The chest is locked, but there are numerous candle stubs on either side of it. My guess is that if all the candles are lit simultaneously the chest will open. The candles extinguish very quickly, so it may require 2 or more players to do it.

EDIT: It can be done solo, you just need to use a speed buff and be very fast. The candles extinguish after 15 seconds, so all must be lit and the chest clicked before the first one goes out.

Loot reward is Oop'lajax battle pet.

Located in the Ringing Deeps, south of the entrance to Darkflame Cleft dungeon, near the Speaking to the Speakers quest area for "Vantage point scouted."

I found that ALL of the candles do not need to be lit at the same time but I did light all of them at least ONCE!

1. Head to an area East of the main town in The Ringing Deeps, between Lost Mines and Shadowvein Extraction Site.
2. Find Scary Dark Chest against a wall with some candles surrounding it.
3. Loot the chest and get Oop'lajax.
*Note: You can interact with the candles but so far nobody has stated being required to use them in order to loot chest.

Note: I completed this on one character, and the next character I didn't have to light any candles up.

Edit: Must've been buggy. Another character had to light all the candles.

Couldnt open the chest, no matter all candels lit or not.
Campaign was done and no open quest in that area.

You just have to be quick but it works. Just light all the candles then the chest will change state and become openable no matter if the candles are lit still.

i had never lit candles previously....ever.....on two toons. but, today i had to actually work and light each candle. then it unlocked. something changed in the past 8 days for me.

I did this on my main, but trying again on my alt, it doesn't open, no matter if you light all the candles.

Just going to conclude this is still bugged. Numerous times have had all candles lit. Read every comment here, tried every thing, even had people nearby who could light a few candles too to make it easier. Just does not work.

I'm going to try again after a server reset or something, I'm guessing it can just get bricked and only works some of the time.

Edit: 10/16/2024 I did end up getting this done, probably a few days after posting my original comment. I just kept trying it whenever I happened to fly by. Eventually one time it just works. I refuse to believe this had anything to do with me doing it faster or having a different prerequisite quest done or that I was missing a candle. I think it was just buggy. If people are still having issues, I would not be surprised to hear it is still bugged. Just try another time, don't beat your head against it. The timer is not that strict when it does work.

Tip to do it solo, w/o any speed buff: start with the big candles further away from the chest then switch to the big ones on the other side, and light at end the small ones near chest. The big candles seems to last a bit longer than small ones.

I managed this on my Shaman as Ghost form.
Opened the chest and looted the pet.
Then I saw that I already owned the pet.... I'm sure I never did this scary chest before.
I can't remember looting this pet before either, but it might be possible; I have zillions of pets.
Anyone knows an alternate source?

I spent a bit of time working on getting this chest to unlock, and found that no one even touched on how to actually open it. So here is what I did.

Yes, you have to light the candles but before that you have to finish the quest Janky Candles which is a long chain of quests for Kobold Culture and Integration. Once that was completed I was able to purchase from Jenky one Janky's Finest. Once out at the chest I used the candle which gives you a 10 minute buff Jankey's Finest, then I lit all the candles surrounding the chest and it unlocked!

I've lit them all up both solo and with a friend, chest remains locked. Even looked at videos opening it, I don't get it.

Just kept trying lighting all the candles, after a few repeats the chest opened with only a few candles lit.

Okay so I came back to WoW today after a break from just before TWW. Lvl 77 druid, got this chest open today on first attempt.

I came here and read about what to do, so to prepare I popped into cat form using dash, but it didn't really make much difference. I went from the very right hand side, lit all candles towards the chest, then same again from the left.

Was a bit puzzled because it hadn't unlocked, then realised there is a single candle in the centre in front of the chest. Hit that one, got the chest open and got the pet. It felt like i had plenty of time, I needn't have bothered with dash, because I walked backwards lighting candles at one point and then sat for a moment contemplating the lockedness.

I don't know if there have been any changes to it recently, but personally I didn't think it was that difficult. If you have lit all candles, including the odd central one, and it's still not unlocking, I would agree with the people saying it's bugged. But make sure you get that middle candle! It's easily missed!

It might also require 加恩基的顶级蜡烛, as xLiyra suggested, but I had to light all of the nearby candles to unlock the chest. As others said: move swiftly!

Opening this chest is quite simple despite the lot of confusion around it. There are a total of 10 candles around it which you have to kindle. Larger candles burn longer so you have to start with them. Best way is to light them up from left to right and when the large ones are lit quickly light up the last two small. I opened the chest with three characters with this method so it's quite guaranteed to work.

I started at the left end and just lit them from one end to the other.

Worked fine. Did not have to complete any questline first.

Worked for me, nighswan! No buffs, just ran round each candle and lit it, then hit the chest, opened!

All candles must be lit in quick succession, I main a enhancement shaman and with Ghost Wolf solo'd this first try. Start with the candles to the left and work your way to the right ending with the candle in the front and them click chest. You do need to be quick with your cursor on this one as well.

If you happen to be a druid, flight form is your friend for this. Super easy and plenty of time to get all candles lit and chest opened.

I just did this without any buffs.
Start at one end, and have a planned path that ends at the chest.
Small candles last.
It can be done within 15secs without buffs.

if it's not opening after lighting all candles, try to turn on war mode and do it; worked for me

I tried to open it in several ways and was unsuccessful.
I tried relogging, reloading, turning off all addons and none of it worked. I tried several different orders to light the candles and it didn't work.
What worked: Turn on War Mode! As soon as I did that, I opened the chest on the first try.

If you have a speed spell or speed buff you can complete this without completing any certain quest or anything. I am currently working on the quests other comments have spoken about but I am a warlock and just used burning rush and started on the left side of the chest and quickly clicked, you don't have to stop when running past them. Started with the far left side two candles, moved to the front one then went to the right side and then the ones behind the chest.

No quests or special buffs are necessary. Did it easily with second attempt. Just start from one end and go to the other clicking on candles and chest will open.
PS. You not need to stand close to the candle to light it.
