The 30% aspect of this trinket makes it very underwhelming IMO. By the time your tank is in that zone you're already casting an emergency heal that would bring him out of it.
I very much disagree with the comments above. This trinket is excellent. Yes it will not pump out numbers on a target dummy, but we are healers, not dps. Our goal is to prevent people from dying, not pump out the biggest number on recount we possibly can, and this trinket is excellent at doing exactly that.
This trinket works incredibly well on PASSIVE healing, not active. Passive healing is healing that happens without you needing to specifically press a button for it, like Healing stream totem running, Prayer of mending bouncing around, druid's efflorence, HoTs etc. This trinket procs on EVERYTHING, if a person recieves even 1 point of hp from your character in any way, this trinket will proc.
When things hit the fan, everyone is dying, sometimes you cant even stop and cast because you have to do a fight mechanism, and you have a precious few gcds to use, the first person in your group to dip below 30%, will be taken to 40% (or 50% as this trinket can crit) instantly, without you needing to press anything, while youre spending those precious few seconds casting your aoe heals.
That being said, some classes can leverage this trinket better than others, namely classes with more passive than active healing. I myself am playing a shaman, and between healing stream totem, healing rain, earth shield, and 2-4 riptides ticking, it is safe to say this trinket procs IMMEDIATELY when ANYONE in the group drops below 30%, even when big aoe cds like healing tide or acsendance are not up.
I would imagine a holy paladin would be way less happy with this trinket, as judgement of light, if talented, is their only form of passive healing, and light of dawn their only aoe. But for me, this trinket literally gives
to my entire party on a shared cd.
The "problem" with this trinket that makes people dislike it, is that it doesn't show up on your character sheet so you can get excited ("woah! trinket proc, i have 55% crit now!"), nor does it pump recount numbers. At the end of the fight this trinket will be 0.8% of your healing at best. BUT, it heals exactly where and when it matters. If there was a way to count on recount how many people died in a run with and without this trinket, you would view it differently.
The only situation where this trinket might be underwhelming is if you find yourself often spamming flash heals on your tank and still being unable to hold him. In practice, in a typical run, this item will make the biggest difference than any other single item at reducing the total number of deaths for your party.
As far as using it goes, i just made a simple macro /cast riptide /use SPS and replaced my riptide button with it so it is always up. The self damage cannot kill you. One curious thing i noticed, is that when self casting this macro, the damage always comes second, even if you put /use SPS first and riptide second. Therefore, if you use this while at full hp, you always end up damaged. However, If you selfcast this macro while below 30%, the trinket's heal procs on you on the same button press, so it hits you for 1300 and immediately heals you for 2500. The self damage can also crit for ~2300. As such, even in the worst case scenario where you are badly damaged yourself, the buff runs out the exact moment before procing, the self damage crits, but the heal doesn't, the trinket is STILL a net gain on hp, so theres no reason to hold on to using it because youre low on hp, ever.
TL:DR: this trinket helps you SO much at doing your job as a healer, i would specifically farm for it at any ilvl. Just macro it in with your most used ability so you never forget to have it up, and enjoy.
What an excellent trinket - to compare to BfA trinkets to show how badly dungeon trinkets have been designed this expansion.
Let's take another healing trinket from BfA with a similar idea of sacrificing HP for healing:
Mirror of Entwined Fate
First thing you should notice is that Mirror of Entwined Fate heals for
more HP despite being a trinket from last expansion. Yes, it has 1/4 the uptime as Phylactery, but even accounting for 4 uses of Phylactery, it's still contributing less healing. Second thing you should notice is that the Mirror has a healing absorption on it rather than straight damage taken, not that big of a deal but a nice plus. Then we get to the healing gained for damage taken... and the Mirror absolutely
the Phylactery in that regard. Phylactery is 2x the damage taken in the form of a heal that can only activate on targets below 30% that you are healing while the Mirror is
15x the healing absorbed instantly
This trinket (and many others in Shadowlands dungeons) are so bad that some players are still using the BfA trinkets. What's wild is that the raid trinkets for healers are all pretty great, which means that the dungeon trinkets have been designed to be intentionally bad. (Either that or they had two completely different teams working on raid and dungeon trinkets and they never communicated to figure out what the baseline should be...)
This trinket is great. Just macro it to an ability that you use every 30 seconds or less and reap the benefits.
It might seem underwhelming, but the short 30 second cooldown combined with it only activating on a target with <30% health means ALOT of free, almost entirely effective healing.
As others have suggested I added this to my Rejuv macro so whenever that is cast I take the damage and fill the shard. It does proc then on whatever heals I have out so will naturally have a high chance to hit immediately when the first person drops.
Feels like a useful trinket in my mind but I’m sure everyone has a view, but everyone has a different play style.
This trinket triggers form any heal; tick, aoe and direct. as a resto shaman this trinket has saved countless lives in my m+ runs. when you throw an emergency heal on your tank the trinket can proc from a tick off riptide on a low hp dps.
one thing to note the proc sends out a wisp-like orb to the target and has a travel time of about a second
Testing on myself, I have found that
this trinket will not proc if your heal brings the target above 30%
. That is, it checks the target's health after your heal.
the damage can crit on you
Being the l33t player I am, I macroed this into another heal. I am not sure I'm smart enough to get any sort of efficient use manually.
On a +10 MoTS, it (Phylactery Restoration) did 2.1% of my healing for ~96k.
