I have found this to be one of the more useful abilities, since the damage it does is roughly 75% of a pet at the same level. Thus, if you can get the pet down to 75%, this attack can end the battle, totally sidestepping the two round cooldown.
It does not actually root your pet, as ability that receive bonus when target is rooted does not gain the buff when hitting pet doing recharge after using this ability.
Instead, your pet cannot perform any command including attack, capture, pass or retreat during the two recharging turn. However, ability that incurs a forced swap is still effective, such as
OP if rooted doesn't apply.
Sorry, I have to do this.
(Battle Pet) used Hyper Beam!
Be very careful when using this against enemies who can burrow, fly, cocoon, or use any other ability that nullifies damage. Even if this attack misses, you still spend 2 rounds recharging.
Note: If you use this ability as a
to KILL the enemy, you will forfeit the damage buff from being a Dragonkin, since you have to recharge for 2 turns. This may be a given, but it's also easy to forget, so just keep it in mind as you pet battle.
'Legs' from the children's week event gets this ability at just level two for people who like low level battling.
The Hyper Beam of the battlepet world: Massive frontloaded damage in exchange for being stuck doing nothing after that.
Unfortunatley, this isn't quite as assuredly deadly as its Pokemon equivalent, and the extra turn of being forced to recharge can and will put you in an unpleasant place.
When using this ability, be aware of pets that have abilites which make them unattackable, like
, because you'll burn the cooldown for nothing, and give your opponent two free turns to smack your poor pet around.
For maximum effect, get yourself an
and use it in combination with Howl. That combo
WILL ONE SHOT
any non-arcane pet.
This is basically a "I'm going to die and I'm taking you with me" move.
A fun repeatable demonstration of the power of the howl-bomb can be set up on The Beakinator flying pet in your garrison:
Unborn Val'kyr - Unholy Ascension (for +25% damage)
Pandaren Water Spirit - Geyser, Whirlpool (to reduce the enemy to under half health)
Chrominius - Howl (for +100% damage), Bite (to proc dragonkin passive +50% damage), Surge of Power (hope for a crit)
The multipliers in order are 740 (base) * 1.5 (flying) * 1.5 (dragon) * 2.25 (howl+ascension) * 1.5 (crit) = 5619
Of course the setup damage makes the result complete overkill, but it is an interesting exercise. I doubt it is the maximum single hit, there are probably more multipliers (stacked
debuffs, flying pets that debuff themselves?) or a different setup entirely.
edit: Unholy Ascensions don't stack, but Dread Hatchling's Anzu's Blessing does, so:
Curse of Doom, Unholy Ascension, Anzu's Blessing, Howl, Bite, Surge of Power crits for
is the Mechanical version of this 'hyper beam' styled ability.
, the Elemental equivalent works similarly to this, but causes less damage (base 40) without sunlight or more damage (base 60) with sunlight, and with no cooldown.
