Art Lead Glenn Rane Leaves Blizzard Entertainment to Co-Found LightForge Games
World of Warcraft Principal Artist and Hearthstone/Diablo Immortal Art Lead Glenn Rane has left Blizzard Entertainment, joining ten other Blizzard and Epic Games alumni to co-found
Based in Raleigh, North Carolina, Lightforge Games got its start after raising $5 million from investors in the tech industries, including Galaxy Interactive, NetEase Games, Dreamhaven, Maveron, and 1UP Ventures. In an
interview with GamesBeat
, CEO Matt Schembari spoke about creating the all-remote working studio.
Our blended DNA from both Blizzard and Epic extends to the entire studio at this point,” Schembari said. “About a year ago, a bunch of us got together and have been operating quietly, building up the company and our early game prototypes. We’re testing and validating crazy game ideas that we have been coming up with.”
While he isn’t talking about the game yet, Schembari said the it will be highly social and creative, and it will run across multiple platforms.
“We love experiences where players can come together and build worlds together, create stories together, tell stories together, where they’re able to have this kind of emergent gameplay. Telling stories together is really the part that we’re most focused on,” he said. “We really believe that there’s no barrier between creation and play. It’s not user-generated content in the classic sense of you create something and then you publish it and people can download it. It’s a different kind of model than just UGC.”
In his 19 years with Vivendi and Blizzard Entertainment, Rane served as a concept artist, creative art director, principal artist for World of Warcraft, and Art Lead for both Hearthstone and Diablo Immortal, creating some of the most memorable art in Blizzard games. Although he worked on virtually every Blizzard franchise throughout his career, his more recognizable works include the original Burning Crusade box art, Battle for Azeroth key art, BlizzCon key art, several loading screens throughout various expansions, and Hearthstone hero portraits!
This is just a small sample of two decades worth of art, though you'd be hard pressed to play any Blizzard game without seeing more of his fantastic work. While we don't yet know what kind of projects he'll be creating as Art Director at Lightforge Games, we can be sure it will continue to live up to the impressive standards set so far, though in the meantime you can see more of his work on Artstation, Deviant Art, and his own personal gallery.
