Dragonspawn and Dragonkin are semi-humanoid-like creatures who traditionally serve the Dragonflights. However, not all of these Dragonkin are happy with their place in Dragon society. In one special 10.1 questline, Alexstrasza, the Dragon Queen herself, comes to terms with a rebellion that has been resisting her rule.
Notable Characters
Alexstrasza the Life-Binder
Aspect of the Red Dragonflight and Queen of the Dragons, Alexstrasza the Life-Binder has been the leader and guide of all the Dragonflights for Ten Thousand Years. It was she who commanded the return to the Dragon Isles, and her hope is that she and her fellow Aspects will be able to regain their Aspect Powers. As the Guardian of Life, Alexstrazsa cares deeply about the lives of all on Azeroth - even when it's meant opposing her own kin, as in the Nexus Wars.
Despite her impressive history, Alexstrasza has recently begun to show doubts, expressing regrets over past decisions such as the treatment of the Primalist Incarnates.
Though she is at first seemingly oblivious to the rebel dragonkin's grievances - Alexstrasza takes the rebellion seriously, and by the end of the questline has worked to understand their point of view.
Maldra Flametongue
A former rebel, Maldra Flametongue is a dragonspawn who joined the rebellion for legitimate reasons. She chose to leave after witnessing tactics she could not condone when the rebels at Misty Vale decided to work with the Primalists.
The childhood friend of Investigator Erima, Maldra redeemed herself by helping the investigator shut down her former rebel camp at Misty Vale. However, despite condemning some of their methods, she has maintained that many of the rebellion's grievances are valid.
Even by the end of the questline, Maldra remains suspicious of Alexstrasza's promises and declines an invitation to once again serve alongside the dragons - stating she may reconsider once she sees evidence of real change in dragon society.
Instigator Belaphon
A leader of the rebellion, Instigator Belaphon is the author of The Dragonkin Voice - a series of propaganda pamphlets highlighting the rebellion's grievances with the Dragon Aspects, and calling those discontented dragonkin to action.
Intelligent and sincere in his cause, Belaphon is a persuasive writer, and his words resonate with a great many dragonkin.
By the end of the questline, Belaphon accepts Alexzstrasza's offer to rejoin the Dragonflights, dedicating his pen to their cause - in exchange for a pardon for his part in the rebellion, and a promise that Dragon society will be changed to better address the rebellion's grievances.

Dragon society is made up of more than the Dragons themselves - Dragonspawn and Dragonkin are semi-humanoid-like creatures who traditionally serve the Dragonflights. When the Dragonflights returned to the Dragon Isles, many of these Dragonkin welcomed them back with open arms, ready to resume their duties after ten thousand years.
However, not all were so keen, with some rebelling outright against the Dragon Aspects' rule. Even some Dragonkin who haven't joined the rebellion are sympathetic to their cause.
In a side questline set in the Misty Vale, we help investigate this rebellion, eventually rescuing Maldra Flametongue - a former rebel who is made a captive once she tries to leave. Though Maldra disagrees with the rebellion's choice to align with the Primalists, she also had reasons for joining the rebellion in the first place - reasons that she maintains were honorable.
Cause Without a Rebel
The following quest summary is taken from
Neryssa's original article
.
The questline starts with Captain Drine, on the top floor of the Seat of the Aspects. You will be sent to the second level of the Seat of the Aspects, with Alexstrasza meeting with a dragonkin named Maldra Flametongue. Players who completed the
Misty Vale
storyline of the
旅居索德拉苏斯
achievement will be familiar with Maldra - She leaves Valdrakken to side with a rebelling Dragonkin force, feeling that the Dragonkin left to tend to the Dragon Isles while the Dragons were absent were being treated like mere servants.
As they're talking, a Valdrakken Investigator arrives with bad news - Explosives are being stockpiled by the Valdrakken Aqueducts.
Maldra Flametongue says: ... so when I saw we were hurting other dragonkin, I knew I was on the wrong side.
Alexstrasza the Life-Binder says: But what drew you to their cause? You do not seem dishonorable.
Maldra Flametongue says: No, it was honor that drew me to the cause. The treatment of dragonkin seemed... dishonorable.
Maldra Flametongue says: We cared for this land for centuries without the dragons, but were reduced to mere servants when you returned.
Maldra Flametongue says: So I joined the rebels because we had been pushed aside, expected to serve as though the dragons had never left.
The Dragonkin Voice
Arriving at the caverns below Valdrakken, we have to fight our way into the aqueducts to stop the rebel forces. While we capture rebel forces and slay agitators, we find pieces of Rebel Propaganda - The Dragonkin Voice, a series of pages highlighting many of the rebel's grievances. Of note is a mention of Sendrax, a drakonid guard that showed during the Waking Shores leveling storyline, sacrificing herself to safeguard an uncorrupted dragon egg from the primalists attacking Scalecracker Keep.
龙裔之声1:龙裔的价值
: "The dragons believE they're worth more than us. That's why Sendrax had to sacrifice herself, foR a dragon egg that might not even be viable. They say she's a herO, but she's really their victim. Instigator Belaphon"
龙裔之声2:万年遗弃
: "FoR 100 Years, theY left us alone, while we tended to "their" isles, guarded "their" cities and roads, and kept the peace. TheY haVe repeated that abandonment 99 more times. Should we welcome them with open arms, and obey as before? -Instigator Belaphon"
龙裔之声3:万年独立
: "The dragons returned expecting us to Be what we were, but in tHose 100 Centuries, we changed. We grew. We serve them no longer, and are serFs no longer. We've chosen our Path for 10,000 years, and we will do so again. -Instigator Belaphon"
龙裔之声4:力量与权利
: "The dragons have ruled us because theY're stronger than we. But together, in our great numbers, we're stronger than they. If might makes right, then we are right, if we haVe courage to riSe up together. -Instigator Belaphon"
龙裔之声5:叛军之规
: "And so we Swear one and all to the rebel code. No ruler but one's selF. No purpose but independence. No flight but the flightless. -Instigator Belphon"
The Rebellion's Cause
We're then sent to Steelcliff Rampart, the encampment dedicated to the guards of Valdrakken, where the rebel prisoners we previously captured are being kept. Alexstrasza asks us to speak with the prisoners to figure out why they decided to rebel against the Aspects. They bring a myriad of valid reasons, from not wanting to serve the dragons dying in wars to simply wanting to pursue their own dreams.
Alexstrasza will then convene with you, asking for your insight on what to do with the rebels. There are dialogue choices from giving in to the rebel's demands, crushing their rebellion with force and everything in between, but there are seemingly no right or wrong picks.
Rebel Drakonid: We didn't ask to serve the dragons. We didn't choose to serve the dragons. We were simply commanded to. Against our will.
Alexstrasza the Life-Binder says: We wanted willing allies, not forced servitude. It seems we took their allegiance for granted.
---
Rebel Drakonid says: Every time there's a war, the dragons send us off to die in huge numbers. They want us to fight for them, but what do we get from this?
Alexstrasza the Life-Binder says: So many dragons have died to protect Azeroth over the centuries. I had viewed it as us fighting together, not just sending our troops to war.
---
Rebel Drakonid says: Valdrakken was our home, and the dragons pushed us out when they returned.
Alexstrasza the Life-Binder says: We always thought of Valdrakken as our home. We must remember it is home to the dragonkin as well.
---
Rebel Drakonid says: I have my own dreams beyond fighting wars for dragons.
Alexstrasza the Life-Binder says: I had not considered this. I do not wish to prevent them from pursuing their own dreams.
---
Rebel Drakonid says: I don't see any reason we need the dragons! They left this land to us for 10,000 years. And everything was fine.
Alexstrasza the Life-Binder says: That hadn't occurred to me. But surely they must see we need to work together to protect the Isles.
Alexstrasza the Life-Binder says: Come with me back to Captain Drine, at the entrance to the Rampart. I'd like to discuss what the rebels are saying.
A New Era
Meanwhile, Maldra has managed to solve the cypher contained in the previously gathered rebel propaganda, pointing out to the camp where Instigator Belaphon. Alexstrasza sends us there to communicate to the rebels that they will be treated as equals, wanting us to solve this in the most peaceful way possible.
We eventually subdue Belaphon, bringing them to Valdrakken, where Belaphon, Maldra and Alexstrasza discuss terms of reconciliation. Belaphon accepts them, but Maldra will require some time to turn around. The questline then completes, with you receiving the title!
Alexstrasza the Life-Binder says: Belaphon, this rebellion has gone long enough. As has our poor treatment of the dragonkin.
Alexstrasza the Life-Binder says: I've asked <name> to bring you to the Seat of the Aspects so we can discuss the rights and respect that are fair to dragonkin.
Instigator Belaphon says: I'm glad you've come to see reason! We've fought long and hard for...
Alexstrasza the Life-Binder says: Belaphon! This decision comes in spite of your violence, not because of it.
Alexstrasza the Life-Binder says: Dragonkin - including many of your rebels - are now dead because of this rebellion. Many of them were innocent, and none needed to die.
Alexstrasza the Life-Binder says: But, in talking with our rebel prisoners, I've come to see our treatment of dragonkin has been, at times, disrespectful, inconsiderate, and unfair.
Alexstrasza the Life-Binder says: We dragons must hold ourselves to a higher standard, and it shall begin with treating dragonkin fairly and as equals.
Instigator Belaphon says: That is what I fought for.
Alexstrasza the Life-Binder says: You, however, must still pay for your crimes.
Instigator Belaphon says: My actions were to make the plight of dragonkin known!
Alexstrasza the Life-Binder says: And how many of your own kin were sacrificed so you could make that plight known?
Alexstrasza the Life-Binder says: However, it's my understanding that you have a way with words, and with quills.
Instigator Belaphon says: Yes, that is indeed true.
Alexstrasza the Life-Binder says: From this day forward, we will invite the dragonkin to join us in our work, not demand or require it. With respect as part of the flights, not mere servants of them.
Alexstrasza the Life-Binder says: If you would willingly put your words and your quills to work explaining these new realities, and this grand invitation to defend Azeroth together...
Instigator Belaphon says: Yes, I would do this for my people.
Alexstrasza the Life-Binder says: Then I will defer your sentence while you do this work.
Instigator Belaphon says: As long as the dragons honor this pact, so will I.
Alexstrasza the Life-Binder says: Maldra, your assistance has been invaluable throughout this struggle.
Alexstrasza the Life-Binder says: Would you be willing to take up this invitation? To serve alongside the dragons to protect these isles and Azeroth?
Maldra Flametongue says: My queen, I am honored by your request, considering my past aiding the rebellion.
Maldra Flametongue says: I will consider your request, but for now I must decline. It will take time to see if the dragons will truly abide this equal relationship.
Maldra Flametongue says: If I see dragonkin treated fairly throughout the isles over time, perhaps I will return to offer my aid.
Maldra Flametongue says: It's much harder to change actions than to make proclamations.
Alexstrasza the Life-Binder says: I see. I'm sorry to hear that, but you are completely free to make that choice.
Alexstrasza the Life-Binder says: Your help will always be welcome, should you change your mind.
