This raid instance is located in the northeast section of the Blade's Edge Mountains. It has two encounters, High King Maulgar and Gruul the Dragonkiller.
The entrance is at loc 68, 24 in Blade's Edge Mountains.
The trash in Gruul's lair (what little of it there is) is on an hour respawn.
It should be noted that the tier 4 pants and shoulders are obtained from this instance. They do not directly drop but are obtained by turning in other BoP items that drop. (Much like the way the ZG gear is obtained)
Can you just walk in to this instanse? ofc with a raid grp, but thats it?
The trash mobs in Gruul's lair can be pretty hard...
Drop for everyone in the raid or like ZG , one drops and half the group (paladins/rogues/warriors) roll for that one item?
For flasks, please see Unstable flasks
Bandit, Elder, Physician and Soldier can be attained from protecting the Skyguard Aether-Tech Assistant (
) for 10 apexis shards at the crystalforge at Bash'ir landing.
Beast and Sorceror can be attained at any times from the crystalforge/fel crystalforge.
No attunments needed and that is damn good thing
What's the "Raid Lockout" ?
Note the above comment, this is correct for US
EU: Wednesday 4AM
It would be fun if it was a attunement for this raid according to me, and that would be like killing all of the sons of Gruul to get pieces of the key or something. It would go more in the roleplaying spirit
Quick question, and please answer before -'ing into oblivion...
Is this REALLY for 65-70?
We attempted this Raid last night on my server, PuG of 25 people, groups were not put together all that well. We couldn't even get passed the first monster in the dungeon, everyone left pretty quick.
This is the shortest 25 man raid for now.It has like 30 trash mobs and thats all.It takes 1-2 hours depending on the guild's expirience and gear mostly.t4 legs and shoulder tokens drop here. Most guilds raid it after Karazhan and Zul'Aman.Good luck and have fun killing the ogres :>
Actually this isn't quite hard if you know how to tank both ways. (That is: as a mage tank and ofcourse the classic warr tank) In some conditions Gruul may seem more easier than Maulgar. When I first tryed to down Maulgar It was like it was impossible we tryed it about 2-3 times but we failed.(Actually the raid members were pretty well geared) What I'm Trying to say is Maulgar is a bit more strategic. (In my opinion so don't spam downrate :P) If you want toı succeed in Gruul's Lair (the 25-man Raid Instance) you should go with guys who have done this raid many times before.
P.S: You shouldn't even try going to Gruul's Lair with a so called "pug" group because the members who you find on the "Who" tab that is found in the "Social" tab are most likely "newbies". But anyways good luck with killing the moderately overpowered bosses! ^_^
I run kara weekly, then just did this. Kara tipically takes my guild <Worst Case Scenario>(on the Realm Arathor) 2-3 days, we tackled Gruul's Lair as a joint run(with two other guilds, we barely scraped up 25 ppl, they all have tons of 70's, just they dont like to log on at the same time :( ]
we tackled this beast in lke 4 and a half hrs, due to incompetance in ONE of the two other guild's people we had 6 wipes, 3 per boss fight
What is the difficulty for this encounter? Like Karazhan-on-farm-gear, or better?
Thanks in advance.
how long this instance takes in hours? I've heard many versions of it: some ppl did it in 40min (1wipe) so they told, others just have put like 3horus time on it when looking to raid calendar... can you tell me the exact time with decent geared ppl/no wipes or maybe 1-3?
"You'll probably fail if you run in there with all lv70 blues: if you have more than half your gear kara/heroic/crafted epics you're at the level its tuned for."
Is incorrect. What's needed for the encouter of Gruul and HKM is just a mage tank (Can be geared with Merciless+ minimum 8.5k hp UB)
Tanks with Karazhan gear+ (T4 tanks or T5, doesn't matter that much)
Some healers that's got a minimum of 1600+ healing (Which ain't hard to get nowdays. Half blue half epic can do the show for that)
A few hunters, also slightly nice geared (Karazhan + can do it)
Then the rest of the dps can actually be fully blue geared as you encounter this instance. (Yes, I have done it so it's possible :>)
"Of course, nowdays you are 'required' to totally outgear the instance to attempt it...."
In that case you've missed something, as the raids have been nerfed extremely. Once Mag was harder than SSC and TK, now you can enter it with blues/kara/badge/heroic epics, and nothing else, and easily clear it down first try.
would i be able to do gruul if i have 2 blues and a non epic trinket, rest is pvp gear merci gear and stuff like that?
for those wondering, with the recent raid nerfs, gruul can
be downed with 20-man in kara gear. it's quite possible to be done with fewer.
it should be quite easy to pug for this achievement, as long as people know what they are doing for the high king fight.
Just did it on my pally as lvl 66 with my guild we downed em both got my pally shoulders, legs, and some gloves : ] great instance
About how many 80s with raid/heroic gear would it take to do this instance without being horribly slaughtered and mutilated 50 times?
we had about 6 80's and 4 lvl 70's ish and we did it on our second try.
Just make sure you killl them one by one and not scattered =/
Any Helpful hints on the Fights ? I have read about what type of Gear I need PvE vs PvP. Not worried about having a PvP Mage Tanking for me as I have a Pally Tank. Just curious on how to fight the Fights for a Hopefully Successful Fight on the Bosses. Thank You
note to self: not solo-able :)
Just solo'd as BM hunter @ 145k hp and 18k ap. Nuked trash one at a time, healers first. Killed Maulgar's healer first, then casters, then Maulgar himself, had to FD bandage once, but Jadefang held aggro pretty well. Gruul was piece of cake, let pet get a couple KCs in and a growl then blow Gruul up, didnt even have to Mend Pet hehe. Easy like pie :D
Just 2-manned this raid with a 85 warrior and 85 mage, both with an iLevel of 370. The fights are easy, but the casters for the 1st boss (Maulgar) is what causes the trouble.
2 casters (Kiggler and Olm) will always cast Fear or a shape shifting spell that will last for a long time, so it is best to take those 2 down first otherwise you won't be able to do any damage and will wipe. Once they are down, take down the Priest (Blindeye) then burn the boss.
I tried soloing this as a Warrior and getting past Fear and the shape shifting spells was damn near impossible - even if you have dispel trinkets or abilities. It was much easier to take a buddy!
Gruul was easy as cake - just burn.
The fight against the first bosses took me 2 minutes 8 seconds as druid tank ilvl 374, 189k of hp selfbuffed (MotW), well fed buff from Skewered EeI, used flask of enhancement and potion of tol'vir at the start of the fight.
I tried 2 times before become succesful at this fight, first starting against High King Maulgar and the second against the warlock Olm failing at those attempts so I decided to start against the priest Blindeye and this is how I started:
Pop Enrage > Berserk > Potion of tol'vir > Lifeblood > Berserking then charged the priest, used faerie fire and spam mangle, the lock started using fear on me so that came in the wrong moment when the priest was healing itself 2-3 times, seconds later I was having as objetive the lock then I realized the priest was already dead XD so I took revenge against the lock after finish him the rest was a piece of cake.
Druid tank lvl 85
Solo'd today as a Feral Druid.
Keep a Medallion or Insignia of the Horde on you. It helps.
Runescroll of Fortitude
Elixir of the Cobra
Before the fight I set Blindeye to my Focus and then targeted Olm
I popped a
Potion of the Tol'vir
, Tiger's Fury, Berserk, and
(for added assistance). Feral Charged Olm, and then used Ravage, Mangle and Rake. Every time I've tried this I get 5 CP but your mileage may vary. You'll have just enough time to put Rip on him before he CCs you. When he does pop your Medallion/Insignia, put another 5 CP on him and then Ferocious Bite. Blindeye can't keep up with the damage, and he'll go down quickly.
Go after Blindeye now in Bear Form. You'll probably have to use Barkskin or Survival Instincts. He's not immune to Bash so stop his first heal with it and start pounding on him, your health should be low about now so pop Enrage and Frenzied Regeneration, Skull bash his heals when you can and he'll go down quickly. Focus on Maulgar and you should be able to take him out no problem.
Soloed as an ilvl 388 Survival Hunter.
The first boss is simple, find a way to keep everything except the felpuppy on your pet (it will break you out of polymorph) and take out the healer. The rest of the kill order is up to your preference. This fight took a couple of mends on my pet, but he was never in danger of dying.
Gruul is a piece of cake, this fight did not require a single mend. Just stay out of the cave ins and dps him down.
kinda hard to solo on a lock but ill let you know when i get it
got him on 3rd try had to switch specs
Let's Play style review + lore of this raid :
Hope it helps/provides some mild entertainment :P
Solo'd as lvl 90 Fury warrior. Bladestromed all but the polymorpher
Easily solo'able as a moonkin druid at level 90.
High King Maulgar:
Focus on the healer first. After that go for any ;).
Tank and spank.
Gruul's lair solo'd by boomkin
Today (Mists of Pandaria 5.1) went in as an
in ilevel 460 gear and was stun/fear/sheep locked the entire fight on the fir .t boss. I could not even get off enough casts to nuke the casters adds which only have 245k health (realistically, I should be able to 3-4 shot them with arcane blast). Unfortunately, using the copies did not help.
After 14 tries today so far on my 460 ilvl 90 Paladin, it is not possible to solo Gruul's lair. The first encounter is a pain since even a prot pally cannot pump out the DPS needed to down Olm first because of the CC's and him being constantly healed.
Soloed this about 10 minutes ago as a 485 fire mage. The key is to keep shields up, remember slowfall. I two shot the priest to start. the made sure I had Living Bomb and combustion active on cooldowns. All this in between being sheeped/feared/blown into the sky.
Once you get passed the first boss, Gruul is a cakewalk.
Tore this raid apart as a i480 Retribution Paladin.
Opened on the first encounter with guardian and full burn, bubbled when the first CC landed and chewed them apart. Didn't even see half of the ogres go down.
Forgot to buff, didn't eat nor take any flasks, so just Seal of Truth.
Gruul went down without breaking a sweat.
Soloed as a 479 Combat Rogue. Used Blade Flurry + Killing Spree right off the bat which took care of 2 adds, then cleaved down the other 2 (were almost dead anyway) before killing Maulgar.
Easily solo-able by two rogues in ilvl 450 gear. No fancy strategy.
As an ilvl 457 destructolock this was rather easy.
First bossfight was the only straining part, of course.
Voidlord as tank and then spam "rain of fire" and "fire and brimstone" + "incinerate" and the fight went just fine. Kil'jaeden's cunning helped me maintain the rotations, but I don't think it necessary if you prefer other talents. Had to use "Flames of Xoroth" once to revive my voidlord, but my soulstone went unspent throughout the raid.
Gruul was a nukefest and went down in a minute or two.
soloed this as a 454 ilvl ret paladin, sacred shield is best to have in here as it protects you while your being feared, morphed, and horrified to trash...
Soloed this with my 85 DK in 417 item level gear. I did it in blood spec.
The strategy for Maulgar is to kill Olm the summoner first because the Horror he casts doesn't break when you take damage. Polymorph does break with damage. Then kill the other 3. The order isn't critical. I usually kill the mage next then the priest then the shaman. Finally finish off Maulgar.
For Gruul it's just a tank and spank. You can safely ignore his abilities.
Here's the video:
solo'd this as a ilvl 516 human ret pally,
on the 1st boss, used guardian and full burn when first pulled, bubbled on the 1st polymorph, then used every man for himself on the second polymorph. they where all dead just after they 2nd polymorph
on the 2nd boss just nuked him, he went down easy
ilvl 450 guardian druid, just had to use some damage mitigation. Used berserk then son of ursok to burn down olm first. Once he was dead I killed the healer and the rest just fell quickly with some aoe. I tried this at level 88 with a much lower ilvl and the fears got me killed so I waited until 90 to try again. Pretty straight forward once you eliminate the fears.
The first fight was trivial on my 510 Frost Mage. I pulled with a cycle of Livings Bombs on the casters and popped IV and AT once all procs were up. I was feared once, but that was reset by AT. After I just had to spam Ice Lance.
Soloed this as a ret paladin (lv 90). I just focused on killing Maulgar and ignored his four annoying companions. They don't aggro when you start beating up Gruul (who was a piece of cake).
Coordinates to the entrance are 67.9, 24.5.
I sort my comments by "newest," so I don't go by outdated advice, and spent a long time looking in the comments for the coordinates, but had no luck.
/way Blade's Edge Mountains 67.9 24.5 Gruul's Lair
I'm not sure why this got downvoted, other than I forgot to say Gruul's Lair is in Blade's Edge Mountains. The coords are correct. I completely understand if the information is old or wrong, which it is neither.
Just did this on my 483 prot pally. Took a few tries, but I started on the healer Blindeye with AW, Judg, AS, HW, HP, and then popped Divine Shield to give me 8 seconds to tank and spank him dead before the Horrify / Polymorph storm. Once the healer was dead it was cake......took about 3-4 minutes, as my dps on the prot ain't the greatest. Boss actually went down before Olm and the other dude. Bottom line if you're not DPS spec, spank the healer first.
Just did this as a 100 Destruction Lock. Cake walk. Still killed Olm first just because the horrify is a pain in the buttocks. After that it's tag/spam everything with Rain of Fire and let your pet do the rest. As previously stated Gruul is fire and forget.
Done as a ilvl 222 level 80 arms warrior geared for Herald of the Titans. No risk of dying at any time on either of the bosses.
Gruul's Lair Entrance:
even at current content this raid was a cake walk
Soloed as a level 79 retribution paladin with ease. No special defenses necessary, just tank 'n spank. Thought I'd share if you'd like to go for your mogs early!
Gruul's Lair Entrance
Coordinates to entrance are 69.1, 24.1
Ignore the other ones, they led me astray!
