The Temple of Ahn'Qiraj: AQ40 Overview in WoW Classic
Ouro Abilities and Strategy
Ouro is a two-phase boss encounter, where during Phase 1, Ouro will fight the raid from both above ground and underground, while using different abilities depending on which side of the ground Ouro is on. When emerging from underground, multiple abilities take place simultaneously, where Ouro will deal damage to the area around where he emerges and summons a pack of Ouro Scarabs inside the room. The raid will be tested on how they react to these transitions, before going into Phase 2, where Ouro has access to all abilities and enrages, increasing his auto-attack speed significantly.
Above Ground Abilities

is Ouro's primary ability when above ground. Sweep is a cleave auto-attack that will knock back anyone hit by it. Warrior and Druid tanks should immediately Intercept/Feral Charge back into the fight, to stay on the boss and maintain the aggro they had previously.

is the most dangerous ability in Ouro's spellbook, as it deals a massive amount of damage in a wide 180-degree cone in the direction Ouro is facing and stuns all those hit for 5 seconds. Sand Blast will always target the player highest on the threat table, meaning the off-tank should be prepared to take over tanking responsibility when the Main Tank is hit. On top of dealing significant damage, it also completely wipes the threat table for all targets hit, meaning a new tank will have to take over after the previous tank loses all aggro. It is important that only 1 tank is hit with a Sand Blast each time it goes out; otherwise, the fight can fall apart quickly if the entire raid gets blasted and stunned.
Submerge Abilities

deals significant damage on the ground in various locations throughout the room. This area is indicated by shaking rocks above ground and everyone in the raid needs to move away from this to avoid taking damage. Taking too much damage inside a Quake will lead to certain death!

hits the area Ouro emerges from, dealing damage to anyone standing in the area and knocking them back. During the Submerge phase, the entire raid should look to spread out, in an effort to have as few people hit by the Ground Rupture as possible.

in a random area in Ouro's room. If a tank is nearby, they can AoE Taunt the Scarabs to keep them under control, preventing them from hitting healers or cloth-wearers. If there are any AoE damage dealers nearby, they can contribute by killing these Scarabs, as well. And anyone in the raid can also use Goblin Sapper Charge to bring them down.
Phase 2 Abilities

and Phase 2 begins when Ouro reaches 20% health. Ouro will gain a massive attack speed bonus and auto-attack damage bonus, while also gaining access to all submerge abilities. Scarabs will begin spawning in the room, and Quakes will begin to rotate around the room, forcing the raid to move around and avoid standing in a Quake. All damage dealers should look to save their damage related cooldowns for Phase 2, to attempt to burn the boss down as quickly as possible.
Before the Pull
The raid should be positioned behind the tanks when running in, waiting for the tank to aggro the boss and turn Ouro around completely, facing away from the raid, before anyone begins doing damage to the boss. It is imperative that the boss is always faced away from the raid, to avoid anyone other than a single tank from getting hit by Sand Blast.

Ouro Notable Classes

tanks have a crucial role in this fight, ensuring they are tanking the boss in a direction away from the raid, to avoid hitting the entire raid with Sand Blast, a powerful ability Ouro uses when he is above ground. On top of that, whenever Ouro uses Sweep, Warriors need to Intercept back into the fight, as the Sweep effect will knock the tanks back. Tanks also need to be careful to only have the primary tank get hit with Sand Blast, as another tank will have to tank over threat, because Sand Blast will wipe all threat on the previous tank.

s can also serve an important role in this fight, as they can spam AoE abilities and Frost Nova on any Scarabs that are summoned when Ouro emerges from underground.
DPS Tips
Any damage dealer with AoE abilities should look to immediately burn down any Ouro Scarabs that spawn when Ouro emerges from underground. Anyone nearby when the Scarabs spawn can also pop

, just be careful not to aggro them all and get yourself killed. If enough players use Goblin Sapper Charges, the Scarabs should be burned down quickly enough to avoid any casualties.

This area is indicated by shaking rocks above ground and everyone in the raid needs to move away from this to avoid taking damage.
Tanks Tips
Ensure the main tank is keeping Ouro faced away from the raid, to prevent hitting everyone with a Sand Blast. On top of that, the Warrior tank should be positioned close to the boss in the event of a Sweep, the tank can Intercept back into the fight and stay on Ouro. It is important to note that when Sand Blast goes out, it wipes all threat on the main tank, and a new tank will need to pick up Ouro and continue to face Ouro away from the raid.
Once Ouro emerges from underground, a pack of Ouro Scarabs will spawn and immediately start attacking anyone nearby. Tanks should use an AOE Taunt to pick these mobs up, protecting any healers or cloth-wearers nearby. Mages should then come in and start AOE damaging the Scarabs down.
Healers Tips
While healing when Ouro is above ground, healers need to ensure they are completely behind the boss, as Ouro's Sand Blast will deal a massive amount of damage to anyone it hits. Sand Blast deals damage in a 180-degree cone in the direction Ouro is facing, so you have to be positioned completely behind the boss.
Healers need to pay close attention to their surroundings, in the event a Quake is happening, at which point they should immediately move away from the Quake to avoid taking damage. IIRC from vanilla the Scarabs fixate, they can't be tanked. And they despawn after 45 seconds. You can repeatedly frost nova them until they disappear.
Sand Blast seems to target the highest threat player, period, looking at videos of the newly released AQ.

Ouro is an easy encounter, just requiring discipline from melee dps to trivialise it.
Two things to know:
He always targets characters in melee range, only switching to range if there is no-one he can reach.
Sweep always (except for the first) goes off before Sand Blast.
So strategy:
When he sweeps,
EVERYONE
moves out, including the MT.
OT now runs (intercept, feral charge) in to tank.
OT alone stays in melee range and turns Ouro so that Sand Blast faces away from the raid.
Once Sand Blast has been cast (only hitting the OT), MT and the rest of melee move back in and continue as normal (MT never drops threat).
If your dps is high enough (and lets be honest, in classic it damn well should be) you kill him before he submerges.
