Former Lead Systems Designer Ghostcrawler has shared another round of thoughts on leveling in the Shadowlands pre-patch. This time, he dusts off his MoP-era end-game character and discusses the challenges returning players face after a break.
You can also check out his past commentary on
leveling a Warrior in MoP
and
Paladin through BFA
.
For this round of leveling, Ghostcrawler returned to his priest from the Siege of Orgrimmar days. This character is so old, it pre-dates the Warlords of Draenor character revamp, which drastically altered the expressions of some characters. Ghostcrawler's priest was particularly affected by these cosmetic changes, which seem to stand out more than the Shadowlands customization updates.
While the questing flow is straightforward on a brand-new character, with Exile's Reach flowing into BFA, Ghostcrawler is a bit more puzzled on how to proceed on a mid-level character. He also finds his bags cluttered with outdated items, but there's a risk in Blizzard blindly deleting gear.
The profession revamp also proved confusing. Professions were recently broken down into separate skill bands per expansion, but Ghostcrawler thought that he had missed a catch-up mechanic. Once the new profession system was explained, he seemed to like it.
He also debated XP locking a character at level 49, but commented that the UI for this seemed lacking, possibly hotfixed in. He's right in that the option to XP lock characters was
added quite late
in the Shadowlands beta process, relying on the old twink NPCs.
Ghostcrawler has previously tweeted about leveling a Paladin and Warrior. He finds that the Priest class has changed the most out of the classes he's tried out, noticing that Blizzard has tried to really differentiate Discipline and Holy specializations. Ghostcrawler wants to take some time to play solo, as he's concerned he has a steep learning curve while more-seasonal players are impatient.
When asked if he'd consider going Shadow, he replied that tanks and healers are more his speed.
He closes by musing that appealing to returning players is a very difficult challenge faced by Blizzard, and that it is easier to meet the demands of brand-new and active players in the pre-patch. He also wonders if he should commit to Shadowlands raiding--it would be a big time investment, but think of all the commentary we'd get!
