Only comes every sunday from 2pm to 4pm
First to catch 40 of these Tastyfish will win the first price
a fishing rod or a trinket.
I believe all you need is 130 fishing to throw a line in Stranglethorne Waters. There is no minimum skill level, or even character level.
All of Stranglethorn Vale is at 130 Fishing. That is what is required to cast. At Skill Level 200 or so, you will be high enough to not have the "Your Fish Got Away" messages.
During the Tournament, a no catch is lost time and time your opponent has caught one. Time spent applying a lure is lost time also. To participate and have a higher chance of winning, I would recommend 235 or more Skill.
Is there Speckled TastyFish Pools or does it become a Trash fish?
Um... am i the only one to notice that because you can only catch these in pools... the WoWHead map that pinpoints where the ALL the pools are? Uh... just to give a hint... Oh boy! i hope you dont use this map of all the pools to find a good place to fish! ; P
All you alliance scrubs on Burning Blade better back off, cause these fish are mine!
The tastyfish are in special pools, they can not be fished from outside the pools. Each pool has 5 drops, if your fish gets away you do not expend a drop. If you catch stranglekelp or a rockscale eel instead from the pool, you expend a drop.
Even after the contest is over (just watch the 4 hour duration on the fish) you can turn in these in batches of five to a NPC in Booty Bay. They yield 23s / batch giving them a "sell price" of 4s60c each.
Although the contest runs from 2:00-4:00pm, competition sharply drops after a winner is announced. If the goal for low-level toons is to get the
Lucky Fishing Hat
, cash from fishing or other prizes from
, Consider starting around 2:30pm. It's a LOT easier.
All the competitors have gone home. No offended players will be dumping mobs onto your character. During the competition, a rogue with Vanish, or a Paladin with Divine Intervention can drop mobs on small fragile characters, at-will.
Why is there hostility vs. the level 19s?
To understand where this hostility comes from, watch the general channel, when the winner is announced. There are invariably several people who lament that they were within 1-2 fish. There is only
one winner per week
, claiming either the
Hook of the Master Angler
Arcanite Fishing Pole
. Competition is intense.
It's acceptable to lose because someone else was better. However, people will feel cheated, when a little level 19 tag-along was underfoot, sneaking fish out from under them. Intensify this with the reigning opinion that level 19 battleground twinks are unethically exploiting the system. There's just as much satisfaction dropping a mob on a twink, as dropping one on a gold farmer.
Nice fishing spots for lowbies
When the contest is completed, the spawn points will largely be ignored by anyone else. The Troll island around (11, 29) has no hostile mobs. Its easily reachable from Westfall. The respawn rate is fairly quick.
Fly or swim down to Booty Bay. Set your hearthstone. Fly back to Westfall. Swim down the coast to the Troll island. Stay clear of the elite shark that roams around the deep water, surrounding the island.
. They're low-cost, and will boost fishing skill by +75.
Put the following simple macro on your toolbar. It'll display a counter, after the first one appears in your bag.

As of 2.3, you now get 1g (or 1g 12s @ lvl 70) for turning in 5 of these once the contest is over.
By the way: Schools of Tastyfish will unfortunately NOT appear on your minimap as yellow dots if you have the Find Fish skill like all other schools of fish. Thus you have to rely on spotting the fish in the water itself.
This item is part of the Stranglethorn Vale Fishing Competition. Which takes place every Sunday between 14:00 and 16:00 Server time.
These are the items that can be won if you are the first person to hand in 40

--> Dual wielding Fish Power!!
I just entered this contest for the 1st time ever, as in i've never tried to compete before. I had 225 fishing skill, and i won on that first go :P So just goes to show a little luck and preparation beforehand and anyone can win this. I choose to start on the coast directly south of grom'gol, and i had loads of pools spawn around me within a 50yrd radius i'd say. Within the first 10 minutes i had about 28 tastyfish. Also the Find Fish tool really helps for planning your next move if u can see a pool is just around the corner from u on the minimap.
As with other non-edible fish, these do NOT count towards the achievements to catch X number of fish.
Are there any "waters" in STV where the Tastyfish do not spawn? Thinking about trying to find some out-of-the-way place, but don't want to hose myself if they're only along one particluar coastline, etc.
Keep in mind if you're not 70-80 you
get ganked. Get someone high level to protect you and/or revive you if you die.
It's really annoying to keep dying when some stupid alliance ganks you :(
As with other non-edible fish, these do NOT count towards the achievements to catch X number of fish.
Actually these DO count towards the x number of fish achievements, at least as of the latest patch.
does the timer on the fish freeze when you log out?
On high pop servers, this event can be very competitive. Players sometimes team up together so that one would fish, others would pvp, and others would jump in front of other people's bobbers so they can't catch anything.
If you're thinking about doing this, you might want to ask a friend or two to come along, at least to help scout for fishing nodes or protect you if you're on a pvp server.
One thing I would suggest: Set a hotkey to your 'fishing skill' (cast). That way you can keep one hand on your mouse, keeping your pointer close to the fishing bobber, and use the other hand on the keyboard to cast repeatedly, without having to move the pointer away from your bobber, onto your hotkey bar.
It may only save a little time, but in the competition every second counts, and when you have to cast repeatedly to get it in the middle of the pool (my Sibi's aim seems to suck bigtime at times) it can definately save you precious moments.
Just in case anybody here is wondering,
you CAN still attempt to win this tournament while hated with Booty Bay
. The three NPCs that grab your turn-ins are all still friendly to my character.
Just lost today, had 2 people following me and jumping in my pool, also they were challenging me to duels while I'm fishing.
O and got spammed by them too.
Really really $%^&ed off.
First time ever I did this I started out with 450 fishing skill, had the whole "weather beaten hat" but didn't use it here, and the only 2 helpful things were Water Walking pots and fish finding. On my server me and a friend went up to the area of the zandalari tribe and went from that island, down and up the coast, the island south of the zandalari tribe, and back to the starting island. I may have gotten lucky with people not being where I was, nor my friend was, but pools spawned right along the path of interest and I beat my friend by 10 fish within 15 minutes and got the deal which turns you into a fish (fun if you have the titanium flipping coin and some neat looking weapons ;D )
PS. I used Nat's Lucky Fishing Pole (25+ fishing), no lures.
If I had just one last wish, I would like a tasty fish
Adam Douglas' The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy
Could be a reference, shouldn't be the first one ;)
I just won today. The things I planned before I went was to have a friend with a two person mount and water walking sit besides me and get ready for me to hop on and speed to the next fishing pool. It would be more helpful if you had a paladin with crusader aura up. This cut out mounting cast time. I also had a rogue scout ahead and mark out the pools I would be using next and eliminate any alliance. I fished from the pools just North of Grom'Gol base camp. Most of the people will sit close to mid range of booty bay on my server Stormscale <PvP>. We only ran into two alliance and zero horde. And luck is a huge part of winning. I fished up on average 2 trash drops v. tasty fish a pool. Pray to the wow gods for your bobber to land mid circle and the right catch. Good luck to you!
Ok I have tried for two Sundays to do this darn thing and I cannot find any pools of these fish anywhere and I've ran up and down the coasts. Is there something that I am missing here? I am a grand master fisherman so i am not sure what the problem is.
So my Boyfriend won the Northrend fishing contest on Saturday and I sat here seething with anger... If he had the title "Salty" then I had to have it too so I thought I would give the Booty Bay fishing contest a go the following day.
My lovely fella was "requested" to sit beside me as I fished in his multi passenger mammoth so I could hop in as soon as my pool had dissapeared and he could swiflty escort me to the next pool with a handy water walking pot.... and lo and behold... I WON!
First ever go at it and im damn chuffed... I am so damn chuffed I have spent many hours swimming around in the Dalaran fountain with my fish trinket equipped lol.
I simply fished pools around the Yojamba Isle, North West of STV, loads of pools and a very fast respawn on them, also no competition whatsoever. I did pop to Booty Bay though the night before and set my HS there which was lucky as I had a Sunday morning lie in and never woke up until 12:50 pm lol.
Good Luck with this one and I hope you have as much fun with the trinket as I have done lol.
Kyd, Terenas EU, Belf Holy Paladin
I just competed in my first tournament, and I have to say ... what a horribly buggy mess. Pools changed names while you fished them and names even changed when you changed your angle (no pun intended) of view!
I also found pools inside land, before the tournament, but they were not fishable.
Something must have gone a bit haywire in one of the recent updates.
Note that the damn map is displaced by a fair bit. It cost me the victory today because I started way off. In the end I was 5 fishes behind the winner :<
I just caught some of these late Sunday from a school that was under a regular debris school. The NPC is gone for the day so I can't turn them in. Looks like a bug in clearing out the schools when the tournament ends.
I just caught 4 of these in some wreckage, Mon 12/13/10 @ 4:22 AM ST
Is this a bug or has something changed in the competition?
For some insane reason, there are still pools of these dotted around on a Monday. They work.
If only they didnt have a duration.
Apparently the pools will all be phased out from you if you have not quested in the zone, 2 weeks in a row I've flown up and down the coast during the tourney and seen 0 pools.
Same thing happening to me right now. I can see the schools on the border of the Cape and Northern but as soon as I cross over they disappear.
I like a challenge but this is far beyond, twice i have gotten to 21 fish and the other person has 40. Unreal luck. Sure glad it's nothing really worth crying over lol. 525 fishing already...i'll go back to farming rares now that they are easy to find, thanks again blizz for that nerf!
Ok, can someone explain to me how is this possible: I just played the tournament, and this guy won by catching all 40 fish...in 19 MINUTES! HOW? It took me 1 hour and 40 minutes to catch my 40! Was he using some super powerful fishing pole that I don't know about!
I need a moment of catharsis here. I got 39 tasty fish, then a couple firefin snappers and a stranglekelp (if I ever meet a RNG in a dark alley...). Got my 40th tastyfish and then some other dude won while I was hearthing. I think I may have said a few "salty" words before I got control of my mouth. The winner gave me a free portal back to Stormwind, showing that he's a good winner though.
Fishing out of these schools does count for
had 3400 and fishing out 3405 out of a school of tasty fish, so yay for more then one achiev!
With a name like this, I'm surprised these fish haven't gone extinct yet, like the lamented Cake-o-saurus or the well known Gummibears.
These no longer have pools of their own and instead inhabit existing pools during the tournament.
Also got this my first serious try through.
Set hearth. I still had 5 fish to go when they called 1st place, got 2nd and 3rd was a few minutes behind that. Don't stop at 1st - not everyone will realize they give 3 per server now and even people that are close may give up at that point.
You will get the yell for all 3 prizes, for your server only.
Please note, Bloodsail Wreckage give
, do not skip these!
Also, you are able to win twice in a day, meaning, if you won first or second and it seems like no one else is fishing, don't stop, you can get another 40 to win again.
Winning twice in a day worked for me as of 5.3.
Edit: I meant that you are able to win 1st, and/or 2nd, and/or 3rd in one day. Sorry for the misunderstanding
Look at the map above for Northern Stranglethorn. There is a river up the middle, which takes in the Venture Co. Basecamp. The fishing pools in the river also drop the Speckled Tastyfish. Due to the nature of cross realm you will sadly not be alone but... the opposite faction are generally disinterested.
This is how I was able to win it today. It seems that those interested in spoiling things will go to the more obvious coastal areas.
In particular the end of the river north of, and past the Venture Co, is very very quiet. You can stay here patrolling the area for spawns and win it!
The Speckled Tastyfish are NOT marked on the map in the area I am discussing. Trust me on this.
When it got crowded and I was oh-so-close to my 40 fish, I went coastal, and died twice. Flew back to the river and continued, cursing myself for being impatient. Lucky it didn't cost me.
I hope this works for you.
Something to make things clear: The awarding of prizes is on a SERVER basis. Don't worry if you see chat with someone boasting of winning IF they are from another server. Just keep going! Expect the first actual winner to be around the twelve to twenty minutes mark.
With good RNG, no crates fished, no other fish, clean casts and so on, twelve minutes is a reasonable expectation.
Assuming you hearthed or used
to get back to the Booty Bay bar, run forward to the doorway, sharp U-turn to the left, run forward to
. Complete Quest by selecting the
and only then is the FIRST prize yelled out to chat.
Try a practice run.
You don't want to be targeting the wrong NPC, running into anything, falling in the water (lol) in your haste to grab the prize. You must have made your decision on the prize already. The two prizes I listed are the only ones exclusively available for the 1st place getter. Other available prizes can also be gotten for 2nd or maybe 3rd.
Most people quit after second is announced so even if you have just got 1st or 2nd or missed out on them, why not try for 3rd? Sure you may end up with a lot of
but it is useful for your collection of fishing poles, you dedicated angler you!
Latest edit: With the combining of servers, progress can be even more cutthroat. An extreme measure I have seen employed is to partially fish pools in areas you do NOT intend to fish. You do this in the 30 minutes prior to the start of the competition. This will cause a player to waste valuable time having to mount up and move, more often than would normally be necessary. Time flying is wasted fishing time after all. In the spirit of fair play? You be the judge when you repeatedly fish only 1 or two from each pool, sigh.
A note to all fishers:
Don't mind the brain dead Alliance that camp Grom Gol Base Camp for no reason during the event, other than to stop people from fishing. They were born deficient in brain cells, and about 90% are still yet to locate their dads.
Two tips that helped me win:
My fishing location was the river in Northern Stranglethorn between Duskwood and the Venture Co Base Camp. The highest concentration of pools was right near the dock at Nesingwary's Expedition. I just flew back and forth up and down the river. I traversed the length of the river one and a half times before catching 40 fish.
On my server, the contest starts at 5 PM. At 5:00:00 I was at my first pool ready to cast, but the /yell didn't come through chat. I wasn't sure if the contest started at 5 or at the /yell, so I started casting. The /yell came while my first cast was in the water, and when I looted that bobber it had a Tastyfish. So either the contest starts exactly at 5:00 even if the /yell hasn't happened, or you can catch a Tastyfish if you already have the line in the water when the /yell comes through.
In case any one was wondering:
For a 14:00 start time, 1st place is usually awarded somewhere between 14:11 and 14:14, with 2nd and 3rd place not usually later than 14:20. This does not stop you fishing up rare fish like
I have won multiple times for various rewards and caught all of the rare fish.
Fishing amongst others makes very little difference if you know your cast distances to the edge of the pools, recast quickly when you miss and can mount up quickly as you see the pool fade away. Due to the respawn rate it is all reasonably consistent, so remain relaxed, count your fish and hearth to booty bay when you get 40.
Has anyone tried to fish these from the pools created by
Bobwise and Taraezor have great advice. The lake running down the middle of Northern ST is full of
pools at a 2-pool spawn-rate - that is, a new node would pop up when you have fully fished 2 other pools.
I can only tell you what worked for me. When the clock struck 14:00 server time, I have cast a line into a pool on the shores of the lake where the Venture Co building is in NST. Just before I reeled in a
, the yell for the competition to start came through.
I fished solely in that lake. It was able to accommodate three other anglers with its great spawn-rate, and for the 40 fishes I never needed to leave and find another area upstream or down. I handed in the stacks around 14:15. Competition was around 25 people (Server - WRA).
Some ideas that worked for me:
1. Get the ability
. Look it up in wowhead - it requires you to fish in wreckage and open trunks to obtain a
. There's a small island in the northwest portion of NST, with some sites. This is crucial to minimising downtime and utilising resources that would be hard to find for others. Give yourself that edge.
2. Keybind your fishing, water walking potions/skills, and your flying mount. You want these to go off as quickly as you want them to.
3. Get at least Epic flying (280%) or a Druid - they cut down on travel time and not insignificantly so. Winners could be seconds apart!
4. Get familiar with fishing. What I mean by that is you want to land after flying, on a spot where your casts are likely to land in a pool. That's a bit of distance judgement. You should also get used to recasting immediately when you feel the bob isn't close enough to the pool, and react to splashes immediately.
5. Spec for speed boosts or prep for bursts of movement. Sometimes the next pool is at a distance not practical to mount and fly up. Talents that give snap run speed like
, can earn you precious seconds to compete at a pool.
6. Which brings me to competing. You should count how many fishes remain in a pool, where you have fished and should it have respawned, and where your fellow anglers are. Pan around as you fish and plan your next move. Keep track of time, fish, pools, people.
7. Luck. After I got my first
, I fished out two
. I waited around 18 seconds for my first 20 catches... Then less than 10 seconds for most of those after. People were also in too much of a hurry to check the sides of the lake or count and time their fished nodes to make use of the tightly grouped pools. If you don't succeed at first, keep calm and carry on. I did! (To steady nerves, I mentally counted down each cast.)
8. Around half an hour before it starts you might want to make a trial run, scouting out pools and emulating the final hearth-and-dash. When you hearth to Booty Bay (you have set it there, haven't you?), you turn around out the door, turn left hard and you'll meet the announcer. You might want to Nitro Boost out of the Inn... But don't go over the edge the NPCs have their backs to...
Good luck to anglers out there who, like me, have coveted the achievement of
for a time. Since the advice here have helped me with mine, I will now try to assist you with yours.
Just remember to make sure you're not going of local time when heading off to STV, or you might find you've arrived a tad late...
This wasn't too bad this week. Not sure if next week will be worse, but I was able to get 1st Place on my primary Realm (Busy Population) and like 2nd Place on lower Population realm. (Picked Pirate Ring I had been trying to get for a VERY long time).
I also started 15 minutes late. So the new model of 50 First Place Winners per Realm seems pretty solid I think.
After handing in and getting 2 or 3? I could no longer catch the fish, was hoping to get one of the rares but gave up.
Seems very buggy. I caught my 40 fish, but when the World Quest was done they just all disappeared. I couldn't even hand them in to Jang, they were just gone.
So I'm on Dalaran-US and I don't think the Tournament works. Was fishing for 45 mins straight and not one fish.
The tournament time starts at 2pm PST confirmed by GM and me being there when it started.
I'm not catching any tastyfish in the pools. only mixed ocean. Is it broken?
Even if the first 50 people get the reward that doesnt mean its easy and you have about 15 minutes to get your 40 fish or else are likely to lose.
Something very ..fishy happened today. The NPC started yelling "contest is over" multiple times in the same 2 to 3 seconds (!). It felt like a multiboxer or other exploit did it but I can't be certain how it worked but it was definitely wrong because I went with a Highmountain Tauren and I only got ~20 fish without having that much downtime.
I was at my ready spot school when the tournament started, but I never got a counter or any Tastyfish. I fished for 30 minutes & never saw tournament over, so kept trying but only caught Firefins and Blackmouths then gave up. Don't know if it is a bug, but it should be fixed whatever it is. Has this happened to anyone else lately?
I just won first place on my server! (yay!) Unfortunately, when doing the
STV Fishing Contest
Master Angler of Azeroth
I came across some problems and I'm hoping I can prevent others from making similar mistakes. Here's a few little pro-tips to ensure you get your shiny new
Dread Pirate Ring
and that ever so coveted
First off, make sure you get the
I showed up about 2 hours early lol,
but at least I wasn't late!
I saw some mixed answers in other Wowhead comment threads and in Google searches and such. I assumed the contest would start at 2pm
and found out shortly after getting there that I was wrong, it in fact
Secondly, bring some form of
Some of the pools you need to fish from can be difficult to reach, especially if you're a shorter race like gnome, goblin, or vulpera. I personally just bought some
Elixir of Water Walking
Draenic Water Walking Elixir
off the AH. There was only a few of each up on my server so I bought a couple of both. You won't need more than 3-4 at the absolute max, but I ended up only using 2.
Third, buff up that
as much as you can.
The chance of catching
is increased based on your total fishing skill, including increases from lures and such. I personally have been fishing a lot in my Garrison lately so I went in with my
Weather-Beaten Fishing Hat
that I got from there and
"The Broker's Angle'r"
which you can just buy from any
Shadowlands Fishing Trainer
. Those two items add a flat 20 fishing skill on top of whatever you already have, plus the hat has an on use effect that will put a lure on your fishing pole for 10mins which adds another 7 fishing skill (which could be higher, but
will cost you more gold.)
Fourth, set your
to Booty Bay.
This is sincerely the fastest way to get back to the quest giver once you've got your 40 fish. It's not super important on lower pop servers but it does save some precious time. To those on higher pop servers, this may be the one thing that sets you ahead of your competition.
Last but certainly not least,
TURN ON WARMODE
I play on a relatively quiet server and even showing up 2hrs early to the contest I ran into about a dozen other people preparing for the event. I was terrified of the competition so before I went back at the right time I turned on WM, thinking that anyone else competitively fishing while being prone to ganking is crazy lol. Thankfully I ended up being perfectly fine, I didn't see a single other player for the entire 14 minutes that I was fishing. There wasn't even anyone around the quest giver when I got there and didn't see anyone before I left.
I hope this is helpful, and if you have any more questions about either the
STV Fishing Contest
or any other achievements related to
Master Angler of Azeroth
just reply to this comment and I'll do my best to answer. If this was helpful to you, I would really appreciate it if you left a like so others can also find this information later.
Thank you so much, and happy fishing!
Waste Not Want Not
racial ability can provide additional catches of these during the event.
Low sample size, but the ability has provided me with an average of 4 extra Tastyfish per event so far, about an extra (uncontested) fishing pool's worth, which is certainly not insignificant.
