If you dont already have 40 dmg on your wep I spose this is worth it, but such massive mats for a 14 dmg increase seems a little steep to me

actually after thinking back and forth, in the end i do think it is worth it, after all. If you think you're ready to take the next step in maximizing the damage available, this is a must have. +14dmg is not much, but it stacks in the end with all the extra effort you put to upgrade your socketed gear. And by the way, at that point you probably already have those easy farmable/craftable 6 void crystals, and all the prismatic shards along with the essence.

And speaking about the primals, well, 20 primals is farmable in one day. I don't know about you, but if i was a hardcore epiced out guy with the best gems/thread out there, why not skip kara/SSC/arena for that day and go for those primals instead. After all, it all stacks up. And hey, you get a sexy glow there aswell.

Getting this enchant or not simply depends on how long you think you'll keep the weapon you put it on.

I play a shadowpriest, using Nathrezim Mindblade for main-hand. Having scouted wowhead, allakhazam and thottbot I found the next upgrade for me drops in in Mount Hyjal (unless Vashj and Kael'Thas have some unrecorded drops). Pretty easy decision to spend some extra mats on getting the best enchant there is for something I'm gonna keep a looong time.

As for glows, this one probably gives a pale-blue pulsing one. I've only ever seen it on the dagger I use myself though, which has a pale-blue glow of its own, so it's hard to say for sure. However, I don't remember the mindblade pulsing before I put the enchant on.

If you buy all mats from AH it comes down to roughly 700g depending on your server. Or you can of course farm the primals which you can easily do in one day, and if your a enchanter you can disench all the gear you find for the essences, shards and, if you find some high-lvl stuff, even the crystals. IMO well worth it for maximizing damage either you buy it or farm it.

on my server this will cost about 800gold so considering 250gold is enough for a +40 enchant i wouldnt put it on just anything butofcourse if you finally get the staf/blade you always wanted i wouldnt hesitate.

Very much worth it for a Shadowpriest, +14 dmg makes quite a good amount and the bonus is that it's glow is awesome.

All these comments about sexy glows and mats being no issue should, in my opinion, be left for Thottbot threads. The glow is at best a personal preference (i personally think the +40 spelldamage looks way cooler), whereas the speed of farming mats or money varies as widely as stats among players.

When it comes to usefulness it all comes down to
a) how much money one is prepared to burn and/or how much one is prepared to farm for a (marginal) upgrade
b) which class/build is in question here.

For a shadow priest, full affliction warlock or full frost mage this is a decent upgrade, although considering the cost, it is worth putting only on a more-less endgame weapons, which are unlikely to be upgraded in any foreseeable future. Its usefulness naturally drops with the use of any mixed type spell damage, especially in long fights (like immolation DoT in case of a warlock).

Using an online warlock DPS calculator (http://ferox-horde.de/downloads/4/warlockdps.php) for a heavy affliction build (still uses immolate) with its default stats (see below) the resulting damage output increase over a 10-minute fight (compared to a regular +40 spelldamage enchant) is a whopping 243 (!!). Or in other words, in this particular scenario both enchants provided almost the same damage output (see below for settings). Naturally in a non-immolate scenario or trash fights the results would be much more in favour of soulfrost.

Settings in online calculator: duration and stats = default, case 1 = 1040 spelldamage, case 2 = 1000 spelldamage with 54 shadow damage, ticked Fel Armour, Drain when low, use CoA, 5 soul siphon effects, full affliction except improved CoA + improved SB, bane and devastation.

If you want max out your shadow/frost damage, how else are you going to do it? To achieve the maximum possible damage you need the maximum possible spell damage, and this is how you do that. Now it just comes down to who wants/needs to achieve maximum damage?

I charge 20g for this enchant. What do you all charge? (their mats ofc)

not worth it, just do 40 spell. save yourself 1000g

I think it's at least noteworthy that in the expansion pack, there is actually going to be a class that gets the full benefit from this. Death Knights are the only class - barring any items or trinkets or anything like that - that can deal both frost and shadow damage. I'm not saying this is going to be the enchant of choice for discerning Death Knights everywhere, it's just something interesting.

In contrast, Sunfire can be used by arcane or fire mages for the full benefit. Because of this (from what I've heard, and this was a while back), Blizzard set the damage bonus on Sunfire lower than on Soulfrost. I think it was something like they didn't want anyone one enchant to only favor one class, or it being a mild balance issue...? Something along those lines.

Anyway, when the expansion hits, it would be interesting to see if Blizzard drops this down to a +50 bonus, like Sunfire is. That would give warlocks at least the option to choose whether they wanted this or Sunfire. I'm not saying that specs don't matter, but as most people did point out, 4 points of spell damage is 4 points of spell damage, especially in a raid. And while I can't rationally imagine a scenario where a guild would force a destruction warlock to respec to affliction and get this enchant for the purpose or raid DPS (or, worse, force that warlock to use Soulfrost even on a full destruction spec), I can't say I would be thrown for a loop to see that it's happened.

Like I said, I just think it might be interesting.

Is it worth the upgrade ?

YES !

Why else would we bother use gems that upgrade your spell damage from 9 to 12 ?

Bottom line is : see it from a raid perspective ! If everybody starts saying : I don't want to spend one hour farming for 6 primal water... how much raid quality do you lose ?

Minor upgrade + minor upgrade + minor upgrade == ?

All those little extras makes the difference between a boss killed and one that wiped you at 10%

Reagents are a non issue at this kind of level.
