This is the second boss of the "Plague" (south-east) wing of Naxxramas. Strategies for defeating him can be found at
The reason why some people die on the 2nd safe zone of phase 2, is that the texture, or rather the Slime Burst, seems to be a bit bugged when walking from 1st -> 2nd.
Here is an example picture:
The cracks in the orange square are where I got hit most of the times.
The burst slime animation doesn't show slime splashing there, but if you get too far you can and will most probably get hit.
On a sidenote, here is an SWF movie explaining how to dance:
Darn so good healing gear from this boss. Physical dps'ers don't get much love in the beginning of Naxx.
I would say the most important tip for this fight is to NOT watch other people while doing the dance. Staying with the pack will mean you are actually behind because of lag. Watch and stay ahead of the slime bursts and win.
Also, for making it through the gauntlet to this guy: Use mind vision to keep track of where the beasts are. You can skip some of them if your timing is right. You can also pull a pack and not kill one of the critters, preventing the whole pack from respawning. A little cheap but eh :). Keep diseases of your mages and have warriors AoE taunt if necessary. Yell at the bad players who lag behind and pull respawning packs.
We pull and kill the 1st beast, pull the first pack and keep a bat/maggot alive, time the 2nd beast have the raid run across to the far wall and AoE, run against this wall around the corner and AoE here, then move across the entrance to Heigan's room into the corner and AoE again. We rez, summon, and drink here.
i found this from some freinds and i think itll save some guild hell of alot of greif. Maybe you already know but i didnt. Its frekin eazy mode for anyone. dont thank me all at once
He needs some
His name explains it all.
Anyone done this boss lately? We did Naxxramas today, and found out that he's somehow bugged; he's not in the room when we enter it. Or well, he somehow is, because he's randomly hitting random raid members every now and then, but still we can't see him / do anything to him. We got GM to reset him, which was good for one try, well, we wiped, came back, and noticed him being bugged again. :)
So, anyone else encountered this / knows what might cause this?
i hate him. wiping there for like 1 hour.... damn
During the Death Knight starting quests Noth the Plaguebringer (another Naxx boss) will have the option of asking him "Where's Heigan?" To which he might reply
"Heigan is probably performing maintenance on his slime and crap filled dance studio."
"That no-good kiss up is probably practicing ballet in his chambers"
Both cracks at the Naxx encounter where players had to "dance" to avoid Heigan's attacks.
So you think you can dance?
At first, it seems very complicated. "But how are we supposed to know where to move? There's so much space ahead of us".
After one or two attempts in Naxx 10, we deduced four of the 'craters' in the ground we could use as markers for where to move during each part of the safety dance - having something to actually look at and know when to stop is much easier than simply relying on 'feel'.
As a result, we got him the very next attempt. We would have also gotten "The Safety Dance" achievement (no-one dying), but alas one player had fairly poor ping. =)
We did this fight the other night, we found out that if you tank Heigan in one corner of the platform during phase 1, the ranged can stand in the opposite corner without getting the debuff. This is very helpful when people don't know how to dance.
I came across a very useful flash img on the internet i thought i would share with you all, This clearly indecates were the erupts are.
At level 80 in heroic mode (25man) he does a few things differently:
He doesn't teleport anyone anywhere.
I haven't noticed the time between the flame eruptions decrease in any way. It stays at a constant rhythm throughout the fight.
EDIT: I see it does increase in speed a bit now from when the tank is dragging him about during the first phase.
If you do get hit by the eruptions it seems to hit for 6.5-8k damage, I haven't seen it resisted, and sadly have been hit by it probably around 6-8 times in the 4-5 attempts it took us to down him.
The disease he casts doesn't decrease max health by 50% as far as I have noticed (although I've just decursed it rather than checking what it does first as I'm a healer not a tank).
He does some sort of AOE damage when he teleports himself to his platform, but I haven't really hung around long enough to find out whether it drains mana as well, I'm pretty sure it doesn't, either way you shouldn't be standing near him when he teleports so it's not a problem.
Basically the fight is solely about his 1 real gimmick with a couple of standard boss type abilities. Similar to how it has always been done, it just requires everyone to get the timing right for the eruptions. One thing a guildy said during the fight that seemed to help a lot of people was "Look where the flames erupt in front of you, you should be standing on that spot as soon as they have disappeared."
Just did this fight last night (on 10 man), and let me tell you, it's a blast. I was the main tank (prot warrior), and I started tanking him in the first blast area, which you can get to by following the wall on the right as you walk in the door only about 10 yards. I would kite the boss to the safe zones in the fire during phase one while the OT and only rogue we had followed me around... we were safe. The rest of the healers and range stayed on the platform and didnt have to worry about the disease or fire.
Five seconds before phase 2, the dps and healers all ran to the safe zone to get in place for the fire bursts. I put a star on my head, and everyone stayed close to me. It turns out that half of our raid wasn't cut out for it, and went down down down, down in a burnin fire... heh heh. BUT! while the other 5 of us /point /rofl at the dead bodies on the ground, we managed to take the boss down from 60% on. Granted, it was a 14 minute fight, but it was great fun, and if you just pay attention to the fires, this is just a fight you have to learn the feel of where to stand and.... don't be an idiot!
On another side funny note, it turns out that the dead bodies made great markers of the 4 different blast zones :)
Healed on 10-man as a Resto Shaman tag-teaming with a Holy Paladin. My
combined with the
from the Pala kept the MT up just fine. Chain Heal took care of melee silly enough to be hit by
was handled by putting me in the melee group and having
Disease Cleansing Totem
up a few yards in front of the platform. This also reduces the number of raid wide disease applications in phase changes. All in all a pretty simple fight healing-wise with this combo.
Don't forget to stomp
on the platform when he teleports there, it's free DPS during the running phase.
Engineering Flares are a MASSIVE help on this fight for marking where to stand. Bring them if you have them. Also, shaman disease cleansing totem = win.
Very easy fight if you don't screw up. Of course when we did it on 25 man more than half the raid died on the first phase 2 leaving only 1 healer (a priest) 2 tanks a ret pally and all the rest dps, we were still able to kill him with just 7 people and 1 healer because those remianing people didn't mess up. Just go to where the ground sparkles after each eruption.
Note for BM hunters:
Your pet will die if he engages Heigan. He'll always end up right on one of the eruption zones and end up dead. I recommend you leave him on passive, have him up on the platform with you, and just gain the bonus of Bestial Wrath from him. He'll probably die in phase 2 anyway.
On the 10 man version we lost 8 of our people. Myself a resto shaman, and a pally tank two-manned him from half health to 200k, until a misheal went off and the tank died. Pretty simple if you can just survive the dance. Lasted 25 minutes pretty sure we could've kept it up if I didn't misheal. Probably can two-man the boss, but very time consuming on it.
There is no enrage timer (on normal difficulty anyway).
After most of the raid wiped at their first opportunity, we managed to kill him with just 3 of us (tank, dps, healer).
Total time: 22 minutes 48 seconds
Heigan the Unclean
(DANCE your pants off)
2 PHASE FIGHT
. (phase 1, only MT and melee dance. slow pace. phase 2, everyone dances. fast pace)
: Start tanking Heigan in POSITION 1 (closest to the start). It's very important to understand the four positions of the fight as the MT as you will lead the dance. This entire fight is about continually moving the raid OUT of the eruption zones.
Ranged DPS and Healers
: Stand on the platform where Heigan is standing when you first enter the room. You stay on this platform and dps and heal from there until Phase 2.
When Phase 2 begins you must get off the platform IMMEDIATELY! Head to POSITION 1 for Phase 2.
Keep disease off of everyone as a priority
. Decrepit Fever reduces HP and does 500dmg every 3 secs. KEEP IT OFF! Disease cleansing totem will usually take care of the caster dps and healers but not the melee.
: Stay on top of the MT and keep moving with him.
Phase 1 dance
: You just go from Position 1 to 4 and then back again. It's a slower pace so your tank will pause between each burst. Wait for burst, then move, wait for burst then move.
Phase 2 dance
: Exactly the same as phase 1 but you move at a much faster pace. Don't bother with anything but instant casts as casting will slow you down and most likely you'll be hit by an eruption.
: On POSITION 1 and POSITION 4, don't head too far past their border so you can get back to POSITION 2 and POSITION 3 quicker.
: Watch the crack where the eruption in front spawns so you know that's how far you have to go for the next safe zone.

Having problems with the dance phase on the Heigan fight? Listen to
20 times beforehand and sing it to yourself while running. If you move with the rhythm, you won't get blasted. Trust me.
I have a question. in raid 10, I tank Heigan on one corner of the safe zone and all the healers and range dps are in the opposite. They are not affected by spell disruption. In raid 25 we always do the dance in p1 but I was wondering if I could do the same tanking that I do in raid 10. The rang of spell disruption does not change, right?
gives you no advantage to the unclean. :(
Note that in the WotLK version, the general info above is no longer accurate. He doesn't teleport people anymore, and the area before him is no longer a gauntlet.
On the other hand, he has a new ability, Spell Disruption (
). It affects all nearby players in phase 1, making it important to keep your distance to him if you are a caster.
Yeah we just 3 manned it on normal with 2 pallies (prot/holy) and an arms warr.. Only took 30 minutes.
I have uploaded a picture of how to throw down smoke flares that will provide start/stop points for phase 2. You would be amazed how well this helps poeple.
If the screenshot isn't approved, here is a direct download link.
First time doing this guy tonight, one thing I noticed that no one else mentions is that during phase two he still uses his disease aura and if you dance too close to his stage then you will take damage from it and probably die. Make sure to move about ten yards into the field when you dance in order to avoid that.
once some of your people know how to dance and cleanse you are fine... all of our raid died except for 4... they took him down from 70% to around 26% and then one died... 3 people took him down to 3% from there then the diesese wasnt cured on the tank and he got killed
so basically make sure the diseases are cleansed and that you atleast have a tank and a healer up at all times to stay alive
if you are DPS when Heigan runs down the stairs towards the tank go towards the back of the room and then to the door at an angle to avoid the disease from Heigan (you must be 21+ yards away from him)
Also a great guide for him
(they also have great guides for all the Naxx bosses
Animation for the sequence:
(Taken from a post above)
Also the only things that are true about his abilities is
and about Phase 1 and 2.
Here is also a layout of the pattern:
Phase 1: 1-2-3-4-3-2-1-2-Teleport (raid moves to quarter 1).
Phase 2: 1-2-3-4-3-2-1-2-3-4-3-2-Engage (move him back to Quarter 1; ranged return to platform). (Taken from tankspot.com)
This video will teach you how to effectively perform the Safety Dance required in this fight:
we can dance if we want to, we can leave you noobs behind, cuz the noobs dont dance and if they dont dance they DIE.
LEARN THE SAFETY DANCE PEOPLE.
Can we get some voice files for his guy :)?
You don't have to dance with him in Phase 1.
It is possible for the tank to drag Heigan to one corner of his little stage, and have the raid stand in the opposite corner. With careful positioning, we can avoid the splashing death behind you while staying out of range of his nasty aura.
Thanks to the achievement system I do this entire fight while singing Safety Dance in my head...
Today in my guild in my first run we had to learn the dance. Several members were having trouble getting back into the safe zone in 1. Being the resourceful person I am in raids I dropped my
which lasts for 5 minutes and was a very good guide of where to get to for safety.
Now we get to the entire reason for this post. The
gave me the idea for a much easier and better mention. Give either one of your melee DPS or tanks that is not tanking this fight
Green Smoke Flare
. During Phase 1 you have the person with the flares drop one in each safe zone. They last for 5 minutes so they may need to refresh them during a third phase one if you need that many. The flares allow anyone and everyone who does not know the dance well to see where to get to.
I'm surprised no one has pointed this out by now. Just like Shade of Aran and the Prince in Karazhan, a very difficult boss is able to be defeated using a relatively simple exploit (though to be fair, making it far less entertaining in the process).
It is possible to complete this encounter without "dancing" at all. I just did 10-man Heigan and we discovered that there is a spot where the slime never plumes at all, but the area is extremely small so it may take some trial and error for your group, especially in 25-man (has not been tested, but assumed to also work there). Assuming you are looking at Heigan from the side opposite of the platform where he stands, there is a spot against the wall to the immediate right of his platform, extending to the first pillar. To avoid the slime and the debuff, all members of the raid must hug the wall, right against that first pillar. If you've done it right, none of your members will take any damage whatsoever, and if any do stray, they can be healed until they get back into the proper spot. Not only that, but your ranged DPS can continue to nuke him with impunity. Then when you return to phase 1, your tank merely goes onto the platform and repeats the process. Because of the continual DPS, you should not need to do this more than twice. Thus, no dance whatsoever.
Note: because of LOS issues, while your raid does not take damage in that spot during phase 1, it is somewhat difficult to stay in that spot during the entire encounter. We wiped the first time trying because our healers wasn't in LOS of our tank. Though if you can balance distance and staying in LOS, it would make an already easy encounter completely brainless.
Please, if anyone else has done this strategy with the same degree of success as we did, you're welcome to point out anything I may have missed. Good luck!
Main tanked the fight for the first time tonight after twice as off tank. Two tips:
put a raid marker on "someone who knows the fight" and tell newcomers to "follow him." As noted previously, inherent network lag means that people who try this will inevitably die.
People have to learn the dance themselves
. Talk about the "four quadrants," point them to the flash and other visual illustrations listed here, use flares, etc., but of course true learning will only come by doing.
I had learned to do the dance by, in part, cutting the corners around the platform. A fellow raid member suggested a slightly-different strategy.
When entering the room, there is a pillar (a "bump in the wall") to the right of the doorway. There is a matching pillar on the other side of the room. Do the dance by
moving laterally in a straight line
between the pillars. This both saves time and is simpler to learn.
With this method we got Heigan down on the second try, with
only three out of nine
(we started one short) dead despite only me and one or two others not new to the fight. Both my previous 10 and 25 defeats of the guy, by contrast, were the sorts of Bataan Death Marches Farberian and DDDevilz described with the vast majority (including me) dead almost immediately and the surviving few slowly grinding the boss down.
Contrary to what most of the Perfect People said above, this fight is
easy. It's doable, but unlike every other fight in the entire game, there's no "whoops" clause for lag. You lag, you die, easy, peasy.
Something that no one, absolutely NO ONE, that I have ever had explain it or try to explain it has made it clear to me before, and this might be my stupidity, but don't get too far from the platform. Just off the edge so you don't get the bosses death cloud. You don't have to run so far and it makes it easier. Also, don't look at anything other than the wowwiki article on this fight, there is a good picture that shows the whole thing.
Very easy fight if all on same page. Tank(s) and DPS need to just slowly kite him into the 4 areas(watch it, some are small and some are big) while ranged(and healz)shoot at him from altar. Relatively slow burn. At phase two every one collaspes to area 1 and as soon as they see the GGoD(green goo of death), the basicaly run from one side to another fer 45 sec.(remember, about 15-7.5 sec before he goes to phase 2, throw up all DoTs u have) Note: healers, only instant casts like renew or all druid healz(resto druids are VERY nice here), also, priests throw down a lightwell to heal stragglers or any1 who gets hit. After u get this down its a rinse and repeat. (BTW no enrage timer, killed him with me as last DPS today, took 15 min, worry free.)
Do NOT mark someone up and have everyone follow during phase 2, it will get ppl killed. I've seen it happen over and over again. Everyone HAS to know the dance.
Another thing that gets a lot of people killed: when dancing in phase 2, and getting to the safe zone on the edges of the room (zones 1 and 4), don't run to the wall! Stay close to the edge with the zone you just came out of, otherwise you won't have enough time to turn around and run back in the opposite direction.
People don't have to do the dance at all. You really only need to move to 2 spots the whole fight. We did it and got the Safety Dance achievement. Our method is the same in 10 or 25 man.
Here's a link to how we did it and a video of us in action:
Naxxramas Bosses - Heigan the Unclean
During the dance phase, only worry about yourself, including healers. You simply can't help people who fall too far behind on the dance. Healers might be able to spare an instant while they're moving, but there is simply no time to cast anything during the dance phase. In the end for 10-man, you literally only need a tank and a healer (and someone with disease cleansing if your healer is not a priest/paladin/shaman) while the rest of the raid can go bake a cake or something.
The primary way I gauge where to stand for each safe zone is based on Heigan's platform which can easily be divided into 4 sections, the left side, the length divided into two halves, and then the right side. I highly recommend that people stay as close to the platform without actually getting hit by the plague cloud as it will cut back on your travel time.
Safe zone 1 ends just after the left corner of his platform.
Safe zone 2 ends just around the midpoint of the length of his platform.
Safe zone 3 ends just before the right corner of his platform
Safe zone 4 is pretty self explanatory.
He does not have an enrage timer or whatsoever on normal mode
We started the event and after the first "second phase" 7 people died. Tank (me), healer and a dps survived and went on, from 1.4 mil to 0, we downed him after 19min 21. I believe that when everyone survives this timer should never be achieved.
His aggro range is very small - I suppose it barely exceeds the platform he is standing on. This makes possible to place marks prior to fight that greatly helps during the dance.
Some people mentioned engineering flares already but it's probably best to use Shaman's totems. The advantage comes from possiblity of marking them with normal raid marks (square, star, etc.) so they are easily visible even if cluttered with 25 people.
Just remember to place Posion Cleansing Totem in the middle (at 2nd or 3rd dance spot) if you rely on it to remove Decrepit Fever.
With this help you are, of course, still screwed if you lag but at least you don't have to remember floor patters.
Don't put a raid marker on "someone who knows the fight" and tell newcomers to "follow him." As noted previously, inherent network lag means that people who try this will inevitably die. People have to learn the dance themselves. Talk about the "four quadrants," point them to the flash and other visual illustrations listed here, use flares, etc., but of course true learning will only come by doing.
Thats rubbish because an experaince player would run eariler knowing about the lagg, Even if you run earily and cross the green slime you dont get hit. Its not about waiting still the slime goes befor movies its about moving when the slime appearers you only take the damage once thats the the slime goes up, its a commen mistake to wait till the slime despawns befor moving and thats just wrong.
To sum it up, Move when the slime is due to happen so your running earily and if people are following you the delay won matter too much aslong as there fast to react
Marking somebody works fine, but tell the people to say on top of them not follow them
If you are a caster class with instant spells or have DoTs, and are very experienced at dancing, you can try your hands at DPS Dancing. I learnt this when I got bored whilst on Heigan, I just started using Living Bomb and mouse-turn jumping to cast Fire Blast, then started using spells with a cast time and I just rocketed up the damage done tables. Before you start this, you must be VERY good at dancing, remember landmarks on the slime for every time you dance. Everytime I dance I do it exactly the same way.
At the turn-around in positions 1 and 4, this is a time to cast your longest spell (it must still be under 2s), be it a casting DoT or just a quick damage spell. As a mage, this is the time where I cast scorch to keep up the 10% crit bonus. I know the mechanics of the slime well so I only have to move a yard so I can start casting, if I recently refreshed it, sometimes I even cast a Frostfire bolt, but I like to keep under aggro. While I am running I will keep Living Bomb up, if your class has any spells which you can cast whilst facing any direction, these are the best to practice DPS Dancing.
After the first couple of times I started using Fire Blast too (or you can use any instant damage spell in your repetoire which requires you to face the target), I would jump into the next section, but whilst in the air I will turn myself with my mouse to face the platform, cast the spell, turn back in the correct direction with my mouse again before I land the jump and continue running. This way there is no downtime and I can recast Scorch at each turn-around. It's nice when I get the odd pyroblast from scorch and fire blast too!
Remember, this takes practice and a nearly lagg-free computer. I run on 80FPS and about 30ms in Dalaran at peak hours which most people don't get in the emptiest of places. Unfortunately, this lowers my DPS but I get far more damage done than the next person which ultimately wins the fight if people die.
Good luck and don't over aggro!

Patch 3.0.8 fixed his hiding spot :(
Must dance now.
Definitely fixed. We had no wipes up until Heigan, where we crowded in the corner and got 3 shotted by Heigan. Even though we all died, we had some good laughs at the ninja fix.
was able to 4 man him this morning with some guild members used a paladin tank about 1/3 heroic epic an affliction lock full crafted 10 man naxx epic a holy priest in mostly blues and me (45/5/21 holy spec paladin) all blues with 1 epic
our tank tanked him on the corner of the stage preventing us from having to dance during phase 1( just far enough away from us so we didnt get the debuff)
lock used the fel puppy to steal mana from for a constant supply of mana (was self sustaining life tapped when needed but Haunt gave him all the life he used back)
holy priest healed the tank solo (kept renew up and shielded him when able)
i was dps on the boss (SoW, JoW, Holy Shock, exorcise, concecration, shield of rightousness) tossed a heal when i thought it was needed
phase 2 was where our priest gained mana as there is no dmg taken here so long as u avoid the fire after phase 2 ended me and the priest cured everyones disease tossed a holy shock and holy light to get tank stabalized in the transition we repeated this downed him on our 4 or 5th try the time we did down him the length of the fight was maybe 10-15 mins with no deaths on that attempt
I've seen this boss two manned and it took forever. Holy paladin/Prot warrior took him down from around 40% when the rest of the raid took an eruption to the face.
Just goes to show this fight is all about coordination and dps is the least important factor to downing him.
There's a great guide that shows where the four quarters of the room divide
, and as long as most people in the raid know how to dance hes easy, and if your friends cant dance, then they're no friends of mine.
They fixed the exploit (otherwise known as the safe spot or safe corner) with 3.0.8, so everyone has to dance phase 2 now.
In phase 1, tanks need to be aware of the range of spell disruption. If your healers are standing dead against the wall behind the platform and they're getting the debuff, you're tanking him wrong.
Dancing is pretty easy once you know where the boundaries for the blocks are. In phase 2, if you know what you're doing, you'll stay ahead (but not too far ahead) of the general herd of players attempting to dance. Make sure you don't go too far into blocks 1 & 4 or you'll get hit by eruption and die. Also, don't run too close to the platform because of plague cloud.
Follows this pattern: 123432123432.
Ranged & healers should watch timers for the teleport and move close to the first block before then so that you don't get hit by plague cloud once he starts channeling it. Depending on how fast or slow you and your healers are, you may or may not be able to get heals before having to dance, and this is bad if you get clipped by eruption. Healers who are very familiar with dancing will be able to heal you, but not all healers will necessarily have time. Stepping into blocks 1 & 4 are the easiest moments to cast heals or spells because all you're doing is turning.
easiest boss in naxxramas from what I've experienced. i got a 10 man PUG together this morning.
first attempt we all died in "the dance" right away.
second attempt 7 of us died. other 3 caught on fast i guess.
they 3 manned the whole thing and downed him. he does virtually no damage to tank at all. our healer didnt really waste any mana through out the whole fight. it just took a good 30 minutes with tank 1 dps and 1 healer lol
easy fight as long as you get down "the dance"
it comes in 4 sections. give it a few tries and you'll see how it works and get it down.
THE leetest thing ive seen in wow. i<3jester
Anyone knows if its possible to have his skull head gear ?
It would look so nice at my undead warlock
one imba tank, one imba dps and one imba healer enough to defeat this boss. i saw it.
did that on 10-man...
Has anyone figured out a way of keeping hunters pets alive? I have killed him several times now but because the pet attacks from behind he dies in slime spray very quickly in fight.
Heigan the Clean died.
im just gonna throw this out there out of slight frustration
Its Not That Hard
feel free to downrate this, but i just needed to put it out there
Another example of Blizz's love for pop culture references. Posting this because unbleievably no one else has;
We can dance if we want to
We can leave your friends behind
'Cause your friends don't dance and if they don't dance
Well they're no friends of mine
I say, we can go where we want to
A place where they will never find
And we can act like we come from out of this world
Leave the real one far behind
We can dance, we can dance
Everybody look at your hands
We can dance, we can dance
Everybody takin' the chance
We can go when we want to
The night is young and so am I
And we can dress real neat from our hats to our feet
And surprise 'em with the victory cry
Say, we can act if want to
If we don't nobody will
And you can act real rude and totally removed
And I can act like an imbecile
I say, we can dance, we can dance
Everything out of control
We can dance, we can dance
We're doing it from wall to wall
We can dance, we can dance
Everybody look at your hands
We can dance, we can dance
Everybody takin' the chance
Safety dance -
Is it safe to dance?
Is it safe to dance?
We can dance if we want to
We've got all your life and mine
As long as we abuse it, never gonna lose it
Everything'll work out right
I say, we can dance if we want to
We can leave your friends behind
'Cause your friends don't dance and if they don't dance
Well they're no friends of mine
Is it safe to dance?
My guild was facing wipe after wipe on Heigan, finally we tossed down 4
, one on each zone, and we unlocked
The Safety Dance
that very run. Engineering Flares just don't have the same visibility I guess, specially when half the guild runs the fight on the lowest possible spell detail... : )
For Phase 1 (and only phase 1) you still
can avoid having to do the dance
. As of March 1, 2009 (patch 3.0.8) this still works.
This tactic requires careful positioning by the tank. How I do it is when facing his platform, I pull him to the closest corner to my right. Ranged and healers then go to the far left corner (closest to the pile of dirt from the previous hall). The idea is that by standing at opposite corners, everyone can remain standing on the platform and the ranged/healers will be far enough away to avoid the debuff.
currently does work.
However, the tank needs to be very good at positioning.
Heigan actually needs to stand off the platform in the dance area.
|R | R = Ranged/Healers
| <Platform> | M = Tank/Melee
| M| H = Heigan
In an ideal placement, the tank will be standing where the platform slopes down, but still out of the explosions. Melee stand on the corner and ranged/healers stand as far back as they can in the opposite corner.
This only works for phase 1! Everyone still needs to dance in phase 2, then you repeat this when phase 1 comes around again.
Note: This might not work for gnome casters. Apparently you're so short that if you have to stand on the slope on opposite corner you might not have LOS to Heigan. Sorry 'bout that. =)
For the more adventurous of you, I can confirm that Heigan can be defeated with 5 people on 10man in only heroic/smattering of Naxx10 gear.
Just completed with 2 Paladin tanks, 1 shaman healer, a frost mage, and myself an Unholy Deathknight. Was great fun to do, and proves that with the right tactics (all mostly from the marvellous information provided by the posters above), and a good team, 20 mins of running around will give you a wonderful feeling of satisfaction (and in this case, the no-one died achievement).
Here's a tactic to aid with dancing for less-coordinated groups: bring a Shaman with you, and before the pull, arrange for them to put Totems down on all the safe spots. This way, all one has to do during phase 2 and follow the Totems. It is to my understanding that they are not affected by Heigan's Eruption, and are very visible. Considering most Heigan fights last 6-8 mins, you may have to reset your totems at some point. And leaving them all in one spot ike one does during a tank n' spank doesn't work since you'll be moving all along anyway...may as well give them another use.
hmm the unclean sounds like this guy is a drug dealer
One problem starter groups can encounter on this fight is the massive disease wave that occurs as the phase 2 dance transitions back to phase 1 DPS. Everyone will be grouped up when they're dancing and Heigan can easily drop Decrepit Fever and hit the entire raid (20 yard range effect). Remember that nasty spell hits for seven 3K nature damage ticks on 10 man AND reduces health by 50% (i.e. a toon with 18K health or less will die in 3 ticks). Disease cleansing is critical and makes a Shaman or Priest very useful. Both classes should use the abolish poison spell (or totem) and start casting it on raid members BEFORE the end of the dance. The Abolish poison also ticks and will therefore cleanse most of the party immediately after the fever.
There is no enrage timer on this boss, so as long as the MT, a healer and someone who can dispell the disease can do the dance, you 'll down him.
Every time we do this encounter with my guild on normal, 2-3 people never even reach possision 4 on phase 2, and usually 1-2 more die before re-entering phase 1 ( one of the healers included). But still, it is possible to kill him. Last time we killed him, we 4-manned (resto shaman, enha shaman who died seconds before the kill, feral druid and death knight tank) him from 40%.
As stated above, use whatever you can as a marker: flares, totems, moonstones or even your raid members' corpses. Even in death they can serve and help the rest of the raid :-)
On your first try, you're lost in the instructions after only a few chat entries. You need first hand experience to learn this one. Once you get it, it's immensly fun (!), especially to see ppl run to for their lives, fail and die, while still having a good chance to down the boss with only a fraction of the team still alive, being cheered on by the dead slackers :-).
This was four manned by my group, with two healers and two tanks. Everyone died in the first two dances, leaving myself (pally off tank), Main tank Warrior and two druid healers. In the end, my job was to cleanse diseases over actually contributing any real dps.
My favourite fight, Saftey dance actually fits the rhythm of this fight.
UGGH! dear god! whens was the last time you took a shower heigan? you smell like the living.
Imagine this. Everyone in the raid except a newly heroic geared and 1 heroes set piece, two tanks and healers are dead from 1.3 million HP and out. Eventually, OT dies, and we are stuck with a MT and at that time, a not so good dpser.
You think you got tired of dancing? Took us a great amount of time, but we managed to pull it off.
Remember this, Heigan is fun! Don't miss out on the good stuff.
Everytime I walk into Heigan's hall-way, i feel like
Its all in the hips, its all in the hips :P
This is a easy boss if you dont have retards.
The guy doesnt have an enrage timer and if he does its long as hell because my guild has 3 manned it for the hell of it on heroic. one tank two healers. 42 minute fight.
On My server (this happened 3 times in a row) we got down to 3 druids 1 tank and 2 resto the rest of us were dead we spent maybe an hour and a half with 2 druids healing and the tank pulling on that last try we got him to 9000 hp our tank died and he killed the healers... The last pull took about 40 mins
lmao, did this guy on 25 man and ended up 6 manning it from 60% to 0, me being a mage at the end of the fight did 2 million dmg =P
Lag is the hardest part of this fight
This fight is nearly impossible to stay alive unless you know what you are doing. Everyone in the raid
has to stay alive
unless they want the fight to last a long, long time. For example, my guild's first run through naxx was stopped nearly every time we went through untill our two tanks and a healer were left. The fight went on for
48 min 20 sec
according to DBM's timer. The ordeal was unbelievable, and unless you want this to happen to you, have your guild or pugs be able to know the zones well enough not to die.
A simple, flash friendly version of the zones is found
Ahhh the good old Heigan shuffle or Heigan step whichever you prefer.
P.S this is mine if you hear anyone say it they stole it from me or heard it from me.
Easy way to learn the fight if you're having problems with it is to go in after he is downed. (after raid is over) All the trash leading up to him will be cleared and the room he was in will be clear so you can practice the dance with someone who knows it.
First defeated by Risen of Alleria on the 3rd of July, 2006.
I was told by a guildie to "run for the sparkles." The sparkles of course being whats left over after the lava/slime/sludge/plague comes up, it shoots; you guessed it, sparkles into the air.
One more thing, let it be noted that the
plague only hurts on the way up, not on the way down.
This boss is actually tons of fun (for me anyway) if you can learn how to do the dance right. Today I was in a group for 10-man and
people died. Just me healing, the tank, and a melee dps were alive with Heigan at only about 60-70% HP. We downed him successfully because the 3 of us knew where to go and what to do independent of each other.
This was my very first time in Naxx and two times I died trying to get this dance down -- well, not really. What I was doing was trying to follow our tank like a shadow. Our tank explained it to me and I didn't pay attention because I thought I could just follow the crowd...
DO NOT TRY TO FOLLOW ALONG. YOU HAVE TO LEARN IT AND KNOW IT YOURSELF.
Once I stopped trying to follow the tank and took his advice about where to go, I did not take
damage during the dance. Listen to what people are telling you or pay close attention to your videos and try to replicate what they are doing and where they are standing
so you know what you are doing and where to go to be safe. Start moving right after the explosions of slime to the next area and you will do just fine.
I had tons of fun on this fight after I learned the dance. After that, it's cake. So to anyone who is having trouble with this, just watch a video or ask somebody. Don't be embarrassed because there are plenty of people who have done this fight many times and still die even during the first dance. Good luck. :)
Just soloed it on my paladin. I'm so OP right now. :D
I thought it would be funny to stand in the poison and heal through the damage. It was. I survived, and surprisingly it was very easy too.
It is very fun linking damage received meters and coming on top as a healer ;)
I did this on a druid, if you have done this as another healing class please post. I'd imagine a pally can easily do it too.
he has a special ability called UNCLEAN! description you are always sick! thats where his name comes from Unclean hes always sick
Soloed on 10 man a protection paladin. 5236 gear score with the 4 piece t9 set bonus.(Don't think it is needed, But I made sure to pop Divine Protection after every dance phase) Took 87minutes to down him at 972dps.
I tanked him where he stands during phase 1 and dance during phase 2. The Decrepit Fever must be cleased asap. Make sure to keep up Seal and Judgement of Light. Also make sure to keep up Divine Plea, Sacred Shield, and Blessing of Sanc. I didn't use consecration due to its high cost in mana. If you do all of that you should be able to solo him as long as you can dance. Only way I could get the safety dance achievement was by doing it myself.
How hard does he melee?
Note- attempting solo on 25 man this saturday, wish me luck.
Edit- Forgot about this post, tried it that saturday and got facerolled, I'll be back with more news on lock soloing Heigan in cataclysm.
Edit- It's cataclysm now and he was a joke.
I wonder how many undead girls he's gotten pregnant.
Definitely possible to solo as a prot pally.
Keep up judgement and seal of light at all times.
Be unhitteable with holy shield (very useful).
Learn to dance well.
DISPEL THE DISEASE! It hurts and will probably kill you if you don't.
Keep up divine plea for mana. Stop using consecrate and any other mana intense abilites if you get low.
Took about 45 minutes.
This boss may be named after the famous serial killer known as
who tried to hide evidence of his crimes by dissolving his victims bodies in acid, just like Heigan tries to do in the encounter.
This IS 2-manable! Did it on my balance druid along with tankadin from about 80% (rest of the raid had died there already. Didn't catch it on video as it was a pure coincidence (I didn't wanna pay for repairs!)
All you need really is a tank and a healer and at least 1 of them should be able to cure diseases.
As said, druid and pally is the most obvious combo because of druids HoTs and pallys cleanse, but a priest or pally (dunno about shaman?) healer could do it with any tank as well.
I would almost go as far as to say that a really good pally could solo him, certainly at lvl 85 - but you'd have to have your gear maxed and really know how to play your class.
wowhead states "Heigan the Unclean features the famous "Heigan dance", which is the only real danger of the fight.".
This is not entirely true. By now, ambitious raiders storming into Naxx face a second danger that starts before the pull. As the highly geared PUG enters his room, someone will usually begin talking about "the safe spot", and how they raid should use it, so they don't have to do the difficult slow dance phase.
Whether or not it is an exploit, it can mean a smooth fight if the tank knows how to exploit it, but more often than not, the healers will get spell disruptions (boss too close) or get LoSed (tank on the ledge of the platform, or healers on the ledge of the platform), or the tank gets hit by three out of four eruption anyway, because they are not at the right spot. As the ranged DPS with magic are affected by the spell disruptions as well, the fast dance phase will inevitably start. At this point most will die, and those that have done it before and survive usually aren't the winning combination of tank+healer that you need.
In a lot of cases, you will get much fewer deaths if people just do the slow dance phase. Ranged DPS stays high, damage is minimal and the timer on the slow dance phase is more than generous. Anyone who dies to it would very likely die on the fast dance phase anyway, and not having spell disruptions increases your chance of success unless you are
sure the tank knows how to position Heigan.
Just solo'd on 85 Heroic-Geared Prot Pally. Stay alive and dance the dance, and it's easy -- after a 20-minute fight, that is...
I just personally don't find any reason to actually call yourself, "The Unclean". I mean, if I could choose a title for myself; The Undefeatable... The Destroy of Worlds... - But The Unclean? "I am Heigan... THE UNCLEAN!" Atleast it's orginal.
I just have to say this, even though it's painfully obvious.
If you're soloing it, just do it on the platform for "phase 1"- Really, don't be an idiot and make more hassle for yourself dancing.
(I do realise the poison does hardly any damage even if you DO get hit, but that isn't really the point, slacking is pro kthx.)
When I last did this in 3.3.5 (with a raid) we had an easy time, in phase 1 healers and ranged stood on a safe spot, tank tanked him on the edge of the platform, melee killed him, phase 2 everyone ran to said safe spot, ranged attacked, no one got hit. Not sure if those still work, but yea, there's was a spot impervious to the AOE/slime in Phase 2.
EDIT: If quadrant one is the one next to the door, the spot is about between quadrants there and four., with four being next to the "entrance" for the hallway which leads to Loatheb.
Easily soloable as a BM hunter.
Used a spirit beast to tank it, so I could heal myself in case of failing at the dance.
When I was on the platform, I didn't bother to move my pet at all. Just keep mend pet up and you should be fine (no T5 used).
Blood DK? Solo this?
During P1: Just smash face, Death Strike, yadda-yadda.
P2: Don't worry about the dance, but get off his platform- the AoE up there hurts a lot more than the splashing damage below.
This encounter was soloable back at 80. It's a joke now.
Solo'd 25 man Heigan last week as an MM hunter with a cat tanking it. I used a 9/32/0 spec with 369 ilvl gear. However, any of the three specs should work fine for this. I kept my 2 piece T5 on hand, but didn't need it.
My pet tanked him up on the platform while I stayed out and danced for both phases. My attempts to DPS on the platform with my pet always ended very quickly in disaster as I was getting hit non-stop with
- hence why I opted to dance. I kept Mend Pet up on my cat the whole time which also removed the disease from him (due to 2 pts in Improved Mend Pet). Just in case I had bad RNG and the disease didn't get removed, I had spec'ed into Lick Your Wounds and Heart of the Phoenix (which I did happen on a few attempts). I killed him on my 4th try. The fight took 11:11 minutes.
Luckily, after farming Naxx back in WotLK, I still remembered where to stand, but even if you don't know, you learn quickly! If you can visually divide the room into 4 slices, it's extremely obvious where to stand. Getting hit just makes things that more difficult. There are many guides out there, so take a good look at them, but nothing learns you faster than jumping in and screwing up a few times. I kept Aspect of the Hawk on during the slow dance (phase 1) and Aspect of the Fox during the fast dance (phase 2). Strafing is your friend and will allow you to continuously DPS. Despite Plague Cloud, I had no trouble keeping my cat up on the platform during phase 2.
I'd imagine that 10 man is much the same, but with less incoming damage!
Soloing is an extremely easy way to get
The Safety Dance (10 player)
The Safety Dance (25 player)
, so happy achievement hunting!
How to solo as a Paladin:
I hope it helps :)
Is Heigan's gear anywhere in the game? (for transmog)
Hunter soloed him in 10man and 25 man. Got Safety Dance in both. 17min fight in 25 man. If you clear trash in 10 man it respawns when you switch it over. So you can get more loot but why bother. Found that anything but a Turtle died too easy with this boss. Needed its 50% less damage shell skill. Since he cuts health in half during the fight. This was shortly after 4.01.
25 man -
10 man -
solo by ugeared sp
Gothik the Harvester and Heigan the Unclean Must be bros.
Pathetic boss, 336 dps item level soloed on my blood dk, just stood on the platform, ignored tactics, used ams and healing cds during the phase in which he channels his spell and does magical damage, and icebound fortitude during the phase in which I had my hp halved.
At 25 I tried at 386, always dps gear, and was still a first try; I'm sure it could be done with way less gear, probably 360, he just hits a bit harder, but tank and spank still and most likely no enrage at all.
Really laughed when I got the achievements, on both versions, "the safety dance", more like "standing dance", lol.
Hunter Solo Guide/Advice
( Here's a link to the video of me soloing this on my hunter:
A nice easy solo. Make sure you're specced into improved mend pet in the beast mastery tree in order to dispel the disease put on your pet whilst it is tanking which reduces it's hp by 50%. Keep up Mend Pet throught the fight and be sure to recast it when your pet get's debuffed with said disease.
As always, don't forget to take a Tenacity pet and spec into everything tanklike in the talent tree and take Glyph of Mend Pet + Misdirection as they're a must for any solo encounter.
Start the encounter by putting your pet on passive and then getting it to move to the point(roughly) where I put my pet. Once Heigan's at your pet, your pet is free to attack. Make sure when you're stood atop the platform that you're as far away from Heigan as possible in order to prevent the casting speed reduction debuff from being applied to you.
When the safety dance phase comes in, execute a flawless safety dance in order to get the achievement as your pet being hit by the poison coming from the floor does not fail the achievement for you. Put on aspect of the fox and let your pet attack heigan atop the platform.
Once the safety dance phase is over be sure to put your pet back in the original position it was in before starting the fight. Then, rinse and repeat!
Heigan should go down after the first safety dance phase if your dps is above 12k!
Good luck and happy soloing!
A quick warning. I just wiped on Heigan while soloing, ran back in and the door was still blocked off as it is mid-encounter. Hopefully it's fixed soon but bare it in mind.
Just soloed as a 90 Guardian Druid, ilvl462 - the fight, at least for solo players, is a simple tank and spank on the platform he starts out on.
Soloed this with my 85 blood DK in Cataclysm dungeon and rep gear. When this video was made you had to do the dance but now apparently you can stay on the platform during the dance phase.
Here's the video:
Easily solo'd 25-man as ilvl509 Assassination Rogue. (If it made any difference I stayed on the platform!)
It's a shame they never gave him a voice.
