I'm leveling a hunter and I just spent half a year trying to do this quest.
Then finally, after I-don't-know-how-many-tries I tried to put my pet on passive and not letting it touch the crocs a single time.
Then it worked. Great Blizzard......

2 minute cool down on the totem makes it looonnnggg if you are running to mobs, placing totem, then killing.

Reccomend placing totem near a group of mobs and pull one at a time into its range.

As a side note: If you are with other people on this quest, everyone should use their totem as it will count the mob for each totem. For example, 1 croc, +2 totems = 2 kills. However, the crocs need to be aggroed on one of the players at the kill. If its on a pet such as warlock's or hunters it will not give credit.

Just to emphasize, you do need to make sure that the player is targeted; if pets have aggro the kill won't count towards the quest.

Seemed to be slightly bugged in a good way when I did it; I got a kill for each croc in range when one died. Had a dead one, had gotten one kill... pulled a second, killed it, had a total of 3 kills, pulled a third, got six total. Ran out of mobs, went and killed one, 7 total kills, second 9, then the last one.

The cooldown on the totem is pretty stupid, as the mobs aren't too hard if you're around lv38. The mobs are reasonably spaced out that you can start fighting one while waiting for the cooldown, then put out the totem once it's ready (instant cast) to get the count.

Im a frostmage and when i went to AoE the crocs, the kills didnt register. I had to solo them for some reason for it to work properly.

When I was on my feral druid, I had to go into Bear Form so I could kill them slower, for some reason, when I was in cat form, it wouldn't register the tests.

If it helps, l think a lot of the problem stems from the fact that theres actually a 'catpured totem' debuff that gets applied. however, it seems to last perhaps 1-2 seconds, then has a 1 second cooldown or so (hard to tell exactly.) What you can do is time your killing blow for most classes till you see the debuff on the croc, then kill. It took me 3-4 crocs to realize that, but l think that may be partly whats interfering with the pet issue.
l'll edit in a minute to find out the debuff name. It sort of looks like a sunset icon at any rate.

Figured out how this Totem works, the crocodile next to it will receive a "Capture Totem" debuff. You MUST kill the crocodile while they have this debuff to get recognition. It goes on and off the target every 1 seconds or so. Kind of stupid I know...

This totem will be provided for the quest 恐怖图腾的武器. Use it nearby either a 尘泥杂斑鳄鱼 or a 尘泥利齿鳄鱼. They'll be affected with the debuff 被捕获的图腾, only then are you good to kill it.
