Today we will take a look at the DPS balance in Castle Nathria during the fourth week of Patch 9.0.5. For this analysis we will use data provided by
Warcraft Logs Mythic Castle Nathria statistics
.
Warcraft Logs' Castle Nathria Statistics Page
Disclaimers and Source
The data for this article was taken from the
Castle Nathria Statistics Page on Warcraft Logs
under the Shadowlands Patch 9.0.5 partition at the 95th percentile for Mythic difficulty in the window.
The idea of this article is to give a perspective of the state of class balance for Castle Nathria in Shadowlands Season 1, looking at the data of the most recent week in the raid.
We say perspective, as there are inherent biases in looking at the data this way.
Specs that are considered underpowered are generally played less and tend to appear weaker than they actually are.
This happens as many performance-oriented players will tend to play the strongest spec or class, increasing even further the gap between top and bottom specs.
The balance between specs is very delicate and will likely change throughout Season 1, as player acquire more gear, different classes and specs tend to perform better with more secondaries.

Spec Analysis for the Fourth Week of Patch 9.0.5
There was little movement in rankings this week. As the class changes from 9.0.5 settle in, ranking will be more stable, meaning the likelihood of movement is minimal. Only changes to be observed without any external influences like balancing tuning will be due to players starting to kill bosses faster, leading to changes on cooldown alignments, or new playtstyles discovered.
For this week, we've asked the leaders of the statistics, our Balance Druid, Affliction Warlock, and Shadow Priest Class Writers to talk about their specs in 9.0.5 and their lead in Castle Nathria.
Balance Druid
Balance Druid in Castle Nathria has incredible single target burst damage with Celestial Alignment + Convoke when paired with Empyreal Ordnance and a second on use trinket. With all of that burst, they have the highest single target burst in the game. If you are looking at the final 3 encounters of the instance in Sludgefist, Stone Legion Generals, and Sire Denathrius, then moonkin is incredibly strong on 2 out of 3 of these fights. On sludgefist moonkin is virtually unkillable thanks to the armor gained from moonkin form. This makes moonkin very good at taking the chain slams and creates the best utility. For stone legion generals moonkin is pretty lackluster as a whole, but does good damage to singular commando shields by pooling astral power. Moonkin is generally not preferred on this fight though. For Sire Denathrius moonkin is incredibly good for phase 3 damage on Denathrius if you are running double on use trinkets and they also have incredibly potent damage for lady sinseer which is really important as well.
The WarcraftLogs statistics page is a bit misleading though as balance is heavily skewed due to Council of Blood. If you look at the actual data, moonkin is beating all other specs by 20% on that fight since the waiters are a significant portion of moonkin's damage. If you change it to boss damage then moonkin is the lowest damage to bosses by 7% under all other specs. Moonkin still is really good, the data is skewed a bit.
Affliction Warlock
Affliction unsurprisingly remains of the strongest general dps specs in Castle Nathria. In our last class checkup back in February, it was already near the top of the charts - now, as players attain gear and are able to more correctly itemize, affliction is able to scale incredibly well, really only being beaten out but shadow priests on pure single target, and balance druids on aoe rot.
There are a few reasons for this - affliction's mastery,
精通:剧痛
, scales incredibly well when multiple targets are introduced. For fights like council of blood, or sire denathrius in phase 2, affliction outclasses all other specs in the game when it comes to pure boss damage, while maintaining decent uptime on adds. In addition to this, affliction has become one of, if not the best targets for
能量灌注
. Haste is already one of affliction's more valuable stats, only barely being beaten out by mastery, but also with the trinket options that most affliction warlocks opt for,
释魂红玉
and
秘法师的赞美诗
, you have an obscene amount of crit during your cooldowns, increasing the value of the temporary haste buff even more. Finally, for a little extra bonus, the haste from power infusion also scales multiplicatively with affliction's
黑暗灵魂:哀难
, providing an even further incentive to slam it on the warlock. All of this together make affliction of the strongest all around specs in castle nathria at the moment.
Shadow Priest
Shadow Priest is a spec that has been doing well in Castle Nathria, following the changes to classes in patch 9.0.5. While the spec lacked major representation early on during the world first race, its popularity and performance on some of the later bosses has been rising week by week. Sire Denathrius, despite Shadow struggling to have much of an impact in the first few minutes, is a fight where the spec is regarded as a particularly good choice.
Shadow’s overall Performance, as shown in the Warcraftlogs data, mostly comes from its phenomenal Single Target damage, ranking number 1 for Shriekwing, Hungering Destroyer, and Artificer Xymox. The spec also ranks number 1 for boss damage across all fights in Castle Nathria, making it one of the best choices for any raid team looking for additional priority damage. Fights with large amounts of adds and AoE, such as Sun King and Council of Blood, continue to be at best mediocre.
Shadow also gained a new tool in patch 9.0.5, the
暗影烈焰棱镜
legendary. While not enough to rescue the spec’s performance on the premiere cleave fight of the tier, Stone Legion Generals, it did marginally increase single target, as well as allow Shadow to do some relevant damage to off targets during its major burst windows. This legendary likely took the playerbase some time to acquire and adjust to, explaining why we’re only now seeing its widespread usage in top parses.
Shadow’s reputation as a
能量灌注
bot has also begun to fall off, which likely also contributes to an uptick in average performance. The spec is strong in its own right, and no longer routinely gives up its own damage cooldown to other players.
Mythic Sire Denathrius, a fight that on the face of things Shadow should perform poorly on, is actually quite good. Shadow’s incredible burst damage is very useful for burning down adds in phase 2, as well as having some of the highest, if not the highest, single target damage during the final phase of the encounter. Despite all of this, It’s still not a spec you would ideally want to bring in multiples for Mythic Progress. Shadow lacks the tools to be able to do everything asked of it in Castle Nathria, but what it can do, it does very very well.
