Engineering Tools of the Trade Questline - Ub3r-Spanner - 8.1.5
In Patch 8.1.5, crafters unlock new Tools of the Trade questlines, rewarding special profession items! Today we are reviewing the Engineering questline coming in Patch 8.1.5, which rewards the
. This item allows you to summon several useful gadgets.
, we head to the Abandoned Junkheap, a mysterious place covered in cogs and metal in Tiragarde Sound. This area does not play a large role in 8.0, however, it will lead to Mechagon in 8.2!
<name>, I'm glad you stopped by. The Ub3r-Spanner, capable of crafting powerful constructs, and its schematic have been lost for years. Intel tells us that its schematic is located in a locked cache in The Abandoned Junkheap. You'll need to overcharge its electric barrier to gain access. Take my Current Culler and soak up some of the latent current from the sentries there and zap that chest open! <Layla makes finger guns and explosion sounds> Up for some treasure huntin'?
We fight our way through sentry turrets and mechanical guard dogs to the recipe cache. Here we'll find the
Encrypted Ub3r-Spammer Schematic
, as well as several incomplete recipes:
Schematic: Ultra Time Enhancer MK2: Incomplete notes on how to craft an Ultra Time Enhancer MK 2. Under the function heading, it reads "Allows the wearer to move through time at the rate of one second for every real world second."
Schematic: Undertuned Corgi Goggles: A failed recipe for a device designed to make one's friends look adorable. In practice, it simply made one aware that corgis exist.
Schematic: True Iron Oven Mitts: Instructions on how to craft True Iron Oven Mitts. An addendum at the bottom reads "... not practical, very heavy, stiff, and poor heat protection."
Since the recipe is encrypted, you're going to need some help. In the quest
, you visit Dataguru Gryzix in Vol'dun:
This schematic you found is encrypted. My tools are no good on it, not without risking the integrity of the data. However, I do know a guy who can definitely crack this cookie: Mr. Dataguru Gryzix. If I remember correctly, he's been vacationing on a beach in Vol'dun since the war broke out. Something about not getting the recognition he deserves. Anyways, I am sure you can convince him to help you.
Dataguru Gryzix wants to relax on the beach, but still offers to help. You'll need to get some items from the neighboring sethrak:
: Let me see the schematic... Yeah, yeah, alright. I can help you. I am going to need a few things to power my decoder. I need a way to channel electricity from the air around us. What better than to steal...I mean borrow some lightning rods from the sethrak that have been trying to steal my tech for weeks now! I'm sure you'll have to do some "convincing", but you seem like a pretty convincing <race>.
: Okay, I am going to need one more thing from you. The sethrak leader, Warlord Surgios, has been a real pain for me. He stole my mind enhancer. I can't do my work without it. It will make me be able to think much more clearly, and make less...deadly mistakes.
: Since you successfully interrupted my nap, my defenses are obviously lacking to say the least. That's because the sethrak, in addition to stealing my gadgets and gizmos, stole my mechs! Those morons don't even have the keys! <Gryzix laughs> Here, take my keys and get my mechs back.
Dataguru now has some of his valuable items, but he still needs his toolbox. In
, you put on his Mind Enhancer hat, and then retrieve it:
Okay, <name>. We got almost everything we need. Almost. You see, I lost my toolbox. I must have dropped it while running from the sethrak a couple days ago. Can ya fetch it for me? I'm not a very good engineer without my tools! And take a mech with ya. I've spied some mysterious dwarven and troll figures lurking around... better not be the Venture Co. One whiff of the schematic being here and we got trouble. You'll need the mind enhancer for it to follow you. Just put it on and you'll be good to go!
Dataguru is worried we're being followed, so he sends a Mecha-golem to protect us. His fears are realized when several Venture Co. Repossessors attack us.
When we return to the base, we discover Dataguru was assassinated! The Venture Co. leaves us a warning note:
To Whom It May Concern:
I hope this serves as a good enough warning. The Ub3r-Spanner schematic is and will remain property of the Venture Co.
Oh, and don't even think about looking for us in the ruins south-east of here. Because you won't find anything there but some rocks.
- Chief Expedition Officer McCormick
After reading the note, you realize in
that the decoder and Ub3r-Spanner schematics have been stolen. You decide to retrieve them, and fortunately, you still have the trusty mech at your side.
<You pick up the note and deduce that the Venture Co. are the killers of Dataguru Gryzix. You search his corpse, and find that his decoder and the Ub3r-Spanner schematic have been stolen. You need to retrieve his decoder and the schematic and bring them back to Layla Evenkeel to have any hope of crafting the Ub3r-Spanner. That mech you have following you should prove itself useful.>
We defeat McCormick and his shredder, looting the decoder and schematic again.
Returning back to our capital city, in
we successfully decode the recipe:
It's a shame that Gryzix had to die. Those Venture Co. make all of us enterprising types look bad! At least we can still decode the Ub3r-Spanner schematic. Here, hand me that recipe and his decoder and I'll get this whipped up in just a second.
Venture Co in Battle for Azeroth
The Venture Company, a shady cartel, has earned the ire of many during Battle for Azeroth.
, we learn that the Venture Company worked with the Horde to refine Azerite--but then backed out of the deal.
Nobody, and I mean NOBODY double-crosses me and gets away with it! The Venture Co. betrayed us in a deal for Azerite refining techniques. We need pay 'em what we owe 'em. If you're not pickin' up what I'm puttin' down, I mean we need to kill that backstabbin' upstart Mogul Razdunk. You take care of him; I'll take care of gettin' what we're owed. I s'pose we oughta tell Blightcaller about this, huh? When he tells us what to do, just smile and nod. We'll handle it our way.
Dark Iron Unlock Scenario
, we learn that Venture Company stole the prized weapon Ironfoe.
The Battle for Azeroth dungeon
is the latest project of the Venture Company. They use it to mine Azerite and sell it to the highest bidder. Their leader,
is the final boss of this instance.
Never able to ascend to Trade Prince, Mogul Razdunk is certain that becoming the world's foremost Azerite baron will bring him fame and fortune beyond his station.
With the deal of Mogul Razdunk, it's unclear what happens next to the Venture Company, but the Island Expedition quest
reveals they have a long-term plan:
<An enormous volume, and printed in very small print. You can't make it through even a few sentences before the words begin to swim before your eyes. The Venture Company's long-term plan appears to be quite complex and nearly impossible to understand. One thing is for certain: a competing enterprise would likely pay well to get their hands on this tome.>
We turn the book into
, someone we think is from the competing Steamwheedle Cartel...but apparently he's an investor in the Venture Company! This implies the Venture Company has a larger presence than we thought, with investors playing both sides.
Yeah? What do ya got there? Oh.
Listen, my name's on the back of that thing because I'm what you call an "investor." I put money into a bet that the company's going to succeed or not.
It's all a little complicated, so don't worry your pretty little head. I didn't do anything wrong, technically! We're just leveraging some existing infrastructure to make a little gold.
Hey, look, I've got a huge bag of Azerite right here! Why don't you take it with you? Too heavy for me, really.
With the return of the Venture Company in Patch 8.1.5, the organization is alive and well even after the death of their leader. As they've targeted the peaceful inventor Dataguru Gryzix, could they target other enterprising goblins and gnomes? The Venture Company could become an important antagonist in the Mechagon patch, aiming to steal useful recipes for their nefarious purposes.
To craft the
, you will need the following reagents:
- Sabertron NPC in Tiragarde Sound, Abandoned Junkheap
in Temple of Sethraliss dungeon
in MOTHERLODE dungeon
summons different inventions, all on a 15-minute cooldown:
- target dummy which also draws aggro from you
- mechanical dog that attacks your target
- army of bomb bots that explode on your target
