So, who are the GMs? Are they just regular people looking for a job and get one at a Blizzard call center? What experience is needed? Video game experience? Call experience? If a person had never played a video game in their life, what are the chances the Blizzard would hire them in their call center?
This is not a "GMs are stupid" thread. I'm curious really. Plus, even if you take a person that doesn't play video games, I believe with excellent training, that they could excel at their job.

From what I know... which may be incorrect
Normal GMs are the ones replying to your tickets, they do it via an external program thats somehow connected to your ticket qq system.
The GMs that you see in game are the 'higher rank' GMs and I have no clue what they do.
And if GMs want to play the game itself, they have to buy the game + expacs and also pay for sub

It's hard to imagine Blizzard hiring a GM who didn't play the game. Not because such a person couldn't possibly handle the job, I just can't imagine they're short of applicants...
They do require the GM's to be in particular locations and as such, the 12 million+ players gets severly limited. Of those that remain, having to deal with a stampede of whiny players who all demand special treatment "now!" isn't exactly an endearing concept.

I think you are better of inquiring through Blizzards official channels. Here's an answer from their FAQ:

How much does education play a role in getting a job as a GM vs. previous customer service skills and a drive to do the job?
Customer service skills are a plus, but we have some fantastic GMs who have never done a classic CS job previously and just have a good head on their shoulders, a great deal of common sense and the desire to learn. We also look into the playing experience of each applicant. We want GMs who not only love the game, but who are also well versed in its content. High-end playing experience is preferred, but we also look at applications with experience in higher mid-range content.

Blizzard puts quite some effort in the skills of their Custom Support. But alas, golden helpdesk is still helpdesk. And you get the worst customers EVER.

I've worked in customer service for about nine years now, if I lived out there I would more than likely apply for a job. Yea, CS isn't the greatest career in the world but somebody has to do it, and for the time being I actually find it somewhat enjoyable. Maybe I'm just insane :P

^ This.
I have a friend in San Francisco that pays something like $1500 a month for a non-slum studio apartment.
$15 an hour is barely above the poverty line out there.

What part of PA, if you don't mind me asking?
I'm from Philly but I'm stationed in San Diego. It's expensive out here.. but not as bad as what people are claiming. It's approximately 1,000 to 1.2k for a 2 bedroom apartment here.
