Overview
Welcome to Cherry's Wowhead PvP guide for Rated Battlegrounds. This guide introduces players to battlegrounds and thoroughly provides details about strategies commonly seen on the ladder. It also includes general advice about how to approach Rated Battlegrounds, how to decide on group composition, how to lead a group, different roles and responsibilities, and more. Before navigating through the entirety of the Shadowlands Rated Battleground guide, please take some time to read through the introduction portion below. Starting PvP may be quite intimidating for some people, but it is important to remember that even the best players all had to start somewhere in order to get where the are today.
This guide is meant to be primarily utilized by
newer players
in the Rated Battleground scene or those looking to get started. Some of the information provided in this guide may not be present in higher rated groups or they may be presented in a more advanced form. As players climb higher on the ladder and absorb more information, they will realize that everyone is responsible for each role and call outs are not tied to a specific individual.
Introduction to Rated Battlegrounds in World of Warcraft
I always stress the idea of communication and team synergy in PvP.
"You are as strong as your weakest link."
Remember this phrase. This is not the same as PvE in which players fight a Raid Boss or a Mythic+ Dungeon boss and expect everything to happen in a given order with limited confounding variables. PvP is scenario-based, and players must quickly adapt to sudden changes. PvP is fast paced and places a strong emphasis on individual responsibility, both mechanically and knowledge-wise. This is typically obtained by a thorough understanding of a player's class and specialization. In addition, the play needs to also know about the abilities of other classes, how their class can interact with and counter such abilities, how to play objectively, and so much more.
Practice. Practice. Practice.
Just like with anything, from gaming to real life scenarios, practice is what will help players strive in the PvP aspect of WoW. Players must learn their strengths and weaknesses. Players must be able to analyze mistakes and grow from them. This can be accomplished by recording queue session, looking up written guides, watching streamers and videos, and so much more. Battlegrounds, Arena Skirmishes, and Wargames are content that can help players get started with PvP without the pressure and intensity of ranked games. Get a group of people together, join Discord, and start practicing! There is going to be several losses along the way and this is going to cause frustration. The best thing to do is keep an open mind, learn from mistakes, and always strive to improve.
Remember to take breaks, get off of the computer, and take time to relax in between queue sessions. Some days players may grind out 100+ CR during a queue session. Some days players may barely be above the CR they started the day at after hours of queueing. Some days players may even lose 200+ CR and feel like they are the worst player. I have been there, several times. There have been queue sessions where I have cried out of frustration or anger at myself because I felt like I was holding my team back. This is normal, human emotion and I am here to tell you to not give up on yourself.
Players have played HUNDREDS upon THOUSANDS of games to become as good as they are today.
You must persevere, take a step back and analyze your gameplay, ask for help, and continue the grind.
Thick skin. Players cannot be easily offended by their peers’ constructive criticism. There are people in this game that may have more experience but their attitude may not be the friendliest. Do not take the criticism too harshly; learn from it. Everyone projects their feelings differently - some more aggressively than others, especially in the heat of the moment. There will be several disagreements in PvP due to different perspectives and different scenarios that not every player may be aware of during intense games. Take the time to hear someone out thoroughly before responding. Think before speaking or acting. However, if someone is truly being excessively toxic (e.g. personal insults, slurs, discrimination), my advice would be to cut ties with them immediately.
No amount of CR is worth jeopardizing friendships or causing someone else distress in real life. You never know what someone may be going through.
Communication is crucial in PvP. In order to be successful in PvP, players must coordinate with the other members in their group. To be able to land a kill does not necessarily mean everyone targets the same person and pops all their cooldowns immediately. PvP requires coordination and setup to lead to kills. This is accomplished through the use of crowd control (CC) abilities (e.g. Cyclone, Mind Control, Fear, Freezing Trap, etc). Everyone should be willing to talk throughout games or at the very minimum, listen to callouts. I understand that some players may be a bit to shy to talk. I have been there. There will be times where the call gets frantic because numerous people are talking at once. This is normal but players should ensure that the leader’s voice is authoritative and clear so the group is able to follow through if there is a sudden change in the strategy. Players must also respect the voice of their Target Caller (TC) because being on the same target as everyone else can help secure a kill more effectively.

Left out the most important tip: If you dont start your own groups, or find a pvp guild, you have very little chance of actually progressing in RBGs from how people now think any achieve older than the most recent means you dont know what you are doing.
