Large Undocumented Change for Warlocks on 9.1 PTR - Pets Benefit From Bonus Damage Effects

In the latest 9.1 PTR, a large undocumented change was added for Warlocks that will increase their DPS - pets now benefit from bonus damage effects!

Undocumented Damage Increase
The most recent build of PTR brought with it a few documented changes to Warlocks but there was also a large undocumented one that has not been discussed much. The same undocumented change was also present for a few builds in 9.0.5 PTR but was then removed with no acknowledgement from Blizzard.
Previously, effects like

acted as a bonus to the Warlock's damage only. They would increase your DoT damage,

damage and even Damage based trinkets or procs as those effects were tied to you, the player. They however would NOT increase the damage of your main pets (Imp, Felhunter and such) or your main cooldown (

) whatsoever. While this has never been a large issue it did sort of leave players wondering at times what is considered "your" damage as trinket based effects and such scale, but pets and guardians do not.
In a late 9.0.5 PTR build, we suddenly noticed that SOME pet damage was now scaling with these effects as well as

for Demonology. Your main pet (Imp, Felhunter and such) would now deal 10% increased damage if

was applied to your target, but Infernal damage remained unaffected. The same could be said for Affliction with both

which led to your main pet dealing roughly 20-23% more damage with both effects active on a target, but once again Darkglare remained unaffected by the change. Arguably the biggest power gain was to Demonology with

now affecting your Demonic Tyrant's Demonfire Damage which makes up anywhere from 20-30% of Demonology's average damage breakdown. Then in a later build all of this scaling vanished into thin air without a word. By that point in time the change was pretty well known but never acknowledged by Blizzard. This removal left a lot of players wondering if it was merely a bug or a system that was just not finished.
However, in the most recent version of 9.1 PTR this undocumented change has returned in an improved form!

are all once again increasing pet damage like previously but they are now ALSO increasing the damage of our main cooldowns! That means that our Infernal, Darkglare and Demonic Tyrant (as well as your main pet) are all benefiting from the bonus damage effect! Previously, it was mostly just a flat damage increase as your Imp or Felhunter did not really have any scaling traits tied to them but now that its affecting your main cooldown well...this changes things and very well might spawn a few new builds!
Overall this undocumented change appears to be roughly:
A 1%-1.5% DPS increase for Affliction
A 1%-2% DPS increase for Destruction
A 3%-5% DPS increase for Demonology in single target playing the

How This Changes Affliction
Affliction is hands down the Warlock spec that has undergone the most changes so far on PTR.

is now a baseline ability which is learned at level 58. The fact that your Darkglare is now affected by the bonus damage of

sounds great, but there is more to it. With

becoming a talent once again it means that you have to make the choice between

as they now share the same talent row in 9.1. You no longer have the option of playing

being a baseline ability so technically they 20-23% bonus scaling that Affliction WOULD have access to in 9.0.5 if this change made it live is now either 9% or 10%. Sadly

is also a very underwhelming cooldown when it comes to its own raw damage. While it will cast Eye Beam on your main target, the damage Eye Beam does is miniscule. It amounts to roughly 3% or so of your total damage in a single target encounter. While having a 2 minute cooldown on

and the new damage scaling it now has will make it more impactful, we aren't going to see it jump to being 10% of our damage breakdown.
Outside of the Eye Beam damage increase to your Darkglare you will also have a 9-10% damage increase to your main pet of choice. The damage breakdown below is from a recent single target PTR test with the newest version of Affliction. You will notice that our imp did 80.6k damage and accounted for 6.9% of our damage breakdown. Eye Beam checks in at roughly 49k damage and 4.5% which is certainly an increase from where it is in 9.0.5 both due to the Dark Caller change as well as

modifiers. Accounting for

having close to a 100% uptime, our imp dealt an extra 8,060 damage and our Darkglare had an extra 4,910 damage from Eye Beam. Running some quick Florida math, the

damage change was roughly a 1.1% Damage/DPS increase total in pure single target.
A 1% damage buff might not seem like a very large amount but taking into consideration the loss of

baseline and the damage loss that in itself brings (compared to

taking its place) it is a welcome change.
How This Changes Destruction
Unlike Affliction, Destro's main cooldown (

) actually does damage! Destruction does still suffer from having its

be a 3 minute cooldown with

being 2 minutes, but you can technically reduce the cooldown of your Infernal to about 2 minutes with the help of

now increase the damage your Infernal does when active (both Immolation aura and its melee damage) it certainly adds a bit of value to the 2 minute build. The fact that you can pair your

brings with is an exceptionally strong damage profile every 2 minutes.
When looking a bit beyond legendaries there is another important key to this build and that is the

Conduit for Destruction. This Conduit increases the damage of your Infernal's Immolation Aura by a certain % whenever it melees the target and the effect stacks 15 times! If you were to say...pair that conduit with the

talent on the 45 row and well...things can get pretty crazy. You have the chance to proc multiple Infernals that all have their own individual damage increase from

which is further amplified by the

damage effect now. There is an extreme amount of potential with this build and that is not even taking into consideration the damage increase your main pet gets from

either. It is also important to keep in mind that while in a Havoc window you can apply

You can see that the melee damage for both is very close, but the difference mainly lies in the Immolation Aura damage. The extra shards that you receive during your

uptime can vary a bit in single target encounters but anywhere from a 60-75% uptime is certainly obtainable. Taking a 70% uptime on

into account for the single target damage breakdown, it amounts to 2,900 extra melee damage, 5,100 Imp damage and about 7,000 extra Immolation Aura damage for a total of just over 15,000 damage. That amounts to roughly a 1.5% damage/DPS increase from both imp and infernal damage. It is also important to keep in mind that there is a good bit or RNG when playing

. With this affecting both pet damage as well as EVERY Infernal's Immolation Aura/melee attacks,

How This Changes Demonology
Demonology's place in all of this is a peculiar one. Unlike Destruction and Affliction, Demonology does NOT have a "flat" damage increase talent like

It has also pigeonholed us into running the same single target build all of Shadowlands due to how much it scales with extra pets out like

. While I don't expect the single target build to make the swap to

, the Mythic +/AOE version of Demonology is VERY interested in doing so. Combining

The main issue with this build previously however was that it's lacking in the single target damage department. You have a very strong, sustained AOE damage profile but when it came to Prideful mobs or Tyrannical weeks the build just felt subpar. This all changes though now that

damage! Even maintaining the FTS buff for 50% of your Demonic Tyrants duration (which depends on cast sequencing and

procs) is a large increase to your single target output. That coupled with the fact that Demonology can have its

and well...yeah. While the single target build of Demonology and the Dreadlash/FTS builds both see play in Mythic +, I would not be surprised at all to see a shift towards the Dreadlash/FTS build with this change being a thing.
Vilefiend and Grimoire: Felguard Demonology Breakdown
It is challenging to calculate the actual damage or DPS gain from

now affecting your Tyrant. There is a bit of RNG involved with

and stamina scaling effects but having a 20% damage increase to your Tyrant's Demonfire casts that is active anywhere from 40%-100% of its duration is extremely powerful. Remember that

From the Shadows Damage Breakdown
This breakdown shows the full value of Demonfire while playing the

damage is very similar to that of the Vilefiend + Grimoire build above but instead of Vilefiend and Grimoire, this build deals more

during out Tyrants due to

reprocs and Dreadstalker casts. Factoring all of that into the equation you can say that the

effect increased our Tyrant's damage by about 16% which amounts to roughly 44,000 extra

damage, or a 4.3% buff to this builds single target damage compared to 9.0.5. Keep in mind that

damage as well which was NOT factored into the equation. This build of Demonology is build around sustained AOE but with the changes to

it is also now a pretty strong single target option.
Regardless of what happens with the builds mentioned above I find it very odd that this change is back once again on PTR and has once again, not been mentioned by Blizzard. It does seem to be a "fixed" version of the 9.0.5 iteration and with that being the case I do feel it has a pretty good chance of sticking around heading into 9.1. I do feel like Demonology got the best deal with

Destruction build I also feel has a lot of potential looking at how the upcoming raid tier is structured. Oh and I suppose Affliction is happy with is 9-10% Darkglare/Imp damage buff as well. With all three Warlock specs looking solid so far throughout 9.1 and Sanctum of Domination testing I am excited to see what the next few PTR builds bring.
