Welcome to Wowhead's Retribution Paladin guide. This guide will help you master your Retribution Paladin in most forms of PvE content in the game, including raids and dungeons.

Retribution Paladin Overview
Retribution Paladins are holy crusaders who use a Two-Handed weapon to turn the power of the Light into powerful damaging abilities and bring justice and vengeance to their enemies. Retribution is the damage specialization of Paladin and is a melee spec, although it has many abilities that can be cast from range as well.
The core of our rotation is centered around using abilities like

to generate Holy Power, which is consumed to deal potent damage with abilities like

. Although Paladin's mobility options are somewhat limited, you will have access to a large array of buffs for yourself and your party to help you throughout a fight, as well as strong defensive and healing capabilities for your role.
If playing a melee DPS with strong group support, healing options, and powerful burst damage cooldowns sounds appealing, then Retribution might be for you.

Retribution Paladin Changes in Midnight
With Midnight, WoW's core combat systems have received substantial changes. As is the case for many other specs, Retribution has received impactful changes, with several abilities being removed, added, or reworked.

Retribution Paladin Hero Talents: Templar and Herald of the Sun
Retribution has access to two Hero Talent trees: Templar and Herald of the Sun.
Templar Retribution Paladins gain access to
圣光之锤
, a powerful Holy Power spender that you can use during your burst windows. You'll also rain down
苍穹之锤
s from the sky upon your enemies, which are automatically cast through different spells and buffs.
Herald of the Sun Retribution Paladins are focused on periodic damage effects, especially their signature,
晨光
. These effects also trigger automatically during your cooldowns. On top of that, Herald of the Sun also features buffs to
神圣风暴
and
愤怒之锤
.
Currently, Templar is slightly ahead on damage compared to Herald of the Sun, but the gap between them is not significant. You can comfortably play Herald of the Sun in any content as well.
Talent Builds
Playing a Retribution Paladin in
Retribution Paladins use a priority system rather than a strict rotation. More details can be found in the rotation guide. The important things to keep in mind in most situations are:
Try to not waste Holy Power.
This is the most important thing to remember when playing Retribution. A significant portion of our damage comes from spending our Holy Power, so overcapping it will reduce your damage significantly.

debuffs applied to enemies. These effects significantly buff your other damage.
Use longer cooldowns as often as possible and together. If they end up held and the cooldowns are misaligned, they will be a lot weaker individually than when they are properly used together.
Gearing a Retribution Paladin in
In general, you'll want to maintain a good balance of all Secondary stats. Haste and Mastery tend to be slightly more valuable than others, but Retribution tends to be a spec that never only wants to stack one or two specific stats. If you're unsure, simming your gear options is generally the best way to figure out your optimal gear setup.

What Professions are Best for Retribution Paladin?
Compared to previous expansions, professions in provide minimal benefits towards the performance of your spec. This means that Retribution Paladin players can choose any profession according to personal preference. You might consider
Blacksmithing
to craft your own armor, as many profession items can be very close to your
Best in Slot gear
. On the other hand, you may opt for Alchemy to craft consumables or Enchanting to enchant gear without relying on the Auction House.

What Race is Best for Retribution Paladin?
For Alliance, Dwarves and Dark Iron Dwarves have similarly strong racial bonuses for damage, while for Horde, Tauren has the strongest bonuses. That said, you shouldn't feel pressured to just pick your race based on damage if you don't want to, as the differences are usually not too large, Lightforged Draenei being the one outlier with much worse bonuses than the rest.

Here is a macro I made up I want to share. It is very simple and fun to use because I didn't really like Retribution Paladin for years because I kept away from writing macros.
/castsequence reset=6, Crusader Strike, Blade of Justice
It's pretty easy. The reset cool down should be enough.

The fantasy section looks lackluster to me. Here's my idea for a revision:
Where other paladins would use their powers to protect the innocent, Retribution Paladins opt to punish the guilty. They zealously channel the Light to transform themselves into avenging angels, smiting their enemies and aiding their allies in doing the same. No matter how dire the situation becomes, the paladin remains ardent, faithful, and brave to the very end.

Retribution has received almost no changes to its current abilities. The only change was a healing nerf and Legendary quality of life change for Venthyr, a covenant that Retribution doesn't use anyway. This is a opinion not fact,I play two pallies and my main uses Venthyr and the other setup your way and not a lot of difference in dps plus venthyr helps raid group with heals and adds to my burst with hammer up for a long time.Please keep opinions to just that and remind people to play what they like and not just what some think are best dps.

was placed in the weakness section for ret pallies? I'm coming back to the game for DF and I never heard of ret pallies being iffy except for like in vanilla.

I will be boycotting Wowhead guides until Bolas is removed from any and all guide-writing duties.
This is, as you can guess, related to the recent Discord drama where Bolas is having a complete mental breakdown because he didn't get what he wanted.
