Skitterflame is one of the ten "hunter challenges" brought into the game in the Firelands patch. He is the "red fire spider" and we all know red is the best. ;)
He resides in Fireplume Peak chillin' (or is it burnin'?) in one of the lava pools.
For those who want to know his "challenge" be spoiled below.
Skitterflame's challenge is a simple one, he begins the fight with 100 energy which prevents him from being tamed as long as he more then 20 energy. To reduce his energy you must use Freezing Trap which will freeze him like normal and give a second debuff that reduces his energy per second. The trap will break once the second debuff ends giving him free time to wail on you while your cooldown comes up. He can be dazed and kited though making him one of the easier of the challenges to tame
Two notes: You should watch his energy bar carefully, if it reachs 0 he will die and if he runs through lava his energy will instantly refill to 100.
NPCscan ID: 54324
Found south west side of Fireplume Peak wading in a small lava pool. This means to get to him you either have to have the Druids of the Talon quest
or just run* through the fire ramp to get to Fireplume Peak
His spawner is not that long (generic 6-17hr spawner) and he does not share a spawner with any other spider. None of the FL spiders share a spawner.
Like all FL rare spiders this is a hunter only pet. If killed all you will get is crystalline tear of loyalty & shame.
Skitterflame is a red lava spider with a large hit box so tread carefully near him.
Skitterflame has a buff to begin with called Superheated. This buff means he is too hawt for you and he will not let you tame him.
His other buff is called 'Burning Frenzy' which is not as intense as it sounds. What this buff does is increases his damage based on current energy, as his energy is sapped very very quickly this isn't such a biggy.
Like Solix, Skitterflame has an energy bar. Regardless of his HP when his energy runs out he dies. Skitterflame's energy bar drops fast, faster than Solix's, so please always be aware as he is killed by mistake so often because of the loss of his energy.Drag him through lava to reset his energy bar back to 100.
The aim of this game is to chill him out so you can tame him. In order to do this you need to use your frost traps. Frost traps give him a debuff called "Cooling Down" which eventually leads to him dropping his anti-tame buff, however "cooling down" is what drains his energy. The moment his buff is gone start the tame and popping a haste pot isn't a bad idea because if he has the debuff while you tame his energy still drops fast so you want to make sure your tame finishes before his energy reaches 0. Cooling down looks like a big puff of steam and it steams because he is so hot he just melted your trap into steam.
SOLO TAME FOR NON SV HUNTERS
Important things to know first:
He is so hot he will melt your trap fast, this means that you will need to distract him in between one or two traps.
Scare beast or
scatter shot or concussion kiting will help you until your trap is off CD.
You will need to break your last trap. Two traps is too little to get him to drop his buff but three traps is too much and it will kill him. Keeping in mind he melts traps fast that means he needs to be in that last trap for a nano second before you need to break him out of it.
**it's been reported below that 2 was too much, you need to trap to cool down so keep an eye on the anti-tame buff dropping, if he is in his 1 or 2 trap and it drops break the trap and tame ASAP**
Use your haste pots & buff food just in case you left him in that last trap too long.
If you stuff up and almost kill him drag him through lava and his energy goes back to 100, better to start again then kill him and get a tear .
Clear a spot before you start as there are plenty of elementals around.
Freezing Trap wait for CD to be almost over > pull into trap > lay new freezing trap > > >
**it's at this stage you'll need to either concussion kite or scatter shoot
him till your trap is free**
> lay trap >
SOLO TAME FOR SV HUNTERS
1. Wyvern Sting
2. He drops buff while sleeping.
3. Tame while sleeping
4. Laugh at the simplicity of it all.
BTW it's OK if this one man handles you because he doesn't hit hard, and you can survive the hits.... unless you're like a ironman then you might be going #%^#%$&#%$&* but if you are an ironman kudos for going into the molten front in the first place.
Best of luck hunters & don't forget to upload your screenies :D
(edited because things just got srs bsns with this guy....
*breaks into song* That's just the way it is, Things'll never be the sameeeeeee, That's just the way it is, aww yeah......
I tamed this guy early this morning after being one of the first hunters out to the Molten Front. Figuring that he was easier to tame that Kirix, I decided to give it a shot. After a couple of wipes, I finally figured out a strat that worked well.
He was sitting in a pool of lava. I stood on a platform above him and dropped a freezing trap (I'm SV spec). I then waited for my freezing trap to come off cd. As soon as it did I tagged him. He came rushing up the wall and straight into my trap. As soon as he was trapped, I dropped another freezing trap, being sure to keep an eye on his Too Hot to Tame buff. After the second freezing trap he was roughly at 30% energy. I kited him along the path until I could drop a third and final freezing trap. He was only in it for a few seconds when the buff dropped. I made sure to break the trap so that this guy didn't go belly up (he'll die if his energy reaches zero). As soon as the trap broke I started the tame. He bashed on me the entire time, but by then his energy was so low that his hits weren't that hard.
Server first tame on Drenden! Only moments before I also tamed Skarr, and Ban'thalos and Magria I got earlier in the day.
Just tamed this awesome red fire spider on Shadowsong Alliance US server, 29 June 2011 3pm server.
He sits in a lava pool on the west side of Fireplume Peak (19.5, 47.5). *warning* clear out obsidian punishers beforehand so you have room to kite a bit.
By far the easiest one to tame, having MM with readiness helps. Lay down a trap and pull him. Back off, (before the pull, clear out the obsidian punishers to facilitate this) and when he breaks hit him with concussive shot and back off. Throw down your new freezing trap and his meter will be around 40 or so when he breaks out of this one, hit readiness and place a new freezing trap down and tame immediately (if his energy reaches 0, he dies but your cast will go off before that happens if you don't wait too long).
Good luck! The best of the spiders I think.
The NPC Skitterflame (rare) is located in the Molten Front. At Fireplume Peak (20,46).
It has a buff (Burning Frenzy). Increases creature damage based on the amount of energy it has. When it reaches 0 energy, it dies.
It's a rare Hunter pet. You need to let it move over icetraps to cool it down. At 20 energy it is tameable.
I just tamed him around 8:00pm on Suramar. (only took 1 try)
what works best: 2 freezing traps and 1 ice trap
As far as I know he shares a spawn timer with Solix, because I tamed Solix 5 minutes later. (3 tries)
So depressing but.. he was killed about 12:00 AM (give-or-take) Malfurion-US server. Was helping out another hunter to try and tame it, but another hunter came up and put down a freezing trap for too long. :( It's such a terrible feeling, watching a rare pet die. Hunter I was helping, hope you get him soon. I'll assist you again if he shows up.
I just tamed him about 12:48 Thunderhorn Servertime.
He was waaaaaay to easy. i just jumped to the top of the peak there and he was in the lava pool, i just hit tame. nothin special. Deth'tilac was much harder, took me a good 20 minutes to tame that one, and i saw the green one get tamed just before i found Skitter. So within 3 hours i saw 3 of the new rares
Where, When etc -
I got him at 21:39 Server time on Dreanor - EU at the Coords of 20, 48 (Litterly In the lava pool, with his head poking out) I actually came across him by accident, when looking for the Metal Cat I want so badly, Skarr. I was looking for more places Skarr could potentially spawn (Floating rocks around the edge of Fireplume Peak) and saw him.
How I tamed -
Really simple, I used Conculsive Shot to get him to come out of the pool, then I placed a Freezing Trap infront of me, moved back and used Wyvern Sting on him, I tamed him before the sting even wore off, very easy.
Hope this helped someone! (:
But why is 3 of the spiders...skinned as normals? no big achievement to catch em when someone can go and snatch the easy ones and just say "i tamed a rare" cant see any difference anyways.... really annoying
I tamed him this morning at 2:40am on Rivendare realm 7-8-11. This pet was the easiest that I've come across so far. He's cunning just like any other spider with regular spider abilities. Just super cool looking. Got him on the second try.
Things you MUST know:
It kills you with 1 hit
It also cannot be tamed until its energy is really low.
Like mentioned before me, freezing trap is a good way to get rid of its energy because he uses his energy to break out of the freeze trap. Might have to circulate but its worth it.
I threw down a trap, and once it was almost done I kept spamming "fear beast" until my CD for the trap was done, then i'd throw down another trap, rinse and repeat. when its energy level reached about 25 i feared him (and oddly the fear did not break when i was taming it) but id have a freezing trap layed down just in case. be sure to clear out a path so that you don't attract any mobs in the process and keep a good distance between you two. I'm not sure about lava regenerating its energy, but to be safe..keep it away from lava:D
this is my first time posting here, hope it helps! good luck!
I found this unit at 19, 49 in a small lava pool past the Druid of Talon quest givers, beyond the rocks you must jump, and just past the first lava vent.
- I helped a hunter after I found this NPC, where the hunter put down freezing traps to slow / cool down the elite. To help with this, I used crippling poison on my blades as a rogue, used shiv to apply the stack, and only used cheap shot / kidney shot to keep the spider in the traps.
Around 20 energy, the spider will become tameable and you should not have him in anymore traps.
Super easy - Hit him with wyvern Sting, then tame him. You don't even have to be on the ledge with him, I tamed him from the down hill side of the slope.
Worked like a charm!
Good hunting all.
Did this tame just using scare beast and putting down a freezing trap, by the time the scare beast had worn off he was tamed never touched the freezing trap.
Does taming Skitterflame produce the same pet as taming a simple Cinderweb Spinner?
you do not need to make his energy drop or wait for his buff to go away, im not sure if this is a glitch but all you have to do is use scare beast and then start taming and hell be yours. I have tested this twice and it has worked both times
Dont always follow what others post. this is very basic to tame.Forget what everyone else says and all u have to do is SCARE BEAST then TAME asap..GG. hope this helps
Do you have to do anything to get to the said area where Skitterflame is?
Was just in the process (now) of taming this on Dunemaul when Horde hunter named Gurnz turned up and attacked mid tame repeatedly with a group of friends until rez timer was such that he ran off with pet taming it whilst I was waiting on timer. PvP yes... but honor among the hunter community during tames might be a nice thing too. Unfortunately this guy has none.
Easy tame. 2 Freezing Trap is all you need to knock is energy down low enough to tame him. If you have a MM spec with Readiness use it.
Lay first trap and tag, pop readiness, and lay down the next trap so as soon as he breaks he will freeze again.
Once he's energy is low enough, scarebeast and tame.
Biggest annoyance is people break the traps, but yeh, if you really just want the skin, tame the normal Spiders in the Widows Clutch. Other than that, a nice challenge - well no not really, lol, since all you have to do is lay down freezing traps.
I got Skitterflame today. I got a Druid to get him to sleep and the I tame him.
easiest tame. freeze trap and ur good
i wonder why people need mages or druid...or even more than 9 seconds to tame him
-click on him
-search in your speelbook, if you haven't bind on the bars, the skill called "scare beast"
-tame him and congratulations!
So as I was Doing my Dailies in Molten Front at 9:15am on Uther, I came across a not so little Red spider, SkitterFlame!, All tucked in nice and cozy like in his Pool of lava. Now being a thoughtful Hunter and this being my first encounter with SkitterFlame, I didn't want to risk killing him so I alerted other fellow hunters of his pressence to see what they would do and how they failed in there attempts before i made mine.
A Hunter, Huntress arrived and thanked me for alerting her, she also mentioned that this was just an alt she was playing on and not familiar with any of the new rare pets in Molten Front. Knowing first hand on how hard it is to tame Kirix, Solix and Deth'tilac with out knowing their mechanics I figured Skitter would be the same way, and as this huntress was somewhat of a noob I just sat back to enjoy the show and pick up on what works and what didn't. " This outta be good!" I Thought!
What Happened Next just took my breath away, I couldn't believe it if I didn't see it with my own Eyes, One shot! and then he was tamed... on the First attempt! WTF! it was over in the amount of time that it takes to tame. To say the least, well thats just it, I was speechless. I was expecting a fight, a scuffle or something. SkitterFlame didn't even come out ot play. What did she do? I asked. Wyrven Sting. Simple, One shot of that, put him to sleep and tame.
Could it really be that Easy? I had to Find out, So I camped, and camped, 9:15pm Uther, Skitter respawns in his little comfy pool, so spec'd over to survival, shot him with Wyrven sting and begun my tame. OMG! The Easiest Tame of the bunch. Four Spiders Down One more to go, Anthriss your Next!
Just got Skitterflame tonight on Wyrmrest Accord at 10:40 p.m. :D The overall tame isn't that difficult once you get the hang of it. The trick is to clear a small path on the shelf Skitter is sitting on so you have room, then I alternated frost trap with concussive shot. I did not dps him while he was in the trap and just let him sit and cool down. Only two traps were enough to get him cool enough, but if he touches you, two good chomps from him and you're history!
The most difficult part was honestly other players interfering. I think some thought they were helping, but they would break the ice trap or stun him or just try and kill him outright, which lead to several deaths on my part. Fortunately, I had a friendly guildie frost mage help out by freezing him in place after my first trap broke while my CD reset, and chase off any stray rock elementals that had respawned.
After two traps, I had him cooled down and started taming, when a Draenai hunter showed up and tried to steal the tame from me. :< He almost succeeded, but at the last moment I got aggro back and managed to finish the tame seconds before I died. ^_^ I was worried I hadn't made it at first, but now I'm the proud momma of a snazzy flame spider!
I was in the process of pulling skitterflame off of a stupid priest to help another hunter. Skitterflame killed him so I was going to pull him and trap him till he got back, but the priest killed the spider. It is so frustrating when all they drop is a tear. DO NOT KILL THE SPIDERS PLEASE! You are only pissing us off.
As a Hunter I thought this was a bit of a lame rare manly becuase he shares the same skin as a bunch of easy to tame normal red flame spiders. So I decided to kill him with my pally. Yea that didn't happen.
Just tried taming this spider, the mobs all around, the earth elementals, the firehawks, were a major pain in the ass.
Even if you clear the area before you try the tame - by which another hunter will try it and not thank you for doing the annoying work - by the time you have kited him halfway around most of the mobs will have respawned.
In addition over the few minutes I tried taming the guy a hunter and a shaman appeared. At first I thought the shaman wanted to help the hunter tame it - in the end they killed it! A effing hunter killed this spider, after they saw me try the taming process at least once. What a bunch of &*!@#$s.
If you notice the only item they drop is called
Crystalline Tear of Loyalty
, and the description of that item says "The desire to serve as a loyal companion coalesced into a single priceless crystals" and that is the way of Blizzard to say you shouldn't be killing these spawns but instead hunters should tame them (notice the part of : The desire to serve as a loyal companion = A hunter pet)
So yh if a wasnt the first one to notice this sry then i didnt read trough 51 comments ( or something like that) to know if i am stealing someones post or not, but i reached to this conclusion myself so just wanted to put that out there.
PS: There are
10 rare spawns
that came in , in patch 4.2.
Just get your friendly neighbourhood warlock to keep him feared while you tame. Piece'o'piss.
just tamed him a few minutes ago, another hunter helped me since she didn't want him cause of the hunter pact(help a fellow hunter out) and also the non rares look different then the rares, but not by much
Going to share my story here. I haven't really been after any of these challenge tames because the competition is ridiculous and it's just not that srs to me to have these pets asap, I don't mind getting them after everyone else has got them XD But anyway, I ran into this guy doing dailies and watched a horde druid pull him, a hawk and the fun little rock guys in front of me, (maybe to try to kill him so I couldn't get the tame, I dunno) and them promptly die. I hadn't really read up on him so I herp derped pull him and kill myself. Tried a freezing trap, still killed me. I finally started reading and tried again, was doing pretty good and then an orc DK killed him….though I'm not entirely sure he was doing it out of maliciousness, I think he thought he might of been trying to help me because I had tagged him and was in the middle of kiting him, so it may have looked like I was just killing him…I dunno for some reason I get the feeling he wasn't doing it on purpose. If he was then he's just another &*!@#$ player which are no longer a surprise.
They just need to make all the new challenge tames have Unique skins, Ivv done em all (no life) but to make it worth while they should
If you cannot tame this spider within 20 seconds of seeing him...you don't deserve him.
Simply use "Scare Beast" and immediately start to tame. It's that simple. And it should be simple since there is absolutely NOTHING special or unique about this spider. Even the so-called challenge of taming this spider doesn't make it special.
Tamed at 10:10am on Akama (8/8/11)... he spawned at 10:05am, but I sucked at taming him and it took me like 3 attempts as BM.
Got my haste buff from the thermal vent on the rock ridge to the left, cleared a path for myself on the edge of the Peak, and started kiting and trapping him. On attempt 2, I would have had him, but he evaded because I waited a little to long to shoot him again. Attempt 3 I was really sloppy with kiting him... for some reason thinking his freeze debuff would remove serpent sting (totally didn't... it broke my trap and i had to back-peddle quick). A feral druid was watching me and threw a rejuvenate on me to help out a bit as my health was starting to get low from getting in melee range of Skitter. He got down to 17 energy and I began the tame using my
/cast Tame Beast
macro. I think the thermal buff makes it look like your tame is casting at normal speed, but then suddenly it will end about halfway through and be finished. I don't know if this was intended, but that's what happened for me. I got the jitters with this one lol.
Still waiting for Skarr to show up!
Best of luck!
got him at 230 am server time hydraxis all i did was scare beast and tame easy tame didnt lose any health
Skitterflame has the exact same model as the non-rare Red Spiders over at the "clutch" by the Forlorn Spire area.
Just like Anthriss has the exact same model as the Yellow Spiders in the same area.
In fact, the only difference between the "Rares" and the "Normals" is their NPC scan ID#.
So don't kill yourself trying to get either of them - there is no Achievement for taming them and nobody will ever know (or care) that you didn't actually tame the rare one if you gave it the same name.
Deth'ilac, Solix and Kirix are the only unique tamable spider models from the new patch.
Skitterflame and Anthriss use recycled models.
when I read all posts by You :) i feel so lame :) I had no idea that the spider is there to be tamed only. I spotted him yesterday. I said to myself: "wow, a rare@85, must be some good gear dropping".
I died twice, he hit me like 85k, my tank-a-gorilla died after w few secs. 3rd try was a success, but so disappointing ... only a gray item? wtf?
Well, the item's description + item's name say it all.
Ty for letting me know that this spider is a non-exotic one, next time we be friends :)
You can easily do this without help from others, if you as Survival get him in a Freezing Trap (when he is outside the lava pool of course) and then use Wyvern Sting on him right when he comes out of the trap. When he is sleeping you can tame him. Fast and easy :)
Just got this fella today, using scare beast/trap technique as mentioned above.
Same skin as the other spiders, but I know he's "special" :-)
Just tamed him on us Malygos. The tip with using roots from druid was awesome! his stun interupting the tame was annoying. He goes great with death'tilac and kirix which i tamed yesterday. Along with Skarr this morning
easiest tame ever
Tamed EU-Stormreaver 6:31 AM.
Was a very easy tame, trap, shoot him with conc to it, wait for trap cooldown, re-trap, scare beast, tame.
Aggroed two elementals during this, they proved to be of no danger.
Was waiting on Skarr, and he popped up. Was an easy tame. Freeze trap/frost trap, got him down to 4 energy, nearly killed him. :P
Yeah easy, just needs 2 freeze traps, best if you are a MM hunter that way you don't have to wait just use Readiness.
Once hes down to 35 energy or below, Scare Beast on him and immediately tame and its done.
No need for haste buffs. Infact none of the pets in Molten Front really need haste they all have a unique way of being tamed.
By far one of the most easiest to tame, all you do is put freezing trap into the lava pool where he is standing then fear beast then tame. You can do it at any percent for his energy.
Freeze trap in front of the lava pool, shoot him to get trapped in it. Scare beast, tame :)
but you might as well get one on the other side, same skin :p
I tamed this yesterday on Bleeding Hollow US and here are a few of the things that I put to use.
1. My hunter had not finished either of the 150 mark quest so I had to run, die, rez, run to get to the area where the spider is.
2. You can do this as any spec but I would recomend marks for readiness to reset your cooldowns.
3. I had a druid run by that offered to help, he rooted the spider when I set one of my traps too soon (200g tip for that part).
4. You need to get his energy below 50 at least, I died twice to setting traps at the wrong time in my BM spec then switch to marks so I could make sure I had a trap ready if needed.
I now have two of the spiders ( I got Solix over the weekend) and the bird from the new hunter challenges. I like that you have to do something other than freeze trap and cast tame.
Menina, night elf huntard, Bleeding Hollow US.
My (Horde) Orc hunter has been looking for this spider, among others for the last couple of weeks...
Spotted on Silvermoon-US 8/24/11 @ 10:00AM Server.
Tagged him and trapped him, scattershot, CS, trapped again...
Horde warrior (Flaskbar/Sacrificial Vengeance) who had been watching starts wailing on him which breaks him out of the trap, then his guildie the hunter (Tookar/Sacrificial Vengeance) shows up and kills him.
I spoke with the hunter afterwards and he claimed not to have known what was going on, or that I was in the middle of a tame. He said that his buddy called him over to help kill a rarespawn and didn't realize I had tagged him. Clearly bull&*!@ imo, I know they call us huntards but we are not that clueless.
Keep your eyes open around these scandalous fools, they will kill your rarespawn out of spite if they didn't tag it first.
Just a warning If your on Dragonblight I will no longer watch you tame if you were there first "allies" I always have been polite before. I move along If your camped and give you room when I find you in a tame. NO longer will I show you respect and take Crud in return.
I have had every new pet that I have gone after Ninja'd or stolen by low class Allie huntards, I will now kill your tame and even camp you so that I can kill your tame, "once my fault twice yours 3 times is bloody war". I don't Care if your a lvl 10 taming a Tall Strider I am going to kill it just for spite. I have had enough....
had this Spider, until some Blood Elf Paladin decided to get in the way and kill him. I told him to go away but he didn't listen. He's lucky I didn't get on my Horde character and scream at him.
mage just robbed me of this tame.... and funny enouph he made solix die by makeing him running out of energy while i was tameing him.... awsome
After a few attempts of getting charged and getting one shotted. I realized about the refresh CD in Marksman all I did was throw down freeze trap on em pop Readiness get close lay down another trap and as soon as I recovered from laying down the trap I immediately started taming and it worked! he breaks out of first trap then gets caught in second trap as your taming BAM ez mode!
I just tamed him on Coilfang this morning at 9:30 server time. Laid down a freezing trap and just before it came off of CD, I shot him. (don't forget to hit esc to stop attack). Once freezing trap broke, I put down another. When that one broke, I hit him with scattershot, then scare beast, and started tame. He ran out of range once, but I just ran back in range and hit tame again. I took no damage and added him to my collection. I know he's not a unique skin, but it's the challenge! I now have all the molten front pets except Deth'tilac, and I hear he's the hardest! I don't care if normal spiders look the same. It's nice knowing that you get rewarded with a rare pet for putting in some extra effort! I even whisper to other hunters if I see one I already tamed, and give advice, if asked. Not all hunters are @$$holes. By the way, I'm Escapedfelon on Coilfang if anyone needs help/advice with any of these rares. Happy Hunting! ;o)
Simply fear him (have a freezing trap in front of you for emergencies). As soon as the fear starts, start the tame. All done. Just got him not five minutes ago.Now I resume my vigil for Skarr.
Skitterflame was one of the easiest "hunter challenges" for me,
I saw him, and tamed him first try (took like 20 seconds) while wearing PvP gear (138K hp) and no haste buffs, I aggroed 2 of these rock guys when I started taming, still, those attacks just tickled me.
what you need to do first is changing to Marksmanship to make it a clean and fast tame.
simply do the following:
1. Aggro with
. (if the spider is out LoS, another platform for example)
2. Lay down your first
, wait till it breaks and this should bring his rage/energy to 50/60%.
4. Lay down another
, wait a few seconds.
5. Now you should be able to use
, spells like
are optional but not necessary.
Remember, don't hunt for days, hunt for minutes, efficient time management made me owner of the following pets;
Loque'Nahak, Arcturis, Skoll, Sambas, Ghostcrawler, Kirix, Karoma, Skitterflame, ...
Dirtyhunter - Al'Akir
Today at 2:15pm on Shadowsong, this spider spawned and a shaman, Fonowzing, advertised looking for someone to
help him kill it!
I arrived to try and stop him, after pleading with him for a while...
I arrived and Skitterflame was half dead. I asked him to let me tame, and said I would tip 100g. The guy said no, and proceeded to kill it right in front of me.
I had been camping for weeks. This was my first time seeing this spider.
I whispered him, and he still insisted he did nothing wrong.
hunter challenge tames!
That is why they were created! They are only attackable because they have to be to be tamed. They drop crap loot. If you see this, or any other rare, let hunters go for it. You will only earn yourself hatred if you don't.
Fonowzing- if you read this, know this:
You screwed over Sevarle. She will gladly return the favor.
Freezing Trap, Scare Beast when he's free, Freezing Trap again, Scare Beast when he's free again, and start the tame while he's scared.
Easy peasy once you know.
Im kinda' pissed atm, i found him after i came home from work 06:30... found a short "how to" and tried it, wiped three times and the last try i was overcome by a random ally pala who first raped me and as i came back to ress i had ress time. He F**king killed him...... I really do hate those guys..... I really really do....
I hope the !@#$ who just killed him on Dentarg enjoys his vendor trash...
Tamed him with the help of a friendly mage who wandered by.
Quick polymorph from the mage and it was all over.
Couldnt get much easier than doing it that way
rage quit "delete char" 02:40 see it and start to tame " i didnt read what i have to do so i die.
then i try again and use ice trap dete/tame and died, then when i come back random hunter /w and say "you doing it wrong" ok my first time i see this after 8h camping "cat/crap"
and then this hunter start freeze trap it and i notice that energy go down, i try same and fail at second trap and died :|, then i come, take my body and boom this hunter trap kite it all way down to my nose and boom spider is death. then i ask why you kill it? and dude say me " i want show how to do it" and btw i see today that Karkin and middle of tame there comes hero class dk and kill it.
Karkin "fails" dk kill it
Ban`thalos "fails" hunter+lock+spriest kill it, hunter?
sorry my **** english
I tamed him today and compared with other of the "challenges" this shouldn't be even part of the list:
As simple as approaching to him on survival spec., shoot wyvern sting, press tame beast and have it tamed even before I could say "what the heck".
easiest way to tame him is scare beast and tame while he runs
I would just like to say that what Shangorin has posted is good, i tried it just now ( Stormrage- 7-30 AM) and it worked a treat, well posted Shan.
I just tamed him on terenas using scare beast and then tame. Simple as that.
Ugly little critter tho...
I just tamed him about ten minutes ago. All I did was lay down freezing trap and when the cooldown was almost over I aggro'd him. By the time freezing trap was done I laid it down again. Let that cool off then kited him until I was able to lay freezing trap again. By that time he was at 18 hit deterrence and tame.
I had an undead warlock try to kill him while I was taming him but I was able to tame him before he did any real damage. Really easy though. A little fun but if you don't want to waste 2 minutes taming him just head to the other side and there are non elite spiders that look just like him.
I tamed him the other day with the help of my Mage Friend. He put ring of Frost down and after the 3 second delay I started to tame him. He was frozen for the entirety of my Tame Beast Cast
after seeing the cute crab karkin and another hunter and his druid friend dashed my hopes of a successful tame by killing him, i continued my daily quests and noticed the druid friend trying to kill the cute spider, skitterflame, he had him entagled in roots, so i decided to watch and see what happened, the silly druid got himself cornered between skitterflame and some rock elementals, lol, so i grabbed the opportunity and successfully tamed him with no extra effort on my part, so a little something to think about, those of u who r selfish enough to kill these hunters pets, u may find another rare out of ur grasp due to some silly actions of ur own, let us hunters have what is ours, these beautiful creatures offer nothing for those who r not hunters, if u want one of them, create ur own hunter
my tip for skitterflame is to find a druid ally and keep the cute spider entangled in roots, clear the adds so ur druid ally is not in danger, tag him with arcane and u should be fine, this worked sucessfully for me, though the druid was not my ally, lol, good luck and happy hunting to all hunters
What we did was i was a hunter helping a hunter friend. i put a freeze trap very close to him, but not enough to freeze him. my friend put a second down near her and back up a bit. she aggro'd him, he froze by the first trap, and she did cast beast. It finished, spider tamed, easy as pie.
I just tamed skitterflame, easiest way I found was to lay ice trap just outside the lava pool then wait for the cooldown to reach the 3/4 point before hitting him with concussive blow, once he tripped the ice trap i hit him with scare beast then began the tame, first attempt caused him to run out of range, but second attempt was successfull without a hitch.
The most troublesome thing about this tame might be the elementals that spawn around the immediate area. I killed those beforehand, but they began to respawn right around the time I got Skitterflame down to about 35 energy.
The interesting thing I came to report, however, is that
Really Sticky Glue
successfully held him while I tamed. I
I was still carrying that around for something! I was down to about 3k health and threw that out as a last resort, and it gave me sufficient time to tame.
1. Freeze trap on top of him
2. Scare Beast
3. Tame beast
Not sure if they changed anything. It's possible. I don't keep up as well as I should. I used a mighty speed potion, threw a trap down thinking I'd need it. I used wyvern sting on him and started taming. Got him right away.
1. Place a Freezing Trap in front of Skitterflame.
2. Wait until your Cooldown is off (or close) then pull him into the trap.
3. Place a new Freezing Trap in front of him, he will run into this one when the first expires.
4. When the second Freezing Trap runs out, use Scare Beast.
5. Tame while he is feared. (Tried multiple times, 2 traps will allow you to tame him disregarding what his buff say.)
The very few things that may stop you is if he'd outrange the tame somehow (did not seem possible, he ran impressively far away while I channeled my tame.)
With some bad luck he may run into a nearby lava pool, which in turn fills up his focus. I dont know how this would affect a tame already in progress though.
The third is draining all his focus to 0, instantly killing him. This will not happen if you only trap him twice.
Good luck, a truly great pet to have in your collection! :)
Tamed Skitterflame at 19:05 on EU-Drakthul.
Not so easy if you dont know right tactic.
I use freezing trap in front of Skitterflame and wait for CD. Then pull her into it, wait something about 5sec and throw another at her, then use Readiness and throw Ice Trap and start tame. She gets to me but dont have time to hit me.
PS: Sorry for my bad english. Im not native english speaker.
Hello, this is Foxyfairie from Shadowsong and i cant believe it but i just tamed Skitterflame by using scare beast! lol.I cant believe it actually worked but it did.All you do is make sure to kill the few obsidium punishers in the area so they dont aggro on you and scare it then tame! Wish Deth'tilac was that easy! lol.Thank you Aiderjar for the tip :)
So, this is the easiest of all the Challenge tames added in Cata, IMO. What I did was so simple it made me wonder if this was even a worthy creature to tame. He popped for me last night, and all I had to do was
and tame. Nothing fancy, nothing difficult. Just shoot him, and tame him. Pathetically easy.
I just helped a guildie get this pet. All I did was sap him, and the hunter tamed him. Simple as that.
Survival hunters; to make an easy tame simply Wyvern sting and tame. Worked like a charm for me.
Tamed him at 1018 pm Server time on Aggramar today 11-3-11 with no problem. I used Concussive shot on him after placing a Freezing Trap down in between he and I. When he froze my Mage friend PM'd him and I hit tame. Went off with out an issue. Thinking back on it, if you set your trap just right you may be able to get him with out the Mage.
I saw him this morning after i saw a hunter made the tame in front of me yesterday...
He used a nice technique that id like to say behind a spoiler alert box but i dont know how to do that yet...
Today i saw him and (another technique wich will be hidden behind a spoiler alert box) it worked.
Now im going for that cat.
Easiest way possible - hit wyvern sting and tame. That's it
Used on 8th Nov 2011 and worked, even shot him while he was in his lava pool and worked, didn't need to even pull him out of that.
So did it in 2 clicks.
1. Hit wyvern
2. Hit tame.
Just tamed Skitterflame on Quel'thalas EU.
For those of you without Wyvern Sting:
I had help from my hunter friend. I popped down my freezing trap just infront of him and my friend laid his trap a little behind that. I then laid my 3rd trap and started to tame him whilst he was frozen. My friend broke the trap then feigned death to prevent him from dieing from losing all his energy. Very simple and nice looking spider :) GL!
One of the easiest way to tame this @#$%er, which I just did, was Trap him, wait til the trap has approximately 10 seconds left on the CD, pull him into the trap immediately, and back away (making sure to avoid any and all Lava), put down another trap and get behind it, and (I used Readiness and Trapped him at this point to be sure he was low enough on energy) then tame him.
I just tamed Skitterflame. Dropped down behind him when I fell off a ledge. Wasn't looking for him as I'd just gotten Karkin (the silver crab), so called out to other hunters in the area but no one answered. Looked through the messages here to see if there's anything special need doing & was pouting when I saw I'd need help.
I saw a note saying that wyvern sting could work, so I tried it. Shot it from behind, so it didn't even realise I was there, started the tame with the too hot to handle full on :) and I now have Skitterflame!
Miphistophel, L85 BELF SV Hunter on Nagrand.
WOOT! Just killed this beauty with a mage friend of mine! Only dropped some vendor trash but I'm hoping to farm it, maybe a rad boe will drop eventually, eaaaaasy kill, just kite/snare and dps.
I trapped him twice; one after another (Marksmanship helps with
to reset the CD of your trap), of course waiting for him to "
", was a pain because he kept charging me. But reading a bit what others have said, I used Scare Beast, just a second before the second trap broke.
Also had a random person come along and helped me by looking up videos and what not. Thanks again =)
Tamed him on Darkspear EU (23h20 CET)
1. put freezing trap
2. tag (arcane shot)
3. when first trap wears off --> concussive shot + place second trap
4. when he breaks second trap --> scare beast
6. new pet
Tip: i walked backwards in a straight line (at his right). Jumping up the elevated plateau using the thermal wind). There is fewer trash running around. Kill them just before you attemt tame (and don't loot them).
Best of luck!
All i did to tame him was freeze, cs then scare and tame whilst scared, told another hunter to do this way but they didnt believe me at first so i spent half an hour watching him die until i had enough and scared it for him once scared hunter tamed in seconds and didnt die once using the scare method. Why complicate things when you can just scare him.
Tamed @ 3pm EST on Skywall! :)
Just caught him today in hands down the easiest way. I stood on the ledge directly above his lava pit and shot a frozen arrow then tamed him, did not break the trap and tamed him.
I tamed him today with no effort at all. Can't beat having a
in your bag that you saved in case you ever needed it but never thought to use. I targeted Skitterflame in his lava pool, clicked glue, clicked tame, waited for channelling to finish, walked away with a new pet. Frighteningly too easy, so much so that I asked a GM about it. Perfectly valid way to do it, but if you never did the old quest that needed the glue and kept it, you're out of luck as it's no longer available in the game.
I tamed Skitterflame yesterday on my freshly dinged 85 hunter alt.
I died the first time because I used the wrong trap... No comment.
Anyway, here's how I did it: I put down a freezing trap, waited til the CD was halfway through, auto shoot to pull her in it. Then I backed up and put down another trap, let her get frozen again and scatter shot her when her energy went down to 30, then started the tame.
There you go.
In 4.3 it appears Skitterflame has been made immune to Scare Beast.
He is now immune to scare beast, do not follow this advice...you will DIE.
hello, i just tamed this spider.
What i did
put down the ice trap, wait a while, aggro her with concusive shot, she came on trap and then i allready had new cooldown for freezing trap, used it and tamed her easilly
Just tried him, and he's immune (as of what patch, I'm not sure) to Scare Beast as a BM spec'd hunter. Best bet is to Off Spec MM or SV and use the other strategies mentioned here (Wyvern Sting, etc.).
#showtooltip Tame Beast
/Cast Tame Beast
Helped me a lot.
Does anyone have any accurate pointers on how to tame this guy? As of now he is immune to scare beast and he does a constant knock back that interrupts the tame.
Echoing a comment that Scare Beast no longer works on Skitterflame.
After 5 tries here is the easiest strategy (patch 4.3):
1. Clear area of mobs. Be quick about it, they have fast respawn rate.
2. Dismiss pet.
3. Lay freezing trap.
4. Wait for trap CD.
6. As soon as he falls into your trap, move a bit further and lay another freezing trap.
7. When he falls into your second trap, get even more far away from him and have concussive shot ready. If you have somehow lost more than 20k hp in the process, better to drink a pot or bandage just to be sure. If you're a herbie, lifeblood would be best due to the additional haste buff.
8. Concussive shot him when the previous trap wears off (or a second earlier if you wish) and lay another as soon as it's off CD.
9. When he falls into your third trap, slowly back up (careful for mobs) and when his buff wears off pull with arcane shot (or your shot of choice) and start tame beast.
You have to be fairly quick on this pull because he won't have much energy left from the previous traps and he'll die if you're not careful.
9. Enjoy your new red pet!
This is how I tamed him today. Just like my first freezing trap tame, more or less.
Get up above him, no stray mobs there.
Walk up to the edge of the cliff directly above him.
Lay a freezing trap.
Backup until you have your back to the wall behind you, with your trap between you and Skitterflame.
Cast tame beast.
He came up the cliff into the trap and was tamed before the trap broke.
Is there an easier way?
By far the biggest challenge of this mob is clearing out all the super-fast-respawning trash around him after every attempt :(
i tryed freezing trap then tame like was sujested by beeing above skitterflame, and tame breaks the trap :S, and it killed me on return to my body, some Asshat, killed skitterflame thats 2 rares that have been stolen from me today by greedy people one un happy hunter, there really are some jackass's on Killrogg EU
Guys i found a super easy solution to tame this spider, and it doesnt need to have under 50 energy to tame it can have 100.. So you have to be MM spec
1. Set down Freezing Trap
2. Silence shot to Lure to trap
3. Potion of speed
simple, it wont charge @ you because your silenced and it works with 100 energy.
I cant seem to tame him since he keeps knocking me back. Even when his energy reaches 20 he still keeps knocking me making me unable to tame.
just found him and Kirix right next to eachother. crazy-ass spiders for sure
Just got him so here's what I did put a ice block trap in between us silence shot then tame he was mine before he even got out of the iceblock.
lol impossible to tame the skitterflame in 4.3.2 patch immune freezing trap, wyvern sting, conclussive shot so when channeling is at half the rare pet make dmg on me(pet can kill me one shot) and the channeling interrupt and I die.
So make any ideas to catch it,I realy want for this and I think not just me^^:D
If you have a druid friend its even easier. Have the druid entangleroot him and tame. Have fun with your knew friend.
Well, I see him right in front of me but have no way of taming him now. No druid to help me. Thanks Bliz. What a beautiful untamable pet.
Still working as for 4.3.2
You can use the vents, they will speed up ur running for good amound, to escape the spider untill your freezing trap CD is over again.
How i did it:
1. Put down ur freezing trap - NOT FROST TRAP
he will get in ice for the spell time.Dont run or shoot, before he gets loose.
2. now time to run and shoot him. jump on the vents, be sure the clear the area of stone elementals... keep running until freezing trap CD is over, and right in front of you, put it down, but dont run too far away from his spot, just around it. or else he resets.
3. wait until he is down to 25 energy.
4.TAME and done
Just so everybody knows: Skitterflame is immune to wyvern sting, scare beast etc. Concussive shot and ice trap+scatter shot is the way to go!
Tamed about 15 mins ago, trapped him until he was low energy, put my back to a wall, popped a pot ,and tamed away, got me to about half health.
So while I can understand for some people the challenge of obtaining this pet is the allure, if you simply want the skin, go after the
Tried to tame this spider (ver 4.3.2) based on posts here.
Two things that definitely DO NOT WORK anymore are Wyvern Sting and Scare Beast.
Skitters is IMMUNE to both. (Didn't have a mage handy to test the polymorph idea).
This was too easy, but made to appear difficult! All you have to do is drop a freezing trap outside his lava pool (DO NOT PULL YET, WAIT UNTIL YOUR TRAP CD IS ALMOST UP BEFORE PULLING) then drop another under him just before he goes lose from the 1st trap. Then, once the 2nd trap is off kite him just a little bit with concussive shot ( DO NOT KITE TO FAR BACKWARDS, YOU MAY RESET HIM OR AGGRO OTHER ANNOYING MOBS AROUND YOU). Then drop a snake trap if you want and hit him with scatter shot, by this time you should have your freeze trap cool down up, drop your last freeze trap, then begin to tame, his energy should be very minimal after doing all this, no tame interruptions and thats WIN! Good Luck! and Enjoy your new pet!
You don't need any fancy tricks on taming him, just start taming from the upper platform, have frost trap between you and him and pull with conclussive shot followed by immediate tame beast.
You will be hit once or twice, but that's not enough to kill you.
Where is this?
Skitterflame became immune to Scare Beast and Wyvern Sting. Regardless of this fact everyone seems to still reply "hey just use Wyvern Sting or Scare Beast after he is tamable". It never ceases to dumbfound me that people can read several posts and still not comprehend the actual problem of NOT BEING ABLE TO USE SCARE BEAST OR WYVERN STING ANYMORE.
After an hour of trying combinations and stacking a repair bill I was finally able to tame him.
Do not worry about any haste buffs, if you have them great, if not then oh well.
1. Clear the area
2. Lay down a Freezing Trap and wait 30 seconds for the Freezing Trap to be availible again.
3. Pull Skitterflame into said trap (DO NOT USE SERPENT STING TO PULL).
4. Walk back a few feet and lay the second trap (this is why we waited that 30 seconds to pull).
5. After the second trap breaks simply kite him around with Concussive Shot (this is why we cleared the area).
6. After the Freezing Trap is availible to use again, lay it down and freeze him (this is trap #3 if you have lost count).
7. BREAK THIS TRAP IMMEDIATELY AFTER HE DROPS BELOW 20 ENERGY! (Remember this is the THIRD trap genius, not the first or second one).
8. Tame away. Use deterrance if you want, should not matter if you are at least at 3/4 hp.
It is essential to note that he can not be tamed until he is at 19 energy or below. I know, I know "but Lkurrus he is tamable before then because his untamable buff falls off."
The reason of this particular guide is because of this above fact. He may be tamable, but until he is at or below 19 energy he will continuously us his charge ablility as soon as you begin using your Tame Beast ability. It does not matter if you are using deterrance or not, his charge ability will knock you back and stop the cast.
He will use this ability if you are at max range or even if you are right on top of him. Plus this ability seems to be on a very short cooldown allowing him to continuously use it to stop you from taming him.
Feel free to stack haste buffs if you want and try another way. Several times I attempted using the combination of Ancient Hysteria, pots, and the haste buff acquired from platform jumping up there. No matter what he will use his charge ability before you can finish the cast. Perhaps my hour of trying this was flawed, and in that case you can feel free to rack up your own repair bill to prove me wrong...
BTW I realize that you can just simply bring a druid to root him... this guide is to complete the challange, not cheat it.
I just tamed this guy today at 5pm on Maelstrom. He is very easily solo tamed. What everyone says about the 3 traps really works. And you REALLY need to wait until he is under 20 energy. I wanted until he was to about 15 before breaking him out of the 3rd trap. I used CS and hit the tame. Once he gets really low in energy he moves slower and hits for a heck of a lot less and he won't knock you back to keep you from taming him =)
Just tamed it.
Fount it at
at the lava pool located at 19.5 & 49.0
The main thing here is that Skitterflame is CC'able
1) Cleanup the 2 Obsydium Punnishers (do not bother with fire hawk, as he spawns too fast).
2) Get 1 Freezing Trap close to the spider.
3) Got to max distance and pull it. It hits the freezing trap.
4) Lay a new freezing trap near you. She will come to you and hit it.
5) run through her, and hit once more with Concussive shot once more.
6) This point requires attention: Run back until the place she was originally, but do not pass as you will agro the fire hawk.
6) When she is close to you, use disengage and as you fall, your Freezing Trap should be back up.
7) drop it, and let it hit it.
8) At this point, I just hit deterrence & tame.
Yesterday my blood elf hunter on Argent dawn found him around 22:00 - 23:00 opposite to where Kirix was patrolling at the time. I had tamed Deth'tilac earlier and Skarr being my purpose for the trip I did not even try taming him and at the time other hunters only tried to get Kirix.
Is it coincidence that all three rare spiders were around at the same time? Someone tamed Kirix at the end when I checked about four hours later but not sure about Skitterflame. Oh and Skarr spawned at 03:50 realm time just to let you know.
Please do not kill these rare pets and lend a hand to a hunter trying to tame them. They might even tip you even I was considering that whilst kiting Deth'tilac but few alliances helped out and importantly someone hinted me he spawned so please lend a hand if you can. Good luck all!
I had no idea this was a "Challange Tame" beast today, I just cast ice trap and tame beast and got him, as I would any other beast.
He must be the easiest one.
Just tamed Skitterflame on Garona Server at 11AM Server time. It appears that last night Deth, Anthriss, and Solix were all up. But seeing that I already have them all I was just left with Skitterflame.
When doing my dailies this morning, I saw Kirix, Solix again and my Pally friend saw Skitterflame. So I decided to go ahead and nab my last spider from Firelands. The videos definitely help a lot. I did concusive shot pull with Feezing trap and Ice Trap. My freezing trap missed the target twice so I had to run around a lot. Then finally got it with my Ice trap. I have now completed all 5 spider tame challenges.
On my way up to Skitterflame, a Dranei shaman saw me jumping up on the rocks and whispered me tht Skarr is not here cause she just killed him. I dont know what to say.. umm thanks for letting me know and why the hell does she want to kill it. She also tried killing skitterflame until my pally friend told her that this is a hunter pet. Please dont kill hunter pets. Thank you.
Had a difficult time attempting this, and died a few times. Much to my dismay, upon rezzing a be mage just had fun killing it :(
First i think this pet isn´t easy to tame. :) You have to time it all right to get him.
Because hes immune now to Scare beast and Wyvern sting so its much much harder.
I had to go Marksman to even get a chance to get him. As BM and SV you have CD issues with ice trap. MM got Readiness that clears it. :)
This is how i did it. (
1. Put down
ice trap at the edge of his pool.
2. Wait unitl its like 5secs CD on ice trap.
3. Pull him with an arcane shot.
He will now get stuck in that first trap but your autoshot will release him.
4. Quick put
ice trap down and back so he get trapped.
5. Now use your Readiness
6. Wait until he breaks free the trap and put down the
7. Now watch his energy and when he reaches
break the trap ASAP
8. Hit Deterence
9. Tame Beast.
It takes a while to get this all tougheter buts its rly easy if you just go slow. If he miss a trap just feign and he gets back to his pool and you can easly start over again.
This spider is easy itself. The Obsidium Punishers are the real problem.
Other than the seemingly obnoxious respawns of the Punishers, the most difficult part I had was with pulling him, without my autoattack breaking the ice block. So I did a slightly different method (after clearing the 4 punishers, just in case).
1) use trap launcher to launch freezing trap, with you and the trap on the non-firehawk side of him.
2) wait a little bit, then use trap launcher to launch snake trap so that it was on him (aggroing him). This extra time shortened the effective cooldown on the ice trap.
3) the snakes will break the freezing trap, but he'll be busy attacking them for a few important seconds. When he finishes them off, and turns towards you, drop another freezing trap.
4) When he breaks free of that one, hit readiness and drop one last freezing trap - this should bring him well below the 20 rage mark.
5) simply hit deterrence and tame. Deterrence probably isn't necessary, but after quite a bit of headaches with the Punnishers,auto-attacks breaking the ice block, and many, many deaths - I started at only about 25%-30% health, and still had most of that by the time I was done.
Here is my simple guide to taming every one of the eight hunter challenges. This is all based off my personal experience and what worked for me.
Skitterflame* - Burn
So, for Skitterflame, I actually needed a bit of help. Not because he is exactly hard to tame, but because the easiest way to do it involves walking back and forth along one or two ledges that are covered in quickly re-spawning mobs. To this end, I called in my prot-warrior friend to keep the playing field clear.
Once the adds weren't a problem, the rest was easy. I cannot highly enough recommend being Marksman for this tame, and most of the others, Readiness and the ability to reset your cool-downs is invaluable. Start off to the left of Skitterflame as you face him. Put a trap between you and him ((Freezing trap, not ice trap)) and just backwalk. The trap will last about six seconds ((He is a fire spider. You can't keep him as an ice cube for long.)) Pop readiness, drop your second trap, and continue until 20-30 energy. ((I was able to tame him just fine at 30, which only took three traps))
Solix - Blister
Again, I called in help. Bring in a Deathknight with Chillbanes and this will be a cake walk. Put down a ice trap, and run, fast, have your Deathknight frost fever the mob while you two run around the circle together. Once his energy is low enough ((Again, I was just fine at 30)) pop your deterrence and tame! Tame for your life!
Kirix - Melt
Pretty easy. Just bring a shaman friend, pull him at max distance, use disengage at the peak of your journey through the air, pop deterrence upon landing, have your shammy use heroism, and tame! Keep Aspect of the wild up, and if you have around 120k health, you'll make it through just fine, if you worked quickly enough. (9Your reaction time has to be perfect. Disengage at the peak of it, deterrence right after, and start mashing your tame button as soon as you land))
Anthriss - Boil
One of the easiest pets to tame, there is absolutely no challenge to him. While facing him, look in front of him, and to your right, there will be a BUBBLING pool of lava ((It isn't the closest one to him, it is the one after that. The closest one to him is not properly deep enough)) get as close to it as you can, shoot him in the face, get into the lava so deep you are swimming, pop deterrence, and tame! You won't fall below 70%. ((My one warning is that a magma giant pats around the lava pool you must swim in. Be sure to kill it before hand, or risk unwanted adds.))
Deth'tilac - Grim
The king of the big eight challenges. The single cause of the most rage for hunters trying to work their way through this list. Honestly, this is how I did it, and a few things that do, and do not work. First off, several warnings.
Do not attempt this alone. It will take an hour to do so, and chances are, he will end up resetting at some point during that.
Watch your back, should should NEVER turn your back to him. Ever. You need to keep constant damage on him, or he speeds up and murders your face, however, the area he is in is teaming with mobs ((At the north end of the kiting path, there are a spider and flame druid spawn points. Just another reason to never come alone)).
Snake trap is useless. Somewhere, a myth got started that he will Deth Strike spiders from the trap. This is not true. I tried it for an hour and he never once hit them.
In order for him to activate Deth Strike his main target must be in range of him, or he must be rooted in place ((Like by spider webs. Like all of the other four spiders have. Funny that.))
Now that you have been warned, here is how I did it! First, I brought in two other hunters that were just around in molten front taming Solix ((I wouldn't suggest this. People on my server are saints, there is a good chance the hunters you bring, will steal your tame. Call in friends or guildies)) These tow hunters really just kept sending their pets at him, while my spider ((Skitterflame)) rooted him. Every time I rooted him, he would kill their two pets, and mine, dropping his health 30% at a time. Finally, he killed one last pet (9After five minutes of kiting)). Here is the tricky part. Your two assisting hunters must FEIGN DEATH ((Deth'tilac had switched his target to one of the hunters assisting me, so I couldn't tame until he did)) drop aggro once you are at max range. ((This is the one beast that I DID have to wait till 30% resource to tame)) pop your deterrence, and tame. If you do this at max range while his speed buffs are off, your tame will go off before he reaches you.
Have patience, and good luck on Deth'tilac.
Skarr and Karkin*- The Obsidium beasts.
Two of the easiest to tame if your Marksmen, which is almost an necessity here. If you aren't marksmen, you'll need help from someone with a silence.
All you really need to do is get the Coalescing Winds buff from successfully doing the platformer to get onto the island they spawn on. It increases your haste by 100% ((in my case, making my tame cast only five seconds)) Move as close to them as you can without falling off the cliff, shoot them with auto shot once, then silencing shot, pop deterrence, and tame. If you start taming fast enough, your tame should finish before the cool-down on their stun spell wears off, and you will tame them no problem. Both of these animals using the exact same abilities and taming strategy.
Ankha and Magria - The nudists.
Very simple. All you have to do is take all your ARMOR off. ((This only meets your chest, legs, wrists, gloves, belt, boots, shoulders and helm)) Your armor rating needs to be at 0 for this to work, so open your character menu and scroll to defense at the bottom, and make sure it is 0 before you tame. If it is zero, just run up to them, deterrence, and tame. That simple. No need for freezing trap, no max range, nothing. Deterrence and tame. They will hit you like wet noodles and you'll be fine. This is because Ankha and Magria's attack power and speed are based off their targets armor rating. Every 1 point of armor, is 1000% attack power and speed. with your armor rating at 0, so are their combat stats, turning the big scary cats, into frightened little pussy cats.
Ban'thalos - Vertigo
Once you see this big beautiful bird swirling up above the sanctuary of Malorne, get on your flying mount of choice, land on top of Malorn's head, look directly behind him and to your left. There will be a very tall tree. Fly up and land on top of this ((It is way easier than it looks, you just have to be careful.)) Place your freezing trap down on it. All you do then is fly up a few meters, wait for him to come into range, shoot him, fall back to the top of the tree, he will freeze, and then you just tame him. MAKE SURE YOU DO NOT MOVE WHILE FLYING UP OR FALLING BACK DOWN! Even the slightest bump of your movement keys will send you off course, you will miss the top of the tree, and fall to your death.
On 6/29/12 I tamed every last one of these creatures within 24 hours of each other ((Not counting Magria, who I am waiting to spawn now. Ankha, I did tame, however.))
A massive thank you to the shaman, two Deathknights, warrior, and three hunters that helped me in catching these creatures. I do not have their permission to list their names, so I won't, but you know who you are, and I owe you a lot.
Scylleena - Level 85 Night Elf Hunter - Moon Guard US
Walked into Molten Front Today
Between Hours of 11:00am Server Time To About 12PM Server Time, I found all 3 Spiders and Skarr.
Took me that hour to tame all 4 with dying and waiting 2 minutes to rez.
Deth I tamed @ 1:32 Pm Server Time. So Spider #4 All in One Day
High Pop server too.
All same spawn spots listed and followed everyone else's tactics.
i cant belive how some players can be so stupid and rude.
I found this guy and saw that horde player was taming him.
I stayed behind and I just wacthed him trying over and over.
And at the end, after a 5-6 another horde player camed and they killed him.
He saw that he cant tame him so he calls his friend to kill him so that I cant have him.
That is just dumb.
DAMNZ! i was prepairing for the tame, killing the mobs around placing the traps. then there was a blood elf paladin who killed it :'( sow now i must wait again for 7/17 hours to spawm :(
Hi, I just tried a technique of my own: I placed my trap, engaged with normal shot, stopped attacking. I directly started to tame, he ran into the trap afterwards. It didn't interrupt the trap. Tamed easily!
I thought this was very easy after reading some comments here and doing my own race.
Stand at max range, put down a Frost Trap about halfway between you, I pulled him with Wyvern sting, then Silence Shot so he wouldn't start his one-shot ability before he went into the trap. As soon as I had silenced him I popped deterrance and started tame. Deterrance wasn't really necessary, since the trap didn't break while I was taming him.
Now, I did this at 5.0.4 patch, so I don't know if he's gotten a nerf, but last time I tried he killed me about 10 times before I simply gave up...
He killed me once, since I was putting the trap at my feet and he stops to cast his one-shot before reaching melee range, but I was almost finishing tame even with that ... Had about .5 seconds left when he killed me.
Have fun hunting him! :)
I was up there looking for Skarr, but I found Karkin instead(which I already had). So I searched for hunters in the area and helped one get it. We decided for him to try to tame Skitterflame too. Once you get down the mechanics it's not that hard. You just pull it out of the lava with a slow, place a freezing trap and keep kiting it around till your freezing trap resets. His energy will keep decreasing and his buff will disappear. The hunter tamed it on the last freezing trap he placed, before his energy got to 0.
It is also important to note that we cleared the path of any mobs before he pulled it. That way he wouldn't have to deal with extra damage or something getting in his way.
Tried for an hour, eventually got pretty far, didn't do any damage to him except for initial pull, laid down 3rd freezing trap and he just died :/. After an hour... i guess at least i got 25g... hate these spiders, i dont even like spiders.
After three tries I decided to try something new. I had the minor glyph for a shortened tame beast. All I did was place a freezing trap right in front of him, pulled him with silencing shot, and then immediately started taming him right after the silencing shot. He stayed frozen the rest of the way. It only took 5 seconds.
Just stand at max range to be on the safe side, but like I said pull with silencing shot and let him walk into the freeze trap. Should be a walk in the park after that.
i logged in to camp for skarr, 3rd day now, and the second i log in my npc scan goes off for skitterflame, so i go look up how to tame him, when boom, npc scan goes off for skarr! tamed him right off. just got within range, hit tame pet and bam! done. went back for skitterflame, failed a few times, then one time after rezing i find him die...from an undead priest. ive submitted a screenshot of the sad sight...however, from a total of like 90 mins camping over 3 days (at least, logging in to camp), i now have karkin, skarr and kirix! im quite happy with that =]
So far this guy has proved to be by far the hardest tame and I'm beginning to think can't be tamed in MOP 5.2. 2 Ice traps and he interrupts and kills me (except for FD) 3 Ice Traps and he's dead before tame finishes, killed him twice now by mistake. One guy seems to have a plan on the third trap to break it so will try that the next time round. Will let you know how I go.
Also careful of some of these comments they are confused with Dethílec.
I am currently beside skitterflames' lava pools, (Im)patiently awaiting her return. My dilemma? Deciding whether to let her kill me or try again to tame her. I've had the fortune to see her twice, and the misfortune to discover the chrystaline tear of loyalty is stackable.
Please, almighty atheismo, let me tame him this time, and the fifty gold from those tainted tears will be given to charity.
(My having a character called charity is purely coincidental)
Just tamed this beautiful little guy, and had an issue with Freezing Trap. My first attempt at him, the traps wouldn't take his energy down at all. I had to Feign Death to reset him and try again. The second time around, the traps worked.
But, he is quite the easy tame if you plan your traps out right. Lay the first trap, and watch the cool down. When you have about 9 seconds left, pull. Let him get trapped. Get situated and put down the second trap. By then, you should have his energy down pretty low and he'll be tameable.
Best of luck!
Just tamed this guy today. Despite what I've read, I found that he needs to be
20 energy to tame, as it seems to eliminate his knock-back ability. After three tries I successfully tamed him on Silver Hand around 8:08 pm.
Essentially you just need to chain ice traps when you encounter him. Drop one, wait for the cooldown to finish so when you trap him, you can drop another one a few feet away so he'll chain into that one as well. After 2 traps he was at 20 energy, but you'll need part of a third to drop him below that, so be careful to not let him sit the full duration of the third trap.
Good Luck all.
Just tamed Anthriss, Karkin, and Skitterflame, all between 12:35 a.m. and 1:07 p.m. The guides on here were really helpful, since I'd tried Skitterflame three times before and failed all three days. So happy now!
I have been wanting to tame Skitterflame on my Drae Hunter for a while but didn't think i could because i suck at kiting (not everyone's good at it and hey, that's ok ;). Anyways, i read some of the posts and tried to ice trap, disengage, deterrence and tame but that didn't work so i decided to just try freezing it and it actually worked! All i did was freeze it, deterrence(just in-case), tame and Skitter was mine in like a few seconds hehe :). The glyph of "Tame Beast" really does come in handy hehe. I'm sure it was a glitch so any other Hunters who want this pretty spider better hurry and tame it before Blizz finds out it's glitched - IF it's glitched that is -
came upon this little guy while camping for karkin...died first time because i didnt know the mechanics (just ran in there tames-a-blazing haha)...resurrected at body and saw an ally hunter appeared and preparing to tame...we exchanged looks and he started with his freezing trap... when he ran out of CCs, i lay down my freezing trap and scatter shotted when that trap was over, which gave him enough time to reset his CDs...eventually we got him to 20 energy and the other guy got his tame (good for him)... and let this be a lesson to y'all...HUNTARDS UNITED!
Tamed him super easy today in 5.4. Just put him in a freezing trap (threw it right on top of where he was sitting before even tagging) and just tamed. Still had near full energy.
Apparently they made this a lot easier.
So I'm camping Skarr and Karkin for a couple of hours on my new hunter who's 85 and Skitterflame pops up. After dying once I come back and get his energy low and out of the corner of my eye I see this blood elf hunter struggling to hop across the rocks with Skitterfang targeted. I IMMEDIATELY knew what he was going to do. Not a doubt in my mind, lol. Which is why I had him on focus and screenshotted it.
He finally got his noob ass up there and of course killed it. And proceeded to emote me.
I then proceeded to shrug and laugh because it's only the lava spider model and I already got Deth'tilac. But I just wanted to put him on blast.
Literally no lower form of scum in this community and just goes to show how low it's sunk. Another hunter griefing like that is just embarrassing. Makes people waste so much real life time on camping it's ridiculous. Surprised they haven't made these things unkillable by anyone but the person who tagged it. Cross realm and pve ftw. If it was pvp many lols would be had. No matter, I have his name and server in case I ever want grief him. I do hold grudges and for almost no reason other than the satisfaction of revenge, lol.
Edit: LOL 10 min later I got Skarr np, GG.
Just tamed this guy. Didn't know the tactics so to avoid being interrupted by him i used an aspect of the fox. (Don't think it would work without a glyph of tame beast, though.)
So after 6 times trying to tame him its impossible as a level 100, I made a macro so that he would die from moving into the Freezing Trap:
/cast Concussive Shot
so I made a video showing my attempt here on Youtube: watch?v=nFsyc6tx0ek
Blizzard needs to fix this so people can tame it and also get the achievement.
Edit: So after posting about this on twitter a fellow hunter gave me the idea for the third time your Freeze Trap you melee it so that its energy doesn't keep draining so here's how you do it:
Un-equip everything but your gun/bow, Freeze Trap, wait till off cooldown then use Concussive Shot macro, once frozen lay down another Freeze Trap and un-equip your gun/bow, after he breaks free tank him, lay down third and final Freezing Trap, once he is below 20 energy punch him to release the Freezing Trap, then Tame Beast, and there you are :D
This one I found to be pretty simple guys, and this is for the lvl 100 hunters out here that are concerned about killing him during the tame. Here's my advice on how to do this pain-free. What you'll need.
1: Survival Spec with the Trap CD reduction talent
2: A G91 Landshark
The tame itself is simple. I killed the fire hawk and elemental nearest to the pool and pulled him out by just running up to him. I immediately placed a freezing trap and his energy began to wane. Now I am not sure why on this, but when I did it, not every freezing trap would reduce his energy. I tried to pull him further away from the lava (thinking that was the issue) and he just reset. So I would run back and forth from where that elemental spawns back to the fire hawk, dropping every freezing trap you can as you go.
When the second trap works he will be at 22% energy. Perfect. However, remember, he will die if he reaches zero. This is where your landshark comes into play. You're going to repeat the same kiting method (back and forth from the elemental nearest to him to the fire hawk) until the third trap works, and his energy drops below 22%.
shoot your G91 Landshark at him before he reaches zero energy, and tame beast. Simple stuff.
You can buy those landsharks for maybe 1 gold each. This method worked perfectly for me. Let me know how it works for you. Happy hunting.
The easiest way I found to tame this nice looking spider was to stand on the ledge above him at 20.16, 44.88 and just hit Tame Beast. He makes his way up the ledge eventually, but pathing slows him down enough to let you tame him before he knocks you back. Basically just stand at the very end of Tame Beast's 30 yard range, and you should be fine!
After downvoting someone for saying "Yeah, you can just get on the level above them at blah blah coords, it's an easy tame"...Those coords didn't wok for me (she just crawled right up), BUT THESE DID: 21.63,46.03.
Confirming the "tame from the ledge" strategy (Legion 7.0). I stood at 20, 46, dropped a freezing trap on her just because and tamed. She did climb up at me, but I had enough time to get the tame off. Since that is very close to other people's coordinates, I'd say it's a good spot.
LEGION lvl 110 Taming 2.0
To tame this spider there is a trick that works to work around his charge that is pretty annoying.
Get a Shaman to help out, first get him to cast Heroism, u can ofc use a mage aswell for this but the shaman will also need to HEX Skitterflame, you can do it without the Heroism if timed correctly.
Have the Shaman use hex on Skitterflame it will get his attention and aggro, start your taming once he is casting hex and has aggro, If you hex him and then cast tame he will brake the hex and charge u again.
So its a bit tricky to get the timing right, but its the only thing that worked for me after killing Skitterflame a few times and I tried survival spec and frost traps/tar traps, concussive macros and so on, they brake and he charges and so do all other methods except this one with the help of a shaman.
I also did Kirix at the same time with the help of the shaman, Heroism and haste food and a pot if u got it will do the trick, but this is also down to correct timing since he does a silence and knockback .. but the only way to taming Kirix is get as much haste for the taming as possible.
They have fixed the standing on the floating rock, he will evade constantly so just ignore that method.
Good luck and may the pet gods be on your side
Not having the tricks mentioned here work for me I remembered what was said in the comments on Petopia for taming Kirix using Aspect of Turtle so I dropped a frost trap on it just to give me more time while standing on the ledge above it hit my turtle aspect then tame beast it came at me but having turtle on with freezing trap helped keep it slow enough for tame beast to work.
Hope this helps others in taming this spider.
110 BM Hunter
/cast Concussive Shot
On the ledge above him, cast your macro, then use Tame. Done.
Well, since I had trouble finding information on this guy, I thought I would share what I've found for those who don't know.
As of 2018:
Skitterflame, and the other rare lava spiders spawn in Molten Front. Molten Front is a zone found through a portal in Mount Hyjal. To be able to click on the portal and get into Molten Front, you need to complete a series of quests at the Sanctuary of Malorne in Mt. Hyjal. As part of the series, you will get a quest to obtain 20 Marks of the World Tree. These marks are the currency used to buy various things in the Molten Front. Once you complete enough dailies to get 20 marks, you will open up the portal into Molten Front.
Yay! You got inside! Now you will be given more quests and dailies, through which you will gather more Marks of the World Tree. You will also get a new quest to obtain 150 marks for Malfurion.
Important: Skitterflame and the other rare lava spiders, along with some other named mobs in Molten Front will NOT show up for you to tame until you have obtained 150 Marks of the World Tree and completed the associated quest for those 150 marks.
This is what I have learned so far, please feel free to comment with anything I've missed and I will edit. I have not yet finished the 150 marks quest, so I can't comment on how to go about the actual taming process.
So he was up for me today (Along with Deth, who I did get) and, I could not tame him. I'm a 120 BM hunter. Would throw out Freezing Traps, he'd get the debuff that he was cooling off, but, his energy wouldn't budge. It stayed at 100% the whole time. I threw out 6 freezing traps at him and nothing.
Is this a bug? From what I've read, this should have worked.
To any future Hunters reading these comments please note that you absolutely must camp these spiders (and other rares in the area) in order to see them due to weird server instancing issues. Basically instances (particularly the Molten Front) will be put into "standby" mode (probably to conserve server resources) if no one's in the instance. That means timers don't time, and as soon as you enter, NPCs and timers are reset. I used to check every morning before work to see if these would spawn and to no avail they did not spawn.
I digress, after about 2 or so hours of camping Skitterflame's spawn, he spawned and I tamed him. Good luck.
EDIT (13 minutes later): Karkin spawned and tamed him too.
EDIT 2 (32 minutes later): Solix spawned and tamed him too.
Ok so I don't know if anyone else in the comments has said this but there's a rock ledge like the ones you use to parkour up to where Skitterflame spawns just above and to the right of them, it took me like twenty tries but I was able to use Disengage to jump onto it, I couldn't tame but I could shoot so after I did that it was an easy tame because there was no available path for Skitterflame to get to you. I hope this was able to help someone!
To the hunter trying to tame this guy this AM on Area 52, you had to use the ice trap to cool him before you can get the tame off. I watched you battle him for a full 90 seconds before I jumped in with the traps to cool him and tamed him. Sorry, I just couldn't let you keep fighting him and not realize the tame strategy. My hunters name is "Headshot" on Area 52. If you need help with this guy or any of the spiders on MF drop me a line and I will be more than willing to help you get these spiders, cause they aint easy to tame solo. Sorry, and have a boomstick day.
Does anyone know how to tame Skitterflame since Shadowlands came out? The Freeze Trap no longer lowers his energy level!
he died after i tranq shot him with no gear on not even a weapon and then he went out of the pool and died :(
Wow was this one a pain. The most difficult out of all the molten front spiders for me. I read through all the comments; ice trap did nothing, energy wasn't ever going down, killed it twice on accident... ugh.
But, today, 11-28-2021, I finally did something that worked.
I went to the general location of the coords suggested by AllianceHead : 21.63,46.03. You can see in my screenshots I was not exact, but I was close. Note that this puts you on a ledge ABOVE Skitterflame.
(there are several wind "vents" in the area you can use to give you a buff to jump up there, nothing special or extra needed)
Screenshots for reference:
As you can see in the screenshots, I then placed the freeze trap a little down the side off the ledge I was on in Skitterflame's path to me. I stood back a bit, while still keeping in tame range, and started taming.
Skitterflame came up the side of the ledge and hit the trap right as the tame was done and the knockback happened, and it was tamed. Also of note, I had all gear, including my bow, off. I never used any abilities other than tame though.
Just something a little different to try for people who, like me, were not getting the energy to go down at all. GOOD LUCK! :)
