How to Play Brewmaster Monk in Shadowlands Pre-Patch
Brewmaster Monks are a tank spec. In the eight years since they were introduced in Mists of Pandaria, Brewmaster Monks have consistently been one of the top tank specs in the game, and they are usually very well-represented at the highest levels of raiding.
Unlike other tanks, Monks
damage, spreading out a large portion of all damage taken as a 10-second DoT (13 seconds with talents). This gives Monks an enormous advantage at living through burst damage, and burst damage is generally what kills tanks. Monks also have
and
, allowing them to clear a portion of Staggered damage and shield themselves from damage. This provides Monks with both reactive and proactive defensive tools and gives them the most complete toolkit of any tank. Their collection of defensive cooldowns is fairly limited, but that is more than made up for by Stagger.
Offensively, Brewmaster Monks play around using
on cooldown, and because their primary skill is an AoE, their offensive ability priorities don’t change significantly between single target and AoE. Brewmaster Monks also have exceptional mobility, arguably the best of any tank spec.
It’s a spec with a ton of strengths and very few weaknesses.

How Different Does Brewmaster Monk Feel in the Shadowlands Pre-Patch?
Brewmaster Monk has, in many ways, been totally changed. In other ways, it’s exactly the same. Given that Brewmaster has been a really successful spec in BFA, this is exactly what you would want in an expansion changeover. You don’t have to completely relearn everything from the ground up, but there are plenty of new aspects to get acquainted with, and new depth to explore. It’s also a great time for players who are new to the class to get started. They will have less catching up to do since everyone else is also in the learning process.
Learning to weave in
will be a key aspect of playing Brewmaster Monk in Shadowlands, and getting comfortable with it early on will be crucial. You will also need to get comfortable with drinking a lot of
. With Ironskin Brew gone, the balance between it and Purifying from Legion and BFA is gone.
has had its Brew Cooldown component nerfed (from 4 seconds to 3), so the total number of Brews you'll be chugging is slightly reduced from BFA, but the usage rate of
is still up by a lot. Get ready to chug! Chug! Chug! Chug!
Aside from the 1-second increase to Blackout Kick’s cooldown, the offensive rotation hasn’t changed all that much.
has been made into a more easy-to-use self-heal. It’s not a dramatic departure from how it has functioned in the past two expansions, but it is simpler and stronger. You will also need to choose between
and
depending on whether you are in single target or AoE. And finally, remembering that you now have 2 offensive cooldowns, up from 0, is important for maximizing your damage potential.
Monks have been given
and
, so you now have two modest offensive cooldowns. That's a pretty nice upgrade from previously having none!
Tl;dr Version:
Brewmaster has more defensive tools than it did in BFA, which is shocking, because it was already the tankiest class. It's also weaker in DPS, which is shocking, because it was already one of the weakest DPS. Hahaha!
New Abilities for Brewmaster Monk in Shadowlands Pre-Patch
Brewmaster Monks have gained a ton of new abilities for Shadowlands, and they all have a meaningful role in the spec’s playstyle.
- An immensely powerful defensive shield, it is empowered by using
, and its cooldown is reduced by
and
. It’s a lot like MoP/WoD Guard, but on the GCD.
- AoE filler skill. While it looks like it deals more damage than
, even in single target, it suspends your auto-attack, so it's not really worth using outside of AoE. It's also not particularly useful defensively.
- Known to the community as “Angry Dave.” He’s a simple AoE damage cooldown who provides a mixture of offensive and defensive value. He’s not a huge cooldown, but he’s better than nothing!
- A very simple offensive cooldown, useful for dealing a lot of damage to a boss or quickly killing an add.
- Passive source of Stagger increase. It’s easily maintained at 100% uptime just by playing the class normally.
is back as a talent. It's in the same tier as
, so it's not generally competitive, but it is available as a burst DPS option.
has also been added to the class as a talent. It is one of the weakest bonuses Brewmaster has ever been given. Its uptime is low, its effect is weak, and it's next to a terrific talent in
. Be prepared to never use it!
How Do AoE Target Caps Affect Brewmaster Monk in Shadowlands Pre-Patch
Brewmasters are being massively affected by AoE Target Caps in Shadowlands. At this point, every baseline AoE skill available to Monks is either hard-capped on targets, or soft-capped with low damage scaling on secondary targets.
Here’s a list of all the Brewmaster Monk skills these changes have affected:
- Now subject to diminishing returns once you hit more than five targets. It functions as a normal AoE against 5 or fewer targets.
- Subject to “square root” scaling, dealing full damage to the primary target, then dividing AoE damage evenly among the secondary targets.
- Capped at 6 targets.
- Capped at 6 targets.
While Brewmaster ostensibly gained AoE damage in the form of re-acquiring
, their damage in AoE situations has been substantially constrained from its already-subpar BFA state.
All AoE Target Caps
How Do the GCD Changes Affect Brewmaster Monk in Shadowlands?
Monks have been one of the tanks least affected by the GCD changes in BFA. Ironically, they are becoming one of the tanks most-affected in Shadowlands.
is on the GCD. This is one of the biggest downsides to Brewmasters in Shadowlands. It's still a great skill, but it's also annoying!
is also on the GCD. Most other offensive CD's have been removed from the GCD, but not our big, beautiful boy.
How Strong is Brewmaster Monk in Shadowlands Pre-Patch?
Defensively, Brewmasters gained even more defensive tools in Patch 9.0 than they have had during Legion and BFA. Between the addition of
, the buff to
, and the removal of Ironskin Brew with nerfs to the availability of
that still leave its cooldown much shorter than it was in BFA, Brewmasters are more self-sufficient than they have been since Warlords of Draenor, and they are able to remove more damage than they have been in the last two expansions. It’s a great time to be a Monk tank -- defensively.
Offensively, the class is still one of the weakest tanks, but that’s not unprecedented. Monks consistently simmed as one of the lowest-damage tanks (at times the absolute lowest) during large sections of BFA, but were still able to deal competitive damage during progression. Brewmasters were even the highest-damage tank during progression on Queen Azshara. Why?
Their abundant defenses meant they could orient toward more offensive gearing, talent setups, Essences, and playstyles than other tanks (and also that raid had terrific gear for Brewmasters). This absolutely seems to be the case again in Shadowlands, and while it doesn’t necessarily mean Monk will be the best offensive tank (or even good), they are still a spec with a ton of power. That makes them versatile, which makes them really good.
What are the Big Gameplay Changes for Brewmaster Monk?
The biggest gameplay changes are the loss of Ironskin Brew, which simplifies the class significantly, and the addition of
, which restores some complexity and adds a ton of power.
Additionally, Brewmaster Monks can dual-wield again, and Windwalkers can use 2-handed weapons again. This doesn’t have a major impact on the way the class handles, but it does give you access to two weapon enchants, and it makes swapping between Brewmaster and Windwalker easier than it has been for the past two expansions. You can use mostly the same gear for both specs.
How does the Loss of Corruption Affect Brewmaster Monk in the Shadowlands Pre-Patch?
Not at all. Losing Twilight Devastation and Versatile means you will deal less damage and have less overall stat budget, but these were both passive effects. They have no real impact on the gameplay of the class.
Best Talent Builds for Brewmaster Monk in Pre-patch
The standard talent setup for the pre-patch and Shadowlands should be the same as it has been during BFA.
There are a few talents you can swap around situationally:
requires a bit more mental energy to use as effectively as
, and it generally won’t be as simple or strong, but the potential to chain back-to-back Celestial Brews can be very strong, and a full Energy bar is always good.
is a decent defensive cooldown. It comes at the expense of constant damage reduction, so it’s not generally worth taking, but if you find yourself desperately needing another defensive cooldown, it’s a good option.
has not directly been changed, but the changes to the kit around it have impacted its value. Empowering Keg Smash now has a noticeable defensive value by reducing Celestial Brew’s cooldown. It’s harder to use, especially given the increase to Blackout Kick’s cooldown, but it can potentially provide more defenses when played well. Still, it’s more complicated, and the returns are relatively small. Use at your own peril.
There is no difference between the standard Mythic+ and Raid talent setups, but you will generally want to put more of an emphasis on constant power. Consequently, Brewmaster’s passive traits, which are already pretty good, tend to perform even better in Mythic+ than in raids.
can be useful as a small AoE damage increase, especially against larger pulls.
is extremely useful for pushing groups of enemies around, but
can be a good alternative for helping secure threat on packs of mobs.
Best Rotation for Brewmaster Monk in Pre-Patch
Here is a basic ability priority, along with some instructions on abilities to prioritize while tanking:
Never let
or
sit on cooldown while tanking. They are your core defensive skills, and you should always be using them to the fullest.
Keep
on cooldown. It fuels the cooldown reduction for
and
, and it is your strongest offensive skill. Maximize it!
Use
on cooldown.
Keep
on cooldown.
Try to keep
active at all times.
Avoid capping Energy by using
or
. Which should you use?
is better defensively and in single target.
does more damage in AoE. Choose based on your situation.
is a useful self-healing tool. Use it whenever you are in need of healing.
Use
and
as much as possible to maximize your damage.

Best Stats for Brewmaster Monk in Pre-Patch
As in BFA, Brewmaster Monks want to prioritize Versatility and Critical Strike. While they are relatively close in value, Versatility is generally harder to find on gear, so you should make an effort to prioritize it in your gems and enchants.
The priority when gearing goes like this:
Item Level
Sockets
Versatility
Critical Strike
Mastery >= Haste
Best Azerite Traits for Brewmaster Monk in Pre-Patch
Azerite Traits still function during the pre-patch, so enjoy them while you can!
- The best Azerite Trait around. If you’ve got it, flaunt it!
- It will continue to work during the Pre-Patch. It’s terrific. Keep using it!
- Adds a small amount of single-target damage, and helps reduce your damage taken overall by a decent amount. Not a mandatory trait, but good if you can get it.
- Provides a small chunk of damage, and a decent trickle of self-healing. Another decent, non-mandatory trait.
- With Ironskin Brew removed, this was changed to work with Shuffle -- making it basically the same as it ever was! Tuning-wise, it's a little underwhelming, worth ~1% damage reduction from armor per rank. Not worthless, but definitely weaker than most other options.
Best Essences for Brewmaster Monk in Pre-Patch
Essences will also continue to function during the pre-patch, and you will continue using the same ones you have during BFA, with one notable exception: Corruption Minor Powers are no longer very good.

Thanks for the guide! I am excited to play Brewmaster in upcoming expansion. I wish the damage would be a bit higher. For casual content, if I want to build more towards dps, what would be the talents I should pick and stats I should prioritize?

The TL;DR version is hilarious, thank you :) Also, what about clash? Or is that not available at level 50?

天神酒
on GCD is more than just annoying for some bosses. One boss, in particular, has a quick cast ability that will truck you without something up to mitigate it, and
酒醒入定
isn't enough with everything else going on.

Brewmaster Monks have two main weaknesses, poor self sustain and heavy magic damage boss fights, after 7 year of playing the spec I've come to accept those flaws and pray they keeps dodging the axe blizzard has been swinging at them all this time, I hope this Celestial Brew mini game will provide some fun whilst playing the spec, but worry that the developers will get it's scaling wrong, making it either too weak or too powerful, thou based on past experience I expect the latter to happen, it is a known fact that Brewmaster Monks scale insanely with gear, and will find themselves in a place of power where for the 8 seconds which Celestial Brew lasts wont be taking any damage (which sounds awesome, but it actually a very bad thing), which will make them very difficult to heal consistently.
