The Story of Chains of Domination, Patch 9.1's Main Storyline

Chains of Domination is the main storyline introduced in Patch 9.1. While it follows on from the Covenant Campaigns introduced in

, it is mostly the same for every Covenant as well as for both factions.
Chains of Domination
The traitorous Sire Denathrius has been defeated, but the power of the Maw still grows. Return to the Maw with the restored strength of the kyrian, necrolords, night fae, and venthyr and together strike back at the Jailer in the next content update, Chains of Domination.

Chains of Domination Summary
Battle of Ardenweald
You are summoned to Oribos to learn the dire news that Anduin has become the Jailer's pawn, and that he recently wounded Kyrestia the Firstborne and took her sigil of Bastion. Each of the Eternal Ones possesses a sigil that represents their Covenant and its purpose, but which can also act as keys to forbidden knowledge. The Jailer is after these sigils, and launches an assault on Ardenweald and Oribos in an attempt to gain the sigils belonging to the Winter Queen and the Arbiter. While the Ebon Blade protects Oribos, the player rushes to join in Ardenweald's defense against and assault lead by Sylvanas Windrunner herself. Though you do your best to defend Ardenweald, Anduin manages to get away with the Winter Queen's sigil. You return to Oribos with the news, to find the city has also just dealt with a Mawsworn assault.
Maw Walkers
It's decided that it's time for the Covenants to go on the offensive and take the fight to the Maw. Recently, the Jailer has pulled a new realm into the Maw: Korthia, the City of Secrets. A special waystone has been detected in this area, that Tal-Inara can link to your anima in order to create a gateway that anyone can travel through - not just the Maw Walker. Ve'nari helps you find Korthia, where you meet with Korthia's Attendants, known as Keepers, and find the waystone at their Keeper's Respite. You are recognized as the "True Maw Walker", a person from prophecy, and you are able to unlock the waystone, opening the way for the armies of the Covenants waiting in Oribos. The assault on the Maw has officially begun.
Focusing the Eye
While in Desmotaeron - the area of the Maw occupied by Helya, Baron Vyraz, and their forces - you come across and rescue Danica the Reclaimer, one of Odyn's Val'kyr. You discover Helya is using Val'kyr in a ritual to empower the Nine - Val'kyr who are loyal to Sylvanas Windrunner - before you return with Danica to Skyhold. Odyn is furious, and decides to answer the insult by specifically targetting the Eye of the Jailer - which was once Odyn's own eye, but which he plucked it out and exchanged with Mueh'zala centuries ago for a glimpse into the Shadowlands. Odyn sends Danica and other worthy Val'kyr with you back to the Maw, where you challenge and blind the Eye, sending it fleeing, and removing the Eye of the Jailer debuff forever.
The Last Sigil
You learn that the Jailer is seeking the Primus's sigil, and find out that the Primus hid his sigil in the vaults of Korthia shortly before he disappeared. You also learn that the Jailer wants the five sigils of the Eternal Ones to unlock something called the Sepulcher of the First Ones. Of course, you need to try get to the Sigil of the Primus first - which you manage to do, but you find it's all tangled up with the magic of a memory - similar to those memories you've been bringing to the Runecarver. You bring the sigil to the Runecarver to see if he can help untangle it, and it has an incredible effect on him, turning him into the Primus. Unfortunately, the Jailer and Anduin attack and are able to take the sigil from you, but you do manage to escape with the Primus to Korthia. You make plans for the Covenants to forge new sigils, and resolve to defend the Arbiter's sigil at all costs.
An Army of Bone and Steel
You head back into Desmotaeron, along with Baroness Draka and Thrall, to deal with Baron Vyraz and Helya once and for all. You prepare the area for a full-scale assault from the Covenants, and you manage to kill Vyraz and banish Helya. Finally, you witness the touching reunion as Draka and Thrall recognize each other as mother and son.
The Unseen Guests
You investigate the presence of Dreadlords infiltrating your forces, and head to Revendreth to ask Prince Renathal and the Stonewright to help, as they have experience dealing with the Nathrazim. The Stonewright willingly joins your cause, but her Medallion of Wrath is almost immediately stolen by Dreadlord infiltrators. You pursue and finally corner them, only to have Mal'Ganis reveal the true plan: to recover Sire Denathrius, who was still being held captive in Remornia atop Dawnkeep Tower. Though you are able to capture Mal'Ganis and recover the Medallion of Wrath, the Dreadlords are successful in their plan, and it's made clear that they've been playing the longest possible game - from their time in the Legion to their time with the Scourge, it has all been part of it.
The Power of the Night
You help Huln Highmountain track down and recruit two former Night Warriors - Khaliiq from Maldraxxus, and the Stonewright from Revendreth - to help with a ritual for Tyrande Whisperwind. Thankfully, the ritual is successful. Tyrande is saved from being overcome with the power of the Night Warrior, and you learn that Elune is the Winter Queen's sister. What's more, Elune leaves behind "The Sisters' Tear", which becomes the new sigil of Ardenweald.
A New Path
The Ascended Kyrian Thenios approaches you - to request that you help retrieve a missing fragment of Uther's soul, which was torn from him when he was killed by Frostmourne. You venture into Torghast, to find this soul fragment, the "Remnant of Justice", and then help Uther as he faces his most painful memories and deepest regrets - most of all, his regret that he betrayed his Paladin vows when he failed to show Arthas compassion. The Kyrian become convinced that the Forsworn were not all wrong - they were right to question the practice of forcing all to forget their memories - and decide to change the rules. No longer will Kyrian be required to give up their memories - it will be optional. As part of this, Polemarch Adrestes rededicates the Temple of Loyalty, changing it to the Temple of Devotion. The Forsworn are invited to once more join the Kyrian, Adrestes is made the Paragon of Devotion, and a new sigil of Bastion is forged.
What Lies Ahead
You deal with the aftermath of the Sanctum of Domination raid. The Jailer has succeeded in his plan of opening up a portal to the Sepulcher of the First Ones, where he hopes to gain the power and knowledge that can reshape reality itself. The Primus is preparing to open a portal of his own, using the four reforged Covenant sigils, but still needs something to replace the fifth - the Arbiter's sigil, which once beloned to the Jailer and which he has reposessed. We examine a clue that Anduin left behind, showing us a memory in which he tells Sylvanas Windrunner that he hopes we will remember him for who he was, and not who she forced him to become. Finally, we witness several converations between important characters as they reunite.

. All souls were being sent direclty to

, and an anima drought had left the Covenants vulnerable and weak. You helped discover that

To fight a great evil which had slain many.
A coalition of champions had formed to kill the dark god who'd landed on our world. To succeed we needed the power the last Speaker had tried to invoke from Mother Moon.
<Thiernax chuckles sadly.>
We fought over that. It had already killed his mother. He did not wish for it to kill his husband too. But Elune's power was one of our greatest weapons against the monsters. So I did the ritual. Survived it. He stood by me. Our eyes dark as the new moons, we fought the monsters.
I did not foresee the cost.

What was the cost?
Thiernax:
The price of Elune's dark power was my life.
Mortals are not meant to hold such things. One way or another, it would kill me. For my world, my people, my family, I was willing to make that sacrifice.
Qadarin was not so willing to let it happen. To my eternal regret, trying to share the burden killed us both.

After I was granted Elune's dark gift, I fed my rage with my losses and then with my victories. I protected my people. I killed the ones who harmed us. Then their allies. Then ones who hadn't stopped our enemies, or who stood by. Then the ones I thought hadn't acted quickly enough. And so on...
I erased whole societies from the world, and left nothing but ruins in my wake. After all, if nothing was left to harm us, we couldn't be hurt.
In the end, the only thing left that threatened my people, was me.
I was killed by a friend who too wished to protect our people.
Only in Revendreth after much... contemplation, did I come to understand the depth of my wrath and the gravity of my sins. I learned from my experience how to help others with others with their own.

When I arrived in Bastion, all I could think of was what had been done to me. I let bitterness, pain, and vengeance consume me, and I did the unforgivable. I see now how wrong I was, and I wish my actions could be undone. Alas, I must live with the consequences of my actions. Worse than that, Arthas must live with them as well.
I do not know if I can ever forgive myself for that.
But the kyrian are forgiving, and the Forsworn are willing to put their differences aside. The rift between them is on the mend, and this newfound unity will bring a new era. You started me down the path of healing as well, and I must follow it to its end, however painful it might be.
You helped me find the Light again, and for that I am forever grateful.
My position as Hand of Purity is one of service. I guided aspirants through cleansing their past lives, letting go of the memories that clung to them.
That is in the past now.
I will posit that I understand the Forsworn more than ever. Lysonia's betrayal and descent into madness haunts me every day. My soulbind... I still see her when I turn, hear her voice calling my name.
In the past I might have cleansed this memory. Erased the burden from my mind. But Lysonia's presence is steeped in my most cherished memories. How could I forget her without losing a part of myself?

My friend... I am overwhelmed.
I spent so long, too long, as an aspirant due to the drought. Once we met, everything became a blur. We did what other kyrian, ascended and aspirant alike, have never done before. We fought paragons! We escaped the Maw, multiple times! We even established relationships with the other realms.
Am I truly worthy of becoming Hand? Do I know how to stop fighting, when I've been doing so for so long?
With our friends by my side, I must do the best I can. As long as we work together, we will succeed.
A long time ago, I worked my way up from aspirant to a disciple of Loyalty. For eons after I have served the Archon willingly as an overseer, and her voice when she is not present.
In all that time, Bastion never changed.
Kyrian had struggled with their path before, either sent to a temple for more training or sent to the Arbiter once again for a different afterlife. The Forsworn seemed nothing out of the ordinary at first, until their wings turned dark and their ranks grew.
You and your friends helped us see the error of our blind ways. What is more, you helped us regain our compassion, find our new Path.
I am ready now to help usher this new way in and to work together for a stronger, healthier Bastion.
Honestly, I am not sure how I became so closely involved in such momentous events. I am just an aspirant! I still struggle constantly with my cleansings and trials--I am nowhere near ascension.
I offered Kleia support long after her first soulbind ascended and she lost all contact with her. We grew closer, becoming soulbinds ourselves, able to face whatever challenge together! Who could have predicted what we would face, and the impact we'd leave?

Words cannot begin to describe the joy of being ascended at last. The kyrian are beginning to heal--and the Forsworn as well.
While some may not find their actions easy to forget, I think we all have it in our hearts to forgive.
The soul I bore was a champion of her world. She protected her people and fought against the endless demonic army that invaded her snowy homeland. She gave everything she had to others, from her supplies to her time and energy.
A soul like that did not deserve any punishment, let alone the torment of the Maw. We had heard as aspirants that souls were being wrongly sent there, but even souls such as hers? It rattled me to my core.
I had no choice. I knew what I had to do. I joined the Forsworn, pushing for change so that we could save these souls. I did not mean to harm Pallessa in any way, but now I am determined to make it up to her.
Through Wisdom's guiding hand I spent my time as an aspirant focused on my studies. I preferred lectures and reading to personal connection.
Then I met Achillon. His warmth guided me through my fears and anxieties, helped strengthen my resolve for my trials. I helped him learn to breathe, to collect himself and his impulses before taking action.
But in the end he rushed in, taking my confidence and hope with him. I saw him, the most loyal of us, fall before my eyes. I came out the other side bereft of hope or joy.
I thought he was lost to me. I intended to cleanse him from my mind, but it felt unfair to him. Now seeing him once again, as an ally... I do not know how I feel, or what will happen. But I can navigate this. I must.
I love my Kala so dearly, and cherish her presence in my life. She has provided me joy with her playful charm, and comfort when working through a difficult memory.
However, it is impossible to get her to listen to me! Nemea is going to help us build our relationship and become even closer.

Zosime and Kala have a strong bond, but their communication is lacking. I will teach Zosime to capture the behaviors that she wants Kala to perform, then connect those behaviors with words.
Lentios will teach Kala how to speak with Zosime as well, such as when she wants to stretch her wings and when she wants to play. These skills with help both of them form a strong relationship. One built on mutual respect.
Maw Walker, I thank you. If it hadn't been for you, I might never have made it out of Maldraxxus.
I have suffered, it is true, but I have not given up. That was in part because of your example. You would not leave any of us behind, and your steadfast determination fueled my own.
Although he cannot say it, I know Hipokos feels the same way. We've bonded, he and I. I suspect he will continue to be my eyes, and I will be his voice.
Wisdom is not simply knowing the right thing to do in every situation. It is a tool you use, yes, but it is also something you share, and something you take in kind.
Not only have you shown wisdom in your actions, Maw Walker, but you've shared your wisdom with so many--and Bastion has blossomed because of it.

As aspirants, Artemede and I quickly formed a bond akin to siblings. It was clear destiny brought us together as soulbinds, always stronger when working together.
But in my times apart from my sister, Kynthia had captured my heart. We snuck off to watch the anima flow together, spending tender moments in each other's company.
When she disappeared from us, I feared the worst. Artemede reminded me to have faith in Kynthia and her strength. When I found her during our Maldraxxus mission, we sprinted to embrace before fighting side by side.
My time in Maldraxxus started grim. I watched my fellow kyrian tortured. I witnessed Thales blinded. The House of Constructs kept me alive for purposes I never intend to know.
With each passing day I continued to break. I found some solace in talking to Thales and the stewards as we prayed our allies would show up. We almost gave up until you saved us, Maw Walker. We thank you eternally.
The House of the Chosen proved different. Accepting. Even after the white wings of our allies came to fight with us, after I was reunited with my love, I knew we had to stay and help those who took us in.
But now, as they are set upon their path once more, we have returned. And I am happy to be back.

Of course, with more work comes more chaos. I've got stewards and aspirants alike contributing to the cause however they can. Perhaps one day, new aspirants will start flooding in once more... but for now we have plenty on our hands.
I am truly humbled that you would freely give so much of your time and aid to us, Maw Walker. To see such dedication from a kyrian is expected, but a mortal? You honor us all.
When I first met you and Kleia in Redridge, I knew there was something different about you both. Kleia was not satisfied with the status quo. Her loyalty to the Archon and the Path guided her actions, but she always pushed for better.

Nemea has always been the outgoing one of us, forming relationships with larion and kyrian alike. Even now she trains an aspirant in larion handling. She can't even stop to enjoy the party... though I suppose she is enjoying it in her own way.
Centurions have always been my specialty. We understand each other. When something goes wrong with a phalynx, I know exactly how to fix it. Interaction with my peers is straightforward. The social niceties are unnecessary. Instead, we get to the point discussing improvements and challenges in our work with centurions.
I can't say that I am not somewhat jealous of my soulbind and the grace she holds. But our rivalry makes us both stronger, and pushes us out of our comfort zones to improve.

I devoted myself to overseeing and advising aspirants long, long ago. I was not the only one at first... but as the drought persisted, my peers were needed elsewhere until I was the only one left.
My orders were to keep the aspirants training, to bide our time until the drought passed. I was not to tell them that every single soul was sent straight to the Maw, that the Shadowlands had broken down. I told them what I could... but I was alone and had to keep myself calm.
For my hard work to be first recognized via my inclusion of the Path of Ascension, and now again as the new Polemarch of Bastion... I recognize no higher honor.

Instead, it's as if a part of him was frozen in time - a part that has caused him to reflect on the choices he's made ever since players helped return it to him during last week's campaign chapter.

The word "zereth" means 'cornerstone' or 'keystone' - the exact definition is
actually mentioned in the introductory notes found in the Grimoire of the Shadowlands and Beyond
as one that's caused debate among the Brokers.
I can say with confidence that you, Overseer, must have been as intriduged as I by the promising intial reports delivered by Al'firim on his journey to locate the Sepulcher of the First Ones. The fact that he decoded any of the glyphs at all was more progress than has been made in many ages of study (though whether "zereth" is best translated as "keystone" or "cornerstone" remains a subtle, yet ongoing, debate)
"Mortis" is the Latin word for death, and seems to have similar if not the same connotations when it's
shown up
in World of Warcraft before. However, it's interesting to note that the mortal use of the word "death" is very different to the way it's used in the Shadowlands - so much so it's almost offensive.
Of secondary concern is the difference in nomenclature that exists between our kind and the mortals. While we, of course, know Death to be the eternal force of magic woven throughout the very fabric of the Shadowlands and beyond, mortals have an entirely different—and shockingly obtuse—interpretation. They use the word "death" to signify the end of their existence within the mortal plane. My apologies, Overseer, if you find that revelation to be as distasteful as I do. But I fear that to accurately convey information on mortal perceptions, I must, from time to time, include observations from their own flawed perspective.

Did I miss the part where a new Necrolord sigil was forged? You get to see the other three forged in-game, but I don't recall seeing the Primus make a new sigil, and I read through this entire article and didn't see it mentioned here either. All that happens during the Necrolord portion is that Draka is named as the new Margrave of the House of the Chosen, but there's still no Margrave for the Houses of Constructs, Eyes, or Plagues, with Eyes and Plagues barely even existing as houses at all.

I am completely stuck at 8/9 in the campaign. I presented the sigils, examined the compass..the primus went thru his portal...but my Campaign Progress still shows What Lies Ahead as incomplete. How did I miss something?

I do not know if this is for Fae players only or for everyone to find, but there is an additional conversation that takes place in the Heart of the Forest after the
Winter's Vigil
quest between Tyrande Whisperwind and Astarii Starseeker. Click on Astarii at the entrance of the Mushroom Ring to trigger the conversation. It seems they have a winged spy, M'Can, strategically placed to possibly listen in, as is R'chll who appears to be watching over Ysera...but I will leave that for you to decide.
Astarii Starseeker says "High Priestess! Even in the depths of the Maw, I could feel your presence. I knew you would not abandon us."
Tyrande Whisperwind says "Thank you, child... but I nearly did. I was so consumed by the fires of vengeance that I was blind to the ashes at our feet."
"I see now that while many of our people desire retribution, what we need most is renewal."
Astarii Starseeker says "As the new moon gives way to the full, as darkness recedes in the light."
"Be it as the Night Warrior or as the High Priestess, I have faith in your leadership of the kaldorei."
Tyrand Whisperwind says "Then I shall endeavour to be worthy of it. Watch over us from the boughs, Astarii. Elune-adore."

There is also additional dialogue between the souls of the Night Elves you rescue from the Maw as you carry to them to Ardenweald (if you don't sign off the quest immediately), but alas I forgot to save it so perhaps someone can help. They were discussing how they died and their last memory of each other at Teldrassil. A bit grim.
