Early Life
Anduin Llane Wrynn, son of Varian and Tiffin Ellerian Wrynn, rules the kingdom of Stormwind and acts as High King for the Alliance. However, his leadership was built over many different events in the past. He was forced to grow up at a very young age as the manipulations from the black dragon Onyxia caused the death of his mother and led to psychological trauma for his father.
The Stonemasons guild lead by Edwin VanCleef had worked very hard on rebuilding Stormwind after the Horde destroyed it in the Second War, but the payment promised was never delivered. Onyxia, disguised as Lady Katrana Prestor, made sure of that. The situation escalated so VanCleef lead a riot through the streets. This event drew the queen, who loved her people so very much, to the streets. During this riot, the Queen was hit by a fatal rock, and she wasn't able to recover from the blow. Her death caused Anduin’s father to fall into a depression, which Onyxia exploited. The one shining ray of light that pierced the darkness for him was his son. Not even the black dragon was able to get between the love of a father and son. To change that, Lady Prestor came up with a plan and used the Stonemasons once again, now known as the Defias Brotherhood, to kidnap Varian. In his absence Anduin, merely a child, became the ruler of Stormwind with people like Prestor and Bolvar Fordragon advising him.
Onyxia, however, wasn’t satisfied with Varian just absent. Her ultimate goal was to split the king into two separate beings. One strong-willed, which she would kill off and one weak-willed, easily manipulated by her. Using her dark magic, she performed a ritual to achieve this goal and succeeded in splitting him apart. Unfortunately, her plan wasn't utterly successful as the naga attacked at just the wrong moment, and the strong-willed Varian was able to escape. His journey would lead him to become a slave gladiator, earning him the title of Lo’gash while his weaker side was ransomed back to Stormwind and placed firmly under Onyxia’s control.
The dragon's control over Varian was only able to be broken thanks to Anduin, and eventually, Lo’gash returned home, revealing her real identity. Seeing no other option, she kidnapped the prince and took him to her lair. His fathers' personalities disagreed on many things, but the one thing they did agree on was the love for their child. Their party entered Onyxia’s lair to slay the dragon. In their confrontation Onyxia was kind enough to blast the 2 Varian’s with her magic, turning him into one single being and with a mighty swing of his sword, Onyxia was brought low.
Anduin was saved, but the separation of his father had quite an effect on the king. He was out of balance, could strike out with the savagery of Lo’gash at any moment. The other side of him often overruled the nice, political side of him, the savage, stubborn viciousness that kept him alive in the arena often was a threat to what he cared. Thankfully young Anduin had a good head on his shoulders and often gave his father sound advice.
Tides of War Novel
A few years later, there was a meeting at Theramore where Alliance and Horde sat down to try and put the past behind them. Varian was extra reluctant to forge any relationships with the Horde. Horde this that had made Varian lose his father and his kingdom, but his son, again, guided him towards the logical decisions. When Garrosh Hellscream asked why the Orcs should make concessions when they have the strength to take what they wanted, Anduin replied with another question. Why waste your warriors and resources in battle when a few words will bring you greater profit? The meeting was going rather well, and peace seemed to be an option until an attack of the Twilight Hammer lead by Garona Halforcen happened. Garona, part of the original Horde, was the one who had murdered Varian’s father Llane Wrynn, leading Varian to quickly toss accusations against the Horde, which led to no agreement to be reached.
Cataclysm
A few years later, we find Anduin in Ironforge, in a diplomatic and training visit to the Dwarven capital. His father was a great warrior, but his skills with the blade were not passed down to his son. Valeera Sanguinar saw his potential with a throwing dagger. He could shoot a bow, but not even the dwarves were able to teach him the ways of the warrior-like they had improved the skills of people like Arthas and Varian. Aerin Stonehand, part of King Magni Bronzebeard's Elite Guard, was appointed to help his skills improve, but she could see that this was not his way. However, their meeting leads the two to quickly develop a relationship, with some even considering it a romantic one. Sadly, their relationship was cut short as one day, while hanging out at the Thunderbrew Distillery, earthquakes caused by the Cataclysm, led to the ceiling to fall and take Aerin’s life and almost Anduin's own as well. With the untimely death, it meant that she was unable to teach him his father's ways, but he would find his own path, the path towards the Light.
King Magni was very fond of Anduin and, as a gift, he gave him Fearbreaker, a weapon that had known the taste of blood and, in certain hands, has also been known to stanch blood. When he received the old Bronzebeard heirloom, it glew with The Light, almost like it was flowing through the hammer, a sign that it liked Anduin. The prince would later gift the hammer to Baine Bloodhoof as they accidentally met in a visit to Jaina Proudmoore. The hammer was a gift from the young prince to help Baine fight Magatha Grimtotem and reclaim control of Thunder Bluff. Later on, the Tauren Chieftain decided to return the gift through Jaina, as he didn't feel worthy of wielding it.
Another time Anduin showed the world his diplomatic skills was shortly after the first signs of the Cataclysm. During that time Magni decided to perform an ancient Titan ritual to communicate with the land. Rather than just interacting with it, he became part of the land which led his daughter, Moira Thaurissan, to show up and take over the city. Anduin, still in the town, was made hostage, even being there as a diplomat. Thankfully Moira wasn't aware that Anduin was carrying a hearthstone that his aunty Jaina Proudmoore had given to him. (Jaina is not his real aunt of course, but they were always very close). With the use of the stone, he was able to teleport out and warned others what was going on. Varian wasn't happy with the incident. He mobilized the SI:7 and infiltrated Ironforge during the night, dragging Moira out of bed to the Great Forge. He was ready to execute her, but Anduin that was able to reach him and convince Varian to stop it. He reasoned that what Moira had done was not right, but she was the rightful heir and killing her would just send the dwarves into a civil war and not resolve anything. This led to a political debate that created the Council of Three Hammers, which represented all dwarf clans, each with one member.
Sometime later, Anduin decided to join Prophet Velen and the Draenei for a while to learn more about the Light, something he had a high affinity towards. Hearing his plans made something snap in Varian. He saw his beloved Tiffin again with their infant son snuggled in her arms. Tiffin faded away, leaving only the child, and then the child began to fade away. Varian could not let that happen. Without thinking, he lunched forward, snaring Anduin’s arm. The prince let out a cry. Some of the overwhelming fear faded, and Varian realized that he was crushing Anduin’s arm. He knew as well as his father that Varian not only could strangle a foe with one hand but had several times. Few men there were who could match the strength of the legendary Lo’Gosh. And now, in a fit of utter madness, he had used that same might, however briefly, against his defiant son. Despite his desperate attempts, this act only pushed Anduin further away, and he left his father to join up with Velen.
During his stay with the Draenei, he learned much about the Light. One day, the Prophet received a vision of the prince. Instead of just a prince, an armored warrior stood before him, his plate helm and breastplate shining with the essence of the Light itself. The warrior wielded a sword forged from the same material as the armor, held it aloft as he perched on an outcropping. Whether it was on another world or Azeroth, Velen couldn't quite tell. The Alliance, Horde, Dragons, and Naaru gathered together to fight against unspeakable darkness. It was vast and empty and swallowed all light that entered it. Velen knew it would be all-consuming until, at last, it would turn and devour itself, endlessly gnawing on nothing in the Great Dark Beyond, removing all meaning from the universe, from the most heart-breaking sonata to the most arresting sunset. It was too terrible to see, to comprehend, and yet the army headed straight for it. And the light began to fade.
King Varian would eventually find his balance and father and son would reunite. Things were still a bit awkward at first, but the gap between them was quickly healed when Anduin’s father nearly died to a Twilight Hammer's attack, leading the prince to call to the heavens, to call upon the Light to bring him back. The love between father and son had been powerful enough to stand up against a black dragon and would see them through the greatest darkness.
Mists of Pandaria
As time went on, with Varian regaining his balance, the prince and the king agreed on more things, saw their strengths and weaknesses complement each other. The fear of losing his child was still present, so when the white pawn ran ashore on Pandaria, Varian quickly sent adventurers after him to get him back. But boys grow up, and the prince refused to come home. He had still a lot to learn about this mysterious land of Pandaria, the Sha, and its potential healing powers. His adventures would get him in touch with the August Celestials like Chi-Ji, the Red Crane and Xuen, the white tiger. He was able to convince them to open the gates to sacred Vale of Eternal Blossoms, not just for the Alliance either but the Horde as well. A choice that even confused the Horde emissary, Sunwalker Dezco and he wondered if the Prince had ever met their Warchief.
Dezco would be proven right as Garrosh was on the path of war. He had his troops search far and wide for powerful artifacts in Pandaria, a quest that leads them on the hunt for the Divine Bell. An ancient Mogu artifact which can stir the hearts of your warriors, fuel their hatred and anger and lend them strength on the field of battle. The bell’s screaming voice strikes fear and doubt into the hearts of your enemies, quite a powerful weapon which the Alliance tried desperately to keep out of the hands of the Horde. They located it first and hid it away within Darnassus, but Garrosh used the Sunreavers of the Kirin Tor to steal it. While Jaina had previously refused Anduin’s request of allying the Kirin Tor with the Alliance, this betrayal greatly angered her and pushed her into signing up. In the end, it still left the Divine Bell in the hands of Garrosh though. Anduin took it upon himself to find a solution, locate the harmonic mallet which acted as a counter to the Bell.
Anduin was successful in his search, and he used it to stop Garrosh plan, something that the Warchief didn't appreciate. After Anduin hit the Bell with the Harmonic Mallet, Garrosh struck the Bell which leads it to collapse on top of Anduin, crushing the young Prince. The prince was lucky to survive and was able to recover from his injury. The healing process was started by Prophet Velen, but finished by Pandaren mistweaver monks. The healing had a side-effect, Anduin now felt pain, aches in his bones when he was being cruel, thoughtless, or courting danger. A holy spider sense as some call it. While healing, Anduin spent a lot of time and grew close with Wrathion. This uncorrupted black dragon grew quite fond of the prince of Stormwind, and despite the history with Onyxia, Anduin felt the same, going as far as calling Wrathion a friend. Black dragons are tricky company though, and if you stand in their way, they’re not afraid to stab you in the back or, in the case of Wrathion, hit you over the head.
The aftermath of the events of Mists of Pandaria and Siege of Orgrimmar led to the trial of Garrosh Hellscream when Anduin played a significant role. Instead of killing him on the spot, Garrosh was imprisoned and placed on trial in Pandaria, with the August Celestials as judges. While the case was being presented, Garrosh made the odd request of talking with Anduin. This request was an important one, as Garrosh had been silent so far in the judgment. However, it was not a natural choice for the Prince to make, considering their past, but someone in trouble has asked to speak with him, how could he say no and still stand in the Light? They discussed various topics like if there was such a thing as destiny, what they were willing to do for their people, and how Tiffin should have miscarried. Not the most pleasant prisoner to talk too, yet when Anduin learned about the plot to poison and murder him, during the trial, he still intervened. This intervention allowed Garrosh to bet set free by the bronze dragon Kairozdormu and taken to an alternate reality to kick off the Warlords of Draenor expansion.
Garrosh's escape did not come without a fight. Alternate versions of our heroes teleported in, and even the Infinite Dragonflight showed up for battle. During the fight, his motherly figure, Jaina was shot down, losing her life despite others trying to do everything in their power to heal her. All hope seemed lost for the mage, Varian told Anduin that there was nothing they could to save her, but the prince wouldn't give up on her. That’s when the red crane knew his student had not forgotten the lessons of his temple. Hope is what you have when all other things have failed you. Where there is hope, you make room for healing, for everything that's possible and even impossible. His powers made her open her eyes once more, the second person that Anduin brought back from the dead.
Legion
Sadly his father would not receive that blessing for a second time. With Legion, a massive gateway was opened at the Tomb of Sargeras and Varian, together with Sylvanas, lead the charge while the rest of our forces moved quickly to catch up. The might of the demons was too much to handle. The Horde could not hold its ground and was forced to call the retreat. The retreat left the Alliance to fend for themselves, and Varian was forced to sacrifice himself to buy enough time for the rest of them to escape.
Gul'dan obliterated his body and Shalamayne, the king's sword, was left in the ground. Months later we find Varian’s compass in the waters of the Broken Shore, during the second offensive at the Tomb of Sargeras, and bring it back, together with Shalamayne, to now King Anduin Wrynn. During all this time, Anduin has been leading his people back from Stormwind, not venturing into the Broken Isles. Velen believes that the Light is strong with him and he will grow into his crown, but Genn thinks they need more than that, and so does Anduin. He hasn’t seen the sacrifice his soldiers made - that they continue to make. A King must know the weight of the orders given – the price of them. If a compass breaks his spirit, how will he respond when the war arrives on our doorstep? Anduin believes that they’re right, they’re absolutely right. The time has come for him to leave the safety of the Keep and travel to the Broken Shore himself, to see the place where his father died.
Picking up Shalamayne has him see a vision of his father. In the Valley of Heroes, he asks him, "What am I supposed to do now?" Varian replies and Anduin finds the strength within him to fill the void left behind by his father. Anduin wears his crown, holds his title, but he has done nothing to earn them or the faith of his people, but he will give it his all to make it so.
Legion ended with the imprisonment of Sargeras but not without damage to our world as the Lord of the Legion pierced the planet with his blade causing Azerite to pop up all around the globe. This powerful substance will change the balance of power, despite Magni Bronzebeard, now representing Azeroth as her Speaker, trying to convince the factions to work together to heal Azeroth. Azerite's potential escalates the conflict between the Alliance the Horde to the full-on faction war. But before that, there was still an attempt at an impossible peace.
Before the Storm Novel
Shortly before the discovery of Azerite, Anduin’s caretaker Wyll Benton died of old age. In his final moments, he can’t seem to find his beloved wife Elsie waiting for him. If she had died, she would be waiting, and if his wife had survived, she would have found a way back to him. His last request to Anduin is to tell her that he always loved only her. If you see her, tell her I’ll wait for her. As luck would have it, Elsie is the leader of the Desolate Council, an organization that slowly formed once the Dark Lady became the Warchief to help rule Undercity. They are not another Putress, as they have no intention of seizing power from the Dark Lady, just making sure that there’s a governing body to tend to the population’s needs. There are more amongst the Forsaken that would love to see their living family again. Not only that, but we also saw the factions putting aside their hatreds and working together against the threats of the Legion.
The conversations between Anduin and Elsie led to the plan to reunite the Forsaken with their living loved ones. Oddly enough Sylvanas agrees with the idea, leading to Forsaken and Humans to meet out on the field. This meeting with Sylvannas gives Anduin a chance to ask the Dark Lady about that fateful day on the Broken Shore. Did she betray his father? But her reply is empty, as she tells him “Varian Wrynn's destiny was set in stone, Little Lion. The Legion’s numbers would have seen to that whatever choice I made that day.” Anduin believes her, and it’s not unreasonable to suppose that remaining there would have doomed them – and the Alliance.
The meeting goes pretty well. So good in fact that some of the Forsaken no longer want to go home and prefer to follow their families back to their homes. Amongst those keeping an eye on the gathering is a priestess of the Conclave, the priest order hall that united against the Legion and partly inspired Anduin for this plan. Her name is Calia Menethil, sister to Arthas Menethil and despite telling Anduin that she had no plans to overthrow Sylvanas when the Forsaken asked her to stand with them as they abandoned the Banshee Queen, she did just that. Of course, Sylvanas wasn’t pleased, and she had her archers shoot down not only the Forsaken that tried to run but even those that didn't decide to betray her. These traitors lead the Dark Lady to rethink about the Desolate Council. The only Council members she trusts are the ones who returned to her early on, broken and bitter. She could not allow that sentiment, that hope to grow in her people. During the incident, she was clever though and did not shoot any of the living, to not kill any of the Alliance, which could be grounds for retaliation. However, Calia was not one of theirs. She was a citizen of Lordaeron, so the banshee queen herself fired the arrow that took Calia’s life despite Anduin rushing the field and trying to save her. He decides to bring her body back to the Netherlight Temple, leading to the Little Lion and the Warchief to have a stare down ending with neither side being willing to start a war.
A few days later, back at Netherlight temple, the naaru Saa’ra, Alonsus and the order were waiting. Calia would come to Saa’ra when the dreams of what was past were too painful to endure. There were things she had to do before the dreams would cease, things she must understand. People who would need her help. And the Naaru assured her of this seemingly strange truth; that sometimes the most beautiful and essential gifts come wrapped in pain and blood. There will be no more of those battles for her now. Calia Menethil would be freed from the sufferings of the living, from the nightmares that once rent her heart. She understood that those on that field were her people. And she accepted that responsibility by giving her life to try to save them. Not as a human, as they were when she was young, but as Forsaken, as they were in that moment. Light and dark. Forsaken priest and Human priest. Together both brought her back to the Light, and she would have her be. Alonsus and Anduin each took one of Calia’s small, pale hands and a torrent of light starts spilling out. He usually experienced the light’s power flowing through him like a river, but now it seemed like a whole ocean was utilizing him as a vessel. The light limned him in its warm hue, and it chased around the still yet completely intact body of the queen of Lordaeron and whirled about the forsaken archbishop. Anduin felt it swell like a wave, then crest and break, emptying him but not depleting him and the cold hand in his squeezed. Calia was resurrected, her eyes glowing a soft gentle white, not the eerie yellow hue of a forsaken. She was dead, but she lived. She was no mindless undead, but she was not a Forsaken either. She had been raised by a Human and a Forsaken both using the power of the light, bathed in the radiance of a Naaru. The third person Anduin helped to bring back to life. Despite the failure of trying to reunite the Forsaken and the Humans, Anduin vowed never to stop hoping for peace and never stop believing that people can change. But he does realize that he’s been like a farmer expecting to harvest crops from a poisoned field. It’s just not possible. People can change, but not everyone. Those who don't have the desire to change will never do so. Sylvanas Windrunner is one of those. “I believe.” said Anduin Llane Wrynn, ‘that Sylvanas Windrunner is well and truly lost.”
Sylvanas lead the Horde in their campaign through Darkshore which ended with the Burning of Teldrassil. They had been working very hard at trying to evacuate as many of the citizens as they could, prepared for an occupation but none of them had expected the genocide of the Night Elves. Their response came with the Siege of Lordaeron yet once again Sylvanas proved to be ruthless with her tactics. Azerite has been weaponized, and she unleashed the blight upon both the enemy and her own soldiers and then proceeded to resurrect them. Thankfully Jaina showed up just in time to save the day so that the Siege could continue. The Siege lead to the imprisonment of Varok Saurfang, a veteran Horde Hero and a brief confront with Sylvanas herself in the throne room before she purged the Ruins of Lordaeron with blight.
Battle for Azeroth
These events kick off the Battle for Azeroth where both sides go at each other. The Alliance goes out to recruit new allies in to form of the Kul Tirans, but the history between them makes that rather difficult. All the same, heroes prove their worth, and Kul Tiras officially joins the faction with Jaina appointed as their Lord Admiral. Anduin also meets with Taelia Fordragon, daughter of Bolvar Fordragon, who had been sent to Kul Tiras when she was but a child after her father's death at the Wrathgate. The King remembers him mentioning her, calling her his shining star and the two of them become friends, Anduin able to tell Taelia stories of her father. It’s uncertain if Anduin knows the fate of Bolvar, him taking up the role of Lich King but it’s not impossible since despite his wish of being forgotten, several characters known about Bolvar including Jaina Proudmoore.
As a tie-in for Tides of Vengeances, the first content patch of Battle for Azeroth, the Lost Honor cinematic continues to tell the story between Varok and Anduin after the Battle for Lordaeron.
We learn that Anduin plans to work together with Varok Saurfang to defeat Sylvanas. However, this plan won’t come to fruition soon, as the Alliance has to fight multiple warfronts at once: First there is
Darkshore, the home of the night elves, which has been taken by the Forsaken
; at the same time, the Battle of Dazar’alor breaks out.
In the end, the night elves retake Darkshore while the remaining forces defeat King Rastakhan in Dazar’alor. What looks like a victory for the Alliance makes Anduin feel like the recent happenings have been steps towards more war, more bloodshed.
In a private conversation with Jaina, Anduin mourns the losses of the attack on Zuldazar and the wounding of Gelbin Mekkatorque. At the end of their talk, Jaina asks Anduin about the whereabouts of Calia Menethil, in hopes she could help her brother Derek Proudmoore, who has been set free by Baine Bloodhoof.
With the Rise of Azshara, Anduin learns about Baine’s fate as a Horde traitor, and together with Thrall and Varok he manages to free Baine. During a secret meeting in Dustwallow Marsh, all attending members led by Anduin and Varok Saurfang agree on uniting and “breaking the cycle” of war between Alliance and Horde. Together with the orcs and his Alliance companions, Anduin marches towards Orgrimmar. In front of its gates, Varok - while wielding Anduin’s Shalamayne and Thrall’s axe - challenges Sylvanas to a Mak’gora which turns into one of the most monumental duels in Warcraft history:
Thanks to Saurfang’s sacrifice and Sylvanas’ derogatory statements, the Horde finally sees its true colors again. During Varok’s memorial, both Thrall and Anduin find words for the old soldier:
Thrall: Varok Saurfang. Son of Koruk. Supreme Commander of the Might of Kalimdor. High Overlord of the Horde.
Thrall: He led the charge against the Lich King. He defended our world from the Legion. Saurfang inspired all of us to strive for true honor. And his legacy will live on in our deeds.
Anduin: When the Alliance and Horde marched on Ahn'Qiraj, it was Saurfang who valiantly commanded our combined forces. Today, his courage saved thousands of lives... on both sides of the battle.
Anduin: His sacrifice will never be forgotten.
Thrall: You have earned your warrior's death, old friend. Now, greet your son... with honor and glory.
With the cooperation between Horde and Alliance to hunt down N’Zoth being the focus of 8.3, Anduin’s story seems to slow down. So far
we only know about a dialogue between him and Jaina, talking about the outcome of the fight against N’Zoth, and the future of Taelia
.

Shadows Rising
With Sylvanas gone, the Horde makes the decision not to elect another Warchief, but to rather form a new Horde Council. N'Zoth is defeated, and the Alliance and Horde sign an armistice. However, Anduin's troubles are far from over. The Night Elves are still reeling from the atrocities Sylvanas has committed against them. Tyrande and Malfurion have fled to Nordrassil, and they have been ignoring Anduin's letters.
As the High King of the Alliance, Anduin regularly goes out on rides to inspect his lands. Mathias Shaw often accompanies him, and during one of these rides, Anduin tells him a story about his father, Varian Wrynn. Anduin once asked him why horses are measured in hands, and Varian didn't know, so he asked the groom if he knew. Anduin was surprised that his father would admit to ignorance in front of a servant. His father replied with a quote that Anduin often thinks about:
"Only the fool thinks himself an expert in everything. The wise man admits his limitations and endeavors to know more.”
Mathias mentions that he finds satisfaction in serving Anduin as he did in serving his father, Varian, but he finds Anduin's rule a little more challenging as well, and Anduin acknowledges that he is willing to admit to his limitations. He is rattled because his morning - in which yet another letter to Tyrande and Malfurion had been returned unopened - had been difficult.
During their conversation, Anduin and Mathias hear something like an explosion. They find two farmers fighting - one clearly drunk - over damage that has been caused by the drunken farmer's experiments with creating moonshine. The drunken farmer, whose name is Jago, speaks angrily about the tragic events in Arathi Highlands - where Anduin had tried to organize a peaceful meeting between living humans and their Forsaken relatives, only for the plan to go wrong and the Forsaken participants to be butchered by Sylvanas. Jago blames Anduin for the tragedy before passing out, leaving Anduin feeling ashamed about not being able to stop Sylvanas.
Alleria arrives at this time, and it's revealed that Anduin had sent her to try find Sylvanas. Anduin is surprised when she says her search has been fruitless, as she was his best hope. He reflects on the unusual request Alleria had brought to him while they were facing N'Zoth. She had suggested Sylvanas was the perfect champion to face the old god. Anduin had refused the request, and now it worries him. He briefly worries if Alleria could be betraying the Alliance, before deciding she has more than proven herself, and to continue to trust her.
Later, Anduin joins Turalyon and Genn Greymane to examine the bodies of some Alliance scouts who had been monitoring the waters between Zandalar and the Eastern Kingdoms. At Anduin's question, Turalyon points out that while the arrows in the corpses appear to be Zandalari, they've been modified in a way that's similar to Dark Ranger arrows. Every corpse has only one arrow imbedded in it - a single deadly shot - which also suggests Dark Rangers. This suggests Dark Rangers are in Zandalar. And if Dark Rangers are there, Sylvanas herself may be with them. Genn is immediately keen to send a fighting force in, arguing that Sylvanas was the one to bring Queen Talanji of the Zandalari into the Horde, and may still be allied with her. However, Anduin and Turalyon are both concerned about acting too hastily, as it may threaten the armistice. That said, Anduin still has Sylvanas's actions in the Arathi Highlands on his mind, and he is determined not to let the opportunity to capture her slip through his fingers. He tasks Turalyon and Alleria with investigating the matter, naming Turalyon Lord Commander of the Alliance forces.
Before leaving the bodies, Anduin expresses a regret that these soldiers died, and wonders how he can ensure no soldier's name will ever be forgotten. Genn tries to comfort him by saying they knew this was always a possibility when they chose the life of a soldier, but Anduin refuses to believe they really expected to die.
After some time, Jaina checks up on Alleria and Turalyon, to discover they're extracting information through torture - Turalyon bounds a victim while Alleria invades their mind with the Void. They tell Jaina that they've discovered a Dark Ranger named Visrynn was smuggled to Zandalar recently, and the news pleases Anduin, who makes immediate arrangements to send Mathias Shaw to give chases. Jaina also tells Anduin about the torture, expecting him to be shocked. Instead, to her surprise, he endorses Alleria and Turalyon's actions, saying he trusts them to know the line, and not to cross it. Jaina is sad as she realizes Anduin's heart is hardening, just as hers had once.
Anduin sends Valeera Sanguinar to the Horde Tauren Chieftain, Baine Bloodhoof, to ask the Horde has spotted Sylvanas in Zandalar. Baine's response was quick and clear - they had not seen any sign of her. Later, Mathias is captured by Zandalari forces, but not before sending back irrefutable evidence that Dark Rangers are in Zandalar. Jaina arranges a meeting with Thrall which she, Anduin, Thrall and Ji Firepaw attend, to discuss the Dark Ranger presence. Thrall surprises Anduin and Jaina by letting them know he met with Malfurion and Tyrande - though to find them still angry and only interested in revenge against Sylvanas - and Anduin quickly draws the conversation to the business at hand, which impresses Thrall. Anduin shows Thrall the evidence that Dark Rangers are in Zandalar and asks him frankly if the Horde is betraying the armistice. When Thrall responds that they are no friends of Sylvanas, Anduin asks Jaina if she believes them. She replies that she does, as Baine would never be part of a plan to help Sylvanas. Thrall promises Anduin that he will go to Zandalar himself. Anduin then mentions Mathias, captured by the Zandalari queen, and that he would like him returned. Thrall asks to be given two days to investigate matters, and Anduin agrees.
Later, a disguised Anduin makes his way to Goldshire Inn. It's revealed that he often does this - greasing his hair so that it's oily and slick, wearing a ragged hood and brushing his clothes in mud - so that he's able to spend a few anonymous hours away from the pressures of the crown. He sometimes feels like a coin purse, with every new worry like a new coin, making the purse heavier and heavier until the fabric would rip and the coins would spill everywhere. So whenever he feels himself getting too heavy, he takes one of these trips - to stop himself from falling apart.
While he's journeying, he considers the worries on his mind: Sylvanas getting away, dead Alliance scouts, Alleria and Turalyon, Jaina questioning him, Tyrande and Teldrassil, the Forsaken in the Highlands, Mathias Shaw - a prisoner. They all weigh heavily on his mind, but in the Inn, he can pretend to just be a common soldier, having a drink. Some actual soldiers - new recruits - spot him and drag them into their company, boasting about the battle and glory they would soon have. The encounter only adds to Anduin's worries - he wonders if they will survive long, and even considers warning them not to sign up at all. Around this time, he spots Jaina, who instantly recognizes him. They head outside to speak where they won't be overheard, and Anduin tells Jaina frankly what he's doing. He also tells her about the soldiers, and as he speaks, feels another weight, like another coin falling into the purse. Jaina is sympathetic and understanding, leaving so that Anduin can continue to be anonymous.
True to his word, Thrall deals with the Dark Ranger presence in Zandalar - though Sylvanas was never there - and sends Mathias Shaw back to Anduin, along with a prisoner and a letter for Tyrande Whisperwind. The prisoner is Sira Moonwarden, an Undead Night Elf who joined Sylvanas after she was raised. Anduin asks the Undead Night Elf how she could turn on her people the way she has, and she taunts him in reply, telling him she feels nothing and will give them nothing. This angers Anduin, and for a moment a flicker of shadow magic appears for the first time - traveling down his arm and gathering in his palm. This startled Anduin and he is shaken as he looks around at his allies for a reaction. Mathias sees the shadow magic but does not catch Anduin's eye. However, Sira also sees it and she laughs, taunting Anduin more than ever and asking him how it feels to know he's lost.
Dark Abduction
Bolvar Fordragon, the Lich King, warns that now that Sylvanas has crossed the veil into the Shadowlands, she will return to abduct key figures vital to her plans. Sure enough, as he predicted, strange, armored, winged beings wielding chains of shadow magic come for Tyrande Wisperwind, Jaina Proudmoore, Baine Bloodhoof, Thrall, and Anduin Wrynn. Anduin is at his father's memorial with Genn Graymane when they come for him. Despite putting up a fight, Anduin is chained and flown away.
Shadowlands
The abducted leaders of Azeroth have been taken to Torghast, Tower of the Damned, in the Maw where they are tortured. Sylvanas now allied with the Jailer, tries to talk Anduin into joining their cause. When Anduin resists, Sylvanas tell him that it doesn't matter if he doesn't join them, they will find another who will serve their purpose.
The Heroes of Azeroth have come to the Shadowlands along with Darion Mograine and the Death Knights of the Ebon Blade on a quests to rescue the abducted leaders. They join up with Jaina and Thrall who have managed to escape from Torghast. Jaina leads the party to the Tremaculum where Anduin is being held. Breaking the chains that hold him, the party escapes the Tremaculum with Anduin and makes their way across the Maw in search of a portal that will allow them to escape. On the way, the Jailer appears and taunts them with Baine as his prisoner. They manage to rescue Baine and continue on to the portal. Once they have reached the portal, it becomes apparent that the Hero of Azeroth is the only person who can interact with it. As the portal charges, the band puts up a fight against the Jailer's forces but when the Jailer himself along with his whole army arrive, failure seems imminent. Thrall, Baine, and Jaina are recaptured, bound in shadow chains. As the army approaches, the Hero is still trying to activate the portal. Anduin sees what he must do. He calls upon the Light, summoning a barrier which holds the Jailer's forces back long enough for the Hero to get through the portal. When his barrier falls, Anduin is once again bound in chains, but he defies the Jailer, saying, "You have failed." "No," the Jailer replies, "I have exactly what I need." Anduin is returned to Torghast.
The Jailer sees Anduin as the perfect instrument for his plans and is ready to begin his preparation. Sylvanas reminds the Jailer of what Anduin is capable of when he believes in the cause and suggests that being patient and turning Anduin will be a better plan. The Jailer agrees to allow her to turn Anduin to their cause. During this conversation it is significant that the Jailer refers to Anduin as "it." He is just a thing, a tool, a weapon for the Jailer. Sylvanas, on the other hand, refers to Anduin as "him." He still retains his humanity in her eyes. He is a person, a potential ally, someone who can become an asset.
Sylvanas talks to Anduin, affording him a small measure of comfort by releasing him from his chains. She talks about the lack of choice in their lives, and in their afterlives. "We can't even choose who we..." she bursts out and stops before finishing the thought. She goes on to explain that she has sided with the Jailer because she believes that his way is the path to free choice, to the ability to finally control her own fate. Anduin suggests that she is just another weapon that the jailer is using for his own ends. Unperturbed, Sylvanas gives Anduin a choice: join them willingly, or by force. She believes that the path she has chosen will allow everyone free will.
Sylvanas' Choice
After Sire Denathrius, another ally of the Jailer, is defeated and captured by the Heroes of Azeroth, Sylvanas asks the Jailer about the plan to rescue him, but the Jailer brushes her off, telling her that Denathrius has served his purpose. As they speak, the Jailer is having a new mourneblade forged, a blade with a hilt that looks a lot like Shalamayne, and tells Sylvanas that the time has come to ready their next weapon. Anduin is that weapon and the Jailer intends to force Anduin to comply.
Sylvanas returns to Anduin to try to turn him willingly one last time. Anduin has not broken and is more resolved than ever. He suggests that that she is so desperate to give him this choice because she feels she never had a choice herself. Anduin has hit the nail on the head, and confronts Sylvanas about the shred of mortality she still has, the piece of her old life that desperately clings to hope. Reminding her that she was once the Ranger General, he turns the choice back on her, force him, or confront who she really is. Having seen first hand that the Jailer is planning to turn Anduin into a weapon, and having realized that Sire Denathrius was disposable, Sylvanas begins to think about her own role. Maybe Anduin is right. Maybe she is just a weapon to the Jailer as well.
Kingsmourne
Finally turned to the Jailer's will, Anduin is sent to Elysian Hold in Bastion, where his reputation allows him an audience with the Archon. As he is marched to the audience chamber, he passes Uther in chains being led away in disgrace. When he sees Anduin, a look of wonder, recognition, or remembrance crosses Uther's face, foreshadowing what is about to happen.
Once in the presence of the Archon, the Jailer speaks through Anduin, revealing that Anduin is merely a vessel used to gain him access to the Archon. Anduin's familiar look falls away and we see that he has been made into a Death Knight just as Arthas was. He attacks and wounds the Archon with his newly reforged blade, Kingsmourne, once Shalamayne, but as he does so Anduin seems to fight back to himself for a second. He is horrified by what he is being made to do, but the Jailer is too strong and he succumbs once again. Anduin takes the Archon's sigil and returns to the Jailer, apparently now completely his puppet.
Seemingly a complete automaton at this point, Anduin gives Kingsmourne and the sigil of the Archon to the Jailer as Sylvanas looks on. The sigil, the Jailer explains, is a key which, along with 3 others, will help him forward his plans. He seems to be creating chains to tether a floating island to the Maw. But Sylvanas, looking at the empty eyed Anduin, may be beginning to have doubts about her place in the plan.
