I'm pretty noob with tanking but this is the point:
I've talked yesterday with a 5.790 gearscore paladin who told me that buffing stamina is strongly better than investing in parry dodge and block.
Is he true?

I'm fairly certain that he is true seeing as you did speak to him.
Unless this was all a segment of a dream, in which case probability states he is not true.

Thanks for your answer, BTW I'm sorry for my english...

Yes for the most part you will find yourself wanting more stamina. I am not a fan of pure stamina stacking, but it is worth loosing some socket bonuses for pure stamina gems.

Yes being at or above the defense min is always number one. But once you get all the emblem gear you will be at or above that point passively I believe... I am personally way past that point so I don't think about it anymore, but just starting out it is something to keep in mind.

yes... I already capped the defense, now I have 355...
So I have to get stamina and stamina and stamina...

maybe you could clarify a bit, you have 355 what exactly? defense cap is 540 for raids at level 80, and 535 for heroics..

warcanon
maybe a typo :P
stamina with iLvl 232+ is the way to go :)
I guess there is a few topics on the forum about this allready if the search function is used, not sure though...

If you're going to do it, do it right.

You're right Warcanon, it probably was a typo since your base defense at leve 80 is 400.
There's no cap on Defense.
*sigh* Alright.. let's get technical.
To be uncrittable in heroics, you need 535 defense, to be uncrittable in raids you need 540 defense... and you
know
that's what i meant.

But the OP and other random readers might not... which is why we keep harping on it here.

Fair point, however you don't -need- to raise your defense over 540, which is why it's called the defense cap. In that sense, it's like the expertise cap. Ideally, you need 26 expertise to push block off of the table, but expertise above 26 is still helpful because it lowers your chance to be parried. Yes, it helps your mitigation some, but there's no real need to go above 540.
*man* i can't wait till cataclysm when defense rating will be nonexistant..

Ardent Defender.
Yes, you don't *need* it. But it's "nice to have".

are you really implying that not having defense over the uncrittable point is similar to not taking ardent defender?

Jargon
is terminology which is especially defined in relationship to a specific activity, profession, or group. The term most often covers the language used by people who work in a particular area or who have a common interest. Much like slang, it can develop as a kind of short-hand, to express ideas that are frequently discussed between members of a group, though it can also be developed deliberately using chosen terms. A standard term may be given a more precise or unique usage among practitioners of a field. In many cases this causes a barrier to communication with those not familiar with the language of the field. As an example, the
defense cap
is a jargon term related to
tanking
, and refers to the ammount of defense skill you need to achieve 100%
immunity to critical hits
.
When someone says defense cap, he says 540. It is wrong to confuse people with statements like "there is no cap to defense", because when they refer to the "defense cap" as to the ammount of 540 defense (in the current expansion), they are correct. A more helpful approach would be describing that extra defense over the cap is not bad, and it might even be the best stat to put into a yellow socket, provided the socket bonus is worth going for. IMO defense is the only avoidance related stat that is worth putting into a socket. It also gives little extra bonuses to Paladins -> more hp gained from an Ardent Defender proc, and to Death Knights -> more damage reduction on IBF.
By the way, i am obviously not talking about +20 defense rating gems. Good tanks do not use gems that dont have at least +15 stamina.
For the most recent raid content, Effective Health and Threat/DPS seem to be the best things tanks can go for. Avoidance comes from gear inevitably, and does not require extra attention. The best stats for EH stacking tanks are Stamina and Armor, plus Agility to a lesser extent. So, to answer the OP's question, the paladin was right. Stamina stacking all the way.
