World of Warcraft: Dragonflight
takes us back to Azeroth where we will explore the much-anticipated Dragon Isles. Key to this story will be the dragons themselves, the Aspects and their flights, who have a long and fascinating history in the World of Warcraft universe already. We thought it might be fun to put together a few reading lists for anyone who would like to prepare for the new expansion by researching some dragon lore.
Short Stories
If you just want a couple of quick reads to brush up your dragon lore, the following short stories are for you.
Charge of the Aspects
Charge of the Aspects
is a short story by Matt Burns, published to the World of Warcraft website. It was released during the events of Cataclysm, shortly before patch 4.3.0, and focuses on the decisions made, by the Aspects, to go back in time to retrieve the Dragon Soul for use against Deathwing. Nozdormu's anxieties about the Infinite Dragonflight and his destiny as their leader plays a major role in this story - a subject that
Steve Danuser already confirmed
will still be bothering the Bronze Dragon Aspect in Dragonflight.

Visage Day
Visage Day
is a short story by Steve Danuser that can be found in
Folks and Fairy Tales of Azeroth
. The story follows Chronormu, the Bronze Dragon, as he prepares for the important ceremony known as Visage Day - where dragons decide on the mortal form they will take. Eventually, Chronormu settles on the form of a female gnome, becoming Chromie as we know her today.

Books
For longer reads that helped to establish World of Warcraft's dragon lore as we know it, you may want to check out some of these books.
Dawn of the Aspects
Dawn of the Aspects
is a novel by Richard A. Knaak, an author whose name has come to go hand in hand with World of Warcraft's dragon lore. Set soon after the events of Cataclysm, this book follows the Dragon Aspects as struggle to come to terms with the loss of their powers.
Through the use of several flashbacks, this story also covers the time before the Aspects were given their powers - while they were still proto-dragons and facing their first, great threat: Galakrond.

Thrall: Twilight of the Aspects
A novel by Christie Golden,
Thrall: Twilight of the Aspects
is set during the events of Cataclysm. As suggested by the title, this novel deals with events that would eventually lead to the Dragon Aspects losing most of their powers. This novel should be of particular interest to anyone interested in the prophecies about the Hour of Twilight, Nozdormu's destined transformation into Murozond, leader of the Infinite Dragonflight, and about Chromatus and the chromatic dragonflight.

War of the Ancients
The
War of the Ancients
series is a trilogy of books which covers the first war between the Burning Legion and Azeroth - which ultimately led to the destruction of the Well of Eternity and the Great Sundering of the World - the event that we see calling the Dragon Aspects away from the Dragon Isles in the Dragonflight cinematic trailer.
While the main characters of this story are Night Elves such as Malfurion and Stormrage and Tyrande Whisperwind, the Dragon Aspects played a major role in this war. In this story, we see how they came to form the Dragon Soul, and how Neltharion became Deathwing.

Day of the Dragon & Night of the Dragon
Day of the Dragon
is a novel by Richard A. Knaak set soon after the events of the Second War. This novel deals with the release of Alexstrasza from her enslavement by the Dragonmaw clan - who used the Demon Soul to hold the Dragon Aspect captive so that they could force her to birth red dragons for their mounts.
Night of the Dragon
is the follow up novel, and it deals with the events leading up to Wrath of the Lich King, such as the creation of the Twilight Dragonflight.
Day of the Dragon Night of the Dragon
Beyond the Dark Portal
Beyond the Dark Portal
is a novel by Aaron Rosenberg and Christie Golden that follows the Alliance expedition that included Khadgar, Turalyon and Alleria Windrunner as they ventured through the Dark Portal into Draenor. Deathwing and the Black Dragonflight play an especially important role in this story.

World of Warcraft: Chronicle Series
The
World of Warcraft: Chronicle
series are three books which cover the history of the World of Warcraft universe from the creation of the universe up until the events of
Cataclysm
. While dragon lore isn't the only focus of these lore books, important information about the dragonflights can be found throught all three volumes.
As the first volume mostly covers ancient history, it details information about primordial Azeroth, the Elemental Lords, and the creation of the Dragon Aspects, as well as Deathwing's betrayal and the formation of the Dragon Soul - later the Demon Soul.
The second volume covers the events of the First and Second Wars, including Deathwing and the Demon Soul's involvement and the binding of Alexstrasza.
Finally, the third volume stretches from the aftermath of the Second War all the way up to the Cataclysm, and covers topics that includes Malygos' descent into insanity, Deathwing's continued exploits up to and including the Cataclysm, and the sacrifice the Dragon Aspects made to defeat him - the loss of most of their power and beginning of the Age of Mortals.

Mangas
For slightly lighter reading that still touches on the history and lore of some of the most important dragons we will encounter in Dragonflight (
like Kalecgos
), you may want to check out these mangas.
The Sunwell Trilogy
The Sunwell Trilogy
is a manga series by Richard A. Knaak (Author) and Kim Jae-Hwan (Artist), following the blue dragon Kalecgyos as he journeys to Quel'thalas to try find answers about a strange power, and instead finds his first love - a simple peasant girl - at least, that's what she seems.

Reading Order
Want to read all the books, but not sure about the best reading order? We have a few suggestions.
By Chronological Order
If you want to start reading about the dragonflights' ancient history and then follow the timeline along until you get to the most recent story, then this might be the reading order that works best for you.
Since Dawn of the Aspects tells story from both ancient times and Cataclysm, we've given it two spots - just pick the one that works best for you. We've placed the Chronicles at the beginning of each section that other books go on to cover in more detail.

Charge of the Aspects
- Decision to use the Dragon Soul against Deathwing
Dawn of the Aspects

By Publication Date
Another way to approach this lore is to read in order of publication date - since lore changes over time, more recent stories tend to contain the most up-to-date cannon, as well as focus on story and characters who are more likely to be important today.
For example, while it's always possible the human mage Rhonin may come back from the dead and suddenly play an important role in Dragonflight, it's unlikely - even if he is one of the most important main characters in earlier dragon lore.

Order of Importance
While this is almost impossible to predict without knowing the exact details of the entirety of the story of Dragonflight, we've done our best to sort these books into a list that prioritizes importance and convenience. That way, even if you only manage to read a few books from this list, you should still end up with a good basic framework of dragon lore.
