Balance Druid Rotations in Dragonflight
Balance Druid Tier Set Changes
2-Set
-
摘星揽月
- Starsurge and Starfall increase the damage of your next Wrath or Starfire by 20%, stacking up to 3 times.
4-Set
-
浩瀚之触
- When you enter Eclipse, your next Starsurge or Starfall costs no Astral Power and deals 35% increased damage.
TLDR: Cycle eclipses as fast as possible, spend your 4-set on
星涌术
on Single Target, spend your 4-set on
星辰坠落
on AOE, and do not cap your 2-set procs.
You really need to be tracking both the 2-set and 4-set procs diligently to make sure you're using them as fast as possible. In addition to not capping your 2-set procs you want to spend them on Starfire and this is another one of the reasons we sit in
月蚀
as often as we reasonably can.
Here
is a weakaura that contains tracking for both the 2-set and 4-set among other procs.

Advanced Balance Druid Tips
Here are some tips and tricks you can use to squeeze out a bit extra DPS.
星辰领主
and
星辰轰鸣
:
These talents have a bit of anti-synergy when both talented. There is a pretty simple solution as to what to do though to optimize DPS with these. The answer is just optimize
星辰领主
. By making sure you have the best amount of Starlord uptime as possible Rattle uptime will be fine and your damage will be more or less optimized.
星辰耀斑
on AOE?
On multi-target it is pretty difficult to get Stellar Flare's out in a timely manner. Thus whenever you are starting an AOE pack you really should hold off on Flaring mobs until the absolute last priority. With our tier set, the only thing that Stellar Flare is worth more on AOE than is an unbuffed
星火术
. This will mean that for extended duration pulls (45s - 1m) then you will flare most of your targets, but generally you do not spam Stellar Flare.
月蚀
vs
日蚀
You always go into Lunar Eclipse for damage. Once in Lunar Eclipse you
星火术
in any 2 or higher target situation. On Single Target you
愤怒
in Lunar Eclipse UNLESS you have a
星影之拥
proc which then you would use on
星火术
.
When to hold Offensive Cooldowns
The decision of holding on and using your offensive cooldowns is going to be some of the most important decisions you make in a raid or dungeon. Some of the general things I look at when determining whether I should hold cooldowns are:
How long will I be holding them?
What am I holding them for?
What benefit does using them give to the group?
When addressing how long I will be holding the cooldowns for, I usually ask myself if I will lose uses over the course of the entire encounter. If the answer is no, then holding cooldowns really cannot hurt at all. If the answer is yes, then you move onto the question of, “What am I holding them for?” Answering this question is generally pretty easy. Intelligently holding cooldowns is how you make the most efficient use of them while using them at appropriate times. Is there a priority target you need to burn down, is the boss going to take increased damage, or is lust soon are some of the things you should ask when you are looking to hold them. The benefit given to the raid is also another critical discussion topic. If delaying your cooldowns does not benefit your damage by enough or assist your raid in completing the encounter, then it is not good enough to delay cooldowns. There are specific times and specific fights in which holding cooldowns benefits your raid so much, that it is worth. Determining these circumstances is essential!
Offensive Cooldown Usage for Balance Druid in Shadowlands
Moonkin has lot of minor cooldowns and 1 major cooldown coming into Dragonflight. This should not really come as a surprise as this is how Balance Druid has been for a bit now.
超凡之盟
/
化身:艾露恩之眷
- 3-mintue cooldown - Gain both eclipse effects increasing secondary stats by a little bit depending on what spell it is.
野性蘑菇
- 30s recharge 3 stacks - Gives you 5 Astral Power per target hit, up to 20 Astral Power. Really good AP Gen on AOE and the spell power that it scales off of is really good.
万灵之召
- 2-minute cooldown - You slam a flurry of druid spells into targets around you. This generates a lot of Astral Power and does a decent amount of damage.
艾露恩的战士
- 45-second cooldown - Empower your next 3 Lunar Strikes to give 40% more Astral Power and are instant cast. This is incredibly strong for multi-target situations while being situationally very good for heavy movement.
艾露恩之怒
- 1-minute cooldown - Call down a beam of Astral Energy doing Area of Effect damage in an 8-yard radius and giving 40 Astral Power over the 8-second duration. In a pure single target situation, you use Fury of Elune on cooldown and in conjunction with Celestial Alignment on the pull and every 3 minutes beyond that. The 40 Astral Power and the beam of Astral Energy are quite strong to be used in parts in which you need priority damage. If used on multi target, make sure you have the mobs stacked within 8 yards and that they will not jump out of range of the rest of the mobs. The Fury of Elune will do ~15% - 20% of your damage over the 8-second duration on Single Target.
自然之力
- 1-minute cooldown - Summon 3 Treants to fight for you for 10 seconds dealing melee damage and granting you 20 Astral Power instantly. In a single target scenario, use these Treants on cooldown. If you need them for a burst window, try to line it up so that you get the most efficient use out of this 1-minute cooldown.
Make sure you drop the trees close your selected target. Your treants will run away from the mob you drop this on if you aren't specifically targeting it.
This cooldown is pretty nifty as it gives you 20 Astral Power instantly and allows you to spend a large number of resources rapidly when used in conjunction with Fury of Elune. The tree melees will do ~15% of your damage over the 10-second duration on Single Target.

It says that I should dot at 30% of the duration. Isn't it better to dot just before it disappears? Maybe, I don't understand the sentence. Someone please explain me. Thank you!

Hey man, a quick request! Could you individually address the rotation abilities (star fall, solar wrath, starsurge, etc.) in here somewhere? As someone switching to balance for the first time, there's no section in here that goes through how each ability fits into your rotation similar to the sections you have for Defensive cooldowns or Utility Spells, so Im having trouble setting up my skillbar. I also noticed its kinda the same on the beginners page. Thank you!

i see this shadowlands rotation posted time and time again and its not correct. you open with double wrath, dot up then pop cds and starsurge x2 or x3. each star surge enhances your now longer duration eclipse. if you mess this up you could lose 20% on the eclipse buff or more

Hey, I'm going to be responding to a lot of the comments on this post to help people out with this very informative guide (thanks Tettles).
I was a top 50 balance druid in Nya, so my perspective is more raid based than M+.
Thank you!
As to "rotation abilities (star fall, solar wrath, starsurge, etc.)", these really aren't rotational abilities. Balance is, essentially, more about "balance" than rotation. Starfall has a 10 second duration and should be maintained with 100% uptime on 3+ targets, or 2+ if talented into Stellar Drift. There is no set "rotation" for this. Starsurge should be cast at the beginning of an eclipse because it increases your damage during the 15second eclipse window. So, ideally, on ST you pool up your astral power at the end of your Lunar Eclipse so that you enter Solar Eclipse with just under 100 AP and Starsurge 3x in succession (this will also get you 3 stacks of starlord if talented into it). You then spam Solar Wraths and refresh dots as needed. On Multi-Target, Lunar Eclipse becomes your "most important" eclipse and is the one you would pool your AP for.
It says that I should dot at 30% of the duration. Isn't it better to dot just before it disappears? Maybe, I don't understand the sentence. Someone please explain me. Thank you!
This is called a "Pandemic Window", and I suggest you look it up. The short version is, most dots can be refreshed under 30% duration without losing damage. So if a 10 second dot is refreshed with 3 seconds left, it would go up to 13 seconds. Those 3 seconds are not lost. This applies to Sunfire, Moonfire, Stellar Flare, and ALSO to Starfall. Never worry about refreshing RIGHT at 30%, as nothing is essentially gained from this. Just use the window to refresh your dot before it expires. This gives you leeway in your rotation.
i see this shadowlands rotation posted time and time again and its not correct. you open with double wrath, dot up then pop cds and starsurge x2 or x3. each star surge enhances your now longer duration eclipse. if you mess this up you could lose 20% on the eclipse buff or more
So Swordy... it depends. The reason to Solar Wrathx2, then Starsurge is because of the Nature's Balance target. The AP spent on Starsurge is not lost, since your AP is reset to 50% when the boss fight starts, so that AP generated from the two Solar Wraths would be wasted. My only warning to this method is if you are using Starlord. This would start the 15 second timer on Starlord and could screw you over by the time you enter your Cele Alignment, because you won't get the full benefit. Either make sure you purge Starlord with a macro before entering Celestial Alignment (because you'll be casting 3x Starsurge at the beginnning to get 12% haste for 15seconds) or don't open with a Starsurge. That Starsurge isn't worth messing up your Starlord window.
(TL;DR, if you aren't using Starlord or know how to purge Starlord, Tettles opening rotation is good. If you ARE using Starlord and do NOT know how to manage with purging, do NOT open with Starsurge and instead open with Solar Wrathx2, dots, Starfire to 90+AP)
ok so being very new to playing boomkin why do i moonfire while in a solar eclipse during aoe as stated above ...?
So, Solar Eclipse is our ST Eclipse as it buffs damage from Wrath. During Multi Target however, Solar Wrath isn't strong as it hits only one target. Lunar Eclipse is GREAT for damage, as our Starfire is going to blow mobs up with cleave. As such, we don't want to be spamming Moonfire during our Lunar Eclipse, as we would be missing out on fatty Starfires. Therefore, during Lunar Eclipse your priority is Maintain Starfall, Refresh Sunfire (if it is about to expire and mobs aren't about to die), fatty Starfires. Then when Lunar Eclipse ends you want to Starfirex2 to enter Solar Eclipse. Since Wrath is crap damage on MT, the best use of your GCDs is to DoT up your targets, refresh Starfall as needed, and depending on the number of mobs fill with Starfire or Wrath. If there are 5+ targets, I'm casting Starfire even if I'm in a Solar Eclipse, unless there is a target that NEEDS to die.

That's it. You have a slightly worse cat form as it requires 2 globals to shift back into Moonkin Form!
Soulshape does not remove you from the form you are in. It is a little strange that your Moonkin Form aura does not show while in soulshape, however as soon as you cast a spell, or soulshape ends, you are returned to the form you started soulshape from. So there are 0 globals to get back into Moonkin Form.
Do not make the mistake of casting Moonkin Form from Soulshape in order to e back to Moonkin Form, as that will actually be changing out of Moonkin Form (which is why most think you need 2 globals)

Just curious why Nature's Balance would cause you to want to Starsurge as your 3rd cast in the opener. Doesn't the Starlord buff fall off right after you launch your 3 Starsurges in that scenario?

NatPaggleIsaPOS
Starsurge should be cast at the beginning of an eclipse because it increases your damage during the 15second eclipse window
Really? I was doing the exact opposite. The tooltip is extremely poorly worded. it does not mention eclipse affecting starsurge damage at all. I believe you though.

The guide claims "As Balance Druids, we're fortunate enough to always have been one of the tanks with the largest array of defensive cooldowns." and also that our necrolord covenant ability is Abomination Limb.
I get it's pain to write 30+ spec guides uniquely but come on that's not even a druid spell

I was wondering if someone could help me out with the starting rotation.
Is casting 2 Wraths to enter eclipse prior to the encounter assuming the encounter is going to happen right away? For example, if my group holds up for a bit (possibly even up to 15 seconds) before pulling a boss, would I be better to not even bother with pre-casting the Wraths, and just apply my dots, get to 90 Astral Power, and then Celestial Alignment?
Additionally, what if it's my Solar Eclipse that's going to come up next (they seem to alternate, but I'm guessing there's a predictable pattern to better control this), should I pre-cast Starfire instead, since I'm going to be using Celestial Alignment shortly after anyways?
Thanks in advance! <3

As a heads up, the links to the various covenant information on the rotations page all lead to

. I'm fairly certain that's not where they're supposed to lead. Otherwise, Great guide!

Hi, quick question (maybe), I've had a read and can't seem to find this anywhere but it relates to what spell I should be using after I've popped Celestial Alignment. If it's ST am I still spamming Wrath or do I spam Starfire as this is a harder hitting spell but has more of a cast time to it?
Thanks for any help :)

I found this part of the guide really hard to understand and the disorganised headings are a part of that. I'm not sure why the "Rotation Selection Tool Instructions" header keeps popping up when most other classes only do it once (
Ret
and
Havoc DH
where it's all at the top are good examples of keeping it unobtrusive.) Many of the headers say the same thing or seem redundant, like how DoTs and eclipses appear in both the opener and other sections; Main rotation should really be labelled "Single target" (it may be the case for raid bosses, but the meaning of "main" changes depending on the content being done).
The other part of this was the lack of details: the information on finishers and especially starfall were kinda scattered and a bit all over the place given how important its uptime is, and felt like they weren't integrated with the BFA->SL changes listed on the main page of the guide; and there was a severe lack of information about Astral Power generators including shooting stars and the impact of having and using the right talents. It definitely felt like a BFA guide that was drafted and never quite updated fully. To anyone else trying to understand Balance gameplay, I would definitely recommend Tettles' voiceover in his
guide video
rather than try to read through this, and for
AP and ability pointers
I feel like Bora explained it a lot more clearly at Icy Veins.

Hey Guys, my question is:
Why I use 2 Wrath before combat? (Eclipse is overwritten by Celestial Alignment which we use after Dots right?) So I mean why we enter Eclipse, when it is overwritten right after Dots by Celestial Alignment.
Why we dont do Dots -> Celestial -> Starsurge -> Convoke.... for Balance Druid Nightfae ?
In M+ when I dont have a 10 sec Countdown, is it right to do directly Dots -> Celestial -> ... ?
Thank you!
Best regards,
Janni

I'm hoping to make Boomkin my main for Dragonflight, but still learning how it works. One thing that I don't see in this guide or any other I've found is when and how to cast NewMoon/HalfMoon/FullMoon. Do I just ignore that ability, or where does it fit into the rest?
