
- Once. Friend wanted me to come along to try and stealth to a key frag in one of the tempest keep dungeons, I didn't know you needed the flyer to get up there at that time, and I had been lazy getting the last 80g to buy it. He gave me the money to buy it, we did the run, and then a few hours later I got the gold to pay him back.
Have you ever loaned someone gold? Did they pay you back promptly, if at all?
- I have never loaned, but I have given people some gold. Only to close friends and we generally help each other out with enchants, bags, mets, etc. for free. I just don't trust anyone else other than the people I have played quite a bit with and have gotten an good understanding of their character.
What are the top 5 things you spend gold on?
- My professions (mats and patterns) and cheap AH green armor upgrades when I can't foresee any dungeon blues handling the job (Healing plate is a killer). I really can't think of anything else to round out my top 5 beyond those two.
Is 1 gold worth haggling? How about 10 gold?
- I don't haggle with people much, but when I'm looking in the AH and considering whether to buy something or not, I am always looking to save that extra silver. Helps tons since when I do buy, I'm buying in bulk.
And for some extra conversation fodder, when I put items up for bid, I try to be fair with it. I am no longer trying to break the bank with that one auction. I used to put items up for even cheaper than I do now, but with an enchanting alt I've decided to increase my prices and if it doesn't sell, I get more mats instead of gold. However, I'm still not looking to seriously wound anyone's wallet. Part of the reason behind this is a new phenomenon that I am seeing where people are trying to corner the market on something in the auction hall. It has probably been going on for a long while, but I've only noticed it recently. For instance, when I started up my holy paladin, I was looking for low level mail "of the eagle." When I would look in the AH, I would find lvl 13 mail pieces "of the bear" going for 2-5g, all put up by the same few people.
Later on, when I was planning ahead for upgrading to plate at lvl 40, I was looking and plate pieces "of the bear" in the 40-50 range were all going for 30-50g. Again, its the same group of people. Now, free market is great. Most people won't buy that crap. I would hope nobody is that stupid, but I wouldn't put it past some. But unfortunately, it has a skewing effect on the market where some person without AH experience takes a look to see what his armor piece is worth and sees it up for 35g from one of these people and puts it up for a similar price thinking they are about to get rich.

Do you spend impulsively? Do you track how much you spend?
It's tough to spend impulsively when most of my items come from quest rewards and dungeon drops. Still, once you're grinding skill in, say, First Aid, and you don't want to go in Dustwallow March just to get the g****mn book for your Expert First Aid... You'll buy it in AH.
Are you frequently "broke"? (read: barely able to repair gear)
Never have I been broke, even with the buying of a mount. I always have enough to repair (Thank God for leather sometimes).
Have you ever borrowed gold from someone? Did you pay interest?
I have never begged for money, never borrowed money, but my GL gave me 5g to get me started, at the time. (Totally random. He said he had more than enough to survive, and trust me, he does.)
Have you ever loaned someone gold? Did they pay you back promptly, if at all?
Nope. I did do the same as my GL to one new "pupil" I took under my wing in the guild (Awwwww), but I have never loaned gold. I give some farming tips, though, to some of my "broker" guild mates :P
What are the top 5 things you spend gold on?
Skills (I'm not yet 70), Repairs, Mats, Enchants, Tips (For ports 'n buffs)
Is 1 gold worth haggling? How about 10 gold?
All depends on the item. If it's that one, rarely dropped epic item that's BoE... You might haggle and hack every copper you can. But then again, it has to be THAT wonderful item that has you dreaming.

Do you spend impulsively? Do you track how much you spend?
I buy what I need. I don't really track my gold (MoneyFu does that a bit) asides from trying to keep it above a certain level (around 1k).
Are you frequently "broke"? (read: barely able to repair gear)
Never.
Have you ever borrowed gold from someone? Did you pay interest?
Yes, for some of my mounts (I am a bit impatient =P). I did pay a small interest (10g) once but that's it.
Have you ever loaned someone gold? Did they pay you back promptly, if at all?
Yes, overall about 500g. I still haven't got most of it back since the two bastards both sold their accounts... I don't really need it so I don't care, altho I'm understandably a bit angry at them.
What are the top 5 things you spend gold on?
Let's see...
Repairs
Gems and enchanting mats
Food/drink
That's it normally. I love being an alchemist. <3
Is 1 gold worth haggling? How about 10 gold?
Not really in my opinion. Obviously every bit counts and I pay as little as possible but I won't start running after something I could get 5g cheaper by extensive searching.
