A lot of the NR dungeons contain at least 1 boss that does some form of AoE damage. I have a tendency to forget myself in the heat of the battle and this glyph is a *must* if you have that problem as well.
In running through the starting 3 dungeons last night and I don't remember having to heal myself at all. 1 or 2 healing waves on the MT and 1 on a dps'er were enough to keep me capped during all the AoE fights.

The self heal this glyph grants you appearently only heals you on effective heals.
Overhealing does not count towards the 20%.

I'll definitely be using this as pertaining to what cdpang wrote. Lets face it the less you have to worry about yourself the easier it is to heal other people (plus it'll be awesome for 5 man heroics and 10 mans)

Instead of throwing a riptide on yourself (when you need a heal), heal someone with HW that looks low. That way a GCD isn't wasted and someone receives a needed heal.

If you're in a raid, it's likely that another healer will top you up. I can only see this being useful for 5mans, and since it only counts for effective healing, it really isn't very useful for that. I really wouldn't recommend this glyph.
This glyph actually comes in extremely handy for fights with large amounts of raid damage. Alternating Chain Heal then HWx2, you can effectively heal yourself for around 8k without actually having to spend a heal on yourself. This is incredibly useful in fights such as Mimiron P-2, and Hodir Frozen Blows, as the large cost of the spell is offset by the 20% increase in healing being done because of this glyph.
In addition as of patch 3.2, the amount self-healed via the glyph is affected by total healing, not only effective healing. Thus 100% overheals with HW will still give 20% of said overheal to the shaman.

Actually, you should use Riptide then the HW. Since 30% of HW is close to a second, the ripTide speed bonus would mean you'd get the benefit of an extra heal w/o losing more than maybe 0.3s or so.

I'd like to see this changed to a minor glyph. Minors suck for shaman and this would be a solid minor that all shaman could take advantage of.

I love this in PvP, specifically Arena PvP on a Resto Shaman. Since Restos are usually running from enemies while trying to keep their partner up, there are times where we absolutely have to stop to cast off a heal to save our partner. Riptide ourselves, cast healing wave on our partner, and bam -- a good, quick 16k for my partner and 5k+ for the lucky Shammy. Ghost wolf and keep kiting/annoying that bastard chasing you. It may not seem like much at first, but in PvP, every single hitpoint counts.
I haven't found a whole lot of use for this outside of PvP; there are just too many other major glyphs that could replace this to increase your healing efficiency. I understand that some Shaman have issues with keeping themselves up, but this kind of glyph only endorses not learning to keep yourself topped off as well as your party. With glyphs like Lesser Healing Wave/Earth Shield/Chain Heal, the only person you're helping with this is yourself.

During this fight it's impossible to dying if u get a lots of stacks of buff(emerald vigor).

After the new patch, I've found that this glyph is one of the 3 only decent major glyphs. Seeing as how the prime glyphs take over as the main buffing glyphs, i only really had to choose between this, ghost wolf and other more situational glyphs. Since HW is my main spell to cast when no one needs any big heals, or are too spread ot for chain heal, on fights like Marrowgar's Bonestorm, or Blood Princes, this glyph gives me a heal anywhere from 1-4k depending on crits, and it can happen every ~2sec. The fact that it acts as a 3k hps HoT is reason enough for this glyph on any fight with AoE, at least for now. To any resto shammies that are looking for a 3rd major glyph, I would suggest this one as a good all around glyph.

The heal from this glyph double dips from your critical strike chance. The 20% is based on the full amount of a critical Healing Wave, and the heal from the glyph can also crit.

The heal from this glyph is unaffected by healing reduction debuffs. Whatever you heal on the target will always be reflected by 20% on yourself (unless the glyph heal crits).

I see alot of people skipping this glyph for PvP and to some extent PvE aswell
In Wotlk Healing Wave used to be one of the big heals and getting 20% of that healing actually meant something for both PvP and PvE
In Cata Healing Wave got turned into mana effecient low heal so this glyph isnt desired
If this Glyph was affecting Greater Healing wave or hell even Healing Surge it would be great !

Summary:
Glyph and spam the mana efficent Healing Wave to
go from from having 2 Tank HoTs to having
5 Tank HoTs & a Healer HoT
and a crit proced heal on the lowest health party/raid member to better stay ahead in combat... Be less reactive and more proactive.
I am not so sure that the Healing Wave Glyph isn't a bad glyph even in Cata...
Many of the Resto Shaman's benefits kick off randomly per cast of a healing spell...
The more healing casts you do the better the chance of the Procs and thus better chance of keeping good buffs on our targets... For example:
-
EarthLiving:
20% proc per healing cast to put an ~12 second Heal over Time (HoT) on the target;
- Ancestral Healing:
When you crit with a Healing spell, it puts a 15 second buff reducing physical damage by 10% which to me is like a HoT that increases the more physical mobs attacking...
- Ancestral Awakening:
When you crit with a Healing spell, your Ancestral Spirit heals the lowest % health target for for 30% of amount healed.
In my 5 man PVE team I am asking my Resto Shaman to glyph this and, in addition to keeping Earth Shield & Riptide up 100% when the Tank is in combat, to try to ALSO try to keep Ancestral healing & EarthLiving up 100% on the tank by spamming the mana efficent Glyphed Healing Wave. Like other healers in the heat of battles, sometimes our shaman gets behind on the tank or too focused on the tank and doesn't notice they or others are in need healing and things can go bad... Move to being more Proactive than Reactive with more controlled steady healing coming in than reactive bursts and things should only go better...
By glyphing and spamming very mana efficent @ steady Healing Waves on our tank, my hope is that we see the following the vast majority of the time:
- 1T) Constant Earth Sheild "HoT" on Tank (already have this);
- 2T) Constant RipTide "HoT" on Tank (already have this);
- 3T) Constant EarthLiving HoT on Tank (and sometimes on others that get topped off);
- 4T) Constant Ancestral Healing "HoT" on Tank;
- 5T) Spammed Healing Wave itself will be like another Tank HoT of regular healing;
- 1H) "Free" regular self heals (like a Healer Hot) due to this glyph keeping Healer topped off;
- 1P) "Free" random heals on the lowest percentage party/raid member;
My thought is that this will help our Shaman stay ahead of the curve... With Earth Shield & RipTide already being like Tank HoTs, we will move from having 2 Tank HoTs to having 5 Tank HoTs & a Healer HoT and a crit based fairly heal on the lowest health party/raid member...
