WoW Economy Weekly Wrap-Up
Hello! Welcome to the 227th edition of the WoW Economy Weekly Wrap-up!
Details continue to trickle through about the new Profession system in Dragonflight and 9.2.5 has yet to get a date for when it will be live, so we are in a bit of a lull period in general. However, gold making remains strong as there is always something to do either for current gold or for preparation ahead.
My name is
Samadan
and I'll be your guide through the World of Gold Making!
Updates from the Community Page
Last week, we
talked in-depth about the details
that are emerging about the new profession system in Dragonflight. This week, we have a few more updates from the
community page
worthy of discussion...
The huge focus on group content here worries me. There are a lot of us who don’t do group content for many many reasons. I have a whole thread about it. Professions are one way to really engage, develop a character, and be a part of the WoW world, without the group content. It can be a fantastic alternate path to an “end game” for some people.
Exactly. Please be sure that crafters can still do max level crafting with the mats others bring to them, even if they don’t do group content themselves.
I want to be able to use that huge 17 year list of tailoring patterns for others. I also want to be able to really focus on my profs vs group content as a viable long term activity.
Will that be possible or will crafting skill on my end be locked behind group content like in Legion?
This is a tricky needle to thread (insert tailoring joke here) as we want to reward players for doing group content. Instances are a major part of the game, and professions are meant to span pretty much every part of it. We also recognize that, as you say, professions are a great place for those less interested in group content to find a lot of gameplay.
Given that, one of our general goals for professions is that a player can be very successful without needing to set foot in an instance. We recognize that just because you want to craft the dragon head into an epic helmet, you don’t necessarily want to be the one to slay that dragon. Those are two very distinct fantasies and splitting those activities has a great deal of value. This is particularly because we want you to be able to think of yourself first and foremost as a scribe, a leatheworker, or any other profession. For some players ideally, their professions should be able to be the most important part of their identity, and where they can choose to spend the majority of their energy!
Given that, we are discussing how to achieve both the goals of having group content being rewarding to a player with professions, and avoiding it being required to be successful in your profession.
You will absolutely be able to max your professions’ skills, and very successfully specialize without setting foot in an instance in Dragonflight. The vast majority of recipes will continue to be acquirable through outside play as well. It is possible though, that some recipes will come from dungeons or raid. These are great places thematically to acquire some recipes, and become a cool reward for doing that content. That said, we are currently thinking that perhaps many, if not all of these recipes will not be soulbound, so you could ask someone to go into an instance to get them for you, or buy them off the AH.
Will guilds have dedicated crafters that don’t even raid with them, but are there fulfilling the fantasy and role of crafting awesome gear for their guild? We don’t know, but that would certainly be neat!
I can understand how this must be a difficult balance in terms of getting hold of recipes. Many turn to gold making and professions simply because they don't have the time to dedicate to group content and professions can be chipped away at at your own pace. Casual, solo play is a very different game that appeals to many and there hopefully is room for both.
It is reassuring to see that this is considered and a solution such as not making recipes soulbound for group content would be an elegant way to make it accessible to all. Long quest lines and other methods that let you slowly chip away at an end goal at your own pace would also be welcomed here.
Other notable points in the discussion include ...
"We haven’t discussed the details of gathering as much with you all yet, but I will note that we are adding quite a bit of depth to gathering as well, so we are not currently considering making the gathering professions secondary."
No current plans to make learned recipes account wide.
"We are definitely aware that inventory space is an issue and are currently looking into what we can do here!"
"There is definitely value to giving access to many of the older recipes through crafting orders, but given that this is a brand new system, we are likely going to want to work out the kinks for Dragonflight recipes before expanding too much into the massive amount of old content!"
"Philosophically, we like how optional reagents give lots of different ways to customize crafted gear. We will be trying out various types of optional reagents to see how they feel, so nothing set in stone yet, but I will say we like the way the 9.2 optional reagents let you do something a little more custom with your gear than just set their stats or modify item level."
"We recognize that lots of people see value in increasing the number of professions learned by a single player, and it’s something we have definitely discussed. Currently we have no plans to expand this number though."
"We’re definitely looking at older sources of skill, skill points, and other profession interactions to figure out how we might want to update them in Dragonflight. The main focus is definitely on Dragonflight professions, but something like updating that DMF quest could go very well with the overall update!"
So, these are all great points and you can see how much the focus is on the new system first, but with an eye to expanding it further later on. There are still many aspects to see how this will all work in a live system with people min/maxing and chasing the gold on the Auction House.
The optional reagents are a great system and I'm glad they are being continued. Below is some ways in which they are currently working for Shadowlands ...
Making the Most of Optional Reagents
The Crafter's Mark gear and optional reagents have been a fantastic way to customize specific armour with stat and ilevel combinations to make them appealing to players wanting upgrades. Even more so with the Progenitor Enhancements.
The Lazy Goldmaker
talks about his methods for guaranteeing high profit margins and consistent sales...

I’ve always loved selling catch up gear, and had great success with it in the past. And ever since I did the research on stat variants my profits have SOARED. This market is just absolutely fantastic, and I’ll share my secret sauce.
What we want to do is focus on the top stat combinations for item level 262 armor. I’ve had fantastic success with this, profit margins range from 2 000 gold up to 40 000 gold, on a very high population realm.
TSM still can’t handle crafting operations with missives. So the way I do it is by just opening the profession window, mousing over the recipe after adding the crafter’s mark and eyeballing it. I always use missives, and I craft based on the rules below. I currently don’t target every potential BiS combination, just the top ones.
These are certainly a fantastic market right now. I like to add
Pure-Air Sail Extensions
to all of mine simply for the stackable speed boost.
There is even more to this that can be done relatively easily and that's the
Novice Crafter's Mark
gear and
Penguin2gt
goes through the potential of the system as a whole and explains where profit can be found ...
There really is a lot of potential here. It's a shame more information isn't shown in the standard AH listings that allow players to easily find the specific stat combinations they want.
Making Gold in Classic with Inflation being so High
Now that Phase 5 of TBC is live and
WotLK is hurtling towards us
, u/NOHITJEROME asks
what's best for goldmaking in Classic?
In TBC, all consumables are skyrocketing 2-3x in price as Sunwell Plateau is a very difficult raid.
What's the best way to take advantage of high consumable prices for the upcoming Wrath Classic?
Current Ideas:
Herbalism / Mining alt to farm and sell materials
With prices so high, open world farming should be more than 2x efficient than normal.
Flipping items on the Auction House using TSM
We know that the supply of consumables available will keep going down as people keep wiping in Sunwell Plateau. So there should be profit to be made flipping any consumables whenever they are low later in the week.
Alchemy
Potion mastery should have good profit since people are constantly buying consumables for raid and not looking at prices much. Mana Potions, Injectors, Elixirs, etc.
Cooking
Cooking should be very profitable especially buying materials late in the week. Seemingly
Kibler's Bits
and
Fisherman's Feast
are less popular to cook and seem to have higher profit margins.
Gathering is pretty rubbish at the moment. Between bots and the sheer number of people trying to gather, I don't believe it beats dailies in gold per hour.
It's maybe too late to do it, but I doubt anything beats a geared prot paladin farming old level 60 5 man content. Except maybe gdkp runs.
Herbalism/mining will always bring a regular steady income. Enchanting is nice just for disenchant to get materials. If more into selling things other than raw materials you could always do alchemy/enchanting.
These are all great suggestions if you are looking to make gold in Classic. No doubt the hype of Wrath will bring many players back to servers, myself included!
