Holy Priest PvP Overview
Holy Priest is one of the most overlooked and underplayed healers in Arena, only being played by 0.56% of the ladder. As a comparison, Holy Paladin and Destruction Warlocks combined make up 20% of the ladder!
Having said that, with the correct gear and the right game knowledge, you can unlock the secrets with this class and see how powerful it is. With abilities like
, and with the new addition of
you can easily carry your team to victory in both 2v2 and 3v3!
was changed to be a 12 second cooldown that ignores healing reduction effects (THAT DOES NOT INCLUDE DAMPENING) so this spell is in a weird spot to where you almost need to play it to make up for the loss of the old cardinal mending however only into teams where you can 100% get it off at some point as it has a long cast time built into it
, which was previously a 10% instant heal that wasnt tied to prayer of mending that ignored healing reduction effects such as wound poison and even dampening. However! With 9.1 it was changed to always increase your Prayer of mending healing by 50% and it's jump range by 10 yards.
Tldr, this is a nice buff in 3v3 but a huge nerf in 2v2 where dampening hits instantly. So you'll notice your healing output is going to be very low until we have full gear again
In my opinion holy priest has moved away from being a slow paced '1 button' class to what i think is a healer that requires the most key presses and the fastest pace healer as your overall healing abilities do a lot less than other healers but you have more of them. So using them wisely and correctly is really the only way to stay competitive!
We got a lot more than just
- we also got
. I will go over further details in this guide!
Holy Priest in Patch 9.1
In 9.1 currently we're not looking that hot unfortunately. However I think that's solely down to not having full gear yet. The same happend in 9.0 when we didnt have completely full gear. Our healing output was really low then later on we became healing gods. We'll have to wait and see how it turns out when we have full season 2 gear!
I will update this further as the patch unveils!
Holy Priest Strengths in PvP
High Single Target Burst Healing
With the addition of
our healing playstyle becomes a lot more fluid. You'll still be pumping out a lot of healing via Cardinal Mending and Holy word: Serenity You also have
, which right now in its current state is healing people for more than their total HP. Think of this as a Lay on Hands with spells like
now resetting all of your Holy Words giving you an EXTRA 'Lay on Hands' ability. Also with talents like Miracle Worker, you have another Serenity to instantly top your teammates!
High CC Potential
you are able to CC someone alone for 10 seconds every 30 seconds; on top of this you have
which should be abused by anyone playing Holy Priest because if anyone interrupts a
then you are freely able to cast a
! Even though your
is a 1 minute cooldown with
, you are able to cast Smites to reduce the Cooldown of
With this, you have a deadly amount of control which can win games very fast for you!
Two Schools of Magic
This also affects Disc, however to a lesser extent. As I mentioned above, if you get kicked on
you can cast a
and vice versa. This is one of Holy Priest's
strengths in my opinion - Which school of magic are people suppose to interrupt? Holy for your healing abilities? Or
for you to be able to CC them. This is one of priests biggest advantages in the game, having two different schools of magic to actively cast is one of the more powerful baseline things healers can have!
Holy Priest Weaknesses in PvP
Interrupts and Spammable CC
Just like with any other healer, too many interrupts on your only school of magical healing will kill you and your team. If you want to try to use other abilities (which include
) to heal them, they quickly run out because it's simply not enough healing to be impactful.
Priests in general are famous for being trained by melees and not having the correct tools to deal with it unlike other healers - Druids with their forms, Paladins with their
, and Shamans with their
. Your long term mobility is very lacking and this brings me back to the aforementioned point of interrupts, because if you cant get away from melees training you then you stand little chance at casting anything at all against them too!
This being said there are certain classes that counter you completely without needing partners, specifically Resto Shamans, Death Knights, and Demon Hunters. These are all classes with an absurd amount of 'interrupts'.
Side Note: There is a small glimmer of hope for this however. You can play compositions that allow you to either be the hyper-aggressors or help you live until you can grab a win (classes with off-healing, a Freedom etc). This will work in your favour in these situations.
That being said, however with the new covenant abilities we get like
this helps us a little with mobility; but not nearly as much as other classes have baseline!
Our ‘Strong Compositions’ page covers the best compositions for your specialization and is kept up to date for the current meta. We explore the strengths of popular compositions and the role your specialization plays within them. Talents & Racials
Talents are an important choice in PvP.
will take you through each of the talents and PvP talents, giving advice on which ones will best suit your playstyle and which build is currently the strongest. Racials can also be important in PvP since many offer extra crowd control or escapes. See our Racials section on this page if you are starting a new character or considering a change!
Rotations & Strategy
While rotations aren't as clear-cut in PvP, it is essential to know how to maximise your output where possible to help turn the tide of a match. Strategy is another key element of PvP that can make or break a match. Our
Rotations and Strategy
page covers what you need to know about your important cooldowns, using your utility to your best advantage, and even common mistakes to avoid making.
The Gear and Legendaries
page of this guide covers how gear works for PvP in Shadowlands, and how to obtain gear through PvP Vendors and The Great Vault. On this page you will also find the best stat priority and what each stat does for your specialization, the best pieces of gear including legendaries, as well as which enchants and gems you should use for your gear. It also covers how to make your all-important trinket choice for PvP.
Covenants are a key feature of the Shadowlands expansion. Your choice of Covenant, Soulbind, and Conduits can have a large impact on your gameplay. Learn which are the strongest for your specialization

With our honor talent slots being tied up, it will be hard to get a handle over which talents are the best in which situation. Personally I think
in combination with
is a very powerful duo. That, tied up with Cardinal Mending, will open up Holy Priest to be an unstoppable force that can't get CCed unless you're 3v1. I say this because we now also have
which can be used like Premonition and break us out of CC like Polymorph etc. which is something that we were greatly missing as a Holy Priest. This is because as soon as our Ward and Fade were gone, we were out of options and CC was coming our way. The only way I'd see myself not using those 3 honor talents I mentioned above is when facing a Mage. I'd swap out Holy Ward for
to Thoughtsteal their Polymorph, not allowing them to use it for ~20 seconds!

Is this build specifically for arena or general bgs? I can tell you it does not work in bgs. Too many possible interrupts/stuns and not a great way to manage them all, especially if you're playing horde, and alliance are more melee oriented generally speaking. However, I can see how it could be valuable in the arena where enemy cool downs are more predictable/manageable.
I see you didn't include the
X'anshi, Return of Archbishop Benedictus
legendary. Does that mean that you think it's bad?
I play a fire mage and my friend plays a holy priest in 2v2 arena, what legendary do you think would be the best from him in this comp?
thank you :)
