Gelbin's Famous Inventions
Gelbin Mekkatorque's helpful gadgets have been used all across Azeroth. These gadgets include, but are not limited to : the Gyromatic Micro-Adjuster, Mechanostriders, Dwarven Seige Engines, and the subterranean railway system linking Stormwind and Ironforge called the Deeprun Tram.
Mechanostriders
Because the gnomes needed a way to keep up with the Dwarven rams and the Alliance's horses, Gelbin Mekkatorque created the mechanical tallstrider mounts known as Mechanostriders. Mekkatorque's first protoype of the Mechanostrider still exists and can be found kept safely in a trophy case in Sector 17 of Gnomeregan.

The Second War
when King Magni Bronzebeard wanted a way to quickly deliver aid from his city of Ironforge to the war-torn kingdom of Stormwind. Magni knew that Gelbin Mekkatorque, the master of tinkering and engineering, would be the perfect gnome for the job. Mekkatorque started working on plans right away, thus the creation of the

Gelbin Mekkatorque and Sicco Thermaplugg
Gelbin Mekkatorque and Sicco Thermaplugg were both being considered during the decision of who would be the High Tinker, but because of Mekkatorque's invention of the Mechanostrider, he was given the title of High Tinker of the gnomes. Sicco Thermaplugg had dreamed of becoming the High Tinker, so he was enraged and envious at his colleague. Sicco spent years beside Mekkatorque as his personal adviser helping him create gadgets and tinkers, but also secretly plotting ways to overthrow Gelbin to secure the position of High Tinker for himself.
Gelbin Mekkatorque and Sicco Thermaplugg.
Trouble in Gnomeregan
Sometime during the Third War, troggs surfaced from the depths of Azeroth and wreaked havoc on the lower portion of the city, destroying Gnomergen's defenses and terrorizing the citizens. Gelbin Mekkatorque, usually full of ideas, was at a loss when it came down to putting an end to the unwelcome attackers. Gelbin's long-time, trusted friend and chief Advisor Sicco Thermaplugg came up with the brilliant idea of using radiation throughout the lower portion of the city to flush out the troggs as they surfaced. Mekkatorque, trusting his chief advisor, followed through with the plan and gave the order to release the toxic radiation into the lower portion of the city where the troggs took up residence while the gnomes locked themselves away in the upper portion.
Thermaplugg's plan worked just as Mekkatorque imaged; it eradicated the troggs from the lower portion of Gnomeregan. Little did Mekkatorque or the rest of the Gnomes know, Thermaplugg's intentions were far from pure and that his plan worked in more ways than one. Toxic radiation started creeping through the vents and into the homes of hundreds of gnomes, wiping out 80% of the population and turning survivors into mutated, frenzied leper gnomes as well as causing the remaining troggs to grow even stronger.
Evacuation was then issued for the healthy survivors and they took refuge with the dwarves. Mekkatorque was confused how this plan of eradicating the troggs could have turned so deadly. How could this have happened? His trusted friend Sicco Thermaplugg had sworn to him that he'd tested the radiation levels and had shown Mekkatorque himself the proof. Thermaplugg had disappeared and was nowhere to be found, which made it impossible for Gelbin to confront him about the mass genocide that had taken place in the city.
Sicco Thermaplugg only expected 30% of the gnome population to be destroyed. His plan was to blame the deaths on Gelbin Mekkatorque (because he was the gnome who allowed the plan to go through), go into the city, kill the Trogg's himself, and then be deemed the High Tinker. This plan did not work, however, and caused the remaining gnomes to stick even closer to Mekkatorque which drove Sicco even more mad. Gelbin later found out that his once trusted advisor Sicco Thermaplugg, the gnome who convinced him to use the toxic radiation for the good of Gnomeregan, had taken control of the trogg-infested city and claimed himself the high overlord of Gnomeregan. If Sicco couldn't be the High Tinker or the King of the Gnomes, no gnome could.
After finding out that Thermaplugg rules over the radioactive halls of Gnomeregan, heroes venture into the dungeon
诺莫瑞根
to put a stop to him once and for all- or so they thought.
The immense loss of life at Gnomeregan weighed heavy on Mekkatorque's shoulders, and in his fury he ordered the death of Thermaplugg. A band of heroes took up the mission and returned with a tale of victory, but after analyzing the claim, Mekkatorque realized that the mechanized overlord defeated in the depths of the city was likely nothing more than a cleverly engineered facsimile of Thermaplugg.
Excerpt of the patch notes from the pre-Cataclysm event showing that the Thermaplugg killed in the dungeon was a fake.
Operation : Gnomeregan
In the Blizzard patch notes for the pre-Cataclysm event, we learn that the Thermaplugg that was killed in the dungeon
诺莫瑞根
was just a decoy. With this information, Gelbin Mekkatorque led the recapturing of Gnomeregan in the pre-Cataclysm event, Operation: Gnomeregan, where heroes charged into the city to put an end to Sicco Thermaplugg.. for real this time.
The Alliance heroes who participated in the pre-cataclysm event gained the Feat of Strength

and the toy

Above is a video showing gameplay of the pre-cataclysm event that can not be completed anymore.
The Death of Sicco Thermaplugg
After reclaiming the outer perimeter and upper levels of Gnomeregan, Gelbin Mekkatorque pushed forward to his private chambers in Sector 17 which had strangely been cleared out of radiation. Gelbin, feeling overwhelmed by the events that had happened to his people, broke down. Gelbin never had a moment to himself where he could reflect on the trauma he had dealt with, but after finally being able to cry and let it all out, he decided it was time to get vengeance for his once thriving home of Gnomeregan and the innocent gnome lives lost. As Gelbin continued to look through his chambers, he was surrounded by three of Sicco's troggs. Prior to entering his chambers, Gelbin had told his guards to stay back so he could grieve. He had to come up with a plan of defense fast. He used wires, gears, and anything else he could find to defeat the troggs while Sicco taunted Gelbin through the over-com. Thermaplugg, after seeing his Trogg's defeated, decided to take it upon himself to kill his rival, but was then cut short when Gelbin's carefully placed spring trap cut Sicco's mechanical suit in half, severing his legs from the rest of his body. After observing that Thermaplugg's mechanical suit could cauterize Sicco's wounds, causing him to survive the cut, Gelbin decided to leave his old friend to be killed by the troggs or rats.
In the Blizzard story below, which the full story can be found
here
, we learn that Gelbin Mekkatorque had defeated his once trusted friend Sicco Thermaplugg once and for all.
He turned and tapped the wrench against the catch holding the spring in place—a catch that had been supported by the framework below. Now it swung down with a clank, releasing the spring to whip free of the axle, a sharp steel blur whistling through the room as a massive store of pent-up energy was discharged in seconds. Gelbin felt a tremendous whoosh of motion slashing over his head, and then... stillness.
He pivoted and looked back. The troggs still stood there, drooling. Sicco let out another giggle.
Three lonely hairs that had been previously growing on the crown of Gelbin's head slowly fell down in front of his eyes.
Followed by the head of every trogg in the room.
And finally, by the bisected torso of Sicco Thermaplugg's battle suit. With a hot gush of steam, the top half slid free and crashed to the ground just in front of Gelbin, rolling to a stop face up against his leg. The occupant swallowed once and blinked repeatedly.
Sicco was surprised.
Sicco was... confused.
"M-my legs are in that half," Sicco said, pointing at the still-standing portion of the suit.
High Tinker Gelbin Mekkatorque nodded and leaned down to pat him on his mechanized shoulder.
"Indeed they are, my friend. And with a razor-quick spring cut and steam cauterization from your ruptured engine, the bleeding is probably minimal. I'd wait around to see if the rats find you before your trogg minions do, but I've seen enough of the latter for one day."
"You're just... just going to leave me here?"
"You don't deserve a quick death, Sicco. You deserve a long, miserable existence in a dark hole, surrounded by filthy monsters."
The Aftermath
After realizing that the gnomes have all of the Alliance on their side as well as so many friends helping them reconstruct Gnomeregan, Gelbin is able to get out of his depressive state and have full confidence in the fact that the gnomes will make it through the hardships and Gnomeregan will one day thrive again. The S.A.F.E (Survivor Assistance Facilitation Expedition) team rescued the remaining gnomes and came up with a cure to cleanse the survivors of radiation. During the starting questline for gnomes, the player is taken through the decontamination process during the quest
净化处理
.
You've been down here in Gnomeregan for a long time, <name> and it's amazed that you've survived and kept your wits so long! We need to get you out.
Before we can send you to the surface to join the rest of the gnomes, you have to go through the decontamination process. Just head into the next room and board the Sanitron 500. It will do the rest! It shouldn't even hurt... much.
When you're all done, check in with Technician Braggle and he'll make sure you get some suitable gear.

Mists of Pandaria
During the Mists of Pandaria raid

, Mekkatorque assists the Alliance by using gnomish technology that turned Kor'kron soldiers into critters so that the Alliance could venture deeper into the Underhold.
High Tinker Mekkatorque yells: Deploy the gear! Establish a perimeter!
Gnome Spider Tank yells: Yeehaw!!!
Gnomeregan Operative yells: Let's see what sort of toys the Kor'kron have been building.
Gnomeregan Operative yells: What am I thinking?! I haven't trained on this piece of equipment! AAAAH!
Gnomeregan Operative yells: Wow! Now that is an incredible piece of shiny!
High Tinker Mekkatorque yells: Oh, hello friends! We've just about secured the surface, it looks like the real fight's going to be down here.
High Tinker Mekkatorque yells: Don't worry, we've got your back! Forge ahead, brave heroes!
Mekkatorque can also be found at the end of the Garrosh Hellscream encounter.
High Tinker Mekkatorque: "Victory for the Alliance! Before we clear out of here, my people will grab as much of this crazy technology as we can get our hands on."
Legion
格尔宾·梅卡托克
can be found within the battle for Broken Shore cinematic. His invention the Skyfire was used to help defend Azeroth from the Legion. Gelbin and his fellow Tinkerers accompanied King Wrynn and other Alliance forces on the assault of the Broken Shore. King Wrynn calls for
格尔宾·梅卡托克
to bring in the Alliance gunship called the Skyfire as backup and is later used as a way to retreat. During the battle, the Horde retreats and leaves the Alliance vulnerable, forcing them to retreat as well. The Alliance attempts to evacuate the Broken Shore on the Skyfire, but a fel reaver is summoned from the fel-infested depths by Gul'dan in an attempt to knock the gunship out of the sky. King Varian Wrynn then sacrifices his life and slays the fel reaver so the Alliance can retreat to safety.
Battle for Broken Shore scenario

Battle for Azeroth
Battle of Lordaeron
Mekkatorque and his forces joined the Battle for Lordaeron with the help of Alleria Windrunner, who created a Void portal to transport both his gnomish troops and her own void elves.
Alleria Windrunner says: Let us even the odds, King Wrynn!
Anduin Wrynn says: Alleria! Thank the Light you've made it!
Alleria Windrunner says: I am known for my timing, your majesty. Mekkatorque, are you ready for battle?
High Tinker Mekkatorque says: Indubitably! I brought some extra machines for backup. Feel free to give 'em a spin!
Anduin Wrynn says: Jaina, Genn, help me with Blightcaller and Lor'themar.
Anduin Wrynn says: Alleria, take the rest of our troops and focus on routing the enemy army.
Alleria Windrunner says: As you wish. Champions, with me!
High Tinker Mekkatorque says: My machines are at your command!
Lady Jaina Proudmoore says: The Horde is falling back again? What is their strategy, here?
Genn Greymane says: That accursed blight blocks our path. Our forces can't follow her.
Anduin Wrynn says: We can't let the warchief escape. Capturing her is the only way to win this war.
Alleria Windrunner says: Understood. We will not let you go alone.
Anduin Wrynn says: Mekkatorque, can your flying machines get us past this blight?
High Tinker Mekkatorque says: I don't have many of them, but the ones I do are at your disposal.
Gelbin Mekkatorque in Patch 8.1
Gelbin Mekkatorque's involvement with Patch 8.1, Tides of Vengeance, is unknown. However, he is shown on the dungeon journal on the 8.1 PTR in the Siege of Zuldazar raid.
Gelbin vs King Gallywix
Mekkatorque and Gallywix can be found trash talking each other in a showdown as they fly around on Azerite-powered engineering contraptions. The full dialogue can be found in the
broadcast text datamined in Tides of Vengeance news post
.
Gallywix believes goblin technology to be superior to gnomish engineering:
"We're gonna show the Alliance what goblin technology can do.
And by that, I mean we're gonna blow up a whole lotta them."
Hah! There we go. You better hang on, cause this thing is gonna JET. It's fueled by Azerite, baby!
Uh oh, hold on I think it's going too faaaaaaaaaast!
Okay, hold on, I just gotta figure out which button makes this thing go flying...
Whew! This baby can really fly. Imagine what it'll do to the Alliance!
And if anything goes wrong, this baby has roadside assistance that'll come to fix it. I got a guarantee and everything.
Huh, feels weird actually doin' somethin' for someone else. Is this what you do all the time?
Gotta say, I'm not a fan. But you know who I'm really NOT a fan of?
Mekkatorque! King of the gnomes, or whatever those little freaks like to call him.
With a little help, this shoddy goblin workmanship, may just explode!
He thinks he's soooooo much better than goblins! Yeah, well, you know what pal, at least half of us ain't RADIOACTIVE!
We need to reach the engine room.
You know what I'm gonna do when I find this guy? First, I'm gonna blow up that little mech suit of his.
Then, I'm gonna find MORE of his little machines and blow them up too!
Seriously, this guy is really obsessed with machines. Makes me think he wants to be part robot or somethin'!
Anyway, where was I? Oh yeah, blowing up all his stuff. Yeah, I bet he'd be cryin' and sobbin' the entire time, what a wimp!
And then, I'm gonna sell all those junk parts of his at BELOW MARKET RATE. The ultimate goblin insult!
Wow, Gallywix, that would really show me! Any more clever ideas?
GAH! $p, hit the big red button, BLOW THIS MOOK TO SMITHERINGS!
Mekkatorque insults goblin technology--it's always falling apart.
We're cookin' with gas now, AZERITE gas! Hit the big red button and let's see what this thing can really do.
*BZZT* This is sad Gallywix, my creations are way stronger than yours!
*BZZT* Who are you kidding, Gallywix? Your machine is falling apart!
*BZZT* You goblins can never beat gnomish technology!
*BZZT* Haha, this is just pitiful Gallywix, you're no match for my creations.
*BZZT* I just ran a scan, are you seriously using an OS THAT old?!
*BZZT* Really, did you guys iterate on this mech at all? It's barely first pass!
*BZZT* That mech of yours is a serious safety hazard!
HAHAHA! Take a good look at what gold and goblins can getcha, Mekkatorque. This baby is brimmin' with Azerite!
(Hey uh, $p, you might wanna hold on to a lot of somethings for this one)
You piece of junk! I paid good money for this, and all you can do is make me look like an idiot in front of Mekkatorque's toys!
Just... freakin'... WORK!
Now that's what I'm talkin' about, look at all that Azerite! All that destruction... all that POWER!
Now THIS is what I paid for! Mekkatorque's got nothin' on this.
Let's get back to the base, see if we can find where Mekkatorque is controlling these things.
Battle of Dazar'alor
Gelbin Mekkatorque is a boss in the upcoming Battle of Dazar'alor raid. You can check out his abilities in our
strategy guide
.
Alliance players will temporarily transform into Horde counterparts when fighting this boss.
Some loot is themed after his love for engineering:
双管爆裂手炮
: Your attacks have a chance to fire a Buster Shot dealing 3552 Nature damage.
大工匠的披风
: Increases your Kul Tiran or Zandalari Engineering by 5.
机甲驾驶员之握
: You move 20% faster while piloting a mount created by an Engineer. This does not stack with other movement speed increasing effects.
Mekkatorque now sports a new model:
According to the
broadcast text datamined in Tides of Vengeance
, Gelbin Mekkatorque does not die, but is instead frozen. Anduin and Jaina express concern about not being able to bring Gelbin back to life.
Jaina... was there nothing you could do for the High Tinker?
No, I'm sorry. The mechanism used to freeze his body is unlike any of the magic I know.
Anduin, is there nothing the Light can do?
No. We tried. *sigh* We did have a victory despite the costs. I should celebrate with the others and yet...
I think I understand.
But what about you? How are you fairing? You held off some of their best warriors while the fleet retreated.
Better. My healing is ongoing. Don't worry about me, Anduin. I'll be okay.
It is good to have you back with us, Auntie.
Thank you. Anduin... I have heard rumors. About an old friend of mine. Calia.
That... I'm not certain I can explain it, but I'll tell you what I know.
Let's go inside and you can tell me.
Visions of N'Zoth
WARNING: STORY SPOILERS! Do not continue on if you don't want to be spoiled!
Thankfully, players are able to help saving Gelbin during the 8.3 Mechagnome Allied Race questline.
As it turns out, his frozen pod is slowly powering down, and we need to help Kelsey Steelspark to get him out of there. For that, she needs the help of the mechagnomes of Mechagon. Prince Erazmin is happy to help, and marvels at the undeviating motivation of the gnomes to safe their leader.
Thanks to the genius of the best mechagnome engineers, Gelbin receives a new heart and lives again. After a short discussion about the future of the mechagnomes, Prince Erazmin asks Mekkatorque to lead his people together with the gnomes, making them a part of the Allience as one of the allied races:
Gelbin Mekkatorque: I can hardly believe my eyes... the fabled city of Mechagon! Most impressive, Prince Erazmin!
Prince Erazmin: Thank you. Sadly, for too long this city has symbolized thd schism my father created between my people and the rest of gnomanity.
Prince Erazmin: For all our upgrades, we mechagnomes now realize that we are still gnomes at heart. If you will have us, it is our wish to reunite with Gnomeregan.
Prince Erazmin: And I would be honored if you, High Tinker, would lead us.
Gelbin Mekkatorque: Prince Erazmin... It is I who am honored. I will accept your request, with one condition.
Gelbin Mekkatorque: You must promise to stand beside me, as my counselor... and my friend.
Prince Erazmin: Absolutely, High Tinker.
Gelbin Mekkatorque: Come, let us address our people... together.
---
Kelsey Steelspark: Gnomes and mechagnomes. Today is a joyous occasion many centuries in the making! The reunification of Gnomeregan and Mechagon!
Kelsey Steelspark: Just as the citizens of Mechagon thrive from the union of flesh and steel, so too will our union bring us success and prosperity!
Kelsey Steelspark: At the behest of Prince Erazmin, it is my privilege to announce the ruler of an undivided gnomekind--Gelbin Mekkatorque, King of the Gnomes!
