Insta-suicide. Think of it as your pet committing seppuku while your worst enemy's hugging him from behind. Or, if you prefer to think of it in more conventional terms, your pet explodes and the enemy gets chunks of bone lodged in his eye. Try not to love this pet too much, is what I'm trying to say...
As noted in the tooltip, a mechanical pet won't be able to come back to life after using this. THAT SAID... if your pet *is* mechanical, and happens to be faster than the opponent, you *will* be able to use this immediately after you come back to life. This attack does 40% of the TOTAL health, rather than the current health, so even if you're straggling at 1 HP, you'll still do a large chunk of damage to your opponent, possibly killing them. A fantastic last hurrah. The more HP your pet has, the more effective this technique will be, so keep that in mind while catching them.
Two things to note:
1) Against Beasts, this will do 60% of your total hp, and the tooltip ingame will change to reflect that. I don't know if the damage is increased by damage-increasing abilities, or if it is locked at 40/60%.
2) THIS CAN MISS! I know it seems obvious, but I learnt the hard way when I was versing a Grand Master trainer.
If you use this ability successfully against the last pet of the opposing team in a wild pet battle, you
can avoid swapping your low-level pets in for one round
(and the associated risks!).
Your two back line pets will share the XP between them.
bugged with the release of patch 5.2
only 40% of total hp against beasts
Good thing those rare wild battle pets won't use this.
I've had too many
with Self Destruct.
So I'm out in the Valley of Four Winds levelling my Level 21 Minfernal. Things are going well and he's only a bar-and-a-half from hitting 22 when I notice this shiny red button. "Hmmm. I wonder what this does?"
Suffice it to say this ability is best avoided unless:
1. Lil' Mr. Fernal is already maxxed out and no longer needs the XP.
2. You feel that taking out the opposing pet in a spectacular fashion is worth the sacrifice at that moment.
One thing to note this can be used with the move sunlight to increase damage done by it
Just had a almost dead Health/Health Netherspace Abyssal that was buffed with Ancient Blessing(5max health per level) and Sunlight (50% health) Explode and nearly wipe out my tank.
Can Explode critically strike? .-.
The damage from this ability isn't modified by any damage reduction buffs,
the passive one
all the Beasts of Fable have
Beat them down with your mechanical pet's other abilities, and right before it's about to snuff it, you use this. The other pet attacks, your pet comes back from the grave and blows the fabled beast into it's next life.
I've noticed something INCREDIBLY important about this ability. I've been using my bombling's against the legendary pets(beasts of fable) and I noticed that this ability actually totally ignores their buff that reduces all damage by 50%. This makes it incredibly strong vs them since you can still use it after failsafes activate to get in a few extra hits then strike back with awesome might. Just make sure you have another pet to clean up after!
This would be great for an Undead pet to use during its extra turn after it dies... too bad there aren't any Undead pets with that ability.
Top 5 pets by the max HP with an
ability as of 6.2.3:(Ties are sorted by the attack power where possible.)
If you have issues with catching a suicidal wild pet, and you found that perfect blue with "Explode" ability - wave that white flag and start combat again, there's a chance that the nuisance will come back with a different top skill, allowing you to save a few broken keyboards.
