This is a post about the recent shootings and acts of violence at Ft. Hood, perpetrated by Maj. Hasan. Major Hasan is confirmed to be a follower of the faith of Islam, (that is, he is a Muslim).
I hope that this will be a mature intelligent and informative part of the forums. I WILL ASK THAT THERE BE NO FLAMING, STEREOTYPING, AND THAT ALL RELIGIONS TALKED ABOUT HERE ARE RESPECTED. KEEP THIS CIVIL, KEEP IT MATURE. IF YOU CANNOT HANDLE TOPICS SUCH AS THIS, GO DO SOMETHING ELSE. THANKS.
Maj. Hasan was a believer in the religion of islam. I despise the fact that many people here, and politically, on the right most of the time too, have said that this was an act of "jihad" or "terrorism." Personally I'm an Atheist, but I CANNOT stand what what some, (or most) people think of when they hear Islam or Muslim, (that is, that it is by default associated with violence, terrorism or "jihad".) or perhaps sterotipically think that a Muslim is a bearded man of Arabic descent, who wears the stereotypical clothing. This is unfortunately perpetuated by media and mainstream culture. I am not a Muslim, but I can tell you with almost complete cetrainty that most muslims who abide by the general teachings of the religion, (of which I have a little bit of knowledge) are responisble, productive members of society, who hold normal jobs, have normal families and aren't fundamentally any different than most citizens of the U.S., or people who are just trying to get through the struggles of their daily lives.
With that said, I'd like to state that Personally I don't think his religious convictions had anything to do with the crimes he commited. I am basically writing this thread to state that Islam is NOT a religion of violence and intolorance. There are great differences between islam and other major world religions but there are similarities as well, one being that a person should treat others kindly and respectfully, I.E, treat others the way you want to be treated. Saying Maj. Hasan killed 13 people (and condolonces to their families), because he was a muslim terrorist is like saying Timothy McVeigh (who was Catholic and later an Agnostic or Scientologist) Commited the 1995 bombings because he was Christian. McVeigh and later the terrorists who planned and carried out the 9/11 attacks were believers in their respective religions but they were on the FRINGES. They were EXTREMISTS. They took the teaching of their Faiths, and either twisted or interpreted them in a Radical way.
In closing I'd like to say that both Christianity and Islam are peaceful religions and people of those religions who do certain things should NOT be taken as direct representatives of others. The vast majorities of Christians and Muslims are peaceful, hard working people, and we as a society in general need to dispell the myth, Particularly with Islam about how its' followers are this way or that.
Your thoughts? (Remember the expectations stated above please, debated about religion can often be bitterly divisive and heated.)

Here's how it works for most people-
For us:
Anything good that we do is intentional.
Anything we do wrong is merely a mistake.
For them:
Anything that they do wrong is intentional.
Anything that they do right is merely a mistake.
You aren't going to get past most people's preconceptions that they have. Once people put Muslims into the "them" category, they're going to look at them as terrorists, regardless of how you convince them.

People need to understand the difference between cause and circumstance.

You are preaching open mindedness, and not being stereotypical, but in the same breath lumping 'us' and 'them' into a category and making judgments about our perceptions, which you can't know.

I don't think all Muslims are terrorists. I don't think all Christians are lovable soccor moms and nice guy hard working dads. However, I don't excuse anyone's actions if they attribute their actions to a religion. What a person does, they should bear the blame for and consequences for. That being said, it would also be foolish to not notice the disturbing trend of radicals coming out of islamic backgrounds.

Couldnt have said it any better.
Where was the media when all those White Christian soldiers went ape%^&* and shot their comrades? But as soon as a person of Muslim faith does the same thing its "RAWR TERRORISM".

No one said he wasn't. Stop your damn qq.
What's being said is that not all Muslims are terrorists, which you understand, so I don't get the purpose of your post.
