The Devouring Cold One-Handed Sword Changes Sheathing Location
During the Patch 9.1 PTR, we discovered
gained a new on-use effect with seemingly no spells associated to it. While other special effect weapons such as
Jaithys, the Prison Blade
were added to the test vendor to preview their combat effects, The Devouring Cold was left out, keeping its special effect a mystery. Today we have confirmed that our
earlier speculation was correct
and the on-use effect changes the sword's sheathing position between back and hip!
Looted from Kel'Thuzad in the Sanctum of Domination,

. When the raid was remade in Wrath of the Lich King, the sword reappeared as
, dropping from Gluth and Gothik the Harvester instead, but there was another key difference as well - while their models were identical, The Hungering Cold sheathed on the hip, while Slayer of the Lifeless sheathed on the back. The Devouring Cold pays tribute to this, allowing players to choose how to display the weapon.

This kind of customization has been long requested by players, but so far only accomplished in two ways - by transmogging to a weapon which sheathed at the desired location, or playing a Monk due to all weapons sheathing on their back. Both of these have been only partial solutions however, restricting players to specific weapon models or a specific class which is instead completely unable to sheath on the hip. While we can hope that Blizzard someday institutes a toggle, The Devouring Cold circumvents the need by actually changing the item from one version to another, similar to upgrading an item with
Both versions have the same item ID, with bonus 7719 sheathing on the hip, while 7720 goes on the back.
World of Warcraft's first weapon which can be sheathed on either the back or hip, though only for this weapon:
transmogging to a new appearance overrides the sheathing behavior
transmogging to The Devouring Cold defaults to the hip
without adding the on-use effect to other items. Unfortunately, we can't expect every weapon going forward to have this same effect, since it would conflict with other special abilities, but it is a step in the right direction and a great call back to the weapon's predecessors.
