What is Corruption?
Corruption is a new system of power progression which replaces Titanforging; instead of item level bonuses, they will now have a chance to be Corrupted by the Old Gods, represented by the purple-colored stat which adds both a positive effect and stacking negative attribute which incurs penalties at various thresholds. Although the negative effects can reach a point at which they become debilitating, carefully managing the bonuses and penalties allows for a great deal of customization and individual power gain.
Corrupted gear can be freely cleansed by MOTHER in order to remove both effects and revert them back into normal items. Corruption can also be added on non-corrupted items, by purchasing
Preserved Contaminants with MOTHER
. Corruption resistance can also be gained over time, both from new minor essences, and the legendary cloak
, allowing more corrupted effects to be worn. For more information on all potential Corruptions, see our
Corruption Overview Guide
.
Buying Corruptions with Echoes of Ny'alotha for Assassination Rogue
What Corruptions should I buy from MOTHER for my Assassination Rogue?
Corruptions now can be
purchased from MOTHER
using
. Every few days, a new set of Corruptions will be accessible.
With that in mind, we present a list of the best corruptions you may want to consider to purchase from MOTHER for your Assassination Rogue.
High Corruption Tiers
These corruptions can come with fairly high amounts of corruption on them, which makes them good to achieve a bigger boost if you are starting out on a new character or if you run out of slots for more corruption once the legendary cloak resistance gets very high.
- Best Single Target Corruption on paper but has drawbacks when additional targets come in.
- If you want one that is strong in AoE/M+ situations, then this is the one to aim for.
- A strong (but swingy) hybrid corruption for Single Target damage when the fight also has some adds.
Lower Corruption Tier
Corruptions with a lower ceiling can have the advantage that they are good to complement high corruptions in your setup. Of course, you can try to use the listed higher corruptions at a lower tier, but these listed here increase your pool of choices. If you are not sure what to do, simulations are always a good idea.
- Possibly the best all-round corruption to stack for Assassination. It's not necessarily the best on paper for a specific situation (be it Single Target or AoE) but it works out well across all possible situations where other corruptions shift more.
- Even after the nerf, it is not a bad corruption. With its low 15 corruption, it can fit into almost any setup and should be fairly cheap to get, which makes it a decent filler corruption if you cannot fit more higher corruption items in.
Stop giving me options, just tell me what to buy!!!
Okay, alright. If you just want to stack something that is fine in any case, without obsessively min-maxing everything with many gearsets and Top Gear sims:
Stack
. You'll be fine.
Check out the details in the following sections if you want to know how these and other corruptions compare in general.
Best Assassination Rogue Corruption Bonuses
We have comparative simulations for each of the various Corruption affixes which can roll on gear, courtesy of SimulationCraft and Bloodmallet. While this overview should give you a good general idea of how each compare to one another, your specific character may see slightly different results based on how you are geared and what Corruptions are available to you; you can create your own comparisons as well as combinations of different essences you have unlocked on your character using
Raidbots
Top Gear function. If you are not already familiar with Raidbots and how to use it, take a look at our
How To Guide
. When looking at corruption effects it is important not to look at the overall power of a given effect, but at how much power per corruption is gained while staying below your safe threshold. By using Top Gear, you can play with the Max Corruption bar, allowing you to maximize your damage based on your Corruption risk choices.
This is simply an overview and doesn't take into account the negative effects of stacking Corruption. While increasing Corruption will continually increase player power, it comes at the cost of serious side effects, which may be debilitating in some activities or encounters. Reference the Corruption Effect notes and recommendations below to see how your spec can best take advantage of these bonuses and deal with the detriments.
Please also note that when using more than one of the same corruption, even different tiers of the same corruption, the effect/benefit (damage, statistical gains, etc) stack while durations and proc rates remain unchanged. The only exception is
, unique to the Ny'alotha raid weapon
, which will proc independently when dual wielded.

PLEASE NOTE: Corruptions can also have a noticeable impact on the value of (stat-related) Azerite Powers, Trinkets, and secondary stat items in general. This is why charts may vary from personal results and why it is always a good idea to use the Top Gear and Droptimizer features on Raidbots.
Best Effects
These are the strongest corruption bonuses that are good to look out for and prioritize when combining multiple bonuses.
- (Scales with Item Level.) This is a very good corruption against a single target but comes with a high amount of corruption. The best in a head to head versus other same tier corruptions on paper. However, keep in mind that this suffers a bit from multiple targets as its target is selected randomly and this can cause issues with stacking the debuff. For fights that have adds over a longer period of time, it can be a good idea to switch to more situation agnostic corruptions.
- This is a pretty strong damage proc but only for AoE and assuming you can direct the beam to hit as many targets as possible. It also comes with a hefty amount of corruption. In other words, it is for AoE what
is for Single Target.
- Possibly the best corruption across all situations. The two above have drawbacks whereas this always works and Haste is usually the best stat for Assassination.
- (Scales with Item Level.) This comes only in one low corruption tier, for which it is pretty good. Even after the nerf, the DPS per Corruption is good in any situation. While maybe not something in a head to head vs one other bonus with more corruption, this is great to combine it with other bonuses and fit into your selected corruption level.
Good Effects
For the Mid Tier, we look at bonuses that are alright and always helpful to use if you do not have the top options. Their benefit can vary depending on your gear and it is, as always, advisable to refine choices using personal simulations.
% secondary stat increases from all sources - By design, they have more benefit the more you have of the corresponding stat already (including procs in real-time), so your preference can and will shift with gear.
/
- These two flat stat procs are both good in any situation. They can have an influence on your stat weights, that you might want to keep in mind.
- Different from Haste and Mastery procs because it requires taking damage instead of using attacks for it to proc. It can be numerically on par with these other flat stat procs if you take regular unavoidable damage. In this case, you also have the defensive benefit from Versatility. However, in a general context, the other options may be the better choice.
- Different from the Haste and Mastery procs because it has a lower value with a stacking mechanic. After the duration hotfix so it shouldn't drop before stacking up, this is an alright corruption. However, the other stat procs still seem a little bit better.
- An overall very solid bonus in both single target and AoE situations. It comes at a lower ceiling on the maximum tier but is similarly efficient in terms of gain per corruption.
- After the hotfixes (in the week of February 11, 2020), this is a solid mid-tier corruption alongside the others. The additional gain from allies with it is rather small but still nice to have.
- (Scales with Item Level.) Comparable to the stat proc corruptions in terms of efficiency and DPS per point of corruption, depending on the item level. It has the advantage that it comes with a higher ceiling and can be targeted via the dagger listed further below. It also is a more situation-agnostic alternative to the top tier corruptions. For better or worse, it can be very swingy and hit extremely strong damage levels if you are lucky with procs. The proc rate of this corruption does NOT scale with Haste.
- Stacks on any damaging ability and has a flat chance to collapse. The damage is based on maximum health and split across all enemies. Once all stacks dealt their damage it can stack up again. After the nerf (week of February 11, 2020), this has left the top tier and now mostly ranks equal to or even below other mid-tier bonuses.
Bad Effects
Bonuses listed here are not very good and candidates for purification.
/
- While Avoidance and Leech are not useless per se, they only have defensive benefit. That raises the question of why one wants to pay the cost and add negative effects from corruption in the first place.
- An interesting idea but not really helpful because only few abilities have cooldowns and there isn't much room to play around.
- Another cooldown affecting bonus that appears quite underwhelming. The proc chance is very low and your expected cooldown reduction not high at all (about 5 seconds per minute). This might work in some boundary cases where the difference it makes allows you to get an important additional CD window, but generally, it compares rather weak.
Best Assassination Rogue Ny'alotha Weapons
Besides random corruption effects, weapons from the new Ny'alotha raid also have exclusive effects on them, which can be quite powerful. Similar to random corruption effects, if you obtain a weapon with a subpar effect, you can always cleanse it. As an Assassination Rogue, you can obtain a dagger with the following effect:
always comes with
- The weapon can be a reliable source to get a corruption effect but the dagger only has one of the effects that can also roll on any other corrupted item. This means that usual corruption combination possibilities apply and you can treat it just like a randomly corrupted item.
Dealing with Negative Effects of Corruption
In addition to the bonuses, corrupted items also increase the Corrupted stat by varying amounts based on the tier of the effect. Corruption stat incurs penalties that the player must deal with, and while these effects start out rather benign, they quickly ramp up in both potency and impact, to the point where it can be very hard to deal with during a Dungeon or Raid encounter, and even become outright debilitating at the highest levels.
There are five effects unlocked at different total corruption levels:
- Unlocked with 1 Corruption
- Unlocked with 20 Corruption
- Unlocked with 40 Corruption
- Unlocked with 60 Corruption
- Unlocked with 80 Corruption

At Rank 6, the legendary Cloak
gains an on-use effect which will remove and immune all currently active negative corruption effects.
-
and
should provide very helpful utility to negate this effect if you have important movement windows.
- A very good strategy is to position yourself in such a way that placing the zone does not force you out of melee range of your target. A "left foot/right foot" strategy of standing on one side of a boss and switching sides when the void zone drops will help mitigate the area of denial. Otherwise, this still doesn't hit too hard on its own, so if you have to stand in it, then that can usually be healed against by your healers or
. Just make sure you don't stack up too high. The legendary cloak dispel is a good idea if you have back-to-back procs and cannot move.
- The easiest way to deal with the Thing from Beyond is by using your legendary cloak dispel.
negates all the damage too. Furthermore, it also despawns when you use
. Unfortunately, Assassination Rogues usually use this as part of their damage rotation but I still want to note it in case you want to do the trade and dedicate it for the utility. The Thing can also be stunned, which is something you can keep in mind as well.
How Much Corruption Should an Assassination Rogue Take?
That is a very good question and not easy to answer generally. It depends a lot on how much of the negative effects you are comfortable with. You should always be sure that for your given content, be it a raid boss, a Mythic+ dungeon, or something else entirely, you can still perform to the best of your abilities without risking to die, sacrifice too much uptime, or making life too hard on your healers. With your ability to increase Corruption Resistance over time, as you upgrade the legendary cloak or equip essences with Corruption Resistance, thresholds of how much Corruption you can take and the number of combinations you can consider increases.
For this reason, it should be a good idea to
find an effective corruption maximum for yourself
. Effective means that you take your Corruption from corrupted gear and subtract your Corruption Resistance. The breakpoints where you get an additional negative effect will play into this. Then, you set up your gear for the best benefit of corruption bonuses that stays below that maximum. Top Gear simulations will help you determine that.
If you are not sure what cap to start with, you can try to always stay below 40 Corruption, so you only have two negative effects at most. Raise or reduce that cap as you (and by extension your group) are comfortable with.

Thank you for this! Will this be updated for the 1.24.2020 hotfix to most of the top tier?

May I ask what are you referring to with this
Special note: Detection stacks this up too, so you can spam this ability whenever you are pooling energy
