Blue Dragonflight Questline in Patch 10.1 (Story Spoilers)
A new massive Blue Dragonflight has arrived on the live servers,
following Kalecgos's timer from last week.
We have completed the questline, and bring in all the details of what happens in it!
WARNING: Patch 10.1 story spoilers ahead!
The Veiled Ossuary
The questline starts with Kalecgos in the Azure Archives, requiring you to fly to the Veiled Ossuary in northern Thaldraszus to speak with the blue dragon Senegos (yes, Kalecgos will not give you a portal - have fun!).
As we arrive in the Veiled Ossuary, we learn that Senegos used to be the keeper of the place. Senegos tells us that Kalecgos plans on putting to rest the remains of Malygos and Sindragosa, former Aspect of Magic and Consort. As you pick tomes to clean up the Ossuary, Senegos talks more about his functions there.
I appreciate your patience, <player>. I'm sure we'll get this place cleaned in no time.
> I'm here to help you, Senegos. Can you tell me more of this place?
The Veiled Ossuary is where we used to bury our dead. Us dragons live quite a long time, but old age does eventually take us all, though the Aspects play by different rules.
I imagine Kalecgos told you he plans to put to rest the last essences of Sindragosa and Malygos.
Well, we can't do that if the Veiled Ossuary is a mess now, can we?
Senegos: Thank you my dear. <player>, we'll be able to see what you see with this spell. Quite handy for extra commentary.
Senegos: I believe I may have put too much power into that spell to save young Kalecgos from Raszageth... it's taking quite some time to recover.
Senegos: Ah... these ancient halls. In the old times, blue dragons would claim a small location in the ossuary where they wished to have their remains sent.
Senegos: We used Dragonblight in Northrend as a final resting place when it was impossible to return to the Isles.
Senegos: Those who could make it back here after Neltharion nearly wiped us out passed within these halls. I was ordered to leave their remains undisturbed.
Senegos: I was the last remaining gravekeeper after that... given the task to update all the graves before we departed.
Senegos: I was younger, more rebellious then. They gave me the gravekeeper role as a way to teach me responsibility. It wasn't until the War of the Ancients that I took it seriously.
We're then requested to clean up the Ossuary - In blue dragon fashion, with a reference to Katamari Damacy!
The next request on Senegos's list is to update and add new graves for slain blue dragons. We see some names and learn of their deaths, as well as add new names. Many names we've seen in recent times are mentioned, like Arcanagos (now Nightbane in Karazhan), Umbrelskul, Arygos, and many others.
After this, it is time to give Sindragosa and Malygos their proper send-offs, with the presence of Kalecgos and Alexstrasza. But first, we need to dispel lingering memories of both - of betrayal, of an unwilling master, of a traitorous sister.
Senegos: Here they are now. Greetings Kalecgos, and to you, Life-Binder.
Alexstrasza: Ah, Senegos. I saw the remnants of your arcane ball. I am heartened to see you have not forgotten your old ways.
Alexstrasza: Kalecgos, you may do the honors to lay the essences of Malygos and Sindragosa to rest.
Kalecgos: Thank you. Sindragosa... Malygos... I am sorry it took us so long to give you this peace.
Kalecgos: May you have the rest now you were robbed of in life.
<You see the image of Neltharion, the former Black Dragon Aspect. Memories begin to flash as if it were your own.
You were suspicious of Neltharion. Malygos trusted him. They fought Galakrond together. Together, they saved Azeroth.
Who were you to go against that? You put aside your suspicions. It was paranoia to believe an aspect would become corrupted.
And yet, it happened. You cursed yourself when the fighting began. You should have taken a stand. You could have stopped this.
This all happened because of your inaction. Sindragosa, the Azure Queen, would be no more.>
<The image stubbornly refuses to be dispelled. Instead, more images appear in your mind.
You are gravely wounded. Before you lost your sight, you saw the blue dragons wiped out in an instant.
You're flung into the cold reaches of Northrend, far from your home in the Azure Archives. Far from your intended resting place in the Veiled Ossuary.
Perhaps you could reach Dragonblight. Find your rest there. You call out for your love, Malygos, but he doesn't answer.
You realize there will be no rest. You are alone. Your love for the world of mortals is replaced with hatred before everything fades.>
<You feel memories begin to seep into the corners of your mind. It feels as if they were your very own.
Cast out from your fellow aspects. The great Malygos, left alone to protect Azeroth from mortals.
The others do not understand what you've been through. You were at the forefront against Neltharion.
You lost everything. Sindragosa, your flight... your very mind. Yet you still sought to save Azeroth from itself.
And for that, your once beloved sister helped lead a band of adventurers to slay you.>
<The image does not vanish, but instead fills your mind with more images.
A battle. Destruction of your very self. The sadness of your fellow aspects at your death.
Yet, a small part survived.
They called it the Heart of Magic. They did not know it still contained the last of your essence.
You feel regret seeing the faces of those you once loved. Perhaps you were the one who betrayed them.
You do not have long to dwell on this, as the memories return to violence.
Death. Destruction. Torment. That is all you know now, and there is no escape.
The mortals and aspects must pay for their actions.>
<As you look at the figure, the memories associated with it flood into your mind as if they were your own.
You are risen from the dead. There is a figure. The Lich King. He knows your name is Sindragosa.
You are bound to his will. The once vibrant personality you had is gone, replaced with hatred and bitterness.
Hatred towards Malygos, who abandoned you. Bitterness towards the world, that betrayed you.
Is this what you've become? Where does the Lich King's will end and Sindragosa's begin?>
<The memory does not go away, and instead more flashes fill your mind.
Abominations testing your strength, torturing you. Preparing you to fight the enemies of the Lich King.
Adventurers surrounding you, wielding their pathetic magics against your might.
You are eventually destroyed... but not fully. Your essence was entrapped within the crystalline form and handed to one named Kalecgos.
You scream in fury. They believe you are at peace. They do not know you are stranded.
Once again, no one is coming to save you. You are trapped for eternity inside this crystal.
Just as you believe the memories end, it begins again. Rising from the dead, full of hatred...>
Blue Dragon Reinforcements
We fight the memories, but they're still overwhelming enough to the point we cannot fully clear the Veiled Ossuary. Kalecgos then requests us to check on dragons that did not answer to the original call of the Dragon Isles, including one that might have the knowledge to help us - Azuregos, who has been in charge of the Nexus since the events of Legion.
Azuregos: I apologize, Lady Sindragosa. I did not realize I was in the presence of your simulacrum.
Sindragosa: I have heard much of you from Kalecgos, young Azuregos.
Azuregos: Oh? And how did our mighty Aspect describe me?
Kalecgos: I told Sindragosa you're a recluse, stubborn, and prone to cutting ties with any who slight you.
Kalecgos: But I trust you to aid me in being the Aspect the blue dragons deserve.
Kalecgos: I called for your aid in the Azure Span, but you did not answer. I called for you when the oathstone was activated, but you ignored me.
Kalecgos: You may never believe in me, but I need you to believe in your flight and help us find the others who are missing.
Azuregos: ... I will do what I can. Now, do you know what is happening here?
Kalecgos: Judging by the remnants here, I believe we're still seeing the after effects of putting Sindragosa and Malygos's essences to rest.
Kalecgos: Senegos mentioned this was an uncommon circumstance, but it appears its effects are more wide spread than we thought.
With the help of Azuregos, we clear arcane disruptions caused by the memories within the Nexus, and in exchange, Azuregos mentions he figured out a way to find any remaining Blue Dragons that also did not answer the call of the Isles. With this, we return to the Azure Archives - And we now must go on a trip around Azeroth to find all the lost blue dragons!
Booty Bay - Zeros
Zeros is a once fledgling whelp that made a career as an auctioneer in Booty Bay, but is now caught in trouble! The magical blue crystals he sold to Booty Bay people have been discovered to be fake ones, but Zeros swears this shouldn't be the case.
You will then help Zeros uncover the source of these fake blue crystals. After bribing Venture Co. goblins, we discover the crystals were swapped and they did not mind Zeros taking the blame for selling cheap copies. Once we figure out what pirate crew did the crystal swapping, we raid their ship and steal some gold back to pay Baron Revilgaz (but not before some intervention from Senegos) and settle Zeros's debt, allowing him to return to the Dragon Isles.
Crystalsong Forest - Lanigosa
Lanigosa is working in Crystalsong Forest, researching the doom that happened there - Shandaral's mages condemning the souls of their people to an eternity of torment in an attempt to defend their home against the Blue Dragonflight.
Lanigosa is unable to leave while the arcane disruptions keep ravaging Crystalsong Forest, and you must help her control them so she can leave for the Dragon Isles.
Jade Forest - Kyrigosa
Kyrigosa is the clutch-sister of Arygos and was originally featured in the
Twilight of the Aspects
book. She is a close friend of Kalecgos, and has chosen to settle in the Jade Forest, away from the cold weather of Northrend. We help her by delivering flowers and cleaning the local pond for the village she lives in.
Once we help her with the village and clean her house, Kirygosa mentions that although she is happy that the Blue Dragonflight is reunited once more, she feels more at home in Pandaria. As Kirygosa thinks over the decision to return to the Dragon Isles once more, we go drinking with Kalecgos at a local Pandaren bar. Ultimately, she decides to not return to the Dragon Isles for the time being - she feels like she has agency in her life, for once.
Theramore - Surigosa
Surigosa is reported to be investigating a sect of rogue mages, the Sullied Banner - And it has been reported they're in the ruins of Theramore. According to Surigosa, they're attempting to recreate the mana bomb that destroyed the very city she's investigating. As we pacify members of the Sullied Banner, we learn they're followers of Rhonin, who sacrificed himself in order to weaken the impact of the mana bomb and save Jaina Proudmoore - And they're looking to avenge Theramore.
As we apprehend the leader of the Sullied Banner, we learn they started attempts on recreating the mana bomb out of desperation - They feel like they needed protection, as the Blue Dragonflight had failed them in the past, as the Focusing Iris from the Eye of Eternity was used to create the mana bomb that destroyed Theramore. Surigosa returns to the Dragon Isles, but not before Kalecgos reflects on the Blue Dragonflight's role in the destruction around them.
Winterspring - Haleh
Haleh is the Matron Protectorate and the last living consort of Malygos. She is known to players who have played Classic or Cataclysm, as she is involved in several quests in both expansions involving the Blue Dragonflight. Haleh doesn't want to leave Winterspring as she feels she has finished business with the misuse of magic in the zone - and she believes Winterspring can be a home for blue dragons, after her work is done.
In Haleh's research, she finds a cursed artifact, the first in over 40 days - But just enough to upset her and make her believe that Winterspring will never be fully cleansed of curse magic. After we bring Haleh to the hot springs to relax, we manage to convince her to return to the Dragon Isles, at least for the time being.
A Proper Farewell
After all remaining dragons are located, Kalecgos starts a speech talking about their reunion, but it is cut short - The memories of Sindragosa and Malygos are destroying the Veiled Ossuary! As we arrive there, we learn the memories have overwhelmed the area and created a barrier around the graveyard area we previously visited.
After we cleanse the memories ravaging through the ossuary, we manage to weaken the barrier enough to gather the final essences of Sindragosa and Malygos, both still crying in rage and reliving the last moments of their lives. Sindragosa's simulacrum suggests we contain their essences within the Azure Vault. After going through a short scenario in which we contain their essences, an in-game cutscene plays, where the spirits of Sindragosa and Malygos are finally able to rest in peace.
An Ancient Dragon's Passing
One final chapter remains, though. With all of this, Senegos feels like he's finally ready to pass on, giving the Blue Dragonflight a gift - the peaceful passing of one of their own.
I have been waiting for this moment for quite a long time.
The blue dragons are together again. Sindragosa and Malygos's legacies have been put to rest, and my children's children can once again experience the beauty of the Dragon Isles.
It is time for me to rest, <player>. There are many dragons waiting for me... and many who I have sorely missed every day of this long life of mine.
> You don't have to go, Senegos. I can figure out a way to save you.
I'm sure you could find some ancient artifact that would grant me another thousand years or reverse my age. I know because I've found several! How do you think I've lasted this long?
I made a promise to my daughter, Stellagosa's mother, when she was killed. I told her I would look after Stellagosa and the others until our flight was renewed.
There are many things I've done to artificially extend my life. I should have passed some time ago... but I could not leave my brood alone.
There is nothing I need to be "saved" from, <player>. It has been my time for a while. I finally get to rest and accept it.
A Proper Extraction
If you're a
wielder, there is also a special questline, in which Kalecgos himself sends his farewell to Tarecgosa - Whose essence is bound to your staff. Kalecgos first tells you of the feelings he's had on Tarecgosa, especially after she sacrificed himself by taking an attack meant to kill him - And Tarecgosa already starts manifesting herself as Kalecgos talks about her.
Kalecgos: I have learned much in this short time on the isles, friend. And there is something I must do.
Kalecgos: My sister, you are not forgotten to me. You never will be. But you deserve more than an eternity alone.
You feel a familiar presence envelope you.
Tarecgosa: Kalec... my friend, tell him -- no, it can wait. It is something I must say myself.
Kalecgos: Tarecgosa was destined for greatness, but destiny was not kind to her. After the Cataclysm, we were betrayed by one of our own. He chose to serve Deathwing.
Kalecgos: Tarecgosa's sacrifice was something which involved us both. I would be honored if you helped me send her to rest.
Kalecgos: My sister threw herself in front of an attack meant for me, and suffered a mortal wound in the process. To prolong her time on Azeroth, we bound her soul to a staff. One that you now have in your possession.
Kalecgos has the idea of creating a ritual to siphon her essence from the staff, and giving her a final resting place, and has you go through the Dragon Isles to gather reagents. As you gather them, Tarecgosa speaks to you directly, talking about the time she spent with you.
Tarecgosa: Know, mortal, that I do not resent our time together... nor Kalec's actions. I have seen so much of this world through your eyes. I could not imagine a world where our lives did not intersect.
Tarecgosa: As the world changes -- and you change -- I stay stagnant. It is time for me to move on.
Once we gather the materials, we return to the Veiled Ossuary, and with Kalecgos's ritual, we finally put Tarecgosa's soul to rest. Completing this ritual will grant you the
, an item that grants you Tarecgosa's Visage as an actual mount!
Kalecgos: Tarecgosa, my dear sister. I feel as though I am still learning from you, despite being the teacher. Your absence is one that weighs heavily on my heart. I wish I could fly in the same skies as you once again.
Kalecgos: But clinging to an unchangeable past in hopes that fate may be kind is a fruitless dream. I realize this now. It will be the memories I have of you that will define my own future.
Tarecgosa: Kalec, my dear brother. I wish for you to know one thing. I am proud of you.
Kalecgos: I--I'm so sorry... for failing you...
Tarecgosa: It was my choice -- there is a world that needs you out there now, my wingmate. And I know you will guide our kin into the brightest future. It is time for my chapter to end.
Kalecgos: Farewell, Tarecgosa. A dear sister, hero, student, and teacher. Though blood does not bind us, you will always be family.
Kalecgos: May your soul find its place soaring among the stars.
