as an AoE grinding pally i find it quite sad that these are an Alliance only quest, the shield block rating and value are vital stats to AoE grinding and the fact that horde cannot obtain these is quite frustrating. i sincerely hope that blizzard realizes this fact and makes a horde equivalent quest.
There are more than a few items that are alliance or horde specific. It isn't like this is some massive inconvenience. Of course, the stats are really nice, but at the same time, the same can be said for many other pieces.
The quest "Hero of the Mag'har" offers a bunch of really interesting items, that more than a few alliance players have drooled over. Mag'hari Warlord's Legplates are just one of those items. For early tanking legs, they really are rather nice. Ludicrously high stamina (67, a considerable jump from basically everything else available), while also sporting some decent defense rating, and hit rating (not as necessary, but it certainly helps with making sure things like a Paladin's Avengers Shield, or a Warriors Devastate land properly). These are a horde only item. Considering alot of players like aesthetics, as well as stats, it also happens to be the only item that matches the Breastplate of the Warbringer for color and style. These are just one example of horde only items.
Early in the game, Ashenvale offers great horde-only items, that easily outpace most other items available to the alliance. Even earlier, Tranquillien rep items, and the Ghost Lands final quest rewards, are literally the top of their tier. Horde PvP twinks in the 19 range enjoy a massive benefit over their alliance counterparts due to the obscenely powerful, and exceptionally easy to aquire items that any horde player can enjoy with little to no difficulty. Did you cry foul when the Horde gained access to the Tranquillien Champion's Cloak? It has the highest stamina and armor for it's level, giving horde at lower levels easy access to an item that increases your health by a significant amount, and is unmatched in the twinking circuit for HP and armor. Did you cry foul when the horde gained access to the Staff of the Sun, or the Farstrider's Longbow, or the Dawnblade, or the Sin'dorei Warblade? All these items outpace the available gear for alliance players by leaps and bounds in most cases (Staff of the Sun is a little worse than the Twisted Chanter's Staff, which is available to anyone, since it's a world drop, though a rare one).
Yes, I am talking about lower level stuff. I appreciate the fact that these items have absolutely no effect on the gameplay in outlands, and the first level 70 5-man instances. However, it is all simply a matter of available gear. Alliance and Horde players alike have moaned and griped about a lack of this or that item on their faction for years. Everyone seems to do perfectly fine without these items, however. If there happens to be an alliance-only item you want, that doesn't make it a mistake. It just means turn your eyes onto some other item (Thatia's Self-Correcting Gauntlets, for example), and get over it. The entire point for items like this are to push your defenses to the level of uncrushability, effectively giving you access to the raid instances that drop the really nice stuff.
As for these items. They are amazingly nice. The stamina is pretty comparable with other items around this level (Thatia's, Felsteel, etc), and the mitigation stats it offers make these prime for anyone looking to tank. Personally, I play a paladin, and I'll say that the block value is superb. It really starts to stack up when you're tanking 3-6 targets at a time. Nearly 50 less damage every shot really makes me a happy camper when it comes time to take the shots. And considering I already had 518 defense skill with my felsteel gloves on, I figured it was worth the trade off. 2.77% increase to shield block, with a 1.2% decrease spread between dodge, parry and miss. If you're already uncrushable, it's not really worth it. The 0.4% you loose from the other 3 defenses doesn't seem like alot, but it can be noticed. That, and Felsteel can be socketed for higher HP than these can be. But if you're still struggling towards that uncrushable level, the increase you gain from these could definately help your push.
Does anyone know if this matches a set or not (or at least some gear with a similar design)? And if so, which one?
REALLY wishing I didnt sell these gloves.
