Only real notable ability is that at certain points of the fight she will fly up high and pull a person onto her altar, summoning 3 weak enemies to stun that player with purple beams. Once the adds are killed the player can move again. As this happens she sends a sword slowly down to the altar from above, which will explode and cause AOE damage when it hits the ground. At this point she will fly down and resume fighting. This is as of build 8885.
On heroic mode it is essential the Summoning adds are taken down as fast as possible, Single target DPS has 2 problems, you will not kill the adds fast enough sequentially, and single target DPS (direct damage?) on the adds triggers a DoT on the DPS which will stack. Therefore it is essential to use AOE to kill the 3 adds (tested with Volley, mind sear and Rain of Fire).
I would also recommend all the party stand up on the stage, away from the altar, so they are in line of sight for healing.
There is also an achievement related to this boss, not listed here on wowhead, which is to get the boss to kill a Hulking abomination on heroic mode, Presumably the tank pulls one of the 2 Abominations in the room and tanks it on the alter while it is DPSed down to 10% HP, then the AOE from the ritual should finish it off. There is no indication that you need to successfully kill the boss as well.
You CANNOT use Arcane Explosion in this build. It'll put three stacks on and HURT!
Btw, this was on Heroic. I don't know about Normal.
Just to be clear, in heroics you must use AoEs that
do not deal direct damage.
So basically, Dragon's Breath, Arcane Explosion, Cone of Cold and Blastwave are out of the question.
The achivement related to this boss is the
The Incredible Hulk
which require you to kill a
Ritual of the Sword
Her Ritual of the Sword ability may be a reference to the Sword of Damocles story:
"Damocles exclaimed that, as a great man of power and authority, Dionysius was truly fortunate. Dionysius offered to switch places with him for a day, so he could taste first hand that fortune. In the evening a banquet was held, where Damocles very much enjoyed being waited upon like a king. Only at the end of the meal did he look up and, when he did, notice a sharpened sword, hanging by a single horse-hair, directly above his head. Immediately, he lost all taste for the fine foods and beautiful boys, and asked leave of the tyrant, saying he no longer wanted to be so fortunate."
The sword that descends upon the sacrificed player during her Ritual of the Sword is in fact
, which drops from the Four Horsemen Chest in heroic Naxxramas
Just a little tidbit: She starts as Undead, then when Arthas transforms her to the boss you fight, she turns into a Humanoid. I just thought that'd be something interesting to know.
Svala = cool in Icelandic :)
Just if anyone would find it interesting ...
I did not... come this far... to..AUUGHUGUHGUHLKHGADFS
Sounds like a 12 yr old boy
You know what i find odd? i dont know if its like this in the game or just a glitch with wowhead but, her Vykrul form is a UNDEAD, and her Val'kyr (which are undead) is a HUMANOID. Anyone see a problem with this?
Their buff can be spellstolen so it should be purgeable/dispellable. Then feel free to AOE to your heart's content.
Does anyone know what she's referring to in the cut-scene about "doing what she promised"? This act is apparently what causes Arthas to "reward" her with her transformation.
The Lich King tends to "reward" his most loyal lieutenants, such as Overlord Drakuru with his "Gift". Which apparently is one of the greatest things to happen for a brainwahsed lackey. In this case you must follow the Lich King's Orders precisely or succumb to a more worse fate than Death. Requirements to ascend to this rank is unknown, but what is known is you must be a Female Vrykul and must be in good favor of the Lich King. Very good favor, enough to be a Judger of the Damned.
This is a more darker version of the
of Norse Mythology; winged sapients who choose the most succeeding of Norse Warriors to ascend to Valhalla and fight alongside Oden in the Ragnarök.
Svala Sorrowgrave is the first boss of Utgarde Pinnacle. She is a vrykul who is being transformed into a val'kyr by the Lich King just as you enter the room that she resides in.
Attacks and abilities
Sinister Strike - hits tank for ~2k (Heroic ~4500 on plate)
Call Flames - Flame bolt volley for low damage (Heroic ~4k)
Ritual of the Sword - teleports one party member to the altar and summons three adds which channel spells holding the party member in place. A sword slowly descends toward the altar, and if the adds are not killed by the time the sword reaches the altar it hits the sacrifice target for 100% of its health.
Normal - This fight is quite easy. Sorrowgrave's damage is low, and the adds have low health.
Every 20 seconds or so she will sacrifice a party member. She rises to the ceiling and teleports the targeted member to the altar. Three adds appear and channel a spell holding the party member in place.
You have approximately 8 seconds to kill all the adds before the sword reaches the altar and kills the sacrifice target. Iceblock can be used to avoid the sacrifice, it is unknown whether other abilities also work. These abilities do not remove the sacrifice on Heroic Mode.
Heroic - The adds have much more health and apply a dot to any player who casts a direct damage spell on them. Having a substantial AOE damage is very useful to kill the adds in time.
Fellow moonkins, summon your treants if you have them for this fight, there is a chance for them to get sacrificed. The same for DK's ghouls.
Also note that ranged DPS can continue to shot her during sacrifice.
She is when you enter the room, a female vrykul. But when you close up, the lich king pops up in the portal, and empowers her, turning her into a powerfuller foe. When you engage her, she does nothing special actually, the only thing she does, is calling flames from the braziers, which wont cause much damage.
But be aware. After not long, she summons 3 ritualists, and teleports a player to the altar. She will then start to send her sword down towards the target at the altar. The Ritualists will all channel a stun effect, which makes you unable to move. All must die quickly, before the sword hits the one that gets strapped at the altar. The sword will crash into the altar, and anyone that stands there will get a strong DoT effect on them. This makes it importnant to free the group member before its too late.
She will do this several times during the fight, but just kill them in time, and it will be allright
When my group killed her, the triumph music known as ''Rise of the vrykul'' appeared.
I know it suits her, but I cannot stand this boss's voice. It grates my ears.
"I did not come this far to...URRGG...BLEEEEEEEAAAH"
We had her bug out today, we pulled the Scourge Hulk in the corridor past Svala to speed it up a little, but as we did and Svala transforming, she stayed 'Svala', and never transformed into Svala Sorrowgrave. She had the beam from The Lich King on her, but just didn't transform.
Decided quickly to skip her .. never had this before, it always worked earlier. Anyone else had this problem ?
She hits a little too hard to be soloed by a retribution spec paladin in pvp gear with a shield and a one-hander in Normal mode.
The trash mobs up to her I was able to solo, although the Scourge Hulks took a few tries usually. I do wonder if any properly geared (for tanking) paladins or other classes have managed to solo her? I got her health down to about 70% or so, but I would think that with epic tanking gear she might be soloable. At least she didn't do the Ritual of the Sword on me, presumably because I was alone.
She sounds like she was voiced by Margaret Cho.
Just soloed this boss on heroic mode as a level 85 prot pally with 119k hp, was fairly easy fight, only real damage she does is the fireballs that come from those Braziers.
The only real deadly mechanic in the whole encounter is the ritual of the sword, which does a hell of a ton of damage. However as a paladin i was able to bubble as soon as the ritual hit, negating the entire DoT damage.
All in all it was fairly easy to solo, but classes without a way to stop the ritual damage might have some problems!
I just solo'd her on my Prot warrior. Lvl 84 with 77490 health and mostly green gear. I was down to under 3k health when I got the killing blow.
Soloable as 85 Shadow Pri. Just use dispersion when the sword nearly touches you.
There's some glitch or nerf in version 4.1, if you're solo (dunno about if you're with another person or not), but when she does ritual of the sword, she'll stay within melee range when you're helpless and keep attacking you. Since I'm a soloing warrior (who has had no trouble in the past fighting her), I don't have anyone to take down the adds doing the ritual to free myself, so I usually just take the ritual damage and pop enraged regeneration to heal up damage then finish her off, but now when she's hitting you while helpless, she easily kills me =/
since a lot of ppl are likely farming this instance for the blue proto drake, i figured i'd share a tip for the hunters out there.
first, tho- remember that the fight can be skipped. she doesn't drop anything of any real value, so fighting her is really only necessary if you're like me, and hate to leave a boss (or any mob) standing. :D
anyway- i find it best as a hunter to use beast spec for this fight, and as i always keep at least one spirit beast in stock, i pull one of those for the healing skill and make sure it's NOT on auto for the start of the fight. i misdirect to the cat and hit her with serpent sting, so it ticks away while i'm being held on the altar.
she pulls you up on the altar about 10 seconds into the fight, so somewhere between 5 and 8 seconds in, i pop wrath. this gives my spirit cat a little added damage and protection while it kills the accolytes for me. while it's doing that, i target myself and hit the heal - i can get in at least 2 before it's gotten the 3 helpers down and freed me, and it helps negate the damage from the fireballs being hurled at me.
usually end the fight in about 10 seconds after being freed, unloading on her with arcane and kill command. done this way, she's a fast and relatively easy kill.
i've tried it in marksman many many times, and for whatever reason, more often than not i can't seem to get the pet to kill the adds fast enough. by the time i get away, the fireballs have dropped my health to where one or 2 more hits is all it takes to send me to my grave. this is in 4.2 wearing firelands gear and pulling 20k+ dps. drives me nuts. if anyone has tips on doing her in MM spec, i'd love to hear them!
Maybe it was the ritual that caused the damage but when I tried her just now (83 Fury Warrior), I was channeled to the altar and held there by the mages for a good 15-20 seconds. After awhile though it just looked like an AoE attack and I could move again. Even though she was in range the whole time, I could use no attacks or abilities.
Normal mode btw.
Just a note for any Mages (and presumably Paladins) trying to get the Blue Proto-Drake, or farming old rep like Sunreaver and such, you can Ice Block, and therefore probably Bubble out of the Ritual, making this fight a doozy. However if you do this, the Banshee's that usually stun you come and attack you. Not a lot of trouble as Fire as a couple of Flamestrike's obliterates them, but still worth mentioning.
The ritual has either been nerfed, or the poster who said if the adds aren't killed by the time the sword hits, that it takes 100% health away, is just plain wrong. The entire process does do a significant amount of damage; but I was able to solo it in Heroic mode as an 85 Assassination Rogue (139k health) in 390 PvP gear.
The trick here is to do whatever it takes to keep your health up (Evade, Cloak of Shadows, Combat Readiness) before the ritual, and immediately before it, try to pop Recuperate. If that fails, then just spam the hell out of your health pot so it fires as soon as control is given, and then hit Recuperate. If you don't , you're likely to die in between the time you realize you have control, and hitting the pot (like I did on try #2) .
As protection paladin in 373 ilvl tank gear I took around 40k dmg during duration of the ritual (from those spawned dudes, her and sword) - managed to pop some CD before ritual:) so that most likely helped
easy solo as prot pally use consecration right before the ritual and the ghost will die. Took me 25 sec
At level 90 the damage caused by Ritual Strike is laughable, and could be easily ignored if not for the fact that it immobilizes you.
No one commented that she probably is a reference to the valkyrie Svafa?
Wowhead, I am dissapoint.
I got Bands of Fading Light from her. I'm surprised to see that it isn't listed here.
I've been running this instance (solo with my L90 monk, rogue, and DK) every day (raising money by AHing stuff), and only today have I wondered what happens if you ignore her? I guess I'll have to try it to find out. <G>
