Value at auction is determined by supply and demand.

The amount an NPC pays for it is determined by the value the programmer typed in for the sell amount for one of thousands of items.

The ONLY thing that matters about the Vendor sell price is as a STARTING point for setting AH prices. If you can't sell it at AH for more than a vendor pays, then why bother?
