I made a guide for a guildy who was levelling alchemy. It's definitely not perfect, but I figured I'd post it since there's no guide for it here yet. A few notes:
1) I tried to stay away from things like Stranglekelp, Wintersbite, Icecap, etc. They can be a pain to gather, since they are only found in specific locations (especially Wintersbite)
2) For the most part you'll be skilling on orange recipes. This is because I wanted to be as sure as possible about how many mats were needed.
3) Where it says "approximately xx combines" that means you will be skilling into the yellow-green range, where "exactly xx combines" means it should be orange the whole way.
4) I'm fairly sure I overshot quite a bit on most of the approximate combines, so you may have extra mats.
5) The northrend section can be done quite a few different ways. Feel free to experiment.
Total mats list is at the bottom (I didn't tally up the vials, I'm assuming you'll buy those as needed).

极效力量药剂
from 385-395 - exactly 10 combines - 20 tiger lily, 10 crystal vial
At this point I would highly recommend doing
转化:泰坦神铁
(note:
水银石
or equivalent required) from 395-420 if you can afford (or are able to mine) the 200 saronite bars required. You can then sell the titanium bars and you will also get a number of transmute discoveries. Otherwise, continue:
极效敏捷药剂
from 395-400 - exactly 5 combines - 10 goldclover, 10 adder's tongue, 5 crystal vial
*see below
不灭药水
from 400(401)-415 - exactly 15 combines - 30 icethorn, 15 crystal vial
符文法力药水
from 415-420 - approximately 10 combines - 20 lichbloom, 10 goldclover, 10 crystal vial
转化:泰坦神铁
from 420-430 - approximately 25 combines - 200 saronite bars
Alternatively, you can stop transmuting saronite at 425 and start doing
转化:大地侵攻钻石
and/or (430+)
转化:天焰钻石
to 435 (440 even, in the case of skyflare)
At 435+ you can start making the various flasks:
无尽怒气合剂
纯净魔精合剂
石血合剂
冰霜巨龙合剂
- for skill. These are very material intensive, and thus I will not list approximate or exact materials here - You're on your own to decide which is most useful to you and/or profitable on your server.
*One of these three is recommended for trinket use if you are levelling your character at the same time as alchemy:
不灭炼金石
-
水银炼金石
-
强力炼金石
- See links for mats (varies)

Wow. thats a lot of saronite. I'm assuming you're a herbalist so how much did the saronite cost?
It varies per server. I've got a miner, too, so I just mined it. However, there are plenty of other options for that range. I ran out of room towards the end (7500 character limit!) so I ended up not compiling the mats for the non-transmute version(s).
*edit* With cata right around the corner you're probably better off taking another route. Half the appeal of the titanium transmute route is getting transmute discoveries easily, which will be useless or nigh useless in cata. So I would say either check the recipe list (there are a few options in that range) or just wait for cata. Chances are 425+ will be a lot easier with expansion recipes.

Thanks Norokelt for your feedback but it wasn't helpful. I was going to the alchemy trainers. What wowhead don't tell you is that you need wotlk to train to be a grand master. That was my problem as I don't have wotlk installed you are capped at 375 skill lvl. For anyone else that has this problem hopefully this will be helpful and you don't have to going running all over Azeroth.

If you dropped your alchemy for another profession but had done one of the mastery quests and then pick up alchemy again later down the road it allows you to learn that same mastery from the quest giver without having to turn in the items again.

Here is a clever hint to keep in mind for low level toons starting Herbalism and Alchemy together. New for Cata - xp for gathering professions.
The same concepts would hold true for mining and associated professions, and skinning with leather working.
Basics,
Herbalism is quick. Alchemy is more time consuming.
1. Choose where to level based on the herbs your need for certain potions.
It is better to level in a variety of places based on your Alchemy needs. Don't get too excited about where you are questing, make the trek to the next area that you need for your Alchemy potions as opposed to getting an area entirely finished from a questing viewpoint. Once you reach max level you can return to any place you want to and go for those questing achievements. Don't worry about the one great blue item you can get for finishing an area. Go to Dungeons to get blue items instead. More effective for getting blue items that help you level faster.
The exception to my rule of moving on - Swamp of Sorrow. The collecting is so great in terms of the xp boost, it makes sense to totally finish this area from a questing viewpoint. It doesn't have a lot of quests anyways.
In Summary,
If you focus on your Alchemy, you will arrive at higher levels with both professions in excellent shape and you will get there faster also by using xp from gathering effectively to help you level. As mentioned this is an effective strategy for other gathering profession combinations.

For 230-245, the recommended recipe is the Elixir of Detect Undead, which requires Arthas' Tear. My question is, since the herb has been rather successfully phased out and is farmable only in instances, which would be a decent substitute for the undead elixir? Or does anyone know if the herb will be once again farmable in world zones as of the next patch?
Edit: Was a bit hasty in my post, having now hit the 230 mark in my alch. The only other trainable recipe, and likely best substitute for the 15 point stretch to 245 other than undead detection, is Dreamless Sleep Potion, req. 45 Purple Lotus, 15 Crystal Vial to achieve the same end results as the elixir. Easier farming as well, as Purple Lotus is still found in Felwood.

To change specializations:
Go to the guy you got your orginal specialization quest from - and unlearn your specialization for 150g.
Go to the guy for the specialization you now want and there should be a conversation button you can click when you interact with them.
Click and you are done!
Potion Master:
Lauranna Thar'well
Elixir Master:
Lorokeem
Transmute Master:
Zarevhi
You should now be able to /target NPC and look at minimap for the new target blip to find them easily.

my suggestion for specialization: go potion spec while leveling your alchemy skills and then switch over to transmute at max level.
while leveling, you're going to be cranking out tons of potions and the specialization can help you earn a bit more money on the auction house... once you're alchemy skill is maxed out, though, you can keep making money by just farming transmute mats (or selling your cooldown in Stormwind)
personally
, I'd shy away from elixir specialization unless you're in a raiding guild and find yourself cranking out tons of flasks every raid night. as a non-raider, I generally stick with
Flask of Enhancement
for my own needs and flasks typically sell at a loss on the AH (versus selling the raw mats)

Do you want to make money with a profession? If i were you, i would take Alchemy. I think it's easy to max (compared to Jewelcrafting, Enchanting etc.).
How to earn golds with alchemy?
If you are lazy (like me), you should choose
Transmutation
specialization. The best profession to pair with transmutation mastery is
Jewelcrafting
. Jewelcrafting is more difficult to max, but if you have another character for herbalism and mining, it's the best choice. Prospect some ore with your JWC, then transmute uncommon gems with alchemy (on my realm, profit isn't very good, but you have chance to create more with your specialization). Then create gems with your JWC. Of course, check auction, some gems are more profitable than others. Don't forget to create Truegold every day. Again, profit on my realm isn't very good, but sometimes, I create 5 truegolds on 1 cooldown (so the profit for one day can be over 1600 golds!) And this is the best profession combination for stats too (2 epic gems + better flasks)
If you want to farm, pick
elixir
specialization. Pair it with
herbalism
. It's very profitable, if you have enough time to farm herbs. It's simple: just farm herbs and create flask, which is the most expensive. Best alternative if you don't have character for gathering, or you don't want to skill JWC. Stat bonuses are worse than first alternative, you will get better flasks, weak heal and some haste.
And last choice is to pick
Potion
specialization. I don't think it's good at this point of game (on max level). But who knows, maybe later.
EDIT MISTS OF PANDARIA:
The original post is right, just:
For Transmutation, just change the word Truegold to Living Steel. For additional profit, transmute uncommon gems into rare gems and rare gems into meta gems.
For Elixirs, it's the same. Good if you are a raider and you are creating flasks for raid (there is not any Cauldron at this point).
For Potions, the profit is not the best. I tried it, but the chance of getting more potions is very low, and when you get 2 potions instead of 1, the profit is somewhere about 5 golds. You would have to create literally tons of potions to make some profit.
Additionally, you can buy Golden Lotuses for Spirits of Harmony (3 Lotuses for 1 Spirit), which you can use for rare gems transmutations, or for creating flasks. Or you can use Spirits of Harmony for another Living Steel transmute in a single day. Good to combine with farming, as you can grow Spirits of Harmony on your own farm.
The stat bonuses for Mists of Pandaria: +320 stat from a flask (1320 intellect/spirit/agility/strength instead of 1000), flasks last 2 hours instead of 1 hour (less money spent on flasks) and +320 stat flask you can use in arena.
If you want to
change your specialization
, just visit your alchemy trainer and tell him you want to unlearn your specialization. He will give you the opportunity of picking another specialization. You just have to complete one of his quests. But pick your choice wisely, as the quests are not easy. For example, for Elixir Master, you must give him 8 flasks, what is about 1500g.

On my realm Transmute Truegold is a gold loss ( compared to selling the mats).
Much better to go with transmute living elements to create air or water ( depending on what is currently the most expensive on your realm)

Transmutation Master
- Truegold x 4
Elixir Master
-Flask of the Draconic Mind x 2

So as of patch 4.3, you no longer have to go to the specific Alchemy master to unlearn your speialization. You simply have to open your spellbook and abilities tab, and click unlearn. When you go back to learn a new specialization, the npc no longer trains you. Does anyone know what they changed or where to learn a specialization?

The specializations have changed, for those who have leveled alchemy on another toon before and can't find the quests in Shattrath. You now have to reach 475 before you can specialize and the mats are Cataclysm level. If you want to unlearn one specialization, open Spellbook, go to Professions tab, note the little red circle next to your current specialization and unlearn it by clicking it.

With the update to 5.0.4, it seems that learning the recipes for Potions Master requires buying Mists of Pandaria, as the trainer is in Pandaria. Or, alternately, at least waiting until the potions are available in the auction house.
Love to be wrong on this, but that looks like how it is unless I'm missing something.

It seems that the recipes above skill level 550 are now all discovered - ie: you will learn them automatically and randomly while crafting other recipes.
It also seems that recipes for which you no longer receive skill points do not trigger this discovery. After graying Alchemist's Rejuvenation, I crafted 200 with zero discoveries. After that, I transmuted 20 gems that did have skill ups and every 2 or 3 crafts I discovered a new recipe.

Can any one tell me why Bliz still hates to buff Spell casters? Neither Cata nor MoP has an elixir that will buff Intellect. Bliz won't answer me, maybe someone here can explain.

Since Zen alchemy is pretty much discovery based and I had a truckload of green tea leaves gathered I gave each of my 3 alchemists a couple stacks and made 40 health pots each. The result was that all 3 gained 10 new orange recipes, even after the potion was greyed out (although after it did grey out the discoveries went from every 2-3 crafts to like 10 ish).

The alchemy trinks are not learned, instead random Pandaria mobs (I got mine very early in Jade Forest) drop
Strange Spherical Stone
, which upon getting 3
Golden Lotus
you can turn in to receive the appropriate stone for your class.

You can, actually, level
both
炼金术
and
草药学
without ever having to go to Outland.
净化药水
is still green at 350 skill, and
特效治疗药水
greys out at 345. The materials aren't really hard to come by -
冰盖草
and
山鼠草
are plentiful in Winterspring, and you'll find lots of
黄金参
and
哀伤苔
in Swamp of Sorows. Doing this allows you to skip the tedious grind of Herbalism in Outland, which has spawn nodes all over the zones but rarely any actual spawns.
Then, you can just start doing Northrend Herbalism/Alchemy without any Outland-related trouble.

Okay, for those who got as frustrated as I did -- because the directions ARE NOT CLEAR -- when you pick up Zenmaster Alchemy at level 525, you will get two recipes: Master Healing Potion & Alchemist's Rejuvenation. They're green level recipes, so they're easy to overlook, as they're actually BELOW the Cata recipes in level. You have to make those two green recipes over and over to learn everything else -- then make the new ones you discover to learn even more.
If I sound frustrated, yeah. I am. Nowhere in either this database or the Official guide are the actual recipe names mentioned -- and with the "new" recipes being green, they are easy to overlook, because all of us are conditioned to look for Orange and Yellow level recipes to start with, as usual. You don't expect a new expac to give us GREEN level recipes when first starting out.
Yeeesh.

I am PRE MoP (Cant afford the upgrade yet) what are the best potions & flasks to make for the discovery recipes? are there any that do not require Mana Thistle? I have looked all over for the answers to my questions, but not sure what I have found is the right answers. (sorry I don't think like normal people, so get confused easily) I would be thankful for any help

A quick and easy guide to discoveries, based on lots and lots of reading and my own personal experience. I hope to dispel some myths for completionists who want to get all recipes.
- Primal transmutes. The only way to discover them is to make another (non-Might) Primal transmute. I'm doing them every day, and while the rate actually seems reasonably high (I'd hazard 10-20%), the daily CD means it will take a long time to get them all. Be advised the CD is shared with many other transmutes - all the Eternals, Living Steel, and Pyrite (not Truegold though for some reason).
- BC Cauldrons are the easiest. The discovery rate is VERY high and there's no CD. Each cauldron can only be discovered by making the corresponding resist potion, but expect to get it in 5 mixes or even less. Farming the potion recipe itself is likely to take longer. Mana Thistles are pretty rare, but they spawn in very predictable patterns: they come in clusters of spawn points, always in areas only accessible by flying, and 2 of the spawn points at a time will have a herb. Gather them, wait a couple of minutes, find the new 2 spawns and gather them. Rinse and repeat.
Be advised that there is no Holy Protection cauldron, so don't waste your time and mats!
- The 5 elixirs and the Super Rejuv potion can be discovered by making any elixir or potion from either TBC or Wrath. Conflicting rumours state that Cata recipes also proc the discovery - I have not been able to confirm or deny this. TBC and Wrath flasks are also supposed to work but I haven't used them as they're more expensive to make. I can confirm you do NOT need to make elixirs to discover more elixirs, and I can confirm for sure that Wrath recipes work - I discovered one of the TBC elixirs by making a Wrath potion (Indestructible potion). The discovery rate is really low though, so pick a cheap elixir or potion, line up a hundred, and just burn through them and hope for the best. You may need to go through over a thousand mixes to make all 6 discoveries.
- Eternal transmutes are all discovered by making Wrath transmutes. Transmuting Eternals should discover further Eternal transmutes, but these all share the same CD with Primals and Living Steel. If you don't mind the wait then this is an option. If you want to quickly get all the Eternal transmutes, or are trying to get the BC ones at the same time, or want to save the Living Steel CD, a much faster option is to buy or gather a ton of Saronite bars, and then Transmute Titanium. This will take a LOT of saronite (hundreds of bars) but the discovery rate is pretty good (again 10-20%) and if you're trying to gather Titanium/Titansteel for making Jeeves or a Mechano-Hog this is a great way to kill two birds with one stone.
- The other Wrath discoveries don't need mention, just do your Northrend Alchemy Research every 3 days.
- MOP discoveries can only be made from other MOP recipes. The type of recipe being made has no effect on the type that will be discovered. Grey recipes can still proc a discovery (confirmed by me personally); at the time I made the post this happened at a VERY reduced rate and it was actually more resource-efficient to keep doing orange or yellow recipes, but with 5.4.8 others have reported that the rate of discovery seems to have been significantly increased. By the time you level up to 600 you'll have probably discovered all recipes, or almost all of them, so don't worry if you skip some.
User Irv384 below says he got a Primal transmute discovery to happen while doing a MOP transmute in 5.4, which would seem to indicate that any transmute now has a chance to proc a transmute discovery (and not just within the same expansion). I cannot find the screenshot he submitted and would appreciate further confirmation if anyone else has had this happen.
Happy mixing.

Just a word of warning on the new changes to Herbalism in 5.3. You can now level it exclusively in Pandaria.
HOWEVER, there is no system in place to level inscription or alchemy the same way. So, do not make the same mistake I did, blissfully ignoring collecting herbs as you level a toon. I had to go back and grind my way through all the old content to get mats for alchemy; one full day has me just now starting the WotLK herbs.
tldr version: If you're planning on leveling alchemy or inscription on the same toon DO NOT skip collecting herbs as you level a toon.

Alchemy: the science of understanding, deconstructing, and reconstructing matter. However, it is not an all-powerful art; it is impossible to create something out of nothing. If one wishes to obtain something, something of equal value must be given. This is the Law of Equivalent Exchange, the basis of all alchemy. In accordance with this law, there is a taboo among alchemists: human transmutation is strictly forbidden - for what could equal the value of a human soul...?

I have to say, I'm constantly in awe of the pathetically small number of recipe items in the game for alchemy. There is SO MUCH more they could do for this great profession. Even an update on some of the older pots/flasks would be nice. I have a fetish for recipe items, though. Might be a bit biased.

I realize that Becksflasche's post of 2011/11/13 is rather dated. I took my Alkie to Yelmak in Orgrimmar to spec Elixir and this is now his list of requirements for Elixir Master:
-Flask of the Winter's Bite x 2
-Flask of the Earth x 2
-Flask of Warm Sun x 2
-Flask of Spring Blossoms x 2
I don't know if other alchemist trainers task you differently, but I suspect not. I checked my available recipes based on Becks' list to be sure I had them but I do not. I'll research my missing recipe and move on but check the requirements of any spec you choose so that you can budget your gameplay time accordingly.

I realize that this is a very old thread, but I have been Googling for an hour now and can't seem to find the answer.
I am wondering how many recipes in total are there for Alchemy? I haven't learned a new recipe in about a month and I have tried every single one that would "discover" a new recipe.
Anyone who has an idea where to look please let me know and thank you in advance!

I just had my 3rd alchemist boosted but, I'm drawing a blank as to how I get the pandarian recipes. Since my character was already lvl 60 when I boosted I got the professions as well. You then have to go back and learn all the patterns you want to learn. Well I don't want to spend the gold learning all the useless lvling patterns, I just want to learn the useful ones for current content and, there are none at the trainer. Matter of fact I'm standing in Klaxxi'vess trying to learn patterns from Kil'zit, and the two patterns they are supposed to sell you, so you can learn new patterns, aren't here...anyone had this issue?

Alchemists, are you looking for Transmute: Primal something that are Dropped by: Shattered Hand Executioner ?
Well don't go to shatter halls reg, its only in roic and the very last one to take out too.
Home yourself to the area so you can hearth out and run back for rep at least.
After 4 runs on roic, no patterns dropped, but did get some primal mats... not that i need, just want the patterns.
Dropped by: Shattered Hand Executioner
Drop Chance: 21+%
Transmute: Primal Earth to Life and such..
I don't believe it at this point but will run a few more times, should get 1 at least in a dozen attempts.
Maybe trying to discover these is faster but no luck that route either being at 600 already and they are a 1x daily attempt... the blizzyboys just don't care.

Alchemy can easily be powerleveled from 1-600 in 15 minutes with some preparation.
It takes 3 Crescent Saberfish Flesh to make a Crescent Oil, which will skill you up until 600 once you learn Draenor Master Alchemy.
On my server, the Crescent Saberfish Flesh go for about 90g a stack of 200. It takes 1800 of thrm to make 600 crescent oil.
Voila, You are now an alchemist ready to take on Draenor recipes without the hassle of farming it up. Not too bad if you've got a few K to spend on mats and want an alchemist fast.

I know all but one recipe in Alchemy (a discoverable primal xmute). I started with Alchemy and Herbalism but have since dropped herbalism and leveled enchanting instead. Anyway, as of 6.2.2 Alchemy feels like a fairly useless profession now. It is actually cheaper to buy pots/elixirs etc on AH than to craft them. The only exception being transmutes

I've found that leveling alchemy in draenor is fastest when using the crescent saberfish flesh shown in this video.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=84A1k4gpRRg&feature=youtu.be
It takes about 18-20 minutes which is well worth the money spent on buying the flesh if you don't already have it.

How do I get the "Mist of Pandaria" skills in Alchemy and Engineering on a 110-char that
re-learns a profession that is new for him?
Among other things, I want to transmute "Living Steel". I skipped one of my old professions
professions and took on Alchemy for the fist time, on a 110-char. I could learn the first Legion
skills and even Draenor was ok thanks to my old Garrison, but then it's stop. I have visited
"Ni Gentlepaw" in Dawn's Blossom and the Klaxxi "Kil'zit" in Dread Wastes but either
one of them could learn me anything. How do I start up the "Mist of Pandaria"-professions.
I can at the same time tell that I have the exact same problem on another char, but then
it's engineering that it's all about. On both it's the "Mist of Pandaria" that fails. Pls help me!
Do I have to learn it all from start with peacebloom, silverleaf, rough dynamite and all?

I skipped 2 earlier professions to learn Alchemy and Engineering, but now I'm
having a hell trying to find out how to learn pre-Draenor skills. It must be a bug.
NO trainer teach the skills from start to mist of pandaria. From Draenor and up is
