This might be a new beginning for Holy paladin healing... Flash of Light + 2X Flash of Light over 12 seconds (assuming the target has Sacred Shield) might really help with Paladins' future mana problems due to the Illumination nerf.
Might help with the whole Flash of Light spam issue...

Can someone please explain what this means?
I have been trying to search patch notes for what this
"heal over time effect from Flash of Light in conjunction with Sacred Shield"
even means?
Are we getting a HoT from FoL when cast on someone with Sacred Shield Procced or is there a new mechanic for FoL that i am unaware of that is giving us a HoT?
Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Sacred Shield: When a paladin casts Flash of Light on a target with this buff, they also now place a heal-over-time effect on the target, healing that target for 100% of the Flash of Light amount over 12 seconds.

This set bonus is very well worth going for if SS, FoL+HS is your playstyle. Seems like with this set bonus and the FoL+SS changes in the patch Blizz is trying to drive paladins away from the notorious Holy Light spam.
A theoretical example without much thought about the real crits at the gear level you'd have to have for 4p T9 bonus:
7000 Flash of Light crit on the raid member with SS > 7000 over 12 seconds HoT without 4p T9 >> 14 000 over 12 seconds with 4p T9.
Pretty awesome isn't it.

Wow, this is really... Awful, for any raiding holy paladin who can play.
Everyone knows that flash of light aint worth it in 95% of all boss encounters, since youll be better of Beacon + HL.
Buffing the SS hot is really not... hot. :(

Prokne has forgotten two things.
Casting FoL on a target that already has your FoL hot rolling will refresh its duration meaning that if you're spamming FoL on that target you'll never see the hot tick
It's a HoT - many ticks will be wasted while your target is at full health.
And as for
if your smart you'll put the hot onto a DPS or a Healer thats being beat on
are you actually suggesting moving your sacred shield from a tank just so you can get this HoT effect? I don't see that tactic saving anyone's life. The sacred shield itself probably does more absorption per second than the HoT affect does HPS anyway.
I'm not saying that the hot effect from FoL + SS isn't worthwhile I just don't see your theoretical 6xhealing from one FoL method ever being anywhere near accurate or even being the most useful way of using this HoT. Personally, I put beacon and shield on the same tank (the one that's likely to be taking the most damage) and use a FoL on him whenever he's taken healable damage and there's not much required elsewhere.

Sorry I'm just used to not being the only holy pally in raid that I move my SS around a little bit more then what any holy pally should be doing to conserve mana that I didn't specify this. I let the other Holy pally focus on the main tank while I keep my beacon and piggyback their SS hot when were in situations when there's only one tank. And no I didn't forget, hence why I stated the possible use of the hot in a different situation.
Yes its a hot and yes you have to keep casting FoL it to keep it going, (any veteran pally or healer reading any of these comments knows these facts) but with the use of Beacon of Light your effectively keeping it up on 2 targets as well as not allowing the second party dieing and allowing the raid to slowly dwindle due to others mistakes. And of course you can't see the active healing of a hot when more then one healers are keeping a tank up in a raid situation, the design behind a hot is to make up heals while your casting. And please don't respond to this that its up to the raid healers for this situation, your still doing your job of keeping the MT alive as well as others alive. Whats the use of beacon if you don't make full use of it.
And I did state that putting SS and the hot is only really viable in situations where there isn't 2 or more tanks.

My post was to stress to pally healers that haven't moved past the idea that we have more choices then what we had back in BC or vanilla. Beacon allows us to heal more then one target, SS allows us to have a hot active on a tank, or in situations where a healer is being targeted by adds because their tank has died and they have all the aggro. Or in another example, a player in a targeted damage situation like Ignus' pot, Kolo's hand, or bad threat management. Reducing the incoming damage to a non tank as well as conserving mana instead of using a bunch or HL to make up for the survivability of some classes. I gave the example of a non tank target as an example, nothing more. Its up to the pally to use their heals wisely.

The SS hot might be good in
theory
, but it doesnt do the job in a real raiding environment.
Ill suggest that you check your Recount addon for Healing done, click your name and check the healing done from this SS+FoL-hot.
To place the SS hot on 2 targets to get the "6 flash of lights" you curiously wrote about, you need, like, 3-4 GCD's.
In these 3-4 GCD's, you could have casted, 3-4 Holy Lights instead. Lets use 3 Holy Light's as our value here.
The everyday holy paladin does around 70% overhealing, depending on the skill of your fellow healers, of course. With 50% average crits on HL's, we can assume that one out of these three Holy Light casts crits. That's 10k + 10k + 16k, giving a total healing of 36k. Assuming 70% OH this is ~25k healing done, in three casts of ~1,5 sec, which equals 4.5 sec of casting.
Comparing to the FoL+SS-hot and the healing output it gives. Assuming 1 sec GCD and casting time on FoL/SS, gives us 4 seconds of casting (2 SS and 2 FoL). Assuming 50% crit gives us 1 FoL-crit and 1 Normal FoL. 8k+4k + 2 ticks of 1600+800 (assuming this 4-setbonus) = 14,4k healing in 4 sec, + some absorbing, Im not really sure about the numbers on these, but we can probably go with 2k per bubble up, giving 4k extra "healing". Which means, we are up to 16,4k healing in 4 sec. I wont account any OH at this point since I assume that these casts are more accurate and doesnt "miss".
And, to account Beacon, just throw in the numbers we got, minus absorbs and hot-ticks, remove 70% and you got the bonus numbers.
This doesnt give an accurate picture, but as a healer you cant get a really good picture since healing is very dependant on what encounter is played. The harder encounter, the more profit from using your Holy Light!
EDIT: Wanted to add a tip for every holy paladin that thinks spamming Holy Light is too hard on your mana. The key is
Divine Plea
and
Divine Illumination
. Make sure you use them
as much as possible
. I activate my Divine Plea early, maybe at, 15% mana loss and keeps the Holy Light's going, keeps my mana topped for a bit into the fight, and in phases where alot of healing isnt required, I use Judgement + Melee with
Seal of Wisdom
. With full-gemmed intellect and over 35k mana raidbuffed a simple proc of the seal gives loads of mana. And if you still cant keep the mana up, yell at your druid and he will give you a Innervate, make your priest use Hymn of Hope (helps to time this with Plea) or ask the resto shaman to use Mana Tide-totem. Keeping your mana (and your raid) up will be a no-brainer from now on!

I don't know what you're getting at here. The HoT from SS+FoL is not significant enough to "keep anyone alive".

The sort of damage that DPS or healers take when they're being beaten on is not the sort of damage you can use two GCDs for in order to get a heal over TIME. This sort of healing is imperative, fast and direct.

What exactly are you expecting this HoT to do? We are not druids, we're not based around this HoT - it's expensive in mana and time to setup on the raid and the reward is something you could do without all that bother in a way that might actually count towards something beneficial - healing the raid with just flash (at a quicker cast rate than the hot tick and obviously 12times as much healing per time without even taking into account the time for the SS!) The raid just simply doesn't take the sort of damage that can be effectively healed this way.
Or in another example, a player in a targeted damage situation like Ignus' pot, Kolo's hand, or bad threat management. Reducing the incoming damage to a non tank as well as conserving mana instead of using a bunch or HL to make up for the survivability of some classes. If all you're saying is 'remember this HoT, it's a useful tool in some situations' then I whole-heatedly agree and these are OK examples assuming you start healing elsewhere other than the person you hot - but this is weird because in these situations the people who're potted or gripped become prime foci for healing. Say you hot up someone who's just been put in the pot: You've used two GCDs to get this far and can now only use mana inefficient heals to heal this person unless you want to nullify the HoT you've just spent ages setting up or you can leave your SS where it is (for either future or current damage) and FoL the potted person and some other raid members at the same time for a much higher and much more mana efficient throughput. Though I accept that a good message is 'if you're not SSing a tank, remember to use it elsewhere', I just don't see that moving it around in order to get the HoT component can have much benefit when the SS will likely have more benefit in these situations left where it is.
Anyway, I think most paladins would agree that while this set-bonus is worth having it's not the sort of benefit that you'd want to gain at the sacrifice of better itemised off-set gear such as
Chestplate of the Frozen Lake
and its heroic equivalent.
