I don't know how many quests this guy is associated with, but I've seen him go through a LOT of stuff from all the times I've run by the Rebel camp or from Duskwood to STV.

First, I know that he is a turn-in for some quest that originates in Booty Bay where you get supplies to the camp. That's normal.

Second, I've seen him go "off on patrol" and he says he'll be right back, only to be killed by two of Kurzen's men.

Third, I've seen him just outright SNAP in the camp, his name turning yellow, and begin to attack the other NPCs in the camp. He normally dies from this.

And Fourth (the strangest) I've seen him wander across the bridge into Duskwood and seemingly CONVERSE with Plague Eaters (who are yellow-named passive instead of aggro) while he is yellow-named as well.

I know that these actions have all got to be associated with various quests, but I have no idea what they are, personally. Can anyone shed some light?

Saw him today near duskwood. Thought it was some quest so i started helping him kill the ghouls.. Didnt notice his name was yellow so i killed him with my aoe.. dropped a few copper.. weird.

Private Merle is the spy for the quest chain beginning with Jungle Secrets.

To get this quest hang out at the Rebel camp in STV and keep an eye on Private Thorsen. When he says "Time for my patrol. I'll be back shortly" follow him down the path.

When he runs off the road he will be attacked by 2 of Kurzen's men. Just kill them and he will offer you a quest.

Does this guy give a quest, like Thorsen?
I remember watching him leave the Rebel Camp and cross the bridge into Duskwood, once. He then gets attacked by ghouls, but I didn't help him in time and he died.

I also followed him but killed the ghouls. He took off running for 20 meters, stopped and vanished. Next time I re-do this quest with an alt, I'll try killing him first. In the meantime, this remains a mystery. :(

An interesting fact, when you discover that he is the spy and he run away from the camp, if you follow him you will see how he will get killed by some ghouls in the entrance to duskwood in some kind of special event, i thought that was a really neat detail of blizzard back then :)

I klled Private Merle instead of the Plague Spreaders that appear... well he is a spy! Hoping he may drop something good, or possibly a quest item to hand in for goodies... he dropped nothing. Sorry Private Merle for your senseless death, but at least the Undead didn't do it! :(
