The tooltip say that it can be looted also from honorable kills. Have to check that
So collecting these items seems to be the main obstacle in upgrading your void focus and eventually being able to craft 470 gear.
You can get them various sources such as battlegrounds, arena, world bosses, raid bosses and maybe other sources as well.
But surely there is some kind of cap regarding how many you can obtain per reset?
Perhaps a soft cap from each source? Or maybe a soft cap from all sources together?
Is there any info on this?
Ok, This is related in some way to the possibility of crafting 470 gear.
This is the full explanation
First, go to any of the Assault zones and kill mobs, from any random you will end looting Recipe: Void Focus
Continue killing mobs in assaults to loot 10x Void Focus Splinter
, droprate is not a cake btw.
While farming mobs, you're also looking for your Profession patterns. If you've collect 10x
and haven't gotten your patterns,
keep farming even more N'Zoth mobs!
Remember to take use of all your available time inside
to kill mobs as in those scenarios the drop rate is suposed to be good.
Second, you will start a serie of quest.
After crafting Void Focus
you will start the quest
Something in Your Mind, just hand in and NormalLevelGear will
be unlocked for craft to you.
Next two quest are to farm
You will start with
to loot x20 that will unlock HeroicLevelGear to craft and later you will continue with
to loot x200
that will unlock MythicLevelGear to craft.
As the tooltip says Shred of Insanity can be looted from various activities ingame: from bosses in Ny'alotha and World Bosses, obtained by
winning Battlegrounds and Arenas, or from Honorable Kills.
World boss and Normal raid boss will grant one
per weekly kill
Heroic raid boss is 10
per weekly kill and Mythic raid boss 20
Arenas and Batlegrounds has a % to come
as reward after a win.
World PvP - Low chance from a Honorable Kill.

No info on if these drop in lfr?
Does any BFA heroic boss count?
Can confirm these drop from honor kills, got one from world PvP in vale.
Not dropping from World boss Today in Nazjatar.
Clarify world boss and normal raid boss. At 1 a week, it would take 20 weeks!
If i do normal raid boss and then heroic raid boss in the same week will i drop 11 of these? or just 1?
This is all?
I got one from the end of a random battleground (we won, not sure if it matters).
Does this drop from Arena skirmish or only rated?
Got one from Brawl win
Why do these drop from just about every major source besides 5mans? I can't for the life of my comprehend why. Doing a normal BG gives you progression towards crafted gear but M+ doesn't? What the F?
Trash for anyone who happens to have a crafting profession for gear they can't use. My hunter is a blacksmith, but the only gear that can be made with these is BoP, meaning, much like the 440 gear from before, nothing I can do with it even if I do craft it. A complete waste and blizz still hasn't realized this. ***EDIT: It would be interesting if people who downvote would explain why, there is nothing stated here that is incorrect. Why wasn't the gear made BOA at least?
2 Wintergrasp and 1 Isle of Conquest gave 20.
these seem to have deminished returns if you're farming them pvp.
started out getting about 5 per 15-20 minute aoe-fest in epic bg's with 2 guarenteed at win
today ive gotten 4 in an hour and only 1 for a win
in raids, these aren't pushloot that instantly goes to your bags, you have to loot from the boss
if you're already locked to the boss from before getting the quest, then you outta there until next week
in BG they instantly loot to your bags on kill
If you have already killed the new N'zoth assault world boss prior to getting to this quest. You will not receive a Shred of Insanity if you re-kill the boss.
As of 29.01.20 EU they seem to have a daily cap from PvP or something in place? Got 2 from a BG win and afterwards none from multiple wins in BG and Arena.
Seem to drop 'again' so it's only some wild RNG. Takes quite some time through normal BGs.
In other words, play the game* and you can craft high level items.
*Our game, our rules. Don't go thinking you can just, you know, have fun your way. Crafting is for 1337 hardcore only.
I don't PvP (rules out arena and BG), run Mythic anything (worst design feature) or raid. So it's very sparse 8.3 WB or gfy.
Doesnt drop from Honorkills for me anymore since wednesday.
Only from BG wins. (150/200)
Got some from arena. This is all on a very low rating (sub 1500)
I'm not a pvper by any means, just getting the weekly chest
3v3 arena seems to drop 1 every win - won games 6 and got 6 Shred of Insanity
2v2 around every 1-2 wins or so - won games 10 got 8 Shred of Insanity
Does LFR give these?
For clarity, I thought I would compile some data from various sources to answers some questions about where to get these! This data is accurate as of February 20, 2020.
The below data as mentioned has been compiled; feel free to comment if you have noticed anything different from what is listed below.
The sources of
include the following:
: Has a chance to drop 1
: Drops 1
: Drops 10
: Drops 20
You can earn these on multiple difficulties to maximize earnings - e.g. Killing a boss on both Normal and Heroic difficulties would award a total of 11
World Boss (Uldum -
/Vale of Eternal Blossoms -
per weekly kill
: Honorable kills within Battlegrounds have a
chance to drop a
Note that these are not capped, and you can obtain multiple per day.
: ~50% chance to get 1
: ~70% chance to get 1
: Close to 100% chance to get 1
collected those from BGs today so they still drop there
These drop from brawls as well, I get around 3 per win in Southshore vs. Tarren Mill in winning games, not perfect but makes it doable while going for HK achievement as well
As someone who doesn't raid or do PvP, my only source is the N'zoth assault world boss, which means it'll take me a minimum of 20 weeks to farm this. FFS.
Why don't you put this inside m+ chests too?
Last night I did the Brawl: Ashran Classic which is this week's brawl as I write this. 1-1½ hours later I found 9 shreds in my pocket. Not bad imho. When that is said. We also kept hammering down the opposing faction which may explain the amount.
Brawl: Comp Stomp event rewards 1 for every win considering it's a short 5 minute or less pvp battle and less than 1 minute que times, you'll be racking up in no time!
Drop rate is incredibly random:
I get about 6-9 per victory in Wintergrasp on my Demon Hunter, mostly from HKs. Meanwhile, my friend on a Mage gets only 1 or 2 per win. We're both at the
Looks like 3v3 arenas are 100% drop rate on win.
Some people might have suddenly noticed this in their bag and would like to know what it is. Some people do pick up quests and don't really regard them for some time, so this comment is for you.
For those that do not know what this item is doing your bag, likely after a BG or killing a world boss, these shreds of insanity are to complete the quest
Look in your quest log. You have accepted this quest, which requires 20 Shred of Insanity in order to complete.
If you are no longer getting these drop from HKs in battlegrounds I can confirm that if you abandon the quest and pick it back up again they will resume dropping!
lose the shreds you already have!
This works for the
I had 0 drops over the weekend from 12ish battlegrounds (other then wins), after doing a bit of reading of people claiming either way, I tried it on another character who had only got the quest this week, and I got 12 drop from a Battle for Wintergrasp.
So I dropped the quest on that character and still had the shreds in my bags, logged to my main and did the same (who had about 71 already), first battleground I did and I starting getting the shreds drop from HKs again.
I can also confirm you still get shreds without getting the killing blow.
Can I just say, the majority of people don't know that you get something like 10 per boss on Heroic Nya'lotha. That's the best method I've found for farming them. GGs
I can absolutely confirm that if you aren't getting any shred of insanity from PVP you should abandon and repick it up. I went over 30 battlegrounds/brawls without getting any for kills (just from victory) and I am now getting an average of 2 per 5 minute brawl (3 including a win).
Wanna farm these fast ? Que for Random EPIC battleground, pray you get Ashran and if you are a tank and do the objectives, you get alot more then just the 1 per win. Just finished an Ashran fight and gained 5 Shreds.. Freaking amazing!
With Brawls & Epic BG's you can get much more than what other posts are saying. I think it depends on how many HK's you get. I just did a Brawl & got x4 Shreds and in an Epic I got x6 Shreds, but in both I got a ton of HK's.
Anyways in 2 days of farming Brawls & Epic BG's I have x170 Shreds.
As a PVE player I find it absolute horrible that in a game not mend solely for PVP I get pressured to do so in order to get professions done .
Blizz should give equal opportunities to do them without having to do PVP content and visa versa for the PVP players.
A balance is in order hopefully in some point this will be done.
Forcing Players to do content they don't enjoy in order to progress shouldn't be in a beloved game like WOW it should be fun and entertaining.
Yesterday, I got a Shred of Insanity from defeating
in Stormsong Valley. About five minutes ago, I got a Shred of Insanity from defeating
Grand Empress Shek'zara
in the Vale of Eternal Blossoms.
Edit: I defeated
today (iow the third day in a row) and didn't get a Shred of Insanity so I guess that the rule is
one shred per week from World Bosses
and the week resets between Saturday and Sunday,
Edit #2: Yesterday (2020-09-02) I defeated
The WInged Typhoon
but did not receive a shred. I then went to Pandaria and defeated
Grand Empress Shek'zara
and got a shred. So the drop is clearly related to which boss you defeat.
Does anyone know if you need to be on the quest for these to drop?
Im not a heroic or mythic raider so getting these is kinda slow and my log is clogged with quests like these
I seem to be getting these in Shadowlands? Most likely from Battlegrounds; just started doing BGs today and haven't seen them until today. Weird. Hopefully they'll be good for something in SL, but I doubt it?
as of lvl 60 these no longer seem to drop in shadowlands making the quest impossible to complete
Oddly enough had one of these drop from Ti'or in Maldraxxus.
Guys, i had the same problem i dropped no shards.
abandonded the quest, reaccepted it
and i dropped my first shard. (i think it was from bg)
The progress doesn´t reset when cancel the quest.
Will try nyaloth later if this works too.
You are still able to get these in Shadowlands, they still come from Honorable Kills, doing Epic Battlegrounds is therefore the best source. I picked up the quest now in Shadowlands and completed it within around 10 Epic BGs, the battlegrounds where most amount of fighting occurs is the best, so Ashran, Alterac Valley if you start fighting the opposite team instead of going for the boss kill, Wintergrasp if you're on defense and winning and Isle of Conquest if both teams go docks at the start, not much large scale fighting usually happens after that, so not that good of a BG for HKs.
Remember that you are only after Honorable Kills, winning is not important for this purpose, playing back a bit and not diving into combat and getting killed is the best way to ensure you are present when the opposite team's players die, killing blows are not important.
Two weeks ago I abandoned the quest, picked it back up and started slowly getting Shreds from Battlegrounds again. This week I have received Shreds from BOTH Heroic and Mythic Nyalotha. Note: You do not lose your current Shreds when abandoning the quest.
Can confirm these do NOT drop from world bosses. I just took out Ji'arak in Zuldazar and only got gold and some legs.
Just got one from Phalangax in ZM (?)...
