Sapphiron - WoW Classic Naxxramas Strategy Guide

is the first boss in the Frostwyrm Lair and second-to-last boss of

. Sapphiron is infamous for being one of the most difficult bosses, based purely on preparation. Raids will need plenty of Frost Resistance gear and Greater Frost Protection Potions, as well as a detailed layout of where the raid needs to be situated in Sapphiron's room. Only when a raid has prepared enough for this encounter will they be able to take the boss down!
This guide provides tips and strategies for defeating the Sapphiron encounter in Naxxramas in WoW Classic.
Sapphiron Abilities and Strategy
Sapphiron has different abilities while on the ground and while in the air. These are essentially two different phases, where the raid needs to adapt based on Sapphiron's positioning. While on the ground, the raid should be spread out to minimize damage from Blizzard, as well as from the transition into air, when Sapphiron casts Icebolt.
Once the boss is in the air, the raid should pop Greater Frost Protection Potions, so players hit with Icebolt don't immediately die. Raiders will then need to stand behind the players hit with Icebolt, as they will be frozen inside of an ice cube.
Before Pulling Sapphiron
The first priority to this encounter is coming prepared with Frost Resistance Gear, which can be acquired inside the Naxxramas instance and from Professions, and some pieces can be picked up from older content. Even the Alterac Valley gear can come in handy during progression on Sapphiron, especially the trinkets

in Winterspring either.
Another great tip for raids is to prepare with a breakdown of locations where the raid needs to stand during the ground and air phases, with positioning similar to C'thun's where the raid is spread out across the room in sections.
Lastly, the entire raid needs to pre-pop

s and then wait for the potion cooldown to come up before pulling. Frost Protection Potions will reduce the raid damage from Frost Aura by a significant margin, taking some burden off of the Healers.
Sapphiron Ground Abilities
is a typical Dragon ability, which can be mitigated by having the Main Tank keep Sapphiron facing away from the Melee group.

is the second typical Dragon ability, requiring the raid not to stand directly behind her, where they will get flung out and take significant damage.

ticks every two seconds, dealing 599 Frost damage that can be partially resisted with enough Frost Resistance. Greater Frost Protection can also absorb this damage, so your entire raid should have one popped before the fight begins!

places a curse on players, draining their life and healing Sapphiron. This is why Mages and Druids are so important for this fight. If these curses aren't removed, so much self-healing can quickly make Sapphiron unkillable.
will spawn a roaming

, which is significantly stronger than any other blizzards in the game, dealing about 2000 Frost damage per second to anyone standing inside. The entire raid is responsible for avoiding this damage!

happens at the 15 minute mark and increases the damage of

to about 3,600 per tick, almost instantly wiping the raid.
Sapphiron Air Abilities
is a cast ability when Sapphiron is in the air, which will shoot a player with a bolt of ice, dealing 2624 Frost damage and stunning them, placing the player inside of an ice cube. The impact will also deal Frost damage to those nearby, so players need to move away from the target of Icebolt. When Sapphiron flies into the air, she will cast 5 Icebolts on players before casting her next ability.

is a cast ability that drops a ball of frost energy down from Sapphiron. When it hits the ground, it deals 74,999 frost damage (one-shotting everybody), and it can only be avoided by standing behind the ice cubes from Icebolt. Frost Breath will not hurt the players frozen in the ice cubes and will break them out.
Sapphiron Quick Tips
Tanks
The Main Tank needs to ensure Sapphiron is facing away from the raid, just as you would on any other dragon boss in WoW Classic. In addition, Melee groups and casters need to ensure they aren't standing behind Sapphiron's tail, where they would get tail swept.
Melee DPS
Melee need to focus on maximizing uptime on the boss while Sapphiron is on the ground, as well as ensuring they stay below the Main Tank on threat. When Sapphiron rises to the air, melee can move out from under the boss and look for an ice cube to stand behind. While the boss is in the Air and they are waiting behind the ice cube, Melee can also take some of the load off their Healers by using a refresh on

and immediately bandaging to full health.
Ranged DPS
When Sapphiron is on the ground, Ranged will need to be spread out throughout the room to minimize damage from Blizzard, staying spread out for the transition into air phase, where Icebolt deals AoE damage around the targeted player.
Ranged damage dealers need to pay close attention for roaming Blizzards and ensure they never get hit by them, as they do significant damage every second a player is inside. When Sapphiron rises in the air, Ranged can "cheat" by stepping next to the ice cube and continue to cast or put up damage-over-time abilities. If you choose to do this, make sure you move behind the ice cube before the Frost Breath goes out!
Mages should absolutely be spamming

pretty much this entire encounter. It can help if the raid assigns certain groups for Mages to decurse, with the Mages spread out around the room near their assigned groups.
Healers
Healers will likely be very stressed during this boss encounter, as it is one of the most difficult bosses for them because of how much raid damage goes out from Frost Aura. There should absolutely be healing assignments breaking down which Healers are responsible for which groups and which Healers are assigned to Main Tank. In addition, the Healers need to be spread throughout the room in the right places, as they won't be able to reach everyone during this encounter.
Druids should absolutely be spamming

pretty much this entire encounter. It can help if the raid assigns certain groups for Druids to decurse, with the Druids spread out around the room near their assigned groups.
Sapphiron Notable Classes

s are 100% the most important classes for this boss encounter, thanks to their unique Frost Resistance buffs from

. Nearly every player in the raid will need plenty of Frost Resistance from their gear, and combining this with these powerful spells, raids should be able to withstand the damage from Sapphiron's Frost Aura.

s are absolutely a necessity for this fight, as they are the only two classes capable of removing curses from players, using

. This will be the Mages' and Druids' top priority during this boss encounter, as Sapphiron puts a devastating Life Drain curse on players in the raid.

I want to point out that this guide refers to Sapphiron as "her", but anyone who has played Warcraft III will recall that Sapphiron is clearly a male dragon.

e1: i realized i just critized the guide negatively and wanted to add that it did help me with some refreshing informations on the fight, even after multiple kills with my guild it helped me to improve on some points/aspects
