Fire Mage PvP Overview
Fire is the most aggressive Mage specialization. It has many tools such as
to lock down enemy players for extended periods of time. Fire also has access to tons of burst damage via
and other abilities. When a Fire Mage gets a crowd control chain going, it can snowball the game extremely quickly and lead to quick victories. Fire Mage is a fairly straight-forward spec and pretty easy to pick up, but it has a lot of depth that will take you some time to learn by playing.
Fire Mage Strengths in PvP
Fire Mage has the most crowd-control of any Mage specialization. Utilizing
in combination with
to land (almost) guaranteed CC on the enemy healer can set your team up for quick wins.
Multiple Schools of Magic
Fire is also very strong in PvP because unlike many other specializations, they have access to three schools of magic: Frost, Fire, and Arcane. Because interrupts are so prevalent in PvP, (
, etc.) having the ability to get interrupted on one school and immediately start casting in another is a huge advantage. Knowing this is imperative to playing the specialization correctly.
Extremely High Burst
Fire Mage is known to do large amounts of damage in very short windows. Using
in combination with
, along with your normal damage rotation, you can take a large portion of an enemy's health in 2-3 seconds. Alternatively, you can also use the PvP talent
in combination with these spells to do even higher amounts of burst.
Multiple Burst Windows
Fire Mage has historically been a spec that is extremely threatening when cooldowns are available and lackluster when they are not. However, 9.1 brings us a brand new PVP talent called
, an extremely powerful and relatively short cooldown ability that is already proving to offset the nerfs to Fire Mage in 9.1. The main strength of
is that it allows Fire Mage to have another source of strong damage outside of
which allows us to cycle through enemy defensives much more quickly.
Fire Mage has access to many different tools that make it durable in PvP. Baseline abilities such as
give Fire the ability to slow down the enemy team when being pressured.
provides a huge shield on a relatively short cooldown. Talent choices like
allow you to kite through, as well as tank, tons of damage. The innate defensive abilities of Fire Mage
also give you some more room to breathe when under heavy pressure from the enemy team.
Fire Mage Weaknesses in PvP
Even with all of their utility, Fire Mage still has a hard time dealing with being tunnel-visioned down by melee classes. Part of the reason is the lack of a strong slow effect. It can also be very difficult to deal with the tons of interrupts that come out from melee 'cleaves'.
While Fire Mage has tons of burst every two minutes with
, their consistent pressure is not the best because getting lots of casts off in arena can be difficult. A lot of the time, your pressure outside of offensive CDs will come from
, which has a very long cast time (4 seconds).
Fire Mage in Shadowlands Patch 9.2
Fire Mage is receiving no direct changes in 9.2 and will remain a top tier ranged DPS.
Talents and Racials in Shadowlands Patch 9.2
There are no notable changes to talents or racials in 9.2 which means the optimal choices remain the same; Alliance Mages will gravitate towards Human for
and Horde Mages opt for Orc due to
Rotations and Strategy in Shadowlands Patch 9.2
While the Fire Mage rotation and skill priority remains unchanged in 9.2, the new 4-set tier bonus
will grant a hefty amount of cooldown reduction which will enable extended burst cycles.
Gear and Legendaries in Shadowlands Patch 9.2
A common theme across all classes in 9.2 is the ability to acquire their respective 2-set and 4-set tier bonuses as well as being able to equip a Covenant Legendary alongside the current Legendary of your choice. The 4-set bonus
is incredibly powerful for Fire Mage and will likely solidify it as a top tier caster in 9.2. On the flip side when we look at Covenant specific Legendaries, none of them are particularly powerful or engaging and simply provide some small quality of life changes. In terms of itemization I expect that Fire Mages will want to continue prioritizing Haste and Versatility while rushing the 4-set tier bonus.
Covenants in Shadowlands Patch 9.2
Night Fae has reigned supreme since the dawn of Shadowlands and it will remain to be the case in 9.2. Night Fae simply provides the highest damage throughput, survivability, utility, and mobility across all Covenants and none of the Covenant specific Legendaries are powerful enough to contest this.
Talents & Racials
Talents are an important choice in PvP. This page will take you through each of the talents and PvP talents, giving advice on which ones will best suit your playstyle and which build is currently the strongest. Racials can also be important in PvP since many offer extra crowd control or escapes. See our Racials section on this page if you are starting a new character or considering a change!
Rotations & Strategy
While rotations aren't as clear-cut in PvP, it is essential to know how to maximise your output where possible to help turn the tide of a match. Strategy is another key element of PvP that can make or break a match. Our Rotations and Strategy page covers what you need to know about your important cooldowns, using your utility to your best advantage, and even common mistakes to avoid making.
The Gear and Legendaries page of this guide covers how gear works for PvP in Shadowlands, and how to obtain gear through PvP Vendors and The Great Vault. On this page you will also find the best stat priority and what each stat does for your specialization, the best pieces of gear including legendaries, as well as which enchants and gems you should use for your gear. It also covers how to make your all-important trinket choice for PvP.
Covenants are a key feature of the Shadowlands expansion. Your choice of Covenant, Soulbind, and Conduits can have a large impact on your gameplay. Learn which are the strongest for your specialization here.
Macros & Addons
Macros and addons can assist with streamlining your gameplay. Macros can make your gameplay more fluid, and addons provide important information that can help you make decisions before, during, or after an arena match. Find out which macros and addons are best for your specialization here.
Fire Mage in Patch 9.1.5
9.1.5 has brought relatively few changes to Fire Mage, however,
now provides 35% barrier effectiveness in PVP(down from 50%). This has a noticeable impact on Fire Mage survivability and most of the value of
will now come from the dispel protection it provides. Additionally, this change will open up the viability of some more offensive legendary powers such as

damage reduced by 10%.
is sparsely used in PvP and when it is, it is rarely for the damage. I expect this nerf to have little impact to the strength of the spec.
damage reduced by 10%. Since Fire Mage almost never talents into this, this change has no impact on Fire Mage in PvP.
cooldown reduction for Combustion reduced to 1 second (was 1.5 seconds). This nerf is fairly significant since it slows down how often we can get
back and I suspect that it may be enough for Fire Mage to start talenting back into
Fire damage bonus reduced by 20%.
has been arguably the strongest conduit to exist for any class in the game so this nerf definitely hurts, however,
scales well with item level which will somewhat offset this nerf later in the season.
has been made into an Arcane Mage specific PvP talent. This change is a bit of a double-edged sword because while
was extremely powerful against certain classes, it was also the biggest counter to Fire Mage in Mage versus Mage matchups. The impact of
being effectively removed is reliant on how the meta develops throughout the season.
Dampen Magic has been removed from the game. This talent was previously an extremely strong defensive talent against magical DoT effects and then nerfed to the point where it was no longer used. This change has no impact.
Our most powerful Soulbind (Dreamweaver) has received some solid buffs as well as strong additions to the Soulbind tree in 9.1.
now grants more Haste and for a longer period of time and
is now available in a new row which appears to be a powerful defensive option.
is a new PvP talent that was introduced in 9.1.0 and is the saving grace for all the nerfs Fire Mage received. This talent is incredibly powerful and opens up so many opportunities to land kills outside of cooldowns as it does sizable damage and is on a fairly short cooldown; learning how to set up proper
s will be key to mastering Fire Mage in 9.1.
