Redolent Whelks seem to come in two color options. The two colors options are Pinkish/Purpleish with blue flower accents and Teal with two accent flowers, orange and red.

They are part of the new World Quest 'Shell Corporation' (Quest not on wowhead yet) and jeez, that World Quest is (so far) by a large margin the worst designed World Quest.
You might thing there is no QA and the people designing it are doing it for the first time for the first MMO ever.

The quest requires you to feed these Whelks a mushroom (deepcap something) that grows in the area, you pick up a shroom, throw it to the whelk which then becomes friendly and drops a shell you have to pick up to give credit for the quest. You have to this eight (8) times.

Let me do the checks for 'utterly crappy quest' requirements:

1. The whelks are marked as quest objective, thus are quite often killed by players - not sure if they drop the shell then (not killed them myself, but can understand the confusion) but I guess not.

2. The shrooms spawn a bit slowly and can only be picked up by a single player. Someone else got to it before you, bad luck for you.

3. The shrooms give you a 1 minute buff during which you have an extra action button to throw it at the whelk. Fairly short range (15-20y maybe). Anything BUT walking with them will cancel the buff, you lose the extra action button and have to look for a brand new mushroom. See 2. for that part. Aye, good luck getting another one close to a whelk.
Yes, anything cancels: mounting, shapeshifting and movement speed abilities. Have tested it as druid and paladin but assume other classes' abilities won't work either. Great design.

4. When it drops the quest-relevant shell - you may have guessed it - this can only picked up by a SINGLE player and then despawns. And it can be picked up by ANYONE, not just the person who threw the shroom. Ninja away - guess the quest ought to be called 'bloody shell brawl war thingy'.

5. The friendly whelk also despawns when it dropped a shell - so 1 single shell per whelk. And to add insult to injury the whelks take eons to respawn, no matter if killed or friendly-ed and how many players are in the area. There were like 20 people camping spawn points on my server and the whelks still took 2-3 minutes to respawn or even longer.

Holy skagsuck, not touching this quest again. Ever.

Couldn't find a mushroom to feed them for the questline so just killed one and got my drop. So just kill them.
