As of patch 4.0.1 mining grants XP.

At level 72 (with approximately 400 mining) I'm getting 1500xp from each cobalt vein whether I skill up or not.

Did a test and went back to Outland and got about 700xp from Adamantite (green) and even got a couple of hundred XP from mining Fel Iron (grey).

This XP is doubled if you are currently in 'rested' state too.

At lvl 78 with full rested bonus and 450 mining I was getting 1k xp from cobalt and 4200 xp from saronite. I only needed 2 bubbles of xp to lvl to 79 so I farmed for a short time after doing my JC daily and got my lvl. This is a nice change to help make you feel like you're getting something out of it when you need to farm for materials. Now if they would just do the same for fishing haha

Ore deposits have become far more abundant in seemingly all of the zones changed in the 4.03a patch, so leveling your skill from 1 to 300 is now easier then ever.

However, it should be noted that the phasing present in all of the zones can effect the visibility of ore nodes, so you might end up seeing more ore, less ore, or even no ore at all then someone else depending on how many quests you've done.

Cataclysm Mining
I've found it easier to level mining and gather nodes from lvl 425-525 here:
Mount Hyjal: 425-475 (You could stay here to 500 too! just that there's more elementium to be gathered elsewhere.)
Deepholm: 475(500)-525

If you're a Druid, and level 80 (and don't want to level yet), doing the quest for Vashj'ir that gets you into the starting ship for your zone and the one after (that awards the Sea Legs buff) gives you 450% speed on your Seal Form immediately.

Combine that with relatively low competition in the western half of the Abyssal Depths, and you have a nice place for some Obsidian farming.

I ended up doing this for a while since my Druid is neglected, and doesn't have 280% flying - I hate flying around at reg flight speeds.

More data. Have been curious about just how much XP is granted for different things AND because I am bored and farmed Deepholme for a bit.

Toon level 83
Mining skill 525
Fully rested.

Obsidium is Gray for Mining skill.
Obsidium Vein - 6050 XP per node.
Rich Obsidium Vein - 9680 XP per node.

Elementium is Yellow for Mining skill.
Elementium Vein - 9680 XP per node.
Rich Elementium Vein - 9680 XP per node.

About 1 hour flying around Deepholme. 60 Elementium Ore, 113 Obsidium Ore, a few volatiles. 448k XP gained (5.2 Million XP to level) A little less than 10% of a level in 1 hour. Roughly 11 hours to make level 84. It would be quite a bit slower to use Mining to level all the way, but not super, painfully, incredibly slow.

Level 85 requires 9 Million XP. That could be a bit on the boring side I suppose.

Since the old world has been sundered it's actually one of the easiest grinds for mining. Nodes are plentiful, compact and uniform on the map. Outlands is still awful with widely spread with up to several minutes passing between nodes.

the one thing i dont like about mining is when you get to about 420 i think, you have to search for like ever to get to 450 but the good thing is that you get tons of money for selling the things in the AH. What i like about the mining.

keep a spare set of gloves in your bag, enchant with "gatherer" adds +5 to your mining.. will allow you to mine the bosses that require 530

I'm a 47 (now) Worg Rogue, & just spent an hour (57 min and a few seconds, actually) mining Thousand Needles, starting from the north end (Feralas) and going a north to south, slightly east, then south to north (and repeat) pattern. Then going completely around the edge of the Shimmering Deep from the nw in a counter-clockwise path, finishing it where I started on the SD.This is what I yielded:

207 - Mithril Ore
73 - Iron Ore
18 - Gold
11 - Truesilver Ore
4 - Silver
6 - Aquamarine
3 - Citrine

Not bad for a little less than an hours work. And that is with a 85 NE Druid, a 53 Orc-lock, and a 44 Dranie Shaman mining also. I'm guessing its a pretty good area to mine most of the time. Has anyone had similar/better results?

As of patch 4.2.2 the "old world" skill thresholds for mining nodes and smelting ore have been significantly lowered. This makes it much easier to level mining.

Copper: 1
Tin/Bronze: 50
Silver: 65
Iron: 100

For anyone who is a 19 twink like i am, and had already trained for Artisian mining. Don't level it to 300 to recieve Rank 4 of Toughness. I ended up nerfing myself because Rank 4 requires you to be level 25, and the effects will not apply, as well as losing rank 3 because the higher rank removes the lower ranks.

For the best resource for determining the Cataclysm adjusted mining levels as well as the best zones to farm them in, browse through the Mineral Veins listing.

For example you can see that Iron Ore can now be mined at 100 skill level and Feralas has the most nodes of all the zones.

I have just taking up mining and am smelting adamantite and it's gone grey at 340 but says that I need to be 350 to get to Cobalt/Eternium/Felsteel. How do I get the extra 10 points I need to get up to the next smelting point? I can add Gatherer but that would only make me 345. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I know about Enchanted Elementium but cant get into the raid dungeon to obtain that recipe. Please help :-)

I've come back to the game recently after 3 years away, so not sure when this was added or how it occurred...

Currently levelling a DK through Outland and was level 64 and mining capped at 375, when I dinged 65 and realised I was now gaining skill points again for mining.

A quick look at my professions tab told me I had automatically learned Grand Master Mining!

Anyone else noticed this? Or has a 3 year hiatus returned me to Noob status again :-/

I'm not sure about the best place to post this information, but with the new patch (4.3), my small map kept disappearing each time I looted ore. I fixed this by going to Interface -> Controls and checking "Open Loot Window at Mouse", which fixed the problem. I'm not sure how, but I hope this helps anyone else who is getting frustrated.

For those of you developing mining alts in Cata, I highly recommend selecting Engineering for your other primary profession. Then you can make yourself an Electrostatic Condenser. Extra Volatile Air is nice!

Power-leveled a DK to 450 mining to see how much experience I would get from obsidium ore at lvl 65. Only got 1600 exp per node rested and with 4 heirlooms. Seems low compared to other people's numbers. I wonder if they nerfed the experience or have it set to give significantly diminished returns if you are much lower level than the zone. Anyone else ever mine obsidium ore with a lvl 65?

Ah mining, the profession that can land you a lot of gold with time and patience. Once you mine any necessary ore to increase your skill and go train it some more and after you level up any second profession you might have, sell your leftover ore/bars on the auction house, you'd be surprised at the prices even the most common and easy to get ore can sell for. I once sold a couple copper ore for 30 gold each! People sometimes choose two professions that are completely unrelated and buy all the necessary mats on the AH(auction house). Keep an eye on the prices for ore/bars on the AH while you're at it since you wouldn't want to auction three silver bars for lets say 80 gold when the other silver bars are posted for 50 gold. I'm not sure about the other two gathering professions since I've only auctioned ore and bars on my tauren dk and my alts all have different professions. Anyhow, feel free to tell me how you feel about my post and if you're going to downrate me, please leave a comment that explains why you don't like it or didn't find it helpful. One more thing, I didn't expect this comment to be so long.

Im having a problem leveling mining from 340 to 350. I have read the entry by Eversoris, but no one has offered any useful solution -- certainly not Kaipatu. Maybe if people like Kaipatu would put some effort into knowing what they're talking about rather than making condescending remarks insinuating others arent playing the game correctly, we may have an answer to some of our questions. For everyone's info, when smelting Fel Iron goes gray at 340, so does the ability to gain levels mining it. The next possible ore to mine is Adamantite and you have to be level 350 to mine it. So "going out into the world to mine" rather than being lazy as was suggested doesnt seem to be an option. My toon is too high a level to get into the raid and try to get the book to learn smelt Enchanted Elementium. The glove enhancement only would give me a level of 345. Anyway, please help me and maybe a b;uch of others.

I've found this on two toons when the ore goes gray yet not high enough to pick up the next ore. If you mine the different "rich" ores that you can, sometimes you pick up a higher ore which then increases your mining skill by default. This is how I got from 340 to 350

As of patch 5.0.4 you no longer need a mining pick to mine. They are optional now and provide a buff (+10 mining skill). There seem also to have been at least some major shifts in required skill ranges for nodes. I was able to mine tin ore at skill level 19. Not sure if this is intended.

You're not going to be Smelting any skillpoints in Mists of Pandaria. 熔炼幽冥铁 goes grey at 525 and you don't learn 熔炼延极锭 until 600.

Just to let you all know when a mining node turns yellow, green, or grey and you have a item that gives +10 mining (or skinning/herbing) it really turns that color in 10 more points. For some reason when you have those items equipped it shows the mine as 10 mining points off, however you still have those 10 points before the change. So some grey mines are still green and you can get another 10 points before you get nothing.

As an old miner from way back where you had to climb almost impossible (sometimes impossibe w/o a flying mount) mountain heights to get to the sparkling node, has anyone noticed the nodes no longer sparkle? Is it just me or my addons or what? Its harder to pick up now since they don't sparkle. Also, before, I would be notified of an ore node in my minimap and could swoop down and tap it. Now I get a lot of false positives with hardly any nodes to mine.

Presently I'm in Zangarmarsh at 292 with another toon but no sparkling nodes and a lot of false positives. Is this due to the MoP expansion? I really miss the sparkling ore nodes. If anyone can let me know what I'm missing to get my nodes to sparkle again and to just have a node notification to mine rather than the false positives it certainly would be appreciated. Thanks!

I do have a DK 90 level at a 600 Zen Master level but most of that, up to I believe 525, was in Cata where the nodes sparkled. Maybe its an addon I need or an adjustment but open to all suggestions. Again thanks!

Mining White Trillium Ore is especially useful for Jewelcrafters in Mists of Pandaria because it prospects to Sparkling Shard which are needed for the JC-only Serpent's Eye.

not sure if the above statement is using outdated info or not, but prospecting *any* of the mist of pandaria ores can give sparkling shards. i've gotten enough for 30-40 serpent's eyes from ghost iron alone.

If you get stuck trying to level your mining, don't forget the profession quest at the Darkmoon Faire! The one for mining is Rearm, Reuse, Recycle, picked up from Rinling (the guy at the shooting gallery, 49.6, 60.6). You pick up 6 pieces of tonk scrap. Turning in this quest will get you 250 rep with the Darkmoon Faire, and +5 points in mining skill. Plus a bit of gold, game tokens and prize tickets. You can do this quest once per Faire. Also, there are items/enchants that will increase your mining ability by a few extra skill points to get you to a higher level so you can train up: Goblin Mining Helmet, Gnomish Army Knife (this doesn't stack with other items), Enchant Gloves - Mining, and Enchant Gloves - Advanced Mining. There are probably others I don't know about.

I have reached level 340 in smelting with Adamantite....my trainer won't train me for the next level until I reach 350....and Adamantite is greyed out....what do I need to do?

Gripe time....be warned. Don't like doing this, but some things about WoW really get my goat (yes, I know, I need to get out more).

It seems to be becoming a common trait amongst players that when they hit lvl90, they decide to take on 2 primary professions, I hasten to add not CHANGES of profession. For the purposes of this article; Mining & Blacksmith. FFS why? If you want to learn how to do these things & benefit your character why not start when you're setting out on your journey through Azeroth? No, instead you raid averse lot want to find escape from the tedium of TI & IoT dailies by blitzing your way around all known kingdoms gobbling up resources that genuine levellers are in need of. On top of that you also dispatch any & all mobs (again needed by afore mentioned players) in your quest to build gear that you probably will never need.
This is not how the profession system is supposed to be used. OK, if you want to change to learn a new 1 then fine, no problem. If you're that bored grinding out the same old quests day after day then try some dungeons or raids, & no I don't mean running lvl60-70 instances as a solo (like the guy I know who at ilvl551 ran Hellfire Citadel). That's just sad.

This seems to be part of an endemic quality surfacing now within the game whereby players want 'immediate' success & reward, rather than having to work a bit for it. Attitudes to the RNG system are getting more whiny because they hit a Boss but didn't get the drop they wanted.

OK, that's it. So don't wait until you're 'super-level' before learning a profession. You will enjoy it a lot more & it means you don't have to spend hours flying around loads of regions looking for the next rock you need to smelt!

im currently thinking about skilling mining on my prot pally to make some gold at the start of wod but then i notice that the thoughness ranks that give you stamina have been removed, anyone know if they will be put back in at 700 skills? if so it will be a total worthless proffesion class wise.

What I have seen about the Auction House on my server for horde:

Based on my selling profits, my priorities are:

Thorium
Mithril
Copper
Iron
Truesilver
Ect.

These ones are based on my average selling price compared to the time it takes to mine. As a note: Thorium is a popular ore to mine already. If you come on when there is not many people, go straight for thorium. Rich Thorium Veins are worth stopping for. Sometimes, the small ones are not. To mine Rich Thorium Veins, you need a higher mining level than Small Thorium Veins. Winterspring is my preferred location for mining Thorium.

My Mithril hunts usually lead to Eastern Plaguelands. Here you want to go around the border of the top half of Eastern Plaguelands for maximum results. I find going counter clockwise from the EastWall Tower and returning when reaching the lake for another cycle. Truesilver is a good source in here and in Winterspring too.

My copper is usually all over Eversong Woods. I have no tips for that, because of the large variaty of area of copper. I do the Western half starting at the scar.

Iron is tricky. While it goes for quite a bit, the time is what kills it. Feralas and Desolace have a high content, but my opinion of the layout is they are hard to follow. I enjoy doing it in a counterclockwise around the peremiter of the middle and bottom half of Western Plaguelands.

Feel free to add any that you feel might sell for a profit, and give a direction.

With the advent of garrison mines to every single player which produce more ore than even two profession buildings can burn, I feel Blizzard has done a serious disservice to miners by effectively ruining any point in speccing into this profession. The 3 gathering buildings, barn, garden and mine should have been 1 per player and you have to pick. Giving 2 out of 3 without any sacrifice being made has killed herbing/mining.

I mean it sucks to a point that the gathering profs have waned off in usefulness in WoD, but that only applies to WoD, and you still have access to farming where as alts only get the limited supply from the mine daily. So it's not a complete waste if you don't want to take dual creation profs.

Important facts for Legion:

The first node that I found was a Felslate learning automatically Mining to 800 skill and the quest Felslate Deposit Sample.
While you mining can spam Felslate Basilisk which drop more ore and the quest Living Felslate Sample the first time that kill it. The corpse of this mob can also be minered
If you are in a party with other Miner good news!: Both can mine! but just for the record, you will have few seconds to do it. If you wait like more than 3-5 seconds the other miner will fail. At least for now

Legion notes. I picked up mining again once I got out of the Garrison's mines and mining was worth it again. At level 20 (mining in my garrison), I was able to get 2 Leystone ore on my very first ore node. That bumped me from my MAXIMUM level of 50 to level 800 at once. I no longer have to pay to level my maximum cap in mining. I was still at level 20 tho, so I have been slowly leveling up. The garrison mine only gives me 100 XP per node but can level me up 20 or so a day.

For those having difficulty leveling past 790. felslate Seams grey out at 800. Switch to a pick that does not give you +10 mining and then continue leveling to 800 on felslate seams. I am using 苦工的矿镐, as it was readily available in my bank, but there are several other picks available without +10 mining.

Now, leveling your mining to 800 requires a bit of RNG as you need to get at least 1 or 2 level 3 mining techniques (out of the possible 5; mining creatures doesn't seem to give you skill points).

Edit: As noted, this is obsolete due to changes in 8.01.

This list needs fixing I came looking for certain information and found it to be incorrect. My current mining skill is 379 and my learnt list is different to that displayed here. For me it goes Copper - Tin - Bronze - Silver - Steel - Iron - Gold - Mithril - Truesilver - Thorium - Enchanted Thorium - Fel Iron - Adamantite - Eternium - Felsteel - Cobalt - Hardened Adamantite - Khorium - Obsidian. Next I will learn Saronite - Titanium - Titansteel.

As patch 8.0.1 (8/3/18), currently it is not possible to get 300/300 classic mining by mining nodes alone. Mining 瑟银矿脉 gives up to 290 skill, while 富瑟银矿 gives up to 295 skill. You can level mining from 295 to 300 only through 熔炼黑铁, which is learned from the quest: 鬼魂之杯. If you already completed the quest and need to relearn how to smelt 黑铁锭, talk to 格鲁雷尔 in 黑石深渊.

300 mining is required to learn how to 熔炼附魔源质 from 地精的源质熔炼指南, since Wrath of the Lich King. Prior to Wrath, the recipe could be learned by mind controlling 大元素师克里希克 in 黑翼之巢 and casting the teach smelting ability on any player in the instance. The spell was learnable with or without mining, and could be crafted starting at 1 skill point once the player learned mining. These legendary bars are required for the well-known 雷霆之怒，逐风者的祝福之剑.

It took a little bit of research to figure this out. I originally thought that 地精的源质熔炼指南 was bugged in 8.0.1 until a GM informed me that my classic mining was only 295/300.

Im facing a problem with the mining profession that dont allows me to buy the 10 copper first training from the mining trainer. I just bought the blacksmithing and engineering professions but the mining first step is red on the trainer. Can someone help me with this situation? Thank you for your time :)

I dropped a useless duplicate prof to startup mining at lev 120, and expected and got a skill of 1 like all other new prof.
I found that bliz must have forgotten us.
I have no smelting skill except for copper and nothing available from the Zandalari trainer.

This is a brain dead alzheimer move by bliz for not having zone skills like all other prof.
sigh.

anyone have an idea?
