Hello! Welcome to the 259th edition of the WoW Economy Weekly Wrap-up!
The holiday season is nearly over and many have been enjoying the delights of Dragonflight. The race to world first is done and we can look forward to the meat and bones of the expansion safe in the knowledge of a roadmap ahead for next year. What does this mean for gold making? How are people getting on with Professions and Work Orders?
My name is
Samadan
and I'll be your guide through the World of Gold Making!
Confusion Over Crafting Work Orders
With the crafting work order system, the balance of what to craft and how much commission to offer has shifted over to the customer rather than the seller. This has led to a large amount of confusion of what is possible to craft right now, how much it realistically costs to do so and even if it is even possible without an Inspiration proc.
I've had this play out a few times now: Someone asks for a 418 item, I tell them that I can make it but it will take a crit craft or an illustrious insight (which I charge a lot for), and then they ghost me. Sometimes they come back later, after searching for another crafter and realizing that I wasn't kidding about 418 items having special requirements.
How do you handle this? It's a bit funny to me, but it'd be nice to do the craft for them when they ask.
The primary reason, and i dont blame them, is that "minimum requirement" is read by alot of people as "what do i want the outcome to be", so ofc they want it to be tier 5.
Fearing that not having it be tier 5 means that even if a better crafter comes along it "downgrades" it to whatever you set it to lower
Personally I think the system is almost perfect for an input view but it's wild that there is no way to actually see stats and guarantee they are what they say. In some parts I think is about how the data is split but crafter should be able to link some sort of card that shows their stats even in simple form.
The crafter has to provide the insight, and since mettle is limited it’s a waste to use it on a craft you’re not making much for. I charge 30k extra to use a mettle, which I think is pretty cheap but I don’t really care to charge more and I haven’t run out of mettle.
I think the messaging matters a lot. I also try and encourage people to do the proc since I don't want to use my mettle anyway.
"With my skills maxed out, I can guarantee you a 4*, and there's a 38% chance that I'll proc inspiration and you'll get a 5*. I don't charge for recrafts, and I'm happy to do it as many times as it takes, but you'll need to supply mats for each try. If you want to guarantee a 5* right off the bat, I can do that, but since the mats I need to make that are time-gated, it's another 50k gold for the craft."
One thing I really like about this crafting system is that customer service matters. Everyone in my guild knows the Lariat guy on my server cluster by name, and I already have a few loyal blacksmithing customers. It's a lot of fun, and it sure beats just dumping something on the AH and waiting.
The greatest confusion appears to be in how information is relayed between crafters and buyers, perhaps a website is in order to help? ...
Crafting Work Order Website

has been busy putting together a website to try to help connect crafters and customers together ...
Hi everyone! Hope everyone's enjoying the new Dragonflight crafting system. I'm back with another week of significant improvements to
WoWCraftingOrders.com
, which helps connect buyers and sellers of high-quality work orders without needing to spam trade chat.

Major Improvements
Edit Listings.
You can now edit most attributes of a listing rather than deleting and re-listing. This is much faster and hopefully makes it a lot less annoying to keep your listings up-to-date.
Backend Overhaul.
I switched from a split frontend and backend to one cohesive framework across everything, which makes development significantly quicker going forward.
Backend profiling and query optimization.
I integrated a service that lets me better view what's causing time delay in any given request and have been making changes accordingly to gradually bring query times down. Within the last few days, my 95th percentile request has gone down from about 6.7s to about 4.5s, meaning 95% of requests are quicker than 4.5s.
Bug Fixes.
I've fixed a variety of missing items, various performance issues, and various other things affecting site stability. I also figured out how to get some automated tests working on routes that require Blizzard OAuth, which further decrease my chances of breaking things with new changes going forward.
Up Next
Look into creating an in-game addon.
I think the need to maintain parity with the game is a lot of effort for people and is making my site harder for people to adopt. I think an in-game addon would decrease this friction.
As Blizzard blocks addons from making external API calls, my initial version would probably be something like SimulationCraft's, where the addon can give you an import string that you just post on the website, and it'll create listings for everything you can craft.
A longer-term version may incorporate an optional Desktop App like TSM's that will automatically keep things up to date, but I'm hesitant to start with that off the bat, as a lot of people won't put in that effort and (rightfully) wouldn't want to install a random .exe from an unestablished addon.
Reagent qualities.
You'll be able to specify what quality of item you can provide.
Further query optimization
. I'm still not completely happy with query times.
Feedback Request
The feature set of the site is becoming more and more finalized and I'd like to get a fresh round of what people think is missing, or what's adding unnecessary friction to the site. Please feel free to leave feedback in the Discord linked above, in
r/wowcraftingorders
, or in this post, and I should get back to you soon!
It's a very ambitious project and hopefully one that can be integrated further via an addon. The greatest obstacle is getting enough people using it to connect the two markets together.
How Penguin2gt is Making Profit
If you are wondering exactly how to turn a profit, look no further than
Penguin2gt
who goes through their process for making gold using simple niches specific to their methods of gold making and how exactly to leverage stats and work out where the profit lies...
WoW Token Prices Lowest in 2022
One of the things that goes hand in hand with expansion launches seems to be a drop in token prices as players buy tokens to buy gold to buy gear vs. the amount of people cashing in gold for Bnet balance for game time and other digital goodies.
Chart courtesy of
wowtokenprices.com
Seems gold generally is much harder to come by. And the usual launch price dropping hard. For EU most speculated a 250k floor, but we are now seeing 230k.
Am thinking it may hit 200k. What are your thoughts?
There tends to be a psychological wall at discrete price points where players with gold are waiting before buying a bunch of tokens. It seems to be currently sitting around 250k/150k. Will the price drop another 50k? Probably unlikely, but who knows?
There are several factors at play...
Gold does seem harder to come by for the casual player.
Dragon riding and gathering seems to have limited the presence of bots flooding the economy.
There's a big jump in gear at the start of an expansion and players are willing to spend gold to get "ahead"
To make the most out of Professions, players need to invest way more connecting with fellow players and using Work Orders.
Battlenet promotions for games, time, pets, mounts and transmog keep the gold flowing out of the game.
Plus many others that make predicting token price difficult. As it stands though, now is a good time to buy Bnet balance for gold if you have it spare!
Tailoring Build for Alts
The Lazy Godmaker
has put together a guide specific to tailor alts to help them make profit through cloth ...
Today we are looking at a profession build that works really well for an alt army, we’re going to be crafting the cooldown cloth from tailoring.
The two bolts
In the Draconic Needlework tree of the tailoring knowledge tree there are two different cooldown cloth bolts you can learn.
Azureweave
and
Chronocloth
. Their primary use is in epic Tailoring gear, and in the epic spellthread enchants for pants. This makes the materials very valuable, particularly quality 3.
Inspiration build
As with many other recipes the way to go is an inspiration build. The bolts have a recipe difficulty of 425, and the only realistic way to reach that is through inspiration. This means you need a good bit of knowledge to reach the quality 3 breakpoint as you will be putting 40 points into the generic tree to max the inspiration Node. I would pick one cloth type and get to the end node, and then put points into the Draconic Needlework base node. This will get you access to both sides of the tree. I’ve not done the math on the absolutely optimal build, but something like this is a good base to build on. The textiles tree and bolt crafting nodes also affect cooldown cloth, so there’s a good amount of multicraft and resourcefulness to grab here as well.

Profession stats
Obviously both Multicraft and Inspiration will be very important for this build. Both stats will significantly increase your profit and you want to grab these from knowledge. CraftSim can tell you what the best stat is and you should be putting that on your profession tool. I expect that inspiration will be the enchant to choose in most cases.
Other crafts
The nice thing about this build is that you can pivot into Textiles. This means you can also pivot into getting enough skill to hit skill break points for other cloth bolts or for the spellthreads to reach quality 3 on those. I would lean towards spellthreads if you want to do active goldmaking, or just maxing out all of the various cooldown cloth nodes if you want a more passive approach.
