Gehennas - The second of four reptile bosses in Molten Core. This is where you should be getting your second hand for the Hydraxian quest series. Below is a generalized strategy:
Create groups identical to how you had them for Lucifron. If Lucifron could be considered an affliction warlock then Gehennas is a destruction warlock.
Gehennas Abilities:
- Rain of Fire - Just stay away from these
- Shadowbolt - Randomly shoots shadowbolts
- Gehennas' Curse - Reduces healing by 75% for 5 min
Add Abilities:
- Fist of Ragnaros - 4 second stun - Tanks can trink out as they like to use this as their first attack.
- Sunder Armor - yep, they sunder
Fight this near identical to the way you do Lucifron. Keep the main tank group up front, away from the main group, while you burn the adds down. A decurser is needed with the Main Tank due to the debuff. This assists in keeping as many people as possible out of the rain of fire. Occasionally Gehennas will drop rain of fire directly on top of himself. Just move him out of it. It's a rather strahgtforward fight.
Note: if you're slow setting up and/or killing Gehennas there is a lava surger that is on a fast respawn timer that will pop and aggro. Just get a warlock to keep it banished until Gehennas dies.
Fun For Warlocks: If your guild has this boss of auto-pilot throw your own rain of fire into the mix for some extra fun. For those in the know it'll be a break in the monotony and get you a few laughs.

Gehenna means hell

If attempting to do Gehennas with only a few players, here are some notes:
- The curse on this boss is very severe as it reduces all healing by 75%. If you don't have a mage or druid with you, you need to have a very, very high amount of DPS to kill the boss before your healer runs out of mana.
- Stay out of fire, especially without a decurser.
- The adds can stun people, and if they happen to be in the Rain of Fire when that happens and you don't have a decurse, that's bad. So kill the adds first.

I just soloed Gehennas as a Protection Paladin.
What I did was equip the Black Temple Shadow Resist gear so I went up to 450 SR(with aura).
His damage is mostly from his Shadow Bolts(61% wearing SR) so equipping Shadow Resistance gear will mitigate the biggest threat. This also helps against his curse which will have a chance to get resisted making your seal healing that much more effective longer into the fight.
The other damage he does is his Rain of Fire, which you must move out of ASAP.
Melee damage from both him and his adds should be all blocked aside from when you get stunned from the adds. This dmg is very low anyway and not much of a threat.
Now the way I fought him was I had SoL/JoL up and went to town on Gehennas while keeping SS up at all times. I left the adds to get killed by my holy shield and HotR. I strafed almost the whole fight just back and forth towards the lava. Due to the movement of the fight I'd recommend clearing the mob close to the lava(pulled this and missed out on an easy kill with RNG on curse resist on my side) and the mob next to Gehennas(pulled him in the kill but only annihilator thankfully).
When I got low on hp I made sure I was at full mana(pop SoW/JoW if DP aint enough) and then just before I died I popped DS and healed myself to full hp. Then it all started again and rinse and repeat.
Sadly it takes him less than 4 minutes to get through my hp so what I did was when I was starting to get low I popped Restorative Potion. The effect from the potion doesn't come into play right away but aslong as you aren't incredibly unlucky you will loose the curse at some timepoint, and that is when you quickly pop LoH on yourself.
By this point the adds should be close to dead, but no matter just keep nailing Gehennas. Divine Shield will be up soon so if you are getting hammered and get low on hp you can DS again and heal up(make sure again you're high on mana to fully heal). By this timepoint he should be pretty close to death so finish him off :)
Edit: After 3.1 this is very easy, just run SoL/JoL and go to town while keeping DP up. You still have to SS and run out of fire, but you can use all your abilities and never have serious mana problems. Also a trick to use is when the adds are killed, it can help to pull 2-3 Lava Annihilators to make sure you don't have to watch your blue bar. They don't pose any threat what-so-ever(after adds are dead anyway).

it's hard as bear.. i manage to kill both adds but boss alone is tough, even with topped shadow res the shadow bolt hits very hard and makes 60% of his damage output. hard to heal as well because standing in one place - getting owned by fire rain. it's just one big rng game, and with so long fight you're bound to get screwed at some point.

as a DK I've soloed 7 of 8 bosses required to make domo spawn, Gehennas being the only one I can't beat. as soon as the curse is on me it quickly goes downhill. bit of a letdown.
I piled on the SR and had a couple good attempts but didn't get the kill. only way I could see myself killing him is if I got really lucky and resisted a lot of curses.

I actually managed to solo it on my DK, did it with a 27/5/39 spec, dps and SR gear, and a Purification potion. Pop Army to kill adds quickly, try to survive as long as possible after getting a curse with cooldowns and gimped healing, then use Purification potion (only get to use one), heal to full, and hopefully if you move out of aoe quickly, you'll succeed even if you get cursed a second time.

FERAL DRUIDS LOOKING TO SOLO:
This is one heck of a fight. But I'm sure from getting your behind kicked a few times, you know that already. So here's what I did, and what I suggest you do...
No special fire resist is needed on this fight, a lot of his damage is physical and shadow anyways. Chug a Lesser Flask of Resistance if you want, not dire by any means however. You're going to need, or at least what I needed, is about 25% healing gear, 75% feral tanking gear (EDIT: This was written back when I had Ulduar and some ToC gear. You can do this in feral dps gear if it's at an average of 232+ level). Swap out your worst feral pieces for better healing pieces when needed. I have the two new Ony trinkets, so I used those.
Now, before you do any healing, you need to take out the adds. Bear form, go to town, pop cooldowns to burst them down, and you're probably going to need Survival Instinct. If you're cursed, you don't want to waste Frenzied Regen. Shifting while the two adds are up is also risky. One stun, and even barkskin won't help.
Once the adds down, you're left with Gehennas. Keep moving him, move out of the rain of fire, you don't need extra damage. Decurse whenever it's up, and toss a small heal before getting back in form. If you need a boos, swap to some healing weaponry, remove curse, rejuv remove curse, barkskin>regrowth, whatever, heal yourself and get back to bear form ASAP. Now whenever you're cursed again, get your staff on, remove, rejuv, re-bear, re-feral-staff.
Edit: Once the adds are down, you can probably do this fight in cat form, utilizing predator's swiftness for heals. Decurse, insta-regrowth, rejuv, back to cat.
As for consumables, I just stick to Runic Healing when there's an "o shi-" moment.
As for my gear level, it averages around ilevel 226. I have some difficulty with this fight, but mostly only if I get an unlucky stun.

Managed to solo him as a paladin, in my
0/27/44
spec, which I've discussed in detail
here
. I went "defensive", i.e. SoL, BoSanct, and 1h+shield. Shadow Aura.
The thing to do is to constantly use insta-cast FoL when it's up, all the time. It has absolute top priority to FoL over any other spell. Even though it only heals for something like 600-700, it adds up and keeps you somewhat alive, along with SoL and JoL procs.
I kept moving backwards as I fought, and killed his adds first, as their stun is annoying. At some point, I used Divine Shield, healed to full, and then kept on fighting until I got low again, used LoH (only healed for ~6k but better than nothing), used DP, kept on fighting until Divine Shield was up again, used it, healed, and so forth until he dropped after about 8 minutes.
He was definitely the most challenging MC boss to solo.
Edit: Did him as pure retribution this week, all dps buffs except I used Seal of Light. Was much faster and just as hard/easy as with the ret/prot hybrid build.

Soloed it as a level 80 affliction warlock. Not using the trick with demonic circle. ;)
The important thing is to always stand out of range of Gehennas' Curse debuff. Fortunately, health funnel has the very same range. =) Used my felpuppy to tank the boss, keeping him up all the time. The two adds came after me as I started healing my pet, so I just dotted them both up and drained life all the while keeping an eye on my felhunter's health. This is the only tricky part of the fight, keeping yourself alive until you kill the adds.
The boss itself is easy, but it took me some time due to the fact that I had to stay out of his range the entire time, so I couldn't cast any spells at all. Just funneled my doggy until he meleed him down.
If you're feeling brave enough like me you can try to burn him down at about 25% before he burns you down. ;)
Next up - Garr. =)

Everyone is talking about soloing him, but I tried something else. I got my best friend and we handled him very nicely. I'm a fury warrior and he's a resto druid. It was fairly easy as long as I stayed out of the rain of fires. If you're bent on soloing, then my post is a waste of your time, but if you're just nastalgic for MC and want to do it, grab a budy and get to it! Me and my friend successfully killed Rag.

Successfully soloed as DK tank in cookie cutter blood tank spec. No too fancy items were used, only items easily crafted or bought from the AH.
First, get your hands on some flasks and pots to ease the kill, you want as much magic resistance as possible to resist shadowbolts/rain of fire and possibly even his curse:
Magic Resistance Potion
Lesser Flask of Resistance
Restorative Potion
(note that I killed it without this potion, which probably is the hands down most useful pot for this encounter)
Before going any further, I advise any DK tank trying this out to leave one add up, as your
Rune Strikes
will and should be either top or 2nd damage ability, and the adds are the sole provider of dodge and parry. Mind you, I was human killing Gehennas, so
Every Man for Himself
came in handy a couple tries when an add stunned me (I would imagine any race to prefer using
Rune Strikes
in tank spec though, as the damage is much needed). Make sure you have RS macroed.
Also worth noting,
Death Strike
heals for a fixed % of your hp, so any means uping your health is good. I used my usual tank gear (ICC 10/25m and TotGC25m), and used
Bubbling Brightbrew Charm
and
Satrina's Impeding Scarab
to maximize health. I also run Frost Presence of the same reason.
I'll be going through a strat I'd use having some
Restorative Potions
at hand, even if I didn't have these (I would imagine having these pots at hand would greatly diminish the need of gear of the same level I used as well). Assuming the effects of the potions stack:
Before pull
After clearing wandering hounds, surgers and whatever else you want out of the way (space is good, but not key to getting a kill), you can set the fight up optimally before pulling. As many has noted, magic resistance is vital. Pop a
Lesser Flask of Resistance
and
Magic Resistance Potion
and wait for the potion cooldown to wear off. With a few seconds on the potion cooldown start channeling your army, and pop a
Restorative Potion
right before entering combat to once again trigger potion cooldown timer
During combat
Do your usual single target rotations on one of the adds (the army must target the same add) and kill it before the army dies. Also pop AMS a few seconds after pull as I found him to cast the first curse at that point if you're not using Restorative Potions. Now it's a dps/survival race toward a kill. Make sure to move out of all AoE and have Gehennas targeted. You can skip pestilence all together once the first add is down. Death Strike has prio, and use cooldowns on rotation and as soon as they get ready preferably. I used a macro that warns me that I want to use
Death Pact
but not sacrificing the pet too early, to get a little more damage.:
/cast Raise Dead
/in 45 /say 15s until Ghoul expires!I would raise my ghould some ~30s into the fight to have it up for some time and have the possibility of a timely sacrifice. I'd blow any trinkets I have + VB, especially if you have the curse on you at this point, whenever my AMS and IBF has dissipated and are on cooldown. From now on, the add will provide you with dodges/parries so you can Rune Strike away, which is the sole purpose of leaving one add alive.
Blood Tap
(glyphed) on cd and
ERW
should be used as well. After a certain time (~1 min) after engaging you'll have your potion cooldown ready, which should be used for another
Restorative Potion
, preferably when your VB is raedy for use and you can Death Strike a few times to quickly up your health. I would make sure Death Pact is used rather too early than too late, so if you're curse gets cleansed by your potion, I would make sure I could sacrifice pet having VB up. As stated I didn't use any Restorative Potions killing Gehennas, so I used another
Magic Resistance Potion
instead when the first one wore off.
That's about it. Just as a reference, my kill (incl last add) took 2:59, and ended up with ~5.5k hp left. I had 44.7k hp unbuffed and no external buffs except the consumables mentioned, excluding Restorative Potions. Used all survivability cooldowns except Death Pact and trinkets multiple times. I had the curse on me after about 10s after pull until Gehennas died.

I just soloed him as a protection paladin as well. This fight has become harder to solo since Lay on Hands now gives the
Forbearance
debuff as of patch 3.3.2. All of the previous information is still very helpful, but you'll do much better if you bring along a
Purification Potion
. I would recommend creating a macro such as this:
/cancelaura Divine Plea
/use Purification Potion
/cast Lay on Hands
Juggling your Forbearance debuffs you'll be getting and surviving through the
Ardent Defender
debuff is really the key to this fight as a protection paladin. Try to take the adds out first, as their stun makes it harder to escape the Rain of Fire AOE the boss casts.
I'd start the fight with an early
Divine Protection
just to keep the initial damage to a minimum. This will help your seal and judgement keep you nearly topped off.
The next cooldown you'll want to use is
Divine Shield
. Try and make sure you're at full mana when this time comes. The best time to use this is after your Ardent Defender procs, and you are nearly dead. With some luck, you won't be near death until your Ardent Defender debuff wears off again, which will give you some breathing room with your cooldowns. When you do use your bubble, cancel your
Divine Plea
and heal to full.
At this point, it's just rinse and repeat as far as waiting for Ardent Defender procs and your bubble to come off of cooldown. You may want to avoid using
Divine Protection
after the first time, you might wanna save your Forbearance debuff for something better. I cut it close a couple times having to wait for the debuff to go away.
If you find yourself on the verge of dying before your
Divine Shield
comes off of cooldown,
make sure your Divine Plea buff is canceled before you use the Purification Potion and Lay on Hands.
Don't make the same noob mistake I did the first time I tried (-.-) Even if you do noob it up like I did, you should be just fine for the rest of the fight.
Good luck, and be sure to bring a back-up weapon or two if you're full clearing the place, as my sword decided to break halfway through my 30 minute fight with Ragnaros. This is by far the most difficult fight to solo, and if you can pull this one off, you'll be good on the rest of them.

tried as an enhn shammy....not possible unless you have insane SR gear and you resist his curse. Also tried as resto so I could decurse myself but my gear wasnt up to par and I found myself healing all the time instead of doing dmg.
If you have really good healing gear this fight seems do-able but until then...just skip him and move on to garr

No problems in today's gear (mostly 264) as a feral druid,
Berzerk mangle right off the bat should be enough to get his adds down, then just tank n spank and blow your frenzied regen when you hit about 50% health (making sure to pop out and cast decurse twice - once to remove the healing nerf curse and a second time to remove the instant recurse he does before you do it).

Gehennas has been a major roadblock in soloing MC for a while for me. Today I finally managed it with a Blood/Unholy Hybrid spec (designed for maximum healing while soloing), so thought I'd write some tips.
The spec used was Raegwyn's 28/0/43 soloing spec, and my gear was mainly i232 tanking pieces with 2 Shadesteel pieces from Black Temple. If you have access to all 4, it would make the fight considerably easier.
I also used Drums of Forgotten Kings and Drums of the Wild and a Flask of Lesser Resistance, for a total of 198 Shadow Resistance and 104 Fire Resistance.
I didn't use any potions. The Kings drum is probably not necessary, but 8% Stam is quite a lot more healing if you want to play it safe.
First of all, I sent in my ghoul to attack Gehennas and pulled the adds about 40 yards away. It managed to tank him until one add was dead, then aggro from my Death Strikes pulled the boss to me. The second add was nuked as quickly as possible, while I kited Gehennas in a large circle to avoid Rain of Fire.
After both adds are dead, the fight is incredibly easy. Just remember to rotate your CDs and spam the hell out of Death Strike; even when its reduced by 75% it can outheal most of his damage.
The fight ended with me on about 80% HP. I was under no risk of dying at any point.

Soloed as Holy Paladin, after few unsuccessful tries with Ret. Mostly 264 gear, Seal of Wisdom (glyphed), shadow res aura.
It's easy enough, just keep Sacred Shield up and don't stand in his aoe. I used Holy Shock for dps and healed mostly with instant FoLs. Kill adds first as the stun is annoying. It took me about 15 minutes, longer than, for example Geddon, as there is some movement involved and consecration is mostly wasted.
Update: after upgrading some of my Ret gear I managed to solo with this spec as well. I nuked adds down with SoC and switched to SoL as the damage started to overwhelm me. No big deal any more.

Soloed him as an 80 Shadow Priest, 5689 GS.
Straight up pretty near impossible, due to his healing disabling curse. But I found a nice workaround that was able to let me down him.
First step is to set the stage. Remove all the random adds in between and near the river of magma near Gehennas. You will need this area clear, because this is going to be a mobile fight.
Second step is getting rid of his adds. Choose an add, summon your shadowfiend on it (so all the aggro/stun spam goes initially to your fiend, and light up the first add. When the aggro comes towards you, spam devouring plague on the add while running towards the lava river. You should have the add down, or nearly down, by the time you reach the river.
Third step is to start the pathing fun. Gehennas, being a salamander mob, can swim, unlike all the elementals and corehounds in the area. This means that you can jump into the river for a break from ole Gehenny. The lava does trivial dps, and is far more forgiving than he and his adds, and this is a great way to break the sunder armor debuff his adds stack on you.
Fourth is to recover. You can still heal through the curse enough to top yourself off. Gehennas will either come at you from the side towards the entrance, or he will come from Ragnaro's room. Both ways give you enough time to recover.
Fifth, redot him and the other add, and begin working on killing the other add. As soon as you become uncomfortable with the damage, you have an out. Basically in between Gehennas' starting location and Ragnaro's room (not in Rag's room itself), there's a little lip of the ledge, tucked right in the corner, that you can jump up. Gehennas, however, cannot. This means he'll go running over into Ragnaro's room and come back up and around to get you. Once again, heal yourself, reapply dots, and jump back into the river at your leisure.
Once the other add is down, and the sunder armor stacks are gone, Gehennas himself isn't that big a deal, and you can stay out of the river from that point if you care to. DPS until he and his overpowered curse are munching floor.

Just soloed as an enhancement shaman. By far the most annoying and hardest boss. Kick everything you have, especially fire resistance totem, fire elemental, ghost wolves and heroism.
You have to nuke him as fast as possible because his damage could be overwhelming. Use your shamanistic rage when your wolves die and keep your maelstrom for insta healing, and ONLY for that.
In the end I died but the boss was dead and his adds where alive. Just revived and killed them smoothly.
It's a DPS race.

I managed to solo this as a warrior with bloodthirst/prot hybrid spec. I used the same consumables as coffin, and used them in the same order. I used my ordinary protection gear except for the 232+245 onyxia resistance rings. Killed the adds first with one more restorative potion still available. With the adds down you do not need to worry about the annoying stuns anymore. I tried first with a high shadow resistance set, but even though I resisted most of his curses I still didn't manage to kill him. You need to find a good balance between staying alive and doing damage.
Edit: Some classes might be able to burst him down if they pop all cooldowns.

ok, i struggled alot on this one for a few weeks as a Deathknight,
I ended up trying to go full dps on while my army keeps the adds bussy.
First try i got him to 30k before i died.
Next try i killed him with 5% hp left, i was full frost dualwield spec my gear is not that important, but i had 8k dps on him, So i think if u had trubble taking him as tank like i did, try this instead, or potions like menctiond above.

As an update (for 4.0.1 anyway), I was able to solo him and his adds as a prot pally. I tried it just tanking him where he was and trying to burn his adds and him fast enough so that he doesn't kill me (bubbling and healing up when I got low) but that didn't work. So I read what people wrote here. After another try I got him down-- what I did was I cleared the area so I could kite out of rain of fire (that really hurts), and buffed myself with:
resistance aura
(the new all-in-one aura),
blessing of might
,
seal of truth
(the new seal of vengeance). Seal of light is not going to help, I tried it with that and kings and it just wasn't enough dps.
So, clear the area, buff yourself, kite them and spam
hammer of the righteous
(and REMEMBER to use
word of glory
when you have 3 charges of holy power) until the adds are down, and then continue kiting Gehennas but spam
crusader strike
instead (our single target attack), continuing to use word of glory when you get 3 charges. Use
ardent defender
if you get low, and then after that use bubble and heal yourself, at this point (for me) he was at about 35%. Once you get him low enough, hammer of wrath every cd will help a lot.
If you have dps trinkets on you (I didn't :s), equip those--pure stam trinkets won't help you too much. I had my corroded skeleton key and the dark brewfest trinket (for absorb and 'smiting my foes', respectively) but I didn't use either of them as I was too concerned with getting to word of glory as fast as possible while kiting.. I didn't bother waiting until he cast rain of fire, I just kept moving in a circle in the area in front of his little den.
Also don't forget to judge and use holy wrath/avenger's shield in between HotR/crusader strike. Use every GCD (I shouldn't have to tell you that), and remember that word of glory DOES help, however small. I like to only use it when I have 3 charges of holy power though.
Edit - oh, and
divine protection
-- as it doesn't give you the forbearance debuff as of patch 4.0, use this freely :)

Just did my weekly MC solo run and when I did Ghennas, I didn't get hit once with Curse of Ghennas. I got spammed with Sunders and Fist of Ragnaros, but no Curse.
Don't know if it's been removed or I got lottery lucky but I've done MC many, many times and have never gone more than 30 seconds into the fight without getting hit with the curse much less the minute 40 it took me to get the kill. So it's possible it's been removed or is just bugged ATM.
As a prot pally not having to deal with the curse made the fight very trivial.
Edit: Have done the fight several more times (one more run and I'm done with the place. YAY!) and have had several more fights without a curse, but have had several that have. Probably just a minor bug like Grauf sometimes not casting his breath. Nice when it happens, but not something you can count on.
