How much would I expect to pay for one off eBay or similar?
According to http://www.wowtcgloot.com/magic_rooster_egg.htm (most information sourced from there), the expansion released on the 30th June 2009. Upperdeck have not specified any changes to the rarity of the three loots in this expansion (Path of Cenarius, Ogre Pinata, Magic Rooster Egg). Mounts tend to be more desirable than pets, and this is the first unique model that UDE has released since the X-51 Nether-Rocket XTREME, therefore a rough guess on price is over $300 USD.

Facts:

You receive one epic item version when you redeem the code (free).
It crows and scratches like a real-life rooster.
The level 40 mount (epic) can be traded in-game.
When learned, the rooster mount counts toward the Mountain 'o Mounts achievement (Horde or Alliance).

Blizzard has announced that the removal of the BoP flag on most TCG mounts is intended and expected to go live ( Blue Post ):

In the upcoming content patch 3.2, Call of the Crusade, we are changing the Upper Deck Trading Card Game mounts to be Bind-on-Use instead of Bind-on-Pickup. This will allow players to sell newly redeemed TCG mounts in-game through the trade window, Auction House or via CoD. The primary goal behind this change is to help reduce the number of players who are getting scammed by trading for an invalid mount code. As part of this update, the NPC vendor functionality currently in place for these mounts will be removed, and instead the mount (both epic and non-epic when applicable), will now be immediately placed in your inventory upon the verified redemption of the code. If you have already redeemed one of these codes and have not purchased both the epic and non-epic versions from the vendor window, it's important that you do so before the patch is released.

This update will affect the Spectral Tiger, Swift Spectral Tiger, X-51 Nether-Rocket, X-51 Nether-Rocket X-TREME, Big Battle Bear, and Magic Rooster Egg. Items that were obtained before the patch will not be affected by this change and will continue to be soulbound to the character that purchased them.

I, Aestu of Bleeding Hollow-US, acquired this mount for 25,000g from someone who obtained the TCG card. I am told it usually goes for much more - I got a good deal.

Riding it around, it makes exactly the same sound effects as a chicken critter, but has the same animations as a hawkstrider, including bobbing side-to-side and occasionally preening itself.

I get a lot of tells about "riding a #$%^"...

I am also asked where I got it. I typically respond as follows.
"Well, where does the Raven Lord mount come from? Where does the tiger mount come from? So on and so forth - except a chicken."
"You...killed...a chicken god?"

I recently purchased this for 20k. Unfortunately, there seems to be a small bug with it. Instead of the mount conforming to your race's size, like all other mounts, you will conform to this mount's size. Meaning, as a Tauren, I shrink considerably when mounted on this mount.

Update: It now works properly.

Interestingly enough, you can mount to this mount from another and not be dismounted on the cast.

Probably a glitch, but all other mounts will dismount your current mount before mounting you on your new one.

As a collector of rare mounts and pets, I was very pleased to purchase this today for 200k, after seeing it on the AH for 250-350k over the past few months.

As one of the larger races in the game (male Tauren), I was slightly disappointed though to find that the mount didn't scale with my size, and with my gear equipped, I nearly "swallow" the mount entirely, so much so that it's hard to see the Chicken at all.

To alleviate this, I've taken to equipping 褪色的巫师帽 or Burgy Blackheart's Handsome Hat to help show off this mount's true, unique beauty while I run circles in Orgrimmar (appropriately, with my new "Insane" title).

I'm pleased with my purchase, but just a word to the wise to my fellow Taurens, who might be on the fence about purchasing this.

However, I am able to use this mount on my lvl 21 character, which naturally I only have apprentice riding on, after account-wide mounts came with patch 5.0.4 .

This is the one and only CHICKEN mount in the game. There are various other bird-type mounts that people have off-handedly referred to as chicken mounts (usually since they can't remember their actual names), but to be sure, the Magic Rooster is the only actual chicken mount in WoW.

This post will likely be down voted as most other useful information on item cost is here on Wowhead, BUT those of you reading this and hoping to procure this item would do incredibly well to listen here.

I cannot stress to you, as a player who has made gold cap several times over on the AH and bought things well below suggested buyouts that the suggested buyout price is by no means the end all, be all definitive price for the items featured on this site. Particularly so for TCG items.

Case in point?

A Magic Rooster Egg had been on the AH for 300k on my server, Wyrmrest Accord. It, after about 2 weeks of sitting there, was bought out by someone a little more desperate that I was. When it sold, I originally had second thoughts about not pulling the trigger at 300k... especially when shortly afterwards another was listed at an (what I would consider) absurdly high 400k. After initially contacting him, he let it be known to me that he wouldnt even consider a lower offer... but with my extensive knowledge of rare item pricing, I knew this would not last, and so I politely asked him if we could Btag and perhaps discuss business again some time in the future.

Flash forward two weeks

After doing a little digging amongst my other rare collecting friends, I found someone who would be willing to transfer the mount over to Wyrmrest Accord for 280k. Still a bit higher than I wanted to pay, but I arranged for that to happen pending my search for a better price. That is when I decided to message up the fellow I had added to my btag and ask him how his attempt to sell the egg was going. I wasnt very surprised to hear that it wasnt going well... and that is when I asked him if he would consider a lower price... We negotiated for a bit, but I couldnt get him to a price I was interested in it at, which would have been 250k.

The next day, he messages me and asks if I would buy it for 250k, to which I said I would consider it.

One day later, he contacts me again and asks me what I was thinking on the price... I politely told him that I would consider it at 235k (and Im certain I could have gotten it for less, but I wasnt feeling stingy), to which he eagerly accepted!

Moral of the story is this... be PATIENT. The market for these items is extremely high in price, and ridiculously so at times. The suggested prices here on Wowhead, though I love this site, only help perpetuate that. Do -not- automatically accept them as a price reference. Work, widdle your prospective seller down... you would not believe the crazy deals I have gotten this way, and the gold I have saved in the process. I owe half of my gold capping fortune in gold to intelligent and conservative spending, and the other half to hard AH work... and that leads me to this...

If you want something, but disagree with the price being asked... stick with your gut, and work towards the price point that works for you, but politely.165k off the original asking price for an item is a pretty damn good deal... and if I can get that kind of deal, so can you.

I must have missed a post, but did really no-one mention, that this mount is a reference to El Pollo Grande, who was accidentally summoned by Niby the Almighty during the warlock class quest Kroshius' Infernal Core?
Back in vanilla and BC this quest had to be completed in order to learn Summon Infernal.

This is why, should I ever get my hand on it, this will be the mount for my warlock ;)

I'd have to say that this is probably one of my favorite mounts. Even now, its pretty rare and still a head-turner! Alot of players have never seen nor heard of it before, even with it's age!

I am totally impressed with how much content was added. From the garrison campaign: shipyard, to the mythical dungeons, and a variety of pets and a killer raid. even the new upgrades for crafted gear. IN comparison to the previous expansions, this one blows them out of the water. I foresee many return players since they did such an outstanding job.
On that note, I feel your site is extremely under-rated. You help people who get stuck and give information to help understand the story line and help comprehend the overall aspect of the game. Good Job. without your site I know I would be completely lost. Please let the people running the site they are much appreciated.

And as for 6.2, Its nothing less then another expansion ad I am very pleased.

My favorite thing about Patch 6.2 is that it's full of new content, not just tweaks of the old. I really enjoyed the Time Walkers Dungeons! Felt just like I used to when I could barely beat them in the first iteration, lolol. Thanks for all the new content Blizzard!

I only bought this mount fairly recently, and had only really known it existed for a few months before that. As soon as I saw it, though, I knew I needed to have it. It would be the pinnacle of my mount-collecting-and-riding WoW experience. A few weeks ago I finally bit the bullet and made the purchase.

Just today I saw on some forums a link to an "enchanted chicken" mount that's been datamined for Legion. The mount art (probably just a placeholder) is of the Magic Rooster mount. One commenter remarked that he'd be surprised if they used "rooster art" for a "chicken mount," indicating he believed there's a difference between a chicken and a rooster.

Intrigued, I started looking around for what exactly differentiates a rooster from a chicken and I learned that roosters and hens are simply male and female chickens, respectively. There is no non-chicken rooster; all roosters are chickens.

Ok, so what? Well, what I learned in this online exploration, and the reason I'm writing this, is that in the process of trying to learn about chickens vs. roosters, I discovered that this Magic Rooster mount is actually a hen.

See here for the proof. I think it's pretty clear that our Magic "Rooster" doesn't have very pronounced spurs, and really doesn't have much plumage in the trunk (the "sickles" I believe they're called). It's features generally are a little more subdued, like a hen's, and it's coloration matches a hen's (at least this drawn hen; I know hens and rooster come in a variety of colors).

Don't get me wrong. I still love this mount. It is my favorite in the game, and every time I hop on it I giggle with childlike joy. But this little birdie is a hen; no doubt about it.

For the record, this is a hen, not a rooster. Roosters have longer tailfeathers and a larger comb on top of thier head. So, i guess it would be magic if roosters laid eggs.

I’ve had this Mount for many years now and don’t give it enough use of the swift spectral, wish it would fly.

However nothing beats sitting on this Mount as a glorious Boomkin or Orc warrior in Org and getting whisper after whisper asking where it’s from. The large character models just look ridiculous riding it and it’s the best.

Think I paid 45k gold for it.
