will produce Uncommon gems a majority of the time, while prospecting
yields a much higher proportion of Rare gems. There is an additional mechanic to be aware of, however - gem chips.
Gem chips are a new flavour item, yielded from prospecting (in addition to gems). They are used as a reagent in cooking for one dish -
When prospecting ore, a gem chip of a certain colour that appears in your Prospecting window will predict the

via prospecting, which can be quite helpful!
Note that the coloured version of each Gem Chip will only be seen in your prospecting window - the chips in your bags will be generic
As you are able to predict the colours of gems you will prospect next, you can prospect

I am an alchemist and I have not only received the better gems when transmuting fish to gems from the Pile of Gems shown here, but I have also received them from doing the daily Wild Transmutation. I actually received one of these when I did the Wild Transmutation today. Items from Wild Transmutation just appear in your bag so not "contained" in anything you have to open.
With the end of legion here, people are quite often auctioning these for far less than they vendor, I have picked up quite a few for 2-5 gold each, and they vendor for 21 g each, so quick profit from people that use addons to mass list
